Abstract:Corrosion resistance of sintered NdFeB magnets can be improved by alloying, but the magnetic properties are decreased at the same time. To solve this problem, Dy and Nb were added to improve corrosion resistance and magnetic properties. Experimental results indicated that the introduction of Dy and Nb in NdFeB improved greatly the coercivity, and also decreased the negative effect of Dy on the remanence. With 1.0% Dy and 0.8% Nb added, the magnets had the best magnetic properties. The increase of Dy and Nb contents also enhanced the corrosion resistance of Nd FeB magnets. The compound addition of elements is an effective method to obtain fine properties of NdFeB magnets for wide application in corrosion environments.

Abstract:A new nanocomposite magnet containing exchange-coupled SmFe3 and α-Fe phases has been successfully fabricated via melt spinning followed by magnetic annealing at 450–470°C for 10min. These SmFe3/α-Fe magnets show remarkably high remanent ratio, Mr/Ms, up to 0.93 and display a smooth single-phase-like loop with excellent rectangularity. In comparison, the non-field treated ones exhibit much lower Mr/Ms values and show a distinctive kink in the demagnetization curve due to the decoupling of the nanograins. The Henkel plot and microstructural examination confirm that magnetic annealing leads to much stronger intergranular exchange coupling, which is attributed to the formation of a magnetic-field-induced microstructure consisting of the SmFe3 hard phase with diameters of 80–100nm and the α-Fe soft phase with size of about 3–8nm. An enhanced energy product of 13.0 MGOe has been obtained in the ribbon magnetically annealed at 470°C, which is about 60% higher than that of the ribbon annealed without a magnetic field.

Abstract:Bonded hybrid NdFeB / Sr-ferrite magnets were prepared by mixing the two powders. The effects of the Sr-ferrite mass fraction on magnetic property and temperature stability property of bonded hybrid magnets were also fully analyzed. An empirical formula between energy product and Sr-ferrite mass fraction was gained at last, follow which the energy product of bonded hybrid NdFeB / Sr-ferrite magnets could be adjusted freely.

Abstract:Magnetic properties and intergranular action in bonded hybrid magnets, based on NdFeB and strontium ferrite powders were investigated. The long-range magnetostatic interaction and short-range exchange coupling interaction existed simultaneously in bonded hybrid magnets, and neither of them could be neglected. Some magnetic property parameters of hybrid magnets could be approximately obtained by adding the hysteresis loops of two magnets pro rata.

Abstract:A real-space phase field model based on the Landau-Ginzburg theory is employed to investigate the effect of grain size on magnetoelectric (ME) coupling effect in ferroelectric-ferromagnetic (FE-FM) composite. The ME coupling in FE-FM composite is achieved by transferring the magnetostrictive strain caused by external magnetic field from FM phase to FE phase. The simulation results show that ME coefficient increases first and then decreases as grain size increases within a specific range. The emergence of 90° domain in FE phase leads to the increase of ME coefficient. However, the affected range of FM phase becomes stable as the grain size further increases, which contributes to the decline of ME coefficient. The results suggest an optimized range of grain size to obtain higher ME coupling effect.

Abstract:Anisotropic bonded NdFeB/SmFeN hybrid magnet, with high density and magnetic properties, are prepared by mixing ultra-fine SmFeN powders and coarse NdFeB powders under a magnetic field that is characterized by a surface magnetic induction density of similar to 3000 Gs using digital tesla meter. Magnetic powders and bonded magnets are characterized and analysed by scanning electron microscopy. The maximum energy product ((BH) max), degree of alignment (DOA) and density of 25 wt% NdFeB/SmFeN magnet mixing powders with magnetic field (114 kJ/m(3), 0.556, 6.12 g/cm(3)) are increased by 10.68%, 16.32%, -1.13% than these of mixing powders without magnetic field (103 kJ/m(3), 0.478, 6.19 g/cm(3)) and 35.71%, 7.75%, 9.68% than these of NdFeB magnets (84 kJ/m(3), 0.516, 5.58 g/cm(3)). Effects of SmFeN powders entering into gaps between NdFeB powders and substitution of SmFeN on NdFeB make the actual density reach the maximum at the ideal mass ratio of 25%. And the oriented SmFeN agglomerate, produced by mixing powders with magnetic field, results in the increase of DOA of NdFeB/SmFeN magnet. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:By designing the [(Pr20Nd80)100-xDyx]30.5FebalM1.3B1.0 components (x = 0, 10, 25, 50, 75 wt.%, denoted as Dy0, Dy10, Dy25, Dy50, Dy75), we constructed a series of multi-main-phase (MMP) and single-main-phase (SMP) Nd-Dy-Fe-B bulk magnets with same average composition of (Pr20Nd80)27.5Dy3.0FebalM1.3B1.0 but with different chemical heterogeneities, as evaluated by Dy concentration discrepancy between Dy-rich shell and Dy-lean core (triangle C). triangle C increases from 2.8 wt.% for MMP Dy3-I magnet (-39.4 % Dy25 and -60.6 % Dy0), to 3.1 wt.% for MMP Dy3-II magnet (-19.7 % Dy50 and -80.3 % Dy0), further to 3.4 wt.% for MMP Dy3-III magnet (-13.1 % Dy75 and -86.9 % Dy0), compared to 0 wt.% for SMP Dy3 magnet (100 % Dy10). Corresponding magnetic performance at 20-180 degrees C is positively related with triangle C value, as evidenced by the best magnetic properties of MMP Dy3-III magnet with highest triangle CIII value than others. Further phase-field simulation underlies the governing mechanism for strengthened chemical heterogeneity in MMP Nd-Dy-Fe-B magnets, while also provides design principles for concentration graded magnetic materials.

Abstract:Isotropic bonded NdFeB/Sr-ferrite hybrid magnets were synthesized by using the warm flow compaction(WFC) technique.The effects of different types of NdFeB powder on the magnetic properties of and the exchange-coupling interaction in the bonded NdFeB/Sr-ferrite hybrid magnets were studied.The results show that the magnet made with the lean rare earth NdFeB powder shows the best performance;its Henkel plot is a typical S-curve,and its Br,Hcj and(BH)max are 0.38 T,524 kA/m and 21.9 kJ/m3 respectively when the mass ratio of NdFeB to ferrite is 3:2.In the magnet made with the nano-duplex NdFeB powder,there is almost no exchange-coupling interaction found and the magnetic interaction is mainly the magnetostatic interaction.

Abstract:Bonded NdFeB/Sr-ferrite hybrid magnets were synthesized by using warm flow compaction (WFC)technique,and the influences of WFC parameters on the magnetic properties were investiga-ted.The results show that the magnetic properties firstly increase and then decrease with the increase of temperature,pressure and time.The selection of parameters for WFC process is associated with the selected binder.When the epoxy phenolic resin BPANE8200 is used as binder,the optimum process parameters of WFC are 77℃,with loading of 900MPa,and holding time for 8min.The values of rema-nence Br ,intrinsic coercive force Hcj and maximum energy product (BH)max of the hybrid magnets are all obtained the maximum,that is,Br= 522mT,Hcj= 740.48kA/m,(BH)max= 39.82kJ/m3 .

Abstract:The effects of molding technology, binder content, barium ferrite magnetic powder content and particle size were studied to improve the magnetic properties of Nd-Fe-B bonded magnets and to reduce their cost. The results indicate that the density is an important factor influencing the magnetic properties of bonded magnets with the magnetic properties increasing with density. Bonded magnets with good magnetic properties were obtained using 900 MPa with 1.0%～1.5% (mass fraction) of binder. The addition of ferrite magnetic powder reduces the cost of the composite bonded magnets. Composite bonded magnets with good magnetic properties can be obtained with no more than 20% (volume fraction) barium ferrite magnetic powder. Bonded magnets made from a mixture of two kinds of magnetic powders with 100 mesh and 200 mesh particles in the proportion of 2∶1 have good magnetic properties.

Abstract:The alloying elements Al and Al/Mo were added into the intergranular regions of sintered NdFeB magnets and their effects on microstructure and magnetic properties were investigated. Results show that a small amount of Al and Al/Mo additives can Largely enhance the coercivity with a little Loss of the remanence of NdFeB magnets. Apart from the improvement of Nd-rich phase wetting ability arising from the individual pure Al addition, the improvement of coercivity can be attributed to the occurrence of a net-shaped Nd(FeAl)(2) phase in the intergranular region of the AI-doped and AV Mo-doped magnets and the segregation of Mo on the surface of the main phase grains, which reduces the magnetic coupling of the Nd2Fe14B grains and impedes effectively the propagation of the domain walls. Compared with the single element alloying method, the combined alloying of different elements to the intergranular region is more efficient to modify the properties of NdFeB magnets.

Abstract:Nanocomposite rare-earth magnet of Nd2Fe14B/alpha-Fe has attracted considerable interest because of its very high potential magnetic performance resulting from significant ferromagnetic exchange coupling between the hard and soft magnetic grains. In the present paper, a series of nanocomposite rare-earth magnets of Nd2Fe14B/alpha-Fe were prepared by melt-spun method. The nominal compositions were Nd9Fe85B6, Nd9Fe84.5B6Nb0.5, Nd(10.5)sFe(83) B6Nb0.5, Nd15Fe76.5B8Nb0.5 containing different content of alpha-Fe. The effects of the composition, nanophase constitution and grain size on the properties of nanocomposite Nd2Fe14B/alpha-Fe were studied.The results show that the grain refinement due to adding Nb has led to strong exchange coupling effect between the grains of hard and soft magnetic phases. By the optimization of the processing conditions, the relative high performance: J(r) = 11.27 kGs, H-ci = 8.99 kOe, and (BH)(max) = 18.31 MGOe is obtained in the Nd10.5Fe83 B6Nb0.5 alloy.The observation of Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) and Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM) shows that the size of the magnetic domain in the alloys is about 350 mu, much bigger than the mean grain size. The scale of this contrast corresponds to that of interaction domains, which is related to the exchange coupling effect and consistent with earlier studies. MFM is thus a useful technique for studying the interaction domain structure.

Abstract:In this study, we investigated the effect of crystalline structures on the magnetic properties of the Fe-based amorphous powder. We intentionally produced uniformly dispersed nanocrystallites inside the Fe-based amorphous powder using a combined process of mechanical milling and thermal annealing. In the case of powder produced after 30 min of ball milling followed by annealing at 400 °C, coercivity was decreased by 96.88% from 3698.73 to 115.49 A/m, and magnetization was increased 2.60% from 1.92 × 10−4 to 1.97 × 10−4 Wbm/kg. The simultaneous improvement of coercivity and magnetization can be attributed to the homogeneous generation of a small number of nanocrystallites as well as the release of residual stress.

Abstract:Prior treatment of NdFeB powders is vital to the preparation of bonded NdFeB magnets. This paper presents the effect of titanate and silane coupling agents on the properties of bonded NdFeB. It is shown that the magnet made of powders treated with titanate coupling agents got higher magnetic properties, while the magnet made of powders treated with silane coupling agents got higher strength. The effecting mechanism of coupling agents is analysed.

Abstract:In recent years, influence of volume, size and shape of particulate, stiffness of the polymeric matrix and mechanical preload on the magetostrictive property of polymer-bonded Terfenol-D composites have been investigated by several papers, however, few studies on the effects of the blending soft magnetic particles. In this study, polymer-bonded Terfenol-D composites composed with 20% volume fraction of Terfenol-D particulate and different volume percentage of carbonyl iron particle (i.e. 0, 10%, 20%, 30% and 40%) are fabricated. The changes of magnetostriction and magnetic permeability with changing applied field are tested. The experimental results indicate that with increases of fraction of carbonyl iron particle, the permeability of the composites increases, but the magnetostrictive property declines. The change of permeability is explained based on two ideal models, while the change of magnetostriction is explained from the perspective of energy transforming and mechanical property of matrix.

Abstract:The alloying elements Cu/Ti were added into the intergranular regions of sintere d NdFeB magnets, and their effects on microstructure and magnetic properties wer e investigated. The results show that small amount of Cu/Ti additives can enhanc e the coercivity greatly and have little effect on the remanence of the magnets, while Ti content is less than 1.2%. The improvement of the coercivity can be a ttributed to the segregation of Cu and Ti on the surface of main phase, which in hibits the growth of main phase grain during the sintering. At the same time, th e segregation of Cu and Ti can also prevent the magnetic coupling of Nd2Fe 14B grains to a certain degree and impede effectively the propagation of rever sed domain walls through the magnetic phase grains. With the Ti content increasi ng above 1.2%, a strip Ti-rich phase appears in the intergranular region, resu lting in the dramatic reduction of the remanence of Nd-Fe-B magnets. Compared with the single alloying method, the combined alloying of intergranular region i s more efficient to modify the properties of NdFeB magnets.

Abstract:Hybrid-bonded isotropic Nd-Fe-B /anisotropic Sm 2 Co 17 magnets with different mass fraction of Sm 2 Co 17 powders had been analyzed with the aid of magnetization and demagnetization curves. It was found that the Henkel plot of magnet with 10 wt.% Sm 2 Co 17 lies above the Wohlfarth line at low magnetic field but goes down slowly and then lies below the Wohlfarth line at high magnetic field. This shows magnetizing interaction at first and demagnetizing interaction at last, and presents an s-shaped behavior that has been seen frequently in nanocomposite exchange-coupled magnets. The demagnetization curve of 10 wt.% Sm 2 Co 17 content hybrid-bonded magnet exhibits a magnetically single phase behavior which has also been seen frequently in nanocomposite exchange-coupled magnets, indicating complex magnetic interaction between these two magnetic particles. As a result, a small increase in remanence and energy product are observed in hybrid-bonded Nd-Fe-B/Sm 2 Co 17 magnets with 10% mass fraction of Sm 2 Co 17.

Abstract:To improve coercivity without sacrificing other magnetic performance of NdFeB sintered magnets, a low melting point Dy32.5Fe62Cu5.5 alloy was introduced as an intergranular additive. Magnetic properties and microstructure of the magnets with different Dy32.5Fe62Cu5.5 contents were studied. At the optimum addition of 3wt%, coercivity Hcj was enhanced from 12.7 to 15.2kOe, the maximum magnetic energy product (BH)max was simultaneously increased from 46.6 to 47.8MGOe, accompanied by a slight reduction in remanence Br. Further investigation on microstructure and grain boundary composition indicated that the enhanced Hcj and (BH)max could be attributed to the refined and uniform 2:14:1 phase grains, continuous grain boundaries and a (Nd,Dy)2Fe14B hardening shell surrounding the 2:14:1 phase grains.

Abstract:In order to enhance competition of bonded magnets in the market,isotropic barium ferrite powder with low cost and high-quality is taken as the study target for bonded magnets.This paper found a new method for preparation of highdensity isotropic barium ferrite powder for bonded magnets with lower cost through a great deal of experiments.The method was to mix iron oxide-red with mill scale formed the iron oxide material,which was further mixed with barium carbonate according to the mol ratio,and then to pre-sinter the mixture at high temperature followed by dry grinding.The method eliminated the anneal procedure used in conventional production,hence greatly reducing the production cost.With ρ reaching 3.40g/cm~3,(BH)m being around 11.0kJ/m~3,the performance of ferrite powder and magnets for injection prepared with this method was improved.
