Abstract:Rare earth element played key role and validity in magnesium alloy were summarized. The behaviors of rare earth element in magnesium alloy were reviewed based on physic-chemistry of metallurgical process. The properties and application of a series of important RE-containing magnesium alloys,i.e.,Mg-Zn-RE,Mg-Al-RE and Mg-RE alloys,were introduced in the company with the achievement of RE-Mg alloy in Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry.It was emphasized that the RE-containing magnesium alloys exhibited the excellent comprehensive properties,especially,in high strength/toughness,heat/creep resistance and corrosion-resistance. RE Mg alloy should be one of the important direction in the field of development of advanced magnesium alloy.

Abstract:The addition of rare earth(RE) as trace elements to aluminum or magnesium alloys can purify the melts,refine and modify the microstructure,reduce the inclusion . The addition of more RE elements can significantly enhance the comprehensive properties,especially mechanical behavior at high temperature. Research, development, and application for RE-containing Al alloys and RE-containing Mg alloys is reviewed with the emphasis on the effect of RE elements on melting,processing, and alloying of alloys. The future development of RE-containing Al alloys and RE-containing Mg alloys is prospected.

Abstract:To further expand the application of magnesium (Mg) alloys, development of the high strength Mg-rare earth (RE) alloys is strongly desired. The strength of the Mg alloys can be greatly improved through adding RE elements. This paper reviews the recent progress of the high-performance Mg-RE alloys, including alloy design, strengthening mechanism, forming processes, and applications. The review aims to provide references for designs, technologies, and applications of the Mg-RE alloys, which will contribute to further advancement of the Mg-RE alloys with excellent properties.

Abstract:During the past decades, with the increasing demands in lightweight structural materials, Mg alloys with low density and high performance have been extensively investigated and partly applied in some industries. Especially when rare earth (RE) elements are added as major alloying elements to Mg alloys, the alloy strength and creep resistance are greatly improved, which have promoted several series of Mg-RE alloys. This paper reviews the progress and developments of high-performance Mg-RE alloys in recent years with emphasis on cast alloys. The main contents include the alloy design, melt purification, grain refinement, castability, novel liquid casting and semisolid forming approaches, and the industrial applications or trials made of Mg-RE alloys. The review will provide insights for future developments of new alloys, techniques and applications of Mg alloys.

Abstract:With the increasing attention received by lightweight metals, numerous essential fields have increased requirements for magnesium (Mg) alloys with good room-temperature and high-temperature mechanical properties. However, the high-temperature mechanical properties of commonly used commercial Mg alloys, such as AZ91D, deteriorate considerably with increasing temperatures. Over the past several decades, extensive efforts have been devoted to developing heat-resistant Mg alloys. These approaches either inhibit the generation of thermally unstable phases or promote the formation of thermally stable precipitates/phases in matrices through solid solution or precipitation strengthening. In this review, numerous studies are systematically introduced and discussed. Different alloy systems, including those based on Mg–Al, Mg–Zn, and Mg–rare earth, are carefully classified and compared to reveal their mechanical properties and strengthening mechanisms. The emphasis, limitations, and future prospects of these heat-resistant Mg alloys are also pointed out and discussed to develop heat-resistant Mg alloys and broaden their potential application areas in the future.

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg) alloys are becoming one of the key engineering materials for aerospace and automotive industries because of their low density, high specific strength, excellent machinability and good diecastability, etc. In the meantime, conventional Mg alloys are limited for their low strength and creep resistance. Therefore, special attention is given on its applications at high temperature such as the transmission case and the engine block, In the near decades, much effort have been devoted to improving the properties such as strength, ductility, creep resistance of Mg alloys by adding rare earth (RE) elements, and it has been certified that the addition of RE do improve the performances of the Mg alloys. In this paper, we will review the progresses in the investigations of the Mg-RE alloys as a structural material, and also propose its application prospect in future.

Abstract:In recent days, the use of Magnesium and its alloys is preferred in defence, automotive and aerospace industries where large size and complex components are required in light weight. Besides, magnesium alloys are used in computers, electronic devices and biomedical applications. Alloying magnesium with rare earth elements (RE) is used to develop the light alloys for the stated applications at elevated temperature. Rare earth magnesium alloys are having unique properties over other metals, including a high specific strength, low thermal conductivity, good damping capacity and good castability. In this review article, the recent development of rare earth magnesium alloys will be reviewed from the view point of novel alloying designs. It has been revealed that in ternary alloy system Mg-ZN-RE alloy exhibited high strength and ductility. This leads the researchers to investigate Mg-ZN-RE alloy recently.

Abstract:Magnesium and its alloys are significant superior metallic materials for structural components in automobile and aerospace industries due to their excellent physicomechanical properties. The Mg–rare earth (RE) systems have attracted great interests because RE additions can improve both the deformability and the strength of Mg alloys through solid solution strengthening and precipitation hardening mechanisms. This paper focuses on the interface stability, together with thermodynamics and kinetics of nucleation and growth of the key phases and matrix phases in Mg–RE alloys. In this paper, the theory and recent advances on Mg–RE alloys, especially for the interface stability, thermodynamics and kinetics of nucleation and growth of the key phases and matrix phases, together with their relationships with micro-structures, and macroscopic properties, are reviewed. By combining the thermodynamics/kinetics integrated simulations with various advanced experimental techniques, "reverse" design of Mg–RE alloys starting from the target service performance is put forward as a kind of scientific paradigm with rational design.

Post-fire residual service performance of magnesium alloys reinforced by rare earths

Abstract:The flammability of magnesium alloys continues to be a significant barrier to their extensive application, and alloying with rare earth elements (REs) is an effective way to enhance the ignition and fire resistance of Mg alloys. Three commercial as-extruded Mg alloys (AZ80 and two Mg-RE alloys: EZ30K and WE43) were directly exposed to flame heating for revealing the evolutions of microstructure and mechanical properties, which is valuable in assessing the post-fire residual service performance of Mg alloy components. Results show that secondary phase dissolution, grain growth, grain boundary melting, alloy melting, and defects generation successively occur during the heating process. After short-term heating for 30 s, the elongation of AZ80 alloy increases significantly by 214%, from 3.82% to 12.01%, with minimal change in strength compared to the initial unheated state. This transformation is attributed to the recovery, grain growth, Mg 17 Al 12 dissolution and dislocation density reduction. Conversely, EZ30K and WE43 alloys exhibit minimal changes in mechanical properties after short-term heating for 60 s, attributed to the pinning effect of REs. However, in subsequent heating states, resolidified microstructure and the presence of defects lead to a noteworthy decrease in both strength and elongation. Among these three alloys, the fire resistance follows this ranking: EZ30K > WE43 > AZ80, primarily due to the high thermal conductivity of EZ30K alloy and the thermal stability improved by the addition of REs. Study on the strengthening mechanism of rare earth yttrium on magnesium alloys

Abstract:The thermodynamic stability of intermetallic compounds formed by most conventional alloying elements in Mg alloys is not high, resulting in the poor heat resistance of Mg alloys. Although rare earth (RE) compounds have superior thermal stability, the melting point of Al-RE compounds is generally higher than that of Mg-RE compounds. Therefore, in-depth exploration of the influence mechanism of RE compounds on the heat resistance of Al-containing Mg alloys is necessary. In this work, the thermodynamic stability of the might exist precipitates in Mg–Al–Zn–Mn–Y alloys was analyzed using first-principles calculations and verified via scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and other experimental methods. Based on their results, the precipitation sequence of the key RE precipitates was deduced. Furthermore, it was investigated whether the preferentially precipitated precipitates could serve as the nuclei of primary α-Mg based on the mismatch theory. Consequently, the refinement mechanism of Y on Mg alloys was elucidated. Besides, the complex alloying reactions in the multi-elemental Mg alloy system were simplified using the electronegativity theory and the Al–Y, Mg–Y, Mg–Al binary phase diagrams, and the strengthening mechanism of Y on Mg alloys was elucidated eventually. The results indicated that the preferentially precipitated granular Al8Mn4Y and Al2Y prevented Mg17Al12 from forming a network structure, and a reinforced structure was formed in which the modified Mg17Al12 particles were mixed with the newly formed granular Al8Mn4Y and Al2Y. Tensile tests and fracture analyses indicated that the reinforced structure improved the mechanical properties of the alloy both at room and elevated temperatures.

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg) alloys have received an increasing interest in the past two decades for their tremendous application potential. The strength and corrosion resistance levels of common Mg alloys are still relativity low, and especially they are to be improved simultaneously. The addition of rare earth (RE) to Mg alloys is believed to be beneficial for both the strength and corrosion resistance, and some RE-modified traditional Mg alloys have been studied and some new RE-containing Mg alloys have been developed by now. However, further simultaneous improvements in both strength and anti-corrosion require a better understanding of the behavior and mechanism of RE in Mg alloys. In this review, the common influence mechanisms of RE on mechanical and anti-corrosion properties of Mg alloys are summarized, and the latest research progress of RE-containing Mg alloys with simultaneously improved strength and corrosion resistance are introduced. It is demonstrated that the research on high-strength and high corrosion resistant RE-containing Mg alloys is still immature, and some opinions and suggestions are put forward for the synergetic improvement of the strength and corrosion resistance of Mg alloys, so as to contribute to the further development of Mg alloys with higher performance.

Abstract:Three kinds of Mg–RE alloys were prepared in the interest of analyzing the influence of the rare earth elements on the mechanical properties in Mg alloys at room temperature and elevated temperature. The microstructure and the phase composition of the three Mg–RE alloys were analyzed by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. It is shown that Mg12Ce, Mg17Ce2, Mg12Nd, Mg24Y5, and Mg41Nd5 distributed mainly along the grains’ boundaries of as-casting alloys. After experimenting on the mechanical properties of these alloys at room temperature and elevated temperature, the results reveal that the tensile strength (σb) of the investigated alloys in as-extruded is higher than that in as-casting. The strengthening effect of Nd is better than that of Ce at room temperature. An experiment performed at 250°C. The σb of No. 3 alloy is 219.6MPa which is higher than that of No. 2 alloy (187.3MPa) and No. 1 alloy (125.6MPa). The strengthening effect of Nd and Y is better than that of Nd at elevated temperature. It is shown that the strengthening mechanisms of rare earth are different at room temperature and elevated temperature.

Abstract:The effect of rare earths (RE) ranging from 0.1% to 1.2% (mass fraction) on hot cracking resistant property of Mg-Al alloys was investigated. The results show that hot cracking resistant property of Mg-Al alloys remarkably declines with an increase of RE addition. The causes of the decline are as follows: First, grain coarsening of Mg-Al alloys caused by RE addition reduces the fracture strain required for hot crack initiation. Second, RE reduces the eutectic microstructure of Mg-Al alloys, and as a result, shortens the time that the feeding channel remains open, making it difficult to feed the alloy. Furthermore, RE elevates the eutectic reaction temperature, which leads to the decrease in the strength of the interdendritic liquid film at the late stage of solidification. Third, when α-Mg dendrites form continuous skeletons, the interdendritic Al11 RE3 phase tends to block the feeding channels and increases the difficulty of feeding. Last, the shrinkage ratio discrepancy between Al11 RE3 phases and α-Mg matrix is prone to cause shrinkage stress and promote hot crack initiation.

Abstract:It is a high efficient method to prepare Mg-RE(rare earth)alloys in molten salt electrochemical process for its easy mass production and simple procedure.The RE element distributes uniformly and continuously in prepared Mg alloys.The heavy and light RE elements are extracted by electrolyzing from fluoride fusion and chloride fusion, respectively.Recent advances in preparation of Mg-RE alloys in molten salt electrochemical process are elaborately discussed from materials, electrolytic tank, electrode process, technical parameters and anodic gas absorption, and some beneficial advices focused on future developments about preparation of Mg-RE alloy are indicated.

Abstract:The research status of Mg-Nd magnesium alloy is reviewed.The influence of rare earth Nd on microstructure,precipitation behavior,mechanical property and corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys is introduced.The application prospect of magnesium alloys containing Nd is presented.It is proposed that the two main research directions of Mg-Nd magnesium alloys are heat-resistant magnesium alloy with high performance for special use and low cost magnesium alloy for commercial use.

Abstract:The poor wear resistance of magnesium (Mg) alloys has hindered their widespread application. Therefore, researchers have focused on how the addition of rare earth (RE) elements to Mg alloys and the modification methods affect their tribological behaviour. This overview reflects the research on the wear of Mg alloys. Several treatments and modification methods have been utilised to improve the wear behaviour of Mg alloys, including cryogenic treatment, deep cryogenic treatment, precipitation hardening, surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) and laser surface melting. Accordingly, except for SMAT, the other processes positively affected the wear resistance. Therefore, adding RE elements to Mg alloys and applying modification processes improve the wear resistance, especially at high temperatures.

Abstract:Biomedical magnesium (Mg) alloys have garnered significant attention because of their unique biodegradability, favorable biocompatibility, and suitable mechanical properties. The incorporation of rare earth (RE) elements, with their distinct physical and chemical properties, has greatly contributed to enhancing the mechanical performance, degradation behavior, and biological performance of biomedical Mg alloys. Currently, a series of RE-Mg alloys are being designed and investigated for orthopedic implants and cardiovascular stents, achieving substantial and encouraging research progress. In this work, a comprehensive of the state-of-the-art in biomedical RE-Mg alloys is provided. The physiological effects and design standards of RE elements in biomedical Mg alloys are discussed. Particularly, the degradation behavior and mechanical properties, including their underlying action are studied in-depth. Furthermore, the preparation techniques and current application status of RE-Mg alloys are reviewed. Finally, we address the ongoing challenges and propose future prospects to guide the development of high-performance biomedical Mg-RE alloys.

Abstract:Rare earth elements (REEs) have found application in metallurgical processes for nearly a century due to their unique chemical and physical properties but have gained increased attention in recent decades. Notably, the use of these elements may assist in the development of advanced magnesium and titanium products for applications spanning biomedicine, aerospace, and the automotive industry. To this end, current progress in this area, highlighting work done in Australian research organizations with particular academic expertise, is reviewed. Two areas that require further research are identified: the application of Sc and the heavy lanthanides to the development of novel magnesium alloys and the use of REEs as additives in the development of additive manufacturing of titanium parts.

Abstract:The main function of rare earth in the amorphous alloy is briefly reviewed,including deoxidation, purifying the alloy liquid,increasing the glass forming ability and improving the soft magnetic property.It describes the action of Y,Ce,Er,Nd and Sc on the main amorphous alloy system,such as Fe-based,Zr-based,Al-based and Mg-based amorphous alloy.By analyzing the physical and chemical characteristics of rare earth elements,it can contribute to choose and integrate the different rare earth elements,as well as improve the performance of the amorphous alloy.
