Abstract:To deal with the difficulties in designing hardware and software of a six-axis Computer Numerical Control (CNC) system for Electro Discharge Machining (EDM), a hardware architecture of CNC based on open system was proposed in which a Programmable Multi-axis Controller was adopted as a motion control unit. Meanwhile, for improving the performance of real-time tasks in the software system, which was closely related to the machining process, the real-time tasks such as motion control and measurement of discharge states were implemented based on real-time Linux operation system. In addition, the Linux device drivers for Programmable Multi-axis Controller, NC program interpretation module, a user graphical interface as well as a technology database were also designed. This system can well solve difficult problems in designing six-axis numerical control system for EDM such as higher precision for machine motion control and excessive axes which are needed to be under control.
