Abstract:The lightweight steel structure is a new kind of steel structures. It has been developed most rapidly and applied widely in industrial, residential and public buildings with much its advantages, such as fast and easy construction, attractive appearance, light weight, low constructive price, etc. This paper presents the review and summary of the development situation of the lightweight steel structures in China and other countries. Some comments on the design, application of lightweight steel structures are put forward in the paper.

Abstract:There are a lot of advantages of light-weight steel residential constructions compared with the traditional ones, such as the high strength. light weight, good seismic performance, fast fabrication and small component sections. As well in the technical and economic aspects, the superiority of this type of construction system has been observed which is more satisfy the requirements of the "green" and creational dwelling systems. In the construction phase, the design can be standardized; the production of the components can be in large scale set: the construction can be easily mechanized; the supply of the products can be socialized; and the consumption can be in series. It is the tendency of the development of the architecture technology to popularize and develop the light weight steel construction, especially in dwelling systems. Based on several projects and researches of the light weight steel dwelling constructions in Hebei, the advantages and the disadvantages of this type of dwelling systems have been investigated. Also, in this paper, the trend of the development of the light weight steel dwelling constructions have been discussed

Abstract:This paper elaborates the development of spatial structure in our country.Because the forms and types are colorful and incessantly innovating,it is necessary to divide spatial structure by component elements.After the 21th century,the development of our nation’s spatial structure comes into a new period that the application range and fields for spatial structure extend continuously.Besides the large-span public buildings such as gymnasiums and airports,there are extensive and innovative applications including large-scale railway stations,stations awning without column,bridges and high-rise buildings for spatial structure.About the international cooperation,it is suggested to have an open mind and optimistic view towards the fact that that architecture scheme for our nation’s spatial structures are frequently led by foreign companies.China is already a country with a great deal of the top of the world spatial structures,thus it is our responsibility to strive to create even better and advanced spatial structures.Some issues which we should pay more attention are pointed out.

Abstract:The last decades have seen major advances in the research, design and construction of steel space structures (space grid structures) in China. This paper provides a review of these developments, with particular attention to the new technologies and new structural forms employed in China. The following topics on new technologies and new structures are given emphasis: long-span and large-area grid structures; composite space trusses; composite reticulated shells; triple-layer space trusses; partial double-layer (single-layer) lattice shells; prestressed grid structures; cable-stayed grid structures; special grid structures; new types of joints; theoretical work and application research. Prospects for steel space structures in the 21st century are presented at the end of this paper.

Abstract:This paper provides a state-of-the-art review on practical application and research advances of space structures in China.The main contents of the paper include: the optimization,improvement and innovation on the form of space structures;the collapse mechanism,elastic-plastic analysis and ultimate bearing capacity of nodal joints in space structures;super long span structures;development from heavy roofs to light roofs,from rigid structural systems to flexible systems;research and development of cable domes;simulation on the whole construction process and new construction methods of large space structures;development from fixed roofs to retractable roofs;development from simple design technology to manufacture informative integration technology;advances in theoretical research on space structures and health monitoring and reinforcing technology of space structures.Further research topics for the application and development of long-span space structures in China are finally presented.

Abstract:All the current circumstances, such as the increasing steel products in Hebei, the arising awareness of environmental protection, the lack of land resources, the requirement of the residential industrialization, the favorable policy of the government as well as the unique advantages of the steel structures, have provided large developing space for the steel residential system. Meanwhile, the development of the steel residential system should comply to the regulation of the industrialization, which means to establish a huge networking system to connect a variety of professions. Based on the foundation and the current development status of the steel structures in Hebei Province, some ideas and suggestions are proposed on accelerating the development speed of this new type residential system.

Abstract:Pretensioned long-span steel space structures are a new type of hybrid structures resulting from combining modem prestressing technology with long-span structures such as space grid structures (including space trusses and lattice shells), cable-bar tensioned structures and spatial truss structures. These structures have been developed rapidly and have found many applications in China in the recent decade. This paper provides a review of applications and developments of pretensioned long-span steel structures in China. The following topics on new technologies and new structures are given emphasis: prestressed grid structures, cable-stayed grid structures, beam string structures and prestressed segmental steel trusses. Prospects for pretensioned steel space structures in the 21st century are presented at the end of the paper.
Wind-resistant safety analysis of light-weight steel portal frame structures

Abstract:In order to investigate the wind-resistant safety conditions of light-weight steel portal frame structures, the wind pressures on the surface of a light-weight steel industrial building located at the southeast coastal area of China were measured by means of the wind-tunnel test technique. The wind loads under two most unfavorable wind directions obtained from the measured data and the loads determined from the load code for building structures and the technical specification for steel gable frame structures were applied to the unfavorable frame of the building. The nonlinear load-capacity analyses were then performed using the refined plate/shell element based finite element method, and the wind-resistant safety factors and ultimate-state failure modes of the frame were thereafter found. Analysis and comparison of the obtained wind-resistant safety factors under different load cases, indicate that the degrees of safety redundancy of the frame in consideration under the wind load determined from the steel gable frame specification and the extreme wind load from the wind tunnel test are relatively low, and the wind resistant design in accordance with the load code wind loading (no gust factor included) would probably lead the frame to an unsafe condition. A simple and effective beam-column connection enhancement measure is proposed thereafter, by which the safety level of the frame could be considerably improved and the sensibility to initial imperfections could be reduced.

Abstract:This paper introduces a new type of lightweight frame housing system using bamboo instead of wood. The research sheds light on the future direction of utilizing bamboo, which is a green and renewable resource unique to China. The paper summarizes the experiments, design and engineering applications of modern bamboo single family houses to date. The lightweight bamboo frame house system adopts similar features as the so called two by four construction for timber houses in North America, with increased degree of modular design. Most of the manufacturing process is allocated in factory to produce prefabricated subassemblies, thus the in-situ work is greatly reduced and construction period is shortened. The design and construction of the bamboo house is based on the properties of bamboo, including high strength/weight and stiffness/weight ratios, prefabrication and lower CO2 emission comparing with other conventional materials. Mechanical properties, seismic design and some other crucial techniques were investigated to establish the laminated bamboo single family housing system. As demonstrated in several single family houses constructed, the potential of using lightweight bamboo frame system in commercial and residential buildings as an alternative form for environmentally friendly and sustainable construction is demonstrated.

Abstract:Assembled steel structure residential houses have the significant advantages of light weight, high strength and a high degree of utilization of space, which is an important development direction of the future residential industry for meeting the strategic needs of China's "four sections -environmental protection", sustainable development of the construction industry, and the technical requirements of industrialization of housing construction. This paper reviews and summarizes the current status and research progress on the static performance and seismic performance of fabricated multi-story steel column-column connections, including connection types, tests, finite element analysis, etc. These results provide a reference for the further research work and establishing the design methods on column-column connections in the steel structures, as is expected to promote the application of the column-column connections in China's steel structure engineering.
Appliaction Of Lightweight Aggregate Concrete In The Composite Slabs Of Multi-Storey Lightweight Steel Structure

Abstract:Compared to normal aggregate concrete (NAC), the lightweight aggregate concrete (LAC) has many advantages, such as light deadweight, good thermal insulation behavior, efficient fire resistance and good seismic behavior, by using lightweight aggregates. Consequently, it has a more and more widespread application in multi-storey lightweight constructions abroad. Nonetheless, researches on LAC are limited in China, so the corresponding application scope is restricted. For steel-concrete composite slabs, by using the LAC. on one hand the section dimensions of columns and beams can be reduced, so can that of the foundations. On the other hand, the fairly bigger stiffness of composite slabs could overcome the problem of excessive deflection which would probably coursed by LAC slabs. Therefore, the steel-concrete composite slab with LAC is a reasonable structure form of floors which could also bring in a good economic benefit. In this paper, the researches and application on LAC are reviewed, and the application prospect of LAC in the composite slabs of multi-storey lightweight steel structures, which including the traditional T-shape composite slab and the new type of composite slim slab, is analyzed. In addition, the difference in load bearing behavior between NAC and LAC are illustrated. At the end, the design points and construction details of LAC composite slabs are proposed which may be referred in practical projects.
