Abstract:High Nb-TiAl intermetallic compounds are a promising lightweight high-temperature structural material for aerospace engines due to their low density, high specific strength, creep resistance, and oxidation resistance. This study focuses on controlling the microstructure and properties of cast high Nb-TiAl intermetallic compounds with an atomic composition of 46Ti-46Al-8Nb through heat treatment. Three different heating temperatures, 950, 1200, and 1280 °C, were employed with corresponding holding times of 24, 1, and 0.5 hours, followed by furnace cooling (FC). The results indicate that heat treatment significantly influences the microstructure of the cast high Nb-TiAl intermetallic compounds, resulting in precipitated dendrite arms with lower contents of Ti and Al elements compared to the matrix region. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) results reveal that all samples primarily consist of grains with large-angle grain boundaries. Notably, the 1200 °C-1 h-FC cooling treatment slightly decreases the Rockwell hardness, whereas the 1280 °C-0.5 h-FC treatment enhances the hardness. Furthermore, heat treatment significantly improves the tensile strength of the cast samples.
