Abstract:Nb-20Ti-16Al alloys doped with the carbon amounts of 0%, 1%and 10%(atom fraction) were prepared by vacuum non-consumed electric arc melting , followed by heat treatment at 1100℃for various time .Microstructures of the alloys were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA).High-temperature compression test was carried out at 1100 ℃in a computerized Gleeble-3800 testing system at a strain rate of 1 ×10 -2 s-1 in vacuum. Fracture toughness was determined using a Vickers indentation technique .The results showed that , during annealing at 1100 ℃, the supersaturated niobium based solid solution decomposed in C-free alloy, namely Nbss(Nb solid solution)→Nbss+Nb3Al.For C-doped alloys, the carbide solved meanwhile the Nb3Al precipitated, and the reaction could be expressed as Nbss+(Nb,Ti)C→Nbss +Nb3Al. With the time of heat treatment increasing, the size and volume fraction of Nb3Al increased and the volume fraction of Nbss decreased. The parameter decline of Nb ss and Nb3 Al was observed by the addition of carbon , indicating the assumption that carbon atom mainly dissolved in Nbss and Nb3Al and located predominantly at substitutional sites .For alloys after heat treatment at 1100 ℃for 5 h, with carbon content increasing , the volume fraction of Nb ss and fracture toughness decreased , while the compressive yield strength increased at elevated temperature .
