Abstract:Jet refrigeration technology with chlorofluorocarbon as working medium for recycling automotive waste heat is widely used.But there is pyrolysis risk when the temperature of generator is high.Chlorofluorocarbon has a greenhouse effect.Water as a natural refrigerant has heat stability and is better than chlorofluorocarbon.So according to the practical application experience of water jet refrigeration system and feature of vehicle air conditioning system,the paper puts an air cooled two-stage ejector refrigeration system making water as working medium and making a u-tube as throttling device.Through establishing systematic mathematical-physical model and taking numerical simulation analysis,it compares the system’s function at different condition.The result shows that the new system can effectively recycle the waste heat of automobile engine,and is feasible as automotive air conditioning system.

Abstract:A new ventilation system is proposed. According to the layout of modern garden offices, which are separated into several zones, a jet distribution is introduced to the separated working zone in order to realize the individual ventilation and the improvement of indoor air quality and comfortableness. The feasibility of this kind of ventilation is verified by analyse and experiment.

Abstract:A thermoacoustically driven pulse tube refrigeration system was modified. The latest test achieved a minimum temperature of 124.3 K with helium of 2.0 MPa as working fluid. The problems of the cold heat exchanger in thermoacoustic compressor and its influence on the pulse tube refrigeration performance were discussed. The potential application of thermoacoustic machine was described.

Abstract:This paper conducts a detailed theoretical analysis on thermodynamic performance of J-T refrigeration cycles using mixed refrigerants and one stage compressor with an infinite low temperature heat reservoir. Based on the above analysis, a new optimizing method under constant pressure ratio has been proposed, which is more practicable in the optimization of a refrigeration cycle. Experiments confirmed the theoretical results.
Working Fluid Selection and Thermodynamic Performance of the Steam Jet Large-Temperature-Drop Heat Exchange System

Abstract:Steam jet large-temperature-drop heat exchange system (SJHE) is presented to improve the heat exchange effect between exothermic and endothermic media in the heat exchange process. In this paper, with the higher efficient CRMC ejector, the mathematical model of the SJHE system is constructed. We compared the application scopes of two system constructions with 10 different working fluids and select the more feasible system construction as the optimal system. Based on the real properties of 10 environment-friendly dry pure fluid, R141b is screened as the best cycle working fluid for the system, using which the exothermic medium can be reduced to 33.7 °C in the district heating situation (primary water supply temperature: 130 °C, and the temperature lift range of secondary water is 45–60 °C). Moreover, the thermodynamic characteristics of the SJHE system are evaluated to achieve a better understanding of the thermal performance of this new heat exchanger system.

Abstract:In order to protect environment,it is very important to explore anew refrigeration method.For its unique characteristic,thermoelectric refrigeration is applied in some conditions.Numerical simulation has been developed for the air-cooled thermoelectric air-conditioner by experimental simulation on heat-insulating materials with different thickness,structure-shapes,work-conditions and air-flow capacities.The model and the method have been verified.The effects of the figure of merit of thermoelectric material and the heat transfer coefficient of cool/heat side on the performance of the air-conditioner are analyzed by the model.

Abstract:Nowadays, refrigerated food storage and transport vehicles are very common. However, with regard to the engine of vehicles, a significant amount of heat is discharged into the environment in the form of exhaust gas and jacket water. If the cooling system is used to convert this waste heat into cooling capacity, the thermal efficiency of the engine will be improved to a certain extent. Therefore, this paper uses two waste heat recovery jet refrigeration systems to recover heat from the exhaust gas and jacket water of the refrigerated vehicle. One is a conventional jet refrigeration system that uses only engine exhaust as the heat source, and the other is a system that adds a preheater upstream of the generator based on the conventional system, using engine jacket water to preheat the working fluid. This paper presents the results of comparing the impact of R141b/R123, R141b/R245fa, R142b/R134a, and R142b/R152a working fluids on system performance, and considers the effects of operating temperature and secondary flow pressure drop in the ejector receiving chamber on the system performance. The research results indicate that of the four selected working fluids, the R141b/R245fa (0.4/0.6) blend has the best overall performance. After the addition of a preheater, the system using R142b/R134a (0.6/0.4) hybrid working fluid achieves the maximum cooling capacity of 16.0994 kW and the maximum thermal efficiency of 5.45%, and the exergy loss in the generator is 1 kW lower than without the preheater.

Abstract:Introduces a miniature mesothermal thermotank which is designed for cooling the apparatus,the using temperature of the thermotank ranges from 15 ℃ to 25 ℃,the exterior size of the box is 49 cm,48 cm,45 cm,the temperature fluctuation in the box is controlled under ±0.5 ℃.To obtain an efficiently constant temperature in a small space,adopts an improved vapor compression refrigeration system.Furthermore,makes an experimental investigation on the thermotank to analyze the parameters that affect the performance of the thermotank,which provides basal gist for the further research of the system.

Abstract:Jet impingement/boiling heat transfer were experimentally studied using R134a as the working fluid.The heat transfer on high heat flux was studied and the fluid flow flux and latent heat of the working fluid on heat transfer were also studied.Data on heat transfer were achieved and the results show that the heat transfer coefficients were effectively improved while boiling was introduced into jet impingement.In this study,with an average liquid flow flux of 1.2 L·min~(-1)·cm~(-2),a maximum surface heat flux of 305 W/cm2 was achieved while the temperature of heater surface was 57.61℃.
Application of HCFC-123 to the direct-contact ice storage system

Abstract:In the direct-contact ice thermal-storage system, refrigerant is injected into water, so that heat transfer takes place directly between two substances in the evaporator. The negligible heat transfer resistance and temperature difference between the refrigerant and water result in a significantly increased heat transfer efficiency and lower manufacturing costs of the system. The direct-contact ice thermal-storage system is therefore more attractive than the conventional ones. The crux in designing the system is to select an appropriate refrigerant. In this paper, a comparative analysis was carried on the following problems of alternative refrigerants, e.g. HCFC-123 and HFC-134a: 1. gas hydrate reactions between refrigerants and water; 2. impacts of refrigerants on ozone depletion and greenhouse effect; 3. theoretical efficiencies of refrigerants and their practical applications in centrifugal chillers. The analysis showed that HCFC-123 absorbs heat and evaporates after it has been injected into water. Slush ice is formed instead of any gas hydrate due to the relatively larger molecular size of HCFC-123. As an environment-friendly refrigerant with negligible effect on ozone depletion, short atmospheric lifetime and low total equivalent warming impact (TEWI), HCFC-123 has high theoretical and practical efficiencies and has found wide application in centrifugal chillers. HCFC-123 is also considered as an excellent refrigerant applied in the direct-contact ice storage system.
Preliminary Analysis of Heat Transfer in Micro Water Resistojet

Abstract:The characteristics of boiling and the superheat limit temperature in the micro water resistojet were analyzed. The beginning moment of heat transfer in micro-thrusters was described by the classical model of Fourier's law, the non-Fourier Cattaneo-Vernotte (C-V) model and the non-Fourier dual phase lag (DPL) model of heat conduction, respectively. The governing equations were numerically solved by using the finite difference method. The results show that there is a time delay between Fourier model and non-Fourier models. The heating resistor and a little amount of adjacent water reach the temperature of 300°C quickly. However, most of the water is still in a comparatively low temperature.

Case Studies in Thermal Engineering

Abstract:Working fluid selection for closed-cycle turbo-refrigerators (CCTRs) for deep freezing, as a more fundamental topic, has not yet received careful consideration, leading to limitations in attempts to optimizing CCTR design in the early stages of cycle design. This paper proposed the working fluid selection criteria that to select the one leading to the lowest system weight and volume without compromising the system energy efficiency. Design criteria, such as specific speed and Reynolds number, and their dependence on fluid properties are introduced to ensure uncompromising-efficiency design of turbomachinery. Normalized heat transfer area of recuperator correlated with fluid properties is derived as the evaluation criterion for system weight and volume. Applying the proposed criteria, the comparison between potential pure gases shows the normalized heat transfer areas required for nitrogen, neon, and argon are 1, 1.54 and 2.18, respectively. Therefore, nitrogen among all pure gases has the greatest potential to reduce system weight and volume. The comparison among potential binary mixtures highlights the methane-nitrogen mixture with the molar mass of 24.1 g/mol which reduces the required heat transfer area by approximately 20 % compared to pure-nitrogen-based system and may reduce it by nearly up to 30 % for systems with larger cooling capacity levels.

Abstract:In this paper, four kinds of flow schemes which are refrigerated by two-stage turbine expander are respectively analyzed in terms of energy and exergy, based on the improved analysis and design for the system of cold neutron source by using reverse Brayton cycle. The most appropriate structure of helium refrigeration which is suitable for cold neutron source is searched for by synthesizing the two following kinds of optimum results: one is from the design for the expanding quantum of first expander in the parallel flow and the other is from the design for the compressor exit pressure in series flow.

Abstract:Vapor-compression refrigeration systems are widely used in refrigeration equipment. Theoretically, the process is typically divided into two isobaric processes: an adiabatic isentropic compression process and adiabatic isentropic throttling process. The refrigeration compressor is the main energy-consuming component in vapor-compression refrigeration systems. However, this device has a large energy loss and low overall efficiency in the adiabatic isentropic compression process. In this study, a modified vapor-compression refrigeration cycle with an isothermal piston is proposed to realize near-isothermal compression of a refrigerator to significantly reduce the energy loss in the compression process and improve the system performance. A real-gas compression process model is established, and the heat transfer index Hex is set. By changing the heat transfer index Hex, the performances of the vapor-compression refrigeration system under ideal and real compression conditions are compared and analyzed. Compared with a traditional vapor-compression refrigeration system, the coefficient of performance of the compressor with an isothermal compression process is increased by approximately 17%. The results also demonstrate that the lower the evaporation temperature Te and higher the condensation temperature Tc, the greater the optimization effect of the isothermal compression.

Abstract:Thermoelectric refrigeration is a solid-state refrigeration, without any moving parts and refrigerant. It can be easily integrated with other devices, and employed popularly in the thermal management system. In this paper, thermoelectric energy conversion is introduced firstly. And then, up to date development of thermoelectric material and application are introduced. Thermoelectric energy conversion proposed by IOFFE is still popularly used today to evaluate thermoelectric material and device. Bi2Te3 based thermoelectric material is still used in the thermoelectric refrigeration device. Doping and nano-structure are the two main methods to improve the scattering mechanism to increase ZT value. Thermoelectric refrigeration device is mainly used in some applications such as space cooling, chips cooling and temperature control. Three kinds of mathematical models(analytical solution, one dimensional mathematical model and three dimensional mathematical model) are mainly used to analysis and improve the performance of thermoelectric refrigeration device.

Abstract:As a type of solid refrigeration,thermionic refrigeration has so many advantages such as higher efficiency,lower noise and compact construction that they can be used in some special places such aerospace,electron cooling,Micro Electromechanical System,and so on.Based on the refrigeration principle,the reasons why it is difficult to operate thermionic refrigeration devices at room temperature are analyzed.The recent progress of thermionic refrigeration is summarized and commented in two respects:the space between cathode and anode is filled with vacuum and superlattice?material respectively.The future research development of thermionic refrigeration is also suggested.
An Experimental Study of Heat Transfer With an Impinging Circular Water Jet

Abstract:Impinging jet is widely used in both traditional industrial and new high-tech fields. High efficiency heat transfer in impinging jet cooling makes it an important method for heat transfer enhancement, in particular in cooling of electronic devices with high heat density. This paper presents an experimental study of heat transfer by an impinging circular water jet. A Constantan foil with the size of 5 mm × 5 mm was used to simulate a microelectronic chip with heat generated by passing an electrical current through the foil. A high heat flux over 106 W/m2 was achieved. The surface temperature was measured by a thermocouple glued onto the back surface of the foil. Both a free surface jet and a submerged jet were investigated. Effect of the nozzle-to-surface spacing as well as the jet speed at the exit of the nozzle on cooling was examined. By positioning the jet away from the center of the heating foil surface, the radial variation of the heat transfer coefficients over the foil was also investigated. Quantitative heat transfer data have been obtained and analyzed.
