Abstract:In order to investigate the wind-resistant safety conditions of light-weight steel portal frame structures, the wind pressures on the surface of a light-weight steel industrial building located at the southeast coastal area of China were measured by means of the wind-tunnel test technique. The wind loads under two most unfavorable wind directions obtained from the measured data and the loads determined from the load code for building structures and the technical specification for steel gable frame structures were applied to the unfavorable frame of the building. The nonlinear load-capacity analyses were then performed using the refined plate/shell element based finite element method, and the wind-resistant safety factors and ultimate-state failure modes of the frame were thereafter found. Analysis and comparison of the obtained wind-resistant safety factors under different load cases, indicate that the degrees of safety redundancy of the frame in consideration under the wind load determined from the steel gable frame specification and the extreme wind load from the wind tunnel test are relatively low, and the wind resistant design in accordance with the load code wind loading (no gust factor included) would probably lead the frame to an unsafe condition. A simple and effective beam-column connection enhancement measure is proposed thereafter, by which the safety level of the frame could be considerably improved and the sensibility to initial imperfections could be reduced.

Abstract:Industrial buildings of portal frame light steel structure present an advantage of light weight over industrial buildings of traditional concrete structure. But one difficulty involving the foundation design of portal frame light steel structure industrial building results from the excessively large eccentricity due to the light dead weight with the result that the normal method of foundation design may fail to ensure the required safety. Larger moment arising from the design and calculation of the foundation of several practical examples is overcome by the use of the calculation method of supplemented composing working condition. Considerations of selecting and optimizing the form of the foundation in the design of industrial buildings of light steel structure are discussed in detail from the point of design steel cost. Some general principles of the foundation form selection and construction measures in foundation design are also presented.

Abstract:Research purposes: This paper researches the design of a roof truss without columns according to the requirement,such as astylar,clearer,more comfortable and so on in the rebuilding engineering of one railway station. Research methods:Combined with the situation of the construction plot,the major structure,whose plane size is 41 m×400 m in the single-span complete coverage structure style,has no supporting column inside and only has 28 down-to-ground bracings at both sides.And space structure analysis software is adopted to do structure calculation. Research results:By the practice of a new spatial structure system of latticed shell with bolt spherical joints and down-to-ground pipe truss,this paper provides some successful design experiences and special detail construction measures. Research conclusions:The latticed shell with bolt spherical joints and down-to-ground pipe truss of the roof truss without columns can rationally embody the member efficiency and sufficiently display the architectonic effect.For structure in a massive figure,the influence of the temperature stress is remarkable.The structural stress performance under temperature stress can be significantly improved by the corresponding measures.The detail construction design was accomplished with the rational analysis methods,which ensures the structural safety and applicability.

Abstract:An elastic-plastic pushover analysis has been performed to a typical two-bay light-weight steel portal frame for investigation of the nonlinear load-deformation behaviors of the structure under strong wind loading. The finite-element model is first established for the portal frame. Then the monotonically increased lateral load and uniformly distributed vertical load representing wind loading are applied to the frame while the structure deforms from full elastic range to elastic-plastic stage. The loading process continues until the top displacement reaches its target value or enough number of plastic hinges occurs so that the structure changes to an unstable mechanism. The analysis results indicate that different lateral loading modes (top point loading or uniformly distributed loading) lead to almost the same deformation and failure behavior of the frame, and the final load-carrying capacity of the frame considerably decreases with increase of the vertical loading.

Abstract:With the application of lightweight enclosure materials in the steel structure workshops,the solid-web type portal frame is used in metallurgical workshop, instead of the traditional latticed structure,but the current design method only bases on the code for design of steel structure and the experience.In order to control the steel consumption and ensure the safety,an optimal design method for the portal frame of ordinary steel structure workshop is proposed,according to the contrastive analysis on current related codes and the engineering experience.One project case shows the advantages of this method,and this method provides a basis for the project design of the same type.

Abstract:Nonlinear ultimate limit state analysis was performed to a typical frame of an existing light-weight steel portal frame industrial building located at the coastal region of China using the refined finite element method.The wind and snow load combinations were determined from the current load code of China,and the corresponding wind-resistant and snow-resistant load-capacity redundant factors of the frame were then found through the analysis.The obtained results indicate that although the load-capacities of the frame under the two load combinations meet the current code requirement,the load-capacity redundant factors are relatively low if initial imperfections of the frame are considered.Furthermore the failure mode of the frame would change from a material yielding format to a local buckling format under consideration of initial imperfections.

Abstract:The last decades have seen major advances in the research, design and construction of steel space structures (space grid structures) in China. This paper provides a review of these developments, with particular attention to the new technologies and new structural forms employed in China. The following topics on new technologies and new structures are given emphasis: long-span and large-area grid structures; composite space trusses; composite reticulated shells; triple-layer space trusses; partial double-layer (single-layer) lattice shells; prestressed grid structures; cable-stayed grid structures; special grid structures; new types of joints; theoretical work and application research. Prospects for steel space structures in the 21st century are presented at the end of this paper.

Abstract:In early March of 2007,the Northeast in China encountered an unusual snowstorm,which caused a large number of engineering accidents.Light-weight steel industrial buildings with portal frame are poor on the overloading capacity,so accidents happened when they encountered such unusual load,and it is necessary to strengthen them.This paper discusses the strengthening design method of light-weight steel industrial buildings with portal frame after snowstorm,including strengthening design principle,frame strengthening and maintenance structure strengthening,etc,combining a certain project.And moreover,it gives suggestions on the strengthening design of light-weight steel industrial buildings.

Abstract:In early 2008, Southern China encountered an unusual snowstorm, same as the early 2007′s Northeast snowstorm. They both caused a large disaster area, involving many aspects of society and the environment. Steel structures of light-weight buildings perform poorly at overload capacity, when they encountered such unusual snow loads, and caused a large number of accidents. Analysis and reflection on the accident causes is necessary. This paper conducts an overall analysis of light-weight steel industrial buildings with portal frames, including structure safety, integral overload of snow, local overload of snow due to improper architectural appearance and secondary disaster caused by unreasonable snow cleaning, etc. The paper also summarizes the concrete causes of the above problems. The paper reflects on aspects such as structure design, architectural appearance design, code and snow cleaning method, etc, and provides suggestions on design of steel structures of light-weight buildings.

Abstract:The steel frame with portal steel plate shear wall unit presented here is a new steel structure by assembling the portal steel plate shear wall into the steel frame through bolt connection. For study of shear resistance and bearing capacity of the structure, it is necessary to conduct experimental research. Three frame specimens are made here, and two geometric shapes and the case of setting stiffeners and not setting stiffeners are considered respectively. The concentrated lateral load is applied in the test and displacements and strain were measured. The results show that the setting of the shear wall element has an obvious effect on improving the lateral stiffness of the steel frame, and the failure also shows obvious plastic deformation characteristics. It is also seen that the connection has no evident failure or deformation, which means the connection construction is effective.

Abstract:The distributions of stress and deformation were computed for the portal frame with prestressed cable-strut under various load conditions based on a grain warehouse with 72 m span,and the results were compared with that of different long-span portal frames.The method was developed to analyze the mechanical principle of portal frame with prestressed cable-strut.The results show that the effect of prestress of the portal frame with prestressed cable-strut is more effective than common prestressed frames,and effectively improves the mechanical behavior of portal frames due to deformations of the strut and cable should be considered in the design of portal frame;therefore,the deformations should be computed by geometry nonlinearity.

Abstract:This paper pointed out many mechanical problems encountered during the construction process for a large and complex steel structure,and their solving methods were outlined and discussed.For the new CCTV headquarters,the deformations produced due to the inclined towers and cantilevered structure system during the construction process were analyzed and traced according to the specified construction approach and sequence,and they have been used as guidelines for the steel structure erection and construction,as well as for glass curtain wall design and erection.

Abstract:The roof of the standard exhibition hall of Shijiazhuang International Convention and Exhibition Center has a folding plate shape.The roof is formed by inverted triangular space truss and secondary truss,which elevation varies on the basis of architectural model.The span of the main truss is 72m.The whole roof is supported by concrete-filled steel tubular columns.The structure system and the roof arrangement were introduced,and the wind pressure value was decided through the wind tunnel test.The results of the static,dynamic and stability analysis were provided.The sample analysis of important node was carried on.The results of the analysis show that all the period,displacement and stress of the structure fulfill the code,and the whole stability of the roof is good.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this study is to further investigate the potential benefits brought about by the development of modern technology in the steel construction industry. Specifically, the study focuses on the optimization of tapered members for pre-engineered steel structures, aligning with Eurocode 3 standards. By emphasizing the effectiveness of material utilization in construction, this research aims to enhance the structural performance and safety of buildings. Moreover, it recognizes the pivotal role played by such advancements in promoting economic growth through the reduction of material waste, optimization of cost-efficiency and support for sustainable construction practices. Design/methodology/approach Structural performance at initial analysis and final analysis of the selected critical frame were carried out using Dlubal RSTAB 8.18. The structural frame stability and sway imperfections were checked based on MS EN1993-1-1:2005 (EC3). To assess the structural stability of the portal frame using MS EN 1993-1-1:2005 (EC3), cross-sectional resistance and member buckling resistance were verified based on Clause 6.2.4 – Compression, Clause 6.2.5 – Bending Moment, Clause 6.2.6 – Shear, Clause 6.2.8 – Bending and Shear, Clause 6.2.9 – Bending and Axial Force and Clause 6.3.4 – General Method for Lateral and Lateral Torsional Buckling of Structural Components. Findings In this study, the cross sections of the web-tapered rafter and column were classified under Class 4. These involved the consideration of elastic shear resistance and effective area on the critical steel sections. The application of the General Method on the verification of the resistance to lateral and lateral torsional buckling for structural components required the extraction of some parameters using structural analysis software. From the results, there was only 5.90% of mass difference compared with the previous case study. Originality/value By classifying the web-tapered cross sections of the rafter and column under Class 4, the study accounts for important factors such as elastic shear resistance and effective area on critical steel sections.

Abstract:The cost of steel roof structure in the large-span hangars can be as much as 20% of the costs of the entire project, so it is vital that the structural solution provides the minimum overall building cost. In this paper, firstly the principles of the structural solution for hangars are presented. The structural features of hangars are also demonstrated. Then, the main systems of roof structure for modern large-span hangar buildings used around the world at present are introduced, diversified aspects influenced the choice of roof structure solution are also discussed. Lastly, some key problems such as site limits, stiffness of the roof structure, and steelwork weight of the roof and construction conditions are discussed carefully. The conclusions in this paper provide useful consults for primary design of large-span hangar buildings.

Abstract:To deal with the problem of relatively low level specified, both economically and scientifically, in current fire protection and prevention regulations, its global mechanical properties of the portal frame steel structure were studied analytically in the fire disaster, models with typical spans and heights were established for a series of portal frame structures and their mechanical properties were analyzed numerically during the 1 h burning process in the fire disaster, from which the failure modes and the rules of stress and deformation of the portal frame steel structure were obtained. With a real fire disaster example, influences of the surrounded members on the mechanical property in the fire disaster were discussed.
