Abstract:The main function of rare earth in the amorphous alloy is briefly reviewed,including deoxidation, purifying the alloy liquid,increasing the glass forming ability and improving the soft magnetic property.It describes the action of Y,Ce,Er,Nd and Sc on the main amorphous alloy system,such as Fe-based,Zr-based,Al-based and Mg-based amorphous alloy.By analyzing the physical and chemical characteristics of rare earth elements,it can contribute to choose and integrate the different rare earth elements,as well as improve the performance of the amorphous alloy.

Abstract:Feasibility of electrodepositing aluminum coatings on the rare earth alloy in the acidic AlCl3-EMIC (2:1) room temperature molten salts was discussed, and the effects of pretreatment process of the rare earth alloy on aluminum coatings was studied. The microscopic analysis for the surface and interface of the samples was performed by SEM, EDS and XRD and the adhesion was determined by score-tearing test. The results show that the aluminum coatings can be electrodeposited on rare earth alloys in the room temperature molten salts. The pretreatment in kerosene for the rare earth alloy surface can prevent the emergence of rare earth oxide film; thus, uniform and dense aluminum coatings with good adhesion can be achieved. Under the condition of current density 2 A/dm(2) and deposition time 2500 s, aluminum coatings with the particle size of 10 mu m and the thickness of 17 mu m can be obtained and the current efficiency is close to 100%. The mechanism of electrodeposition of aluminum on rare earth alloy surface was also discussed.

Abstract:Electrodeposition technology,structures and properties of Ni and some typical Ni-based(such as Ni-P,Ni-W,Ni-Cr,Ni-Co) alloys are reviewed.The influence of electroplating technology and following treatment processes on the structures,corrosion resistance and abrasive resistance of these alloys′ film are discussed.Electroplating is a complex process,in which almost all the plating elements like the component of plating solution,pH,temperature,and current density can affect the current efficiency,compositions and structures of films,and these effects differ by electroplating system.Heat treatment after electroplating is an effective way to remove film inner stress,eliminate its micro-fissure and enhance its hardness.The existing problems and future trends which based on electroplating mechanism and future application of Ni-based alloys are also discussed.

Abstract:Fe-Ni alloys possess a range of excellent properties that are closely related to their composition, making them widely used in microelectronics, precision components, and electrocatalysis. Electrodeposition is a primary method for preparing Fe-Ni alloys. The codeposition process of Fe and Ni exhibits a characteristic preferential Fe deposition, resulting in a higher Fe/Ni atom ratio in the deposits than the Fe/Ni ion ratio in the electrolyte, which is categorized as anomalous codeposition. This paper reviews research findings on the mechanisms behind this anomalous codeposition, focusing on chemical reaction equilibrium and electrode kinetics. Key aspects include the hydrogen evolution side reaction, changes in near-surface pH, concentration profiles of main ion species near the cathode, and the competitive adsorption behavior of metal intermediate species. Additionally, the preparation and process parameters affecting alloy composition and underlying mechanisms are discussed. This comprehensive review aims to enhance understanding and control of the anomalous codeposition in Fe-Ni alloys, offering insights into the electrodeposition of other iron-group metals and expanding perspectives on metal electrodeposition.

Abstract:The effect of four kinds of rare earth elements on the depositing rate of Ni-based alloy brush plating coatings was investigated. The results indicate that all of the selected rare earth elements increase the depositing rate of Ni-based alloy coatings, and Sm increases the depositing rate most obviously. There is an optimum amount of rare earth addition in the plating solution. With the change of plating voltage to a certain extent, the results reveal no differences. The mechanism of the increase of the depositing rate was analyzed.

Abstract:The addition of rare earth(RE) as trace elements to aluminum or magnesium alloys can purify the melts,refine and modify the microstructure,reduce the inclusion . The addition of more RE elements can significantly enhance the comprehensive properties,especially mechanical behavior at high temperature. Research, development, and application for RE-containing Al alloys and RE-containing Mg alloys is reviewed with the emphasis on the effect of RE elements on melting,processing, and alloying of alloys. The future development of RE-containing Al alloys and RE-containing Mg alloys is prospected.

Abstract:The electrochemical properties of RE(NiCoMnTi)5 hydrogen storage alloys with different compositions of rare earth components (RE= La1-x-y-zCexNdyPrz) were systematically examined. The results showed that all La, Ce, Nd and Pr had an intense effect on the electrode performance. To show synthetic effect of rare earth elements, isographs of alloy electrodes vs quasi-ternary rare earth composition of the alloys were accomplished by first dividing the component elements into two groups and fixing definite ratios between the groups and then using a computer program for engineering graphics. The isographs were used to evaluate the properties of the multicomponent RE(NiCoMnTi)5 hydrogen storage alloys studied.

Abstract:The alloying of Ni with other elements is a common strategy to improve the performance of Ni coatings. Among many Ni-based coatings, NiMo coatings are widely used in various fields due to their excellent hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and electrocatalytic properties. Compared with other preparation techniques, the preparation of NiMo coatings by electrodeposition has the advantages of simplicity, moderate cost, and high efficiency. By selecting appropriate electrodeposition parameters, coatings with various properties can be obtained. In this review, the electrodeposition mechanism, electrodeposition parameters, and the properties of NiMo coatings are comprehensively discussed. The effects of electrodeposition parameters on the elemental content and current efficiency in NiMo coatings are also described in detail. Additionally, a summary is provided for the related content of heat treatment and energy field-assisted electrodeposition, emphasizing the potential applications of the latter in the preparation of NiMo composite coatings. This review summarizes and evaluates the previous related literature reports, aiming to guide the development of NiMo alloys and composite coatings with better performance.

Abstract:The electrochemical properties of RENi 5− x M x (M = Co, Mn, Ti) hydrogen storage alloys with different compositions of rare earth components (RE = La 1−x−y−z Ce x Nd y Pr z ) were systematically examined. The results showed that La, Ce, Nd and Pr all had big effects on the electrode performance. A mathematical-methodological approach to compositions was used and the results showed that all had the combined effect on the electrode properties. A computer program was adopted to draw out isographs including the isodischarge capacity, iso-high-rate dischargeability and isocycle life of multicomponent alloy electrodes vs. the composition of quasi-ternary rare earth elements.

Abstract:The research progress of high performance hydrogen storage electrode alloys is reported. The contents include the effects of composition of rare earth elements, the impurities (Fe, Si, Mg) and produce techniques (annealing treatment in vacuum and rapid solidification) on the electrochemical properties of AB5 type hydrogen storage alloys, the relationship between the electrochemical properties and the phase structures or composition of AB2 type Zr-based Laves phase alloys. The performances of several new multicomponent Zr-based hydrogen storage electrode alloys are also presented.

Abstract:The Ni-W-Er2O3 coating on 45(#) steel substrate was fabricated by electrodeposition. The microstructure and morphology of the composite coatings were analyzed by SEM, EDS and XRD. At the same time, the thickness, microhardness and corrosion resistance of the coating were measured by the magnetic thickness apparatus, a microhardness tester and an electrochemical workstation, respectively. The results show that the composite coating has a compact structure without obvious flaws and a good adhesion with the matrix. The composite coating can obtain high hardness, high tungsten content and better corrosion resistance with the addition of rare earth oxide Er2O3. When the addition amount is 16 g/L, the comprehensive performance of the coating is best.

Abstract:The alloying of platinum (Pt) with rare earth (RE) metals has emerged as a highly promising strategy for enhancing both the activity and stability of catalysts. Consequently, the development of methods for the controlled synthesis of Pt-RE alloys has received growing attention. This review comprehensively explores diverse synthesis methodologies for Pt-RE alloys, including physical metallurgy method, chemical reduction method, electrodeposition method, and dealloying method. Additionally, this review summaries the applications of Pt-RE alloys in various fields. By providing a critical analysis of existing literature and highlighting key challenges and future directions, this review aims to offer valuable insights and serve as a springboard for further advancements in the controlled synthesis and diverse applications of Pt-RE alloys.

Abstract:Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were performed in conjunction with SEM technique to study the electroplating process of Zn–Fe alloys. The technological parameters for Zn–Fe electroplating have been optimized and the smooth Zn–Fe coatings with high corrosion resistances were obtained. The results also show that, under our experimental conditions, the deposition of Zn–Fe behaved anomalously and followed the mechanism of three-dimensional (3D) nucleation. With the increase of deposition potential, the grain growth changed from progressive to instantaneous. Meanwhile, a new viewpoint was proposed to explain the anomalous co-deposition behavior of Zn–Fe coatings.

Abstract:The electrodeposition of Ni-Fe-Cr alloys was investigated in a trivalent chromium electrolyte on the surface of mild steel over a range of current density. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Tafel plot and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) measurements were used to compare plated alloy coatings and heat-treated electrodeposited alloy coatings. The heat-treated alloy coatings showed a relatively large impedance values and corrosion inhibiting efficiency. Moreover, the polarisation resistance, Rp, was obtained by EIS modeling using equivalent circuits.

Abstract:Rare earth element played key role and validity in magnesium alloy were summarized. The behaviors of rare earth element in magnesium alloy were reviewed based on physic-chemistry of metallurgical process. The properties and application of a series of important RE-containing magnesium alloys,i.e.,Mg-Zn-RE,Mg-Al-RE and Mg-RE alloys,were introduced in the company with the achievement of RE-Mg alloy in Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry.It was emphasized that the RE-containing magnesium alloys exhibited the excellent comprehensive properties,especially,in high strength/toughness,heat/creep resistance and corrosion-resistance. RE Mg alloy should be one of the important direction in the field of development of advanced magnesium alloy.

Abstract:In recent years, alloy and alloy-ceramic coatings have gained a considerable attention owing to their favorable physicochemical and technological properties. In this review, we investigate Ni, NiCo alloy and NiCo–ceramic composite coatings prepared by electrodeposition. Electrodeposition is a versatile tool and cost-effective electrochemical method used to produce high quality metal coatings. Surface finish and tribological properties of the coatings can be further improved by the addition of suitable agents and control of deposition operating conditions. In this review, Ni, NiCo alloy and NiCo–ceramic composite coatings prepared by electrodeposition are reviewed by critically evaluating previous researches. The use of the coatings and their potential for future research and development are discussed.
