Abstract:Commercial ultrafiltration membranes have proliferated globally for water treatment. However, their pore sizes are too large to sieve gases. Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) feature well-developed microporosity yet are difficult to be fabricated into membranes. Herein, we report a strategy to prepare molecular-sieving membranes by partitioning the mesoscopic channels in water ultrafiltration membrane (PSU) into ultra-micropores by space-confined polymerization of multi-functionalized rigid building units. Nine CMP@PSU membranes were obtained, and their separation performance for H2 /CO2 , H2 /N2 , and H2 /CH4 pairs surpass the Robeson upper bound and rival against the best of those reported membranes. Furthermore, highly crosslinked skeletons inside the channels result in the structural robustness and transfer into the excellent aging resistance of the CMP@PSU. This strategy may shed light on the design and fabrication of high-performance polymeric gas separation membranes.
The Synthesis of Mesoporous Molecular Sieve MCM-48

Abstract:Mesoporous molecular sieve MCM-48 was prepared hydrothermally with CTAB, NaOH, TEOS as source materials. Characterization results obtained from the determination of XRD, TEM, Nz-adsorption, IR spectra and TG-DTA show that the products possess similar structure properties as those reported in literatures, Various synthesis parameters, including crystallization time, crystallization temperature and starting gel composition, have been studied. It was found that the crystallization temperature of 373 K was preferable, lower temperature leading to weak crystallinity, higher temperature leading to amorphous material. Crystallization time of 3 d was found suitable for MCM-48 formation, shorter time resulting in a low crystallinity, The influence of composition features such as n(H2O) / n(SiO2) and n(CTAB) / n(SiO2) on the product was studied.

Abstract:Membrane materials with excellent selectivity and high permeability are the key for high-efficiency membrane separation. New-type porous materials have developed as ideal building blocks for molecular sieving membranes due to their inherent properties, such as permanent porosity, high surface area, structural diversity and low mass transfer barriers. In actual industrial promotion and separation applications, porous materials need to be combined with substrates to prepare porous composite membranes. In order to reduce costs and increase processing flexibility, the combination of organic polymer substrates and porous materials has received more attentions. The multifunctional design strategy of the membrane material and membrane structure of porous composite membranes based on the organic subatrates is the key to realize the further improvement of mass transfer. In this review, we focus on the organic matrix porous composite membrane based on the participation of inorganic-organic hybrid materials and organic-organic composite materials, and conduct an in-depth discussion on the transport mechanism of porous composite membranes, and highlight diverse structural control strategies from the perspectives of macrostructural design and microstructural regulation of membrane structures. Finally, the applications of porous composite membrane based on organic substrate in precise molecular sieving are summarized, and the future opportunities and challenges in this field are discussed briefly.

Abstract:A novel route for synthesis of MCM-49/ZSM-35 composite zeolites with different compositions in a mixed amine system containing hexamethyleneimine (HMI) and cyclohexamine (CHA) has been developed. Furthermore, both MCM-49 zeolite and ZSM-35 zeolite can be successfully synthesized by adjusting the synthesis conditions in the same system. Especially, the MCM-49/ZSM-35 composites with more content of ZSM-35 zeolite can be produced under conditions of larger CHA/HMI molar ratio, higher Na2O/Al2O3 molar ratio and longer crystallization time. The structure characterization, acid distribution and morphology of the MCM-49/ZSM-35 composite zeolites are characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption isotherms, NH3-TPD, scanning electron microscopy as well as HP-129Xe NMR technology. These characterizations give obvious different pore structure of the MCM-49/ZSM-35 composite zeolites from the mechanical mixing counterpart.

Abstract:Mesoporous Fe-MCM-41 materials were synthesized by using ionic liquid 1-cethyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([C(16)mim]Br-+(-)) as template at room temperature and characterized by X-ray diffraction, N-2 adsorption-desorption, FT-IR, EPR, UV-Vis. Results show that these mesoporous materials possess high surface area. The pore size distributions of Fe-MCM-41 show that there are two types mesoporous. Part of iron atom still retain in the framework after removal of the template by calcination except those transferring to the wall surface. Fe species on wall surface are, of high dispersion. This indicates that stable framework-iron containing mesoporous molecular sieves Fe-MCM-41 can be successfully synthesized.

Abstract:In extremely dense system controlling H 2O/ Si �� 5 from amorphous gel Na 2O- SiO 2- CTAB (cetyltrimethylammonium bromite)-H 2O, the synthesis conditions of mesoporous molecular sieve Si-MCM-41 have been studied. Molecular sieve Si-MCM-41 have been prepared in H 2O/Si=1. 0-5. 0, CTAB/Si= 0. 0125-0. 125, Na/Si = 0. 05 - 0. 15. The characteristic of the method is clearly decreasing consumption amount of CTAB. As-synthesized samples have been characterized by XRD, SEM, TG-DTA and N 2 adsorption isothermals. These demonstrated that products possess typical properties of molecular sieve MCM-41.

Abstract:Poly(vinyl alcohol)-sodium alginate composite hydrogels were first introduced to synthesize robust and well-intergrown zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF)/polymer hollow fiber membranes. Through enough adsorption interaction with metal ions by chelation, sufficient nucleation sites for in situ metal-organic framework (MOF) preparation are provided. Using this method, we can not only easily prepare defect-free MOF membranes ignoring the complex modification process and seed deposition but also structurally fix crystalline MOF layers and greatly improve the stiffness and durability of MOF composite membranes. The strategy also gives the appropriate level of generality for synthesis of versatile dense MOF membranes on a variety of polymeric supports. The fabricated ZIF-8/polyethersulfone membrane presented remarkable gas separation performance with H2 permeance of as high as 9.66 × 10-7 mol m-2 s-1 Pa-1 and a high H2/CO2 separation factor of up to 29.0.

Abstract:The development of simple, versatile strategies for the synthesis of metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived membranes are of increasing scientific interest, but challenges exist in understanding suitable fabrication mechanisms. Here we report a route for the complete transformation of a series of MOF membranes and particles, based on multivalent cation substitution. Through our approach, the effective pore size can be reduced through the immobilization of metal salt residues in the cavities, and appropriate MOF crystal facets can be exposed, to achieve competitive molecular sieving capabilities. The method can also be used more generally for the synthesis of a variety of MOF membranes and particles. Importantly, we design and synthesize promising MOF membranes candidates that are hard to achieve through conventional methods. For example, our CuBTC/MIL-100 membrane exhibits 89, 171, 241 and 336 times higher H2 permeance than that of CO2, O2, N2 and CH4, respectively.

Various assumptions have been brought up to explain the formation mechanism of such mesoporous materials with ordered structure. This article introduces the development and reviews the current state of researches on the synthesis mechanism of the mesoporous materials.

Abstract:Preparation of mesoporous molecular sieve MCM-41 with complementary textural porosity and high thermal stability that results from thicker wall has been achieved by decreasing surfactant/silicon ratio of synthesis gel. MCM-41 material obtained by using the surfactant/silicon molar ratio of 0.10 consists of large and well-defined spherical particles. A further decrease in the ratio results in the formation of MCM-41 silica with the bimodal framework meopores and complementary textural porosity. The textural porosity results from the loose aggregate structure. The resultant materials retain ordered channels and large BET surface area even after thermal treatment at 1273 K for 1 h in air. The complementary textural porosity decreases the length of the one-dimensional mesopores and provides the facilitating framework access for the diffusion of mass.

Abstract:Mesoporous MCM-41 silica spheres were synthesized via modified Stöber method and modified by silylation. The MCM-41 pore structures, surface properties and morphological features before and after modification were examined by XRD, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, TGA, 29Si CP/MAS NMR and nitrogen adsorption–desorption. The results showed that the obtained MCM-41 silica had ordered mesoporous structure and spherical morphology. After silylation, the surface property of MCM-41 silica changed from hydrophilic to hydrophobic, whereas the MCM-41 framework and morphology were retained. The calcined and modified MCM-41 spheres were incorporated into a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix, separately. It is clearly shown from the SEM image that modification of MCM-41 spheres greatly enhanced its interfacial adhesion with the polymer. The filled membrane was firstly used for pervaporation separation of dimethylcarbonate/methanol azeotropic mixture and displayed superior pervaporation performance than pure PDMS membranes.

Abstract:2D transition metal carbides or nitrides, known as MXenes, are a new family of 2D materials with close to 30 members experimentally synthesized and dozens more theoretically investigated. Because of the abundant surface terminations, MXenes have been compounded with various materials by multi-interactions. In addition to the prevented aggregation and oxidation of MXene flakes, the MXene/polymer membranes exhibit outstanding mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties due to the synergistic effects. However, relatively little is currently known about the MXene/polymer membranes and a special review on the progress of the synthesis, properties, and applications of MXene/polymer membranes has not been reported to date. Herein, this Review starts with an introduction of the synthesis and properties of MXenes. Then the development of MXene/polymer membranes will be discussed, which aims to summarize various approaches of fabricating MXene/polymer membranes and their fascinating properties. The focus then turns to their exciting potential applications in various fields such as filtration, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, energy storage devices, wearable electronics, etc. Finally, outlooks and perspectives for the future challenges and prospects of MXene/polymer membranes are provided.

Abstract:A mesoporous molecular sieve was prepared by the hydrothermal synthesis method with symmetric Gemini surfactant 1,3-bis(hexadecyldimethylammonio)-propane dibromide, symmetric Gemini ionic liquid surfactant 1,3-bis(3-hexadecylimidazolium-1-yl) propane dibromide and self-designed asymmetric Gemini ionic liquid surfactant 1-(3-(hexadecyldimethylammonio)prop-1-yl)-3-hexadecylimidazolium dibromide as the template agent. The structure characterization results for mesoporous molecular sieves show that the material possesses a hexagonal pore structure with uniform channels. The mesoporous silica that was synthesized with self-designed asymmetric Gemini ionic liquid surfactant as the template agent possesses the largest surface area and its pore size and specific surface area are, respectively, 3.28 nm and 879.37 m2/g. The adsorption properties of the prepared MCM-41 for crystal violet were investigated, and the adsorption thermodynamics and kinetics were investigated. The results show that adsorption equilibrium can be reached under pH = 9 and 35 °C for 50 min, and the quantity of adsorption can reach up to 464.21 mg/g. The adsorption process belongs to Langmuir isothermal adsorption, conforming to second-order adsorption kinetics, and the adsorption process is an endothermic process.

Abstract:Dual-mesoporous materials are hierarchical materials with both small and large mesopores. The large mesopores offer pathways for rapid molecular transport and the small pores provide a large specific surface area, conferring excellent advantages for adsorption and catalysis. Herein, novel dual-mesoporous inorganic fiber hybrid membranes were prepared by compounding a rigid multi-scale halloysite nanotube mat (HNM) and silica aerogel (SA). The results suggest that HNM is a promising inorganic support for SA, affording a dual-mesoporous membrane with superhydrophobicity (water contact angle: 152.7°, specific surface area: 244 m2/g, high compressive strength exceeding 3.0 MPa). The hybrid membrane featuring a novel composition, low cost, and easy preparation can be applied as a catalyst carrier to ensure the efficient synthesis of chemical raw materials, and as a filter template to block volatile organic compounds and other harmful substances. Moreover, this processing strategy is potentially useful for fabricating sensing, ultralow dielectric, or thermally insulating materials for next-generation information technologies.

Abstract:Mixed matrix composite membranes (MMCMs) hold great potential to realize efficient CO 2 removal from natural gas. However, the reduction of separation performance arising from the interfacial defects, significant plasticization and aging effect in the thin films severely limit their application. Herein, we fabricated a series of polyimide MMCMs with MOF-protruding structure wherein amino-functionalized ZIF-8 nanocrystals nearly penetrate the thin selective layer. Through engineering the interfacial interactions, e.g., covalent or hydrogen bondings, we successfully fabricated defect-free MMCMs with the thickness ranging from 140 to 280 nm. The stronger interfacial interactions eliminate the interfacial defects and restrict the mobility of polymer chains under high pressure. Accordingly, the MMCM displays a high CO 2 permeance of 778 GPU and a CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of 34 with significantly improved resistance to plasticization and aging. Considering the superior performance, we anticipate our work could provide guidelines on designing advanced MMMs to tackle critical separations.

Abstract:Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) are a unique class of porous organic materials, which are constructed with π-conjugation structures leading to intrinsic micropores. The CMPs properties such as high surface area, intrinsic and rich micropores, interlocking and rigid structure, extensive π-conjugation and tunable band-gap, chemical and thermal stability, together with tailored functionalities, contribute to its abundant potential for application in fields such as photocatalysis, optoelectronics, energy storage, and chemical sensors. Recently, CMPs have gained importance in the field of membranes for chemical separation. In this review, we briefly discuss the historical development of CMPs, followed by a detailed description of the progress in state-of-the-art design, preparation, and application of CMPs in membranes. Additionally, we provide inference on the future prospects of CMPs as membranes.

Abstract:Using the adsorption and diffusion of large molecular hydrocarbon mesitylene in MWW type molecular sieves as the probe,the properties of MCM-22 and MCM-56 molecular sieves were studied.The molecular sieves were characterized by the techniques of XRD,N2 adsorption and TEM in order to investigate the relationship between the structure of molecular sieves and adsorption and diffusion.The results showed that the adsorption and diffusion of mesitylene were in the external surface(external cups) of MWW-type molecular sieves.MCM-56 molecular sieve possessed more acid sites in its external surface than MCM-22 molecular sieve due to its monolayer structure and staggered layer structure.Compared with MCM-22 molecular sieve,more acid site and curled surface of MCM-56 molecular sieve after calcination prevented mesitylene from diffusion on the molecular sieve.

Abstract:Carbon molecular sieve membranes (CMSMs) have drawn substantial research attention in recent years due to their ability to overcome the trade-off limitation between permeability and selectivity that is commonly observed in polymeric membranes used for gas separation. The performance of CMSMs is governed by various factors, such as the choice of polymeric precursors and their pre-treatment, pyrolysis, and post-treatment conditions. This review examines the critical aspects in the process of developing CMSMs based on polyimide precursors for gas separation. In addition, the mass transfer mechanism and characterization methods of CMSMs are discussed. Then, the performances of various CMSMs developed so far are examined against the Robeson upper bound limit, and pilot-scale applications and an economic analysis of CMSM-based gas separation are provided. Finally, the challenges and perspective are presented as the concluding remarks.
