Abstract:Integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) and solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems are considered as the most promising clean coal technologies. Syngas derived from coal gasification is the major fuel sources for IGCC and SOFC power systems; however, large amounts of sulfur compounds, mainly in the form of hydrogen sulfide, are produced during gasification. Hydrogen sulfide has to be removed prior to syngas utilization to protect downstream equipment from high-temperature corrosion. Therefore, hydrogen sulfide removal from raw syngas plays a key role in successful application of IGCC and SOFC systems. Hot coal gas desulfurization using solid sorbents is a more efficient technique for hydrogen sulfide removal, compared with conventional cold coal gas desulfurization with amine solution. This article reviews solid sorbents for high-temperature desulfurization, e.g., transition metal oxides, rare-earth oxides, spinel oxides, perovskite oxides, nanoelemental metals and mesoporous desulfurizers. Composite oxides that combine the properties of diverse metal oxides are promising candidates for hot coal gas desulfurization. The extensive background knowledge and the state of the art on high-temperature sorbents for hydrogen sulfide removal in this review provides inspiration and guidance to develop new cost-effective sorbents.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:In poly-generation and integrated gasification-combined cycle (IGCC) systems for clean energy conversion, it is essential to remove impurities such as sulfur species from hot coal gases prior to entering the subsequent units. This paper provides a comprehensive review on previous studies on high temperature removal of hydrogen sulfide from high temperature coal gases using iron-based sorbents. A two-step desulphurization process for hot coal gas cleanup is highlighted, which is integrated with direct production of elemental sulfur during regeneration of iron-based sorbents in the primary desulphurization step. Different kinetic modeling approaches for sulfidation and regeneration were compared. Limited research on activated carbon supported sorbents was also briefly summarized.

Abstract:Mixed metal oxide containing iron with the high-sulfur capacity and reactivity is considered as one of the most favorable sorbents for desulfurization in hot gas. The stability and life of iron-based sorbents are the main challenges for the hot gas cleanup techniques. Not only the effect of gas atmosphere but also the effect of ZnO and MgO on the stability of iron-based sorbent was studied in this work. The mechanism and factors influencing sorbent stability are discussed. The results showed that the coexistence of CO and H-2 result in the instability of the zinc-iron-based sorbents. ne reaction of carbon deposit is the crucial step affecting the stability of sorbent for hot gas desulfurization. ZnO in the sorbent is adverse to the physical stability of the iron-based sorbents. MgO in the sorbent hardly affects the physical stability of the iron-based sorbents but improves the capacity of removing the hydrogen sulfide from hot coal gas at 773 K.

Abstract:Advanced integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power generation systems require the development of high-temperature, regenerable desulfurization sorbents, which are capable of removing hydrogen sulfide from coal gasifier gas to very low levels. In this paper, zinc ferrites prepared by co-precipitation were identified as a novel coal gas desulfurization sorbent at high temperature. Preparation of zinc ferrite and effects of binders on pore volume, strength and desulfurization efficiency of zinc ferrite desulfurizer were studied. Moreover, the behavior of zinc: ferrite sorbent during desulfurization and regeneration under the temperature range of 350-400 degrees C are investigated. Effects of binders on the pore volume, mechanical strength and desulfurization efficiency of zinc ferrite sorbents indicated that the addition of kaolinite to zinc ferrite desulfurizer seems to be superior to other binders under the experimental conditions.
Interaction among Metal Components of Zn–Mn–Cu-Based Sorbents Prepared by High-Pressure Impregnation Method and Its Effect on the Removal of H2S from Hot Coal Gas

Abstract:A series of metal oxide sorbents for the deep removal of H2S from hot coal gas were synthesized using a high-pressure impregnation method. Semicoke was selected as support and the solutions of one or more combination among zinc nitrate, manganese nitrate, and copper nitrate were selected as the active component precursors in the preparation process of sorbents. SEM results show that these metal oxides can be evenly dispersed onto semicoke support with nanometer particle sizes by a high-pressure impregnation method. Simultaneously, the pore structures of the sorbents are significantly improved through the hydrothermal process of high-pressure impregnation. The desulfurization activities of the Zn-Mn-Cu-based sorbents in a fixed-bed reactor under feeding gas of CO (33 vol %), H-2 (39 vol %), H2S (500 ppmv), and N-2 (balance) are much better than those of single Zn-, Mn-, and Cu-based as well as double Zn-Mn-based sorbents prepared under the same operating conditions. The Z20M4C6SC sorbent can remove H2S from 500 to 0.1 ppmv at 300-550 degrees C and hold for 56 h. The sulfur capacity is 13.84 g S/100 g sorbent at 500 degrees C, which is higher than the simple summation of three single metal oxide sorbents. On the basis of the X-ray diffraction (XRD) results, ZnO, MnO2, CuO, and ZnMnO3 served as the active components of Zn-Mn-Cu-based sorbents. ZnMnO3 played a main role in the removal of H2S from hot coal gas. The addition of CuO in the Zn Mn-based sorbent can improve the dispersion degree of active components on support and promote the formation of ZnMnO3, thereby improving the desulfurization capacity of sorbent.

Abstract:A series of iron-manganese-based sorbents were prepared by co-precipitation and physical mixing method, and used for H 2 S removal from hot coal gas. The sulfidation tests were carried out in a fixed-bed reactor with space velocity of 2000 h −1 (STP). The results show that the suitable addition of manganese oxide in iron-based sorbent can decrease H 2 S and COS concentration in exit before breakthrough due to its simultaneous reaction capability with H 2 S and COS. Fe 3 O 4 and MnO are the initial active components in iron-manganese-based sorbent, and FeO and Fe are active components formed by reduction during sulfidation. The crystal phases of iron affect obviously their desulfurization capacity. The reducibility of sorbent changes with the content of MnO in sorbent. S7F3M and S3F7M have bigger sulfur capacities (32.68 and 32.30 gS/100 g total active component), while S5F5M has smaller sulfur capacity (21.92 gS/100 g total active component). S7F3M sorbent has stable sulfidation performance in three sulfidation-regeneration cycles and no apparent structure degradation. The sulfidation performance of iron-manganese-based sorbent is also related with its specific surface area and pore volume.

Abstract:Before syngas from gasification of biomass could be used as synthesis fuel or chemical feedstock, it requires the removal of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) to meet the purity standard level of those applications. In this study, Zn-Fe/ Al2O3 were successfully synthesized by a microwave-assisted wet incipient impregnation technique for use as adsorbent for H2S removal. The characterization of synthesized adsorbents showed that the oxide form of Zn and Fe present on the surface of adsorbents were zinc oxide (ZnO), magnetite (Fe3O4), and zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4). While the reduction of adsorbent was mostly due to that of iron oxide. The reduced adsorbents might consist of ZnO/Fe3O4/FeO/Fe on alumina as support. At relatively high space velocity (26,000 h(-1)) the adsorbents were able to reduce the H2S concentration from 250 ppm at the inlet to around 45 ppm, 35 ppm, and 25 ppm at the outlet by adsorbent 1ZnFe, 2ZnFe, and 3ZnFe; respectively. The removal efficiency for adsorbent 1ZnFe, 2ZnFe, and 3ZnFe were 82%, 86%, and 90%; respectively. Results also shown an increase in adsorbent lifetime with the increase of the Zn to Fe ratio.

Abstract:This paper deals with the simultaneous removal of H2S and COS in the temperature range of 400–650°C at 1bar by using iron-based sorbents. The iron-based sorbents were prepared using iron oxide and cerium oxide with coal fine ash as the support. Simulated coal gas was used in the sulfidation experiments and 5% O2 in N2 gas was used for regeneration of sorbents. Both sulfidation and regeneration experiments have been carried out using a fixed-bed quartz reactor. The product gases were analyzed using a GC equipped with a TCD and a FPD. The results demonstrated that both H2S and COS can be effectively reduced using the iron-based sorbents supported on fine coal ash. XRD analysis shows that Fe1−xS phase has formed during sulfidation indicating a high sulfur capacity of the sorbent. The mechanism of the removal of COS simultaneously with H2S is also discussed.
Two-step hot coal gas desulphurization process integrated with direct production of elemental sulfur using iron-based sorbents: A preliminary study

Abstract:The paper proposed a two-step desulphurization process using iron-based high temperature sorbents for removal of hydrogen sulfide from hot coal gases after coal gasification. The authors use the mixture of iron oxide with other metal oxides (e.g. Ce) supported by ash from a coalgangue- fired power plant to prepare high temperature desulphurization sorbents. The two-step desulphurization process is comprised of a first-stage desulphurization of removing majority of sulfur followed by a second-stage desulphurization to remove the remaining sulfur species. The process is integrated with effective sulfur recovery through direct elemental sulfur production during the regeneration of Fe/Ce based sorbents. Preliminary studies on sulfidation using a quartz fixed-bed reactor demonstrated that the Fe/Ce-based sorbents prepared in this study was able to remove >97% sulfur in the temperature range of 400-600°C. Simultaneous removal of organic and inorganic sulfur species was achieved.

Abstract:This paper focuses on sulfur removal technologies in industrial grate furnaces (IGF) and pulverized coal fired boilers (PCFB) with high flame temperature of 1200-1600 degreesC. The SO2 reduction without sorbents during coal combustion, thermal stabilities of sulfation products, kinetics of sulfur retention reactions of sorbents, desulfurization processes, and sulfur removal under unconventional atmospheres at high temperature are reviewed. It is proposed that some powdered minerals or industrial wastes with effective metal components may be used as sorbents for sulfur removal to promote cost effectiveness. Because the main reason that results in low desulfurization efficiencies in IGF and PCFB is the thermal decomposition of the conventional sulfation product CaSO4 above 1200 degreesC, it is key to explore new sulfation products that are thermally stable at high temperatures. It is also necessary to study the kinetic catalysis of alkali and transitional metal compounds on sulfation reactions under the combustion conditions of IGF and PCFB. The two-stage desulfurization process, in which SO2 is captured by sorbents both in the coal bed and the combustion gas, is promising for IGF, especially with the humidification of flue gas in a water-film dust catcher. The staged desulfurization process combined with air-staged combustion, in which sorbents are injected into the primary air field and upper furnace to capture SO2 under reducing and oxidizing atmospheres, is promising for PCFB. Flue gas recirculation is also an effective desulfurization process under O-2/CO2 conditions and can give a high desulfurization efficiency of about 80% in furnaces. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:A new preparation method of zinc oxide (ZnO) sorbents for removing H2S from hot coal gas was explored. High-pressure impregnation with semi-coke as the support and zinc nitrate as the active component precursor was used to prepare Zn-based sorbents (HZnSC). The desulfurization activity of the sorbents was studied in a fixed-bed reactor under the simulated coal gas mixture of CO (33 vol%), H-2 (39 vol %), H2O (5 V01%), H2S (300 ppmv), and N-2 (balance) at 300-550 degrees C. The results show that the desulfurization activity of the HZnSC sorbents is higher than that of the sorbents prepared using atmospheric pressure impregnation. The surface area of the semi-coke expanded from 16.65 to 272.59 m(2)/g. Nanoscale ZnO was acquired, and the active component was uniformly dispersed on the support with the high-pressure impregnation method, which afforded H2S removal from hot coal gas. HZn20SC (prepared with 20 wt % zinc nitrate solution) reduced H2S from 300 to less than 0.1 ppmv at 300-550 degrees C, and its sulfur capacity was 4.5 g of S/100 g of sorbent at 500 degrees C. It also maintained good heat stability during three desulfurization/regeneration cycles. The findings suggest that semi-coke with a low surface area can be used as a support of sorbents to remove H2S from hot coal gas using high-pressure impregnation.

Abstract:Coal is the most abundant fossil energy in the world. We arefacing with an important task about how to increase coal utilization efficiency and in the mean time to control environmental pollution. Advanced integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) and molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) are emerging as viable methods for more efficient and cleaner power generation. Development of technologies for efficient removal of H2S from coal derived fuel gas is now recognized as to be crucial to the economics of coal utilization in the IGCC and MCFC processes. The problem of high temperature coal gas desulfurization technology is the powdering of desulfurizer which considerably prevents industrial application. In this paper, iron-calcium complex oxides desulfurizer were studied and developed, and desulfurization and regeneration behaviors with various Fe2O3/CaO mole ratio were investigated in a fixed-bed reactor. The results showed that multiple sulfidation-regeneration cycles behavior can be better performed with mole ratio of Fe2O3/CaO=1. Sulfided sorbents can be completly regenerated with H2O and O2. H2S releasing is prior to SO2, pure sulfur was simultaneously formed. Desulfurization performance and mechanical strength maintained steady, and more over sulfur capacity gradually increased after three sulfidation and regeneration cycles.

Abstract:This paper summarizes the research progress of the removal of hydrogen sulfide from coal gas by the dry method with activated-carbon, metal oxides, complex metal oxides and activated-carbon supported metal oxides.The characteristics of activated-carbon and metal oxides as sorbents are analyzed, including treatment temperature, desulfurization efficiency and regeneration, etc.The complex metal oxides and activated-carbon supported metal oxides are regarded as prospective sorbents for industrial applications and have better performance during desulfurization and regeneration.According to the mechanisms of desulfurization, it is feasible to prepare sorbents for desulfurization with semi-coke and metal oxides due to the similarity of semi-coke and activated carbon in their properties.

Abstract:Iron-based sorbent was preferable for desulfurization from coal-derived gas due to economic consideration and favorable dynamic property. The intrinsic behavior of Fe-based sorbent should be primarily understood in the sulfidation process for improving its performance. A series of tests were carried out with Fe2O3, Fe and other compounds containing-Fe (FO) made from the same precursor FeC2O4·2H2O in H2S–N2 mixture in this study. The formation of H2 was observed with Fe and FO as sorbents. While SO2 was detected with FO and Fe2O3 as sorbents, its concentration in outlet was gradually decreased. The crystal phase and surface chemical state of fresh and sulfided Fe2O3 with different reaction times were characterized by XRD and XPS measurements. The result suggested that the intrinsic H2S removal by Fe2O3 would produce multi-phase of sulfides. The possible mechanism of sulfidation reaction was discussed.

Abstract:It is still challenging to obtain high-temperature sorbents with strong abilities of absorbing H 2 S and suppressing COS-release during coal-gas desulphurization process. Furthermore, the related inhibiting mechanism is unclear. Herein, functional Zn-based sorbents, with HTLCs (hydrotalcite-like compounds) as the precursor, were designed and fabricated via microwave-assisted co-precipitation method. Doping of metals (Mo/Ni/Co) with function of catalyzing COS-hydrogenolysis was proposed for sorbent modification. The resultant sorbents exhibit hierarchical structure self-assembled from nanosheets. As expected, Mo-, Ni-, and Co-doping result in significant decrease (by 78 %–85 %, 83 %–90 %, and 59 %–74 %, respectively) in the amount of released COS for sorbents. Moreover, Ni-doping generally causes the smallest negative effect on H 2 S-uptake behavior. It is related to a decline (by about 40 %) in the length of laminas unit and more porous structure of sorbents because of Ni-doping. Especially, the sorbent with the lowest Ni-doping ratio shows high sulfur capacity (27.1 g S/100 g sorbent, desulfurization efficiency: > 99.5 %) and low COS-release amount (1.5 × 10 −3 g COS/100 g sorbent). More importantly, it also maintains relatively stable performance over successive sulfidation-regeneration cycles. In addition, the analysis of COS-hydrogenation behavior over individual components in desulfurizers reveals that the doped metals greatly accelerate the COS-hydrogenolysis reaction, responsible for less COS emission of modified sorbents.

Abstract:A novel H2S sorbent based on SnO2 and Y2O3 is developed by a co-precipitation method for steam regenerative removal of H2S from hot syngas at moderate temperatures (400-500 degrees C). SnO2 Y2O3 sorbent is stable in a reducing atmosphere (i.e. 500 degrees C, 50% H-2) and achieves a 99.9% H2S removal during successive desulfurization and regeneration cycles, The addition of yttrium to SnO2 decreases the reduction property of SnO2 and no metallic Sn exists in the reducing atmosphere due to the formation of a pyrochlore-type compound, Y2Sn2O7. The SnO2-Y2O3 sorbent has a desulfurization performance deterioration with the increasing calcination temperature. The newly developed SnO2-Y2O3 sorbent can be regenerated by steam at 500 degrees C. In the eight successive desulfurization and regeneration cycles, SnO2Y2O3 sorbent has a cyclic breakthrough sulfur capacity of 9 mg/g without significant sulfur capacity loss. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:A novel sulfur hybrid mercury sorbent was successfully prepared by chemically activating high inorganic sulfur coal using potassium hydroxide (KOH). The optimal conditions for preparing the sorbent are at 800 degrees C with the ratio of KOH/coal at 2:4 by mass. The prepared sorbent, named ZY-2:4-800, containing 0.92% sulfur with a high specific surface area of 353 m2.g 1, has a wide temperature range for mercury removal. Between 60 and 180 degrees C, the Hg0 removal efficiencies of this sorbent keep above 95% within 2 hr under N2+O2+NO+SO2+H2O. This is because that O2 can slightly improve the mercury removal ability of the sorbent, and it shows great resistance to acid gas (NO and SO2) and H2O. The calculated Hg0 adsorption capacity of ZY-2:4-800 is 214.7 mu g.g 1, which is much higher than that of activated carbon sorbent (ACs) reported in the literature. Based on oS and Hg-TPDD analysis, it is revealed that the iron sulfide compounds in coal can be converted into active sites as S0, S22-, and CS during the preparation of the sorbents, and Hg interacts with these active sites and forms beta-HgS (metacinnabar). The excellent mercury removal performance and the low cost indicate that the as-prepared sorbent from the blend of the high inorganic-sulfur coal and KOH is a promising sorbent for mercury removal from flue gas. It is expected that this method could be applicable in converting other high-inorganic sulfur coals into efficient mercury sorbents.

Abstract:The present review paper highlighted on the recent progress of hot gas filtration, desulphurization and HCl removal in coal-derived fuel gas for combined cycle power generation (IGCC) or molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFC) technologies. As a critical process in the gasification system, hot gas filtration in the particulate control device (PCD) was introduced with enhanced understanding of equipment and operation, filter element and failsafe material properties, and gasification ash characteristics. The issues associated with the commercialization of hot gas filtration were also addressed, and some novel systems and methods were also discussed. The hot gas desulphurization in coal-derived fuel gas has concentrated on developing regenerable sorbents including the single and composite oxides of Zn, Fe, Cu, Mn and other species, and the reduction of metal oxides in the highly reducing atmosphere followed by vaporization of elements can be a problem for reactivity and regeneration. With regard to the removal of HCl, the studies have indicated sorbents prepared by pelletizing the powders of naturally available alkali metal and alkali earth metal substances can rapidly react with HCl vapor and reduce the HCl vapor concentration to less than 1ppmv, and some sorbents lab-made have very high chlorine capacity. The sorbents based hot gas cleaning also has some challenges. Kinetics studies showed that unreacted shrinking core (USC) can be applied to the modeling of H2S and HCl removal by sorbents at high temperature, and the surface chemical reaction and reactant diffusion by product layers between solid sorbents and gases were very important mechanisms. The paper also proposed and discussed a rational concept for the simultaneous removal of multiple contaminants including ash, H2S and HCl, which will offer a possible cost reduction by two or more processes in a single vessel for hot gas cleaning.

Abstract:The effect of calcium oxide additive in iron oxide sorbent for hot gas desulfurization was investigated by XRD and TPR techniques. XRD characterization showed that CaO was highly dispersed after the calcination of sorbents. Calcium sulfate formed in the desulfurization was decomposed and regenerated to CaO by reacting with CO before the next sulfidation process. Calcium participated in every sulfidation/regeneration cycle and contributed to the enhancement of sulfur capacity. The TPR results showed that the reduction temperature of the sorbent increased with the increase of the content of calcium. Calcium played a role of retarding reduction. Therefore, the addition of calcium oxide additive will benefit the utilization of iron oxide sorbent in strongly reducing atmospheres.
