Abstract:Magnesium silicate hydroxide (MSH), a self-healing agent at the nanoscale, is a potential novel additive material for lubricating oil. This study explores the impact mechanism of dispersibility and absorptivity on MSH's anti-wear performance, using experimental research and molecular dynamics simulations. Results show that MSH alone, as an additive to poly-alpha-olefin lubricating oil, does not exhibit anti-wear effect. However, MSH modified by carboxylic acids, including oleic acid, elaidic acid, or stearic acid, reduces the wear by 44.1%, 31.5%, and 21.0%, respectively. This reduced wear is a result of improved dispersibility of MSH and enhanced adsorption on iron interface. Carboxylic acid connects to the hydroxyl groups of the Mg-O/OH tetrahedron through hydrogen bonds and exist in a form where the alkyl chains deviate from the solid interface. In comparison to elaidic acid and stearic acid, oleic acid can form a denser modified layer on the surface of both MSH and iron, resulting in superior dispersibility of MSH in lubricating oil and stronger adsorption on iron surfaces, ultimately leading to better anti-wear performance.
