Abstract:High pressure pump is one of the key components in Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) desalination project. This paper introduced the development of an axial piston pump prototype which used as a high-pressure pump in SWRO desalination system. After the structure and technique data of the pump were illustrated, the main manufacturing processes of the prototype were introduced. The performance test of the prototype was carried out on an integrated water hydraulics test rig. After this, the prototype was used as a high-pressure pump on a SWRO experimental system. The test and application results prove that the pump is more efficient and quiet than other types, and is suitable for being used as high pressure pump in small and medium scale SWRO desalination project.

Abstract:The axial piston pump used as a high pressure pump is one of the most important component in small and medium scale Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) desalination projects. The pressure and flow ripple is an important factor which impacts the noise level of the pump. The axial piston pump for SWRO desalination uses seawater as its working media and the fluid properties of seawater are obviously different from mineral oil. In order to accurately simulate the dynamic pressure and flow of the pump, the special properties of seawater have to be considered. For this reason, the variational fluid properties of mineral oil and seawater were simulated and the results were compared. The model which describes the dynamic pressure and flow was presented. The pressure and flow characters of a single cylinder and a swash plate axial piston pump with five pistons were simulated using this model. From the simulation results, the delivery pressure and flow ripple when taking seawater as working medium are greater than the oil one if the geometry and boundary conditions are same. In order to reduce the pressure and flow ripple, the overlap angle of the portplate when taking seawater as working medium should be small.

Abstract:With cavitation model being considered, a LP (Lumped Parameter) model and a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) model on the flow and pressure characteristics of the axial piston pump for seawater desalination were created. Based on the geometry structure and operating condition of the pump, these two models were numerically calculated and corresponding results were compared and discussed. Both the two models can describe the dynamic flow and pressure characteristics of the pump. The CFD model is accurate and many details such as cavitation position can be predicted. LP model is a simplified model compared with CFD model. Because the damping effect of the inlet of the pump is neglected, this model is only suitable for rough calculation in engineering.

Abstract:In order to develop a high pressure axial piston pump for sea water reverse osmosis(SWRO) desalination project,the main performance and mechanical dynamics properties of the pump were predicted by virtual prototype(VP) technology.The solid model of the pump was created after the structural design,and then the rigid-flexible mixture mechanical model of the pump was constructed after the kinematic constraints were imposed and key components were flexible in solid model.The hydraulic model of the pump was created by the analysis of dynamic pressure and flow,and then the VP model of the pump was established by the combination of the mechanical model and the hydraulic model.By the VP model and corresponding simulation,the kinematics and dynamics characteristics of the moving parts and joints,the dynamic pressure and flow rate at the outlet of the pump,the dynamic equivalent stress and strain of key components were acquired.Results show that the main performance of the pump meets the design requirements and can be run at a higher pressure level for significant strength margin of key components.

Abstract:Because of the poor lubrication character of seawater,the design method for the slipper of the seawater axial piston pump has to be modified based on the oil one.The redundant squeezing force factor is smaller than the oil one when adopting redundant squeezing force method.When adopting hydrostatic balancing method,the flow regime of the variable damping is laminar but the fixed damping is turbulent.For this reason the pressure-flow character of the fixed damping is changed.So the length of the slim orifice is decreased and the stiffness theory of the hydrostatic bearing is invalid.

Abstract:Internal gear pumps have significant advantages over other types of pump, such like high operating pressure, efficient transmission of energy, long service life, little pressure ripples and low noise emissions. Due to the nature of water, such as, low viscosity, poor lubricity and high vapour pressure, the performance of water hydraulic internal gear pumps is totally different from the oil ones. Using tap water as working medium, the experiments of internal gear pump are implemented and the performances are obtained. The results indicate the floating plates are the key components of water hydraulic internal gear pumps which decide the efficiency and service life of the pumps. Then, the pressing forces acting on the floating plates and the contact stresses are calculated. Finally, the causes of wear failure of floating plates are investigated and some design principles in water hydraulic internal gear pumps are also proposed.

Abstract:To study the fluid character of axial piston pump,a mathematical model of flow condition in piston chamber was developed with compressibility of fluid oil.The model was further improved by analysis of movement model of piston,cross area of valve plate,throttle coefficient,flow loss inside pump,etc.Besides,the model of whole piston pump with its hydraulic system was developed with lamped parameter method.A simulation system was built by using Matlab based on the mathematical pump model.A visual graphical user interface was established to automatically analyze the relation between pump geometric structure,working conditions,system parameters and flow conditions of pump.The flow conditions of the pump were tested by using pump flow ripple test rig.It is shown that the pressure pulsation and flow ripple results calculated by the mathematical model agree well with the experimental results.The analytical error can be controlled within 5%.It can be concluded that the developed mathematical model has high precision and can accurately predict the fluid character of axial piston pump.

Abstract:The deep-sea environment has the characteristics of high pressure and low temperature. In addition to the extremely high requirements on the structural reliability, the ultra-high ambient pressure also has a great impact on the working characteristics of the hydraulic source. In this paper, the efficiency characteristics of a deep-sea hydraulic source are studied in the full-ocean-depth pressure range. According to the power transfer process, the efficiency of the deep-sea motor, gear pump and hydraulic circuit is analyzed. In so doing, the oil friction loss of the motor rotor, the internal leakage of the gear pump, the viscous friction loss of the hydraulic system, etc., are calculated. Then, simulating the deep-sea high-pressure environment by the pressure cylinder, the output characteristics and corresponding input power of the prototype are measured. By analyzing the experimental data, the efficiency characteristic curve of the hydraulic source prototype, changing with the ambient pressure, is obtained. The experimental and calculation results show that, with the increase of ambient pressure, the system efficiency of the hydraulic source prototype increases first and then decreases.
Fluid-solid coupling analysis for hydrostatic supporting slipper pair of axial piston pump for seawater desalination

Abstract:The micro deformation of the slipper body affects the load carrying ability of the hydrostatic supporting slipper pair. In order to study on it, the seawater lubricated slipper pair of the axial piston pump for seawater desalination was designed based on classic hydrostatic theory. After that the structure-fields of the slipper body and flow-fields of the slipper pair were calculated based on fluid-solid coupling method, and the flow-fields of the slipper pair when using mineral oil and seawater as service fluid were also calculated respectively under the same border condition but the micro deformation was neglected. From the calculation and analysis results, it is concluded that the damping effect caused by the slipper orifice and the variable flow channel is intensified due to the turbulent flow and change in velocity-field under seawater lubrication. The base body of the stainless-steel/composite macromolecular plastic slipper supports the main load, and the obvious deformation of the sealing region changes the pressure-field. All these make the load carrying capacity of the slipper pair decreased compared with the design value. So compensation methods such as reducing the length of the fixed orifice on the piston, optimizing the slipper orifice outlet, enhancing the stiffness of the slipper etc. can be adopted.

Abstract:A new type of piston pump with piston valving is described. The advantages for seawater pump with plate valving (or valve valving) belong to this pump. Meanwhile, the shortages of two types will be overcome in this pump. Its application should be bright. The dead volume is one of the key problems in this pump. So, the contents studied in this paper are the determination on seal length of dead volume, the operation time in pocketed water and the mathematical model (simulation) in valving process. The results would help correct design in a pump valving system.

Abstract:To give a behavior test on lubrication film of such key friction pairs as port plate, slipper plate in axial piston pump with high supply pressure or large flow, based on separated circuit of supply and loading one, the experimental system of lubrication properties of friction pairs in axial piston pump was developed. Research necessities of them and present main problems were discussed and the primary coverage of experimental research from theoretical lubrication model were analyzed, and aimed at their difficulties, system components, characteristics and key technologies of dynamic experimental system of lubrication film with new electrohydraulic control based on exact position feedback were brought forward. Film height measuring of several points on seal area, data of leakage flow by different film height prove that this experimental system is stable, reliable, and that it can meet the expected test needs and correlative researches on lubrication properties of friction pairs.
Numerical Simulation of Cavitating Flow in Water Hydraulic Axial Piston Pump

Abstract:In order to study the cavitation characteristics of a water hydraulic axial piston pump, cavitating flow in the pump was simulated based on Schnerr-Sauer model. The fluctuations of flow and pressure at the outlet of the pump were analyzed at different inlet pressure conditions. From the simulation results, it is concluded that obvious cavitations occur in the cylinder chambers which are in suction process. Cavitation regions are mainly located in the sides near to the rotation center, and more serious cavitations occur in the piston chamber which contact with the suction side of the portplate. Dynamic pulsation of flow rate and pressure at the outlet of pump are more severe when serious cavitations occur. Cavitations can be reduced if the pressure at the inlet of pump is increased, but excessive pressure at the inlet can induce pressure pulse in piston chamber which in suction region. When cavitations are decreased to some degree, dynamic pulsation of flow rate and pressure of pump can not be impacted obviously by the pressure at the inlet.

Abstract:A plunger pump has shortcomings that large leakage and low volumetric efficiency when the media is seawater.In order to research the capability of low leakage and high volumetric efficiency,optimize the pump's performance,a mathematic model of flat valve in the seawater plunger pump was established.The optimal design formulas about spring stiffness,preload and opening in flat valve were derived,and AMESim was used to establish the model and simulation.The simulation result demonstrates that the leakage is decreased and the volumetric efficiency is increased on the basis of optimal design formulas as mentioned earlier.And it supplies theoretical basis for the design of same type seawater plunger pump and flat valve.

Abstract:Virtual prototype technology(VPT) applied in axial piston pump simulation research was introduced. Dynamics model and hydraulic model of piston pump individually grounded on MSC. ADAMS and AMESim were built by means of VPT and actual piston pump parameters. Solid-liquid coupling virtual prototype of axial piston pump was put up based on the interface of the two models. Pressure pulsation of piston pump affected by oil viscosity and bulk modulus was investigated based on the virtual prototype. Pressure pulsation amplitude and rate increasing with bulk modulus as linear relationship while with viscosity as descending relationship are concluded.
