Abstract:Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM) has been widely used because it can obtain 2.55-7.37 dB coding gain without bandwidth expansion or reduction of the effective information rates. Since Viterbi Decoder (VD) plays an important role in the realization of HDTV system, the research and development on integration of VDs were conducted. factors which affect the performance of VDs and their solutions was studied. A completed VLSI circuit design for an 8-state 32QAM VD (30,000 gates in scale) is also reported.

Abstract:This paper provides an efficient low complexity soft-decision demapper algorithm for computing the log-likelihood-ratios (LLRs) of the 8PSK demodulations in the DVB-S2 standard. The proposed method has linear complexity, avoids the multiple square operations in the classical method and reduces the number of compare-select operations by half compared to traditional LLR computation algorithms. The demapper using the proposed method has been verified on Altera FPGA.

Abstract:In order to resolve the problems of large area,complicated routing and high power in decoding low-density parity-check codes(LDPC),this work presented a LDPC decoding approach,which is specified with parity check matrices based on circulant matrices,with structured memory and a corresponding partial parallel decoding architecture.By studying the structured parity matrix,the characteristic of the message passing between bit nodes and check nodes was indicated,and then a predetermined scheme of message storing with high flexibility and efficiency was proposed.Based on this scheme,a partial parallel decoding architecture was provided which significantly reduced the power and critical paths.Simulation of the LDPC in Chinese digital terrestrial television broadcasting standard on FPGA platform showed that the proposed decoding approach over AWGN channel achieved good performance,and suffered negligible performance loss compared with the double precision while effectively reducing the operation complexity.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel architecture of MPEG audio decoder, the input audio stream will not be serialized before decoding. Barrel shift register is used to fetch data from input buffer, which improves the efficiency of decoding process substantially. Dedicated hardware is designed to deal with input and degroup. In this scheme, the computation amount of bottleneck module can be reduced to one-fourths of the original one, and the memory storage requires half of the standard synthesis filter bank. This decoder can be used in DVB and DAB source decoding and etc.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a system-on-chip software hardware co-design for a statistical decoder. We use the context-based adaptive binary arithmetic decoder (CABAC decoder) used in the High profile of the H.264/AVC video coding standard as a design example. The design is aimed to strike a balance between software modules and hardware modules based on design constraints. It is capable of decoding one bin per clock cycle at high clock frequencies while maintaining a slim hardware footprint. Compared to existing statistical decoders, this design is aimed for a fast and compact IP core, well verified with standard video test sequence, and ideal for a SoC implementation.

Abstract:Based on layered decoding and semi-parallel structure, a novel architecture of multi-rate QC-LDPC decoder is proposed in this paper. It can support any code rates without any changes in hardware to achieve higher hardware utilization. The update of current layer and the comparison of next layer are processed simultaneously to improve the throughput. The check-to-variable messages are stored indirectly to reduce the storage space. Based on the proposed architecture, a QC-LDPC decoder of 2304 bits and 6-encodings style is presented. Then ModelSim SE6.0 simulation results verify that the proposed decoder is correct and effective. Finally, the decoder is synthesized by Synopsys Design Compiler on SMIC 0.18 µm CMOS technology, and the maximum throughput can achieve 318 Mbps at 145 MHz and 15 iterations.

Abstract:Based on the rearranged Min-Sum decoding algorithm, a high speed partially parallel decoder architecture suited for quasi-cyclic low density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes is proposed. A log-barrel-shifter is designed to reduce complexity of interconnection. By introducing micro-code-instruction, the decoder becomes independent with certain code rate and its regularity. It can also support any code rate without any changes in hardware. To adaptively control the power consumption under different channel conditions, a dynamic power control unit is adopted. Based on proposed decoder architecture, a QC-LDPC decoder for Chinese digital television?multi-media broadcasting (DTMB) standard (GB20600—2006) system is implemented based on SMIC 0.18 μm process, its frequency can be reached up to 100 MHz at the cost of 620 k gates.

Abstract:This paper presents a flexible decoder architecture which supports twelve combinations of code lengths-576, 1152, 1728, 2304 bits and code rates-1/2, 2/3, 3/4 for block-serial irregular LDPC codes based on the IEEE 802.16e standard [1]. Approximate-Min Scheme is used to increase memory efficiency during message processing. At least 68.4% extrinsic message memory is saved and this reduction increases with the code rate. A prototype of the LDPC decoder has been implemented and tested on an Ateral FPGA.

Abstract:Based on the syndrome computation,modified Euclidean algorithm,Chien's-searching and Forney algorithm,a novel RS decoder for CMMB system is proposed and realized.The RS decoding algorithm is simulated with MATLAB,and then the decoder is functionally verified and synthesized with tools of VCS,Design Compiler and ISE,respectively.The results show that the gate count of our design is as small as the best structure.Our proposed RS decoder has been tested and applied in a CMMB system.

Abstract:The goal of Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) over the past several decades has been the miniaturisation of chip size, along with increased computing speed and decreased power consumption. Miniaturization of size, high computing speed, and low power consumption does not appear to be able to meet the demand of consumers at this time. Quantum dot cellular automata is a more promising methodology that has the potential to optimise power, speed, and area at the nano-computing scale. In the field of nanocomputing, combinational circuit design has seen a significant amount of research and development effort. This article presents a comprehensive review as well as a proposed design of a decoder that has an accurate clocking mechanism and the best design. In terms of cell count, total area, cell area, area coverage, latency, QCA cost, and quantum cost, the novel 2-to-4 decoder achieves values of 87, 0.10, 0.0281, 28.1, 2.5, 0.625, 0.25, which is better than the prior work. Comparing the 2-to-4 decoder design to a standard design, the improvement is 72.64 %, 80 %, 72.71 %, 28.1 %, 64.28 %, 97,44 and 92.85 % in cell count, total area, cell area, area coverage, latency, QCA cost, and Quantum cost, respectively.

Abstract:Low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are one of the most effective error controlling methods, which now are widely used in multiple communication systems, for example, DVB-S2, 802.16e, etc. In these communication standards, the adopted LDPC codes are all quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes. The parity-check matrices of QC-LDPC codes consist of arrays of circulants, in which each row is the cyclic shift of the row above it, and the first row is the cyclic shift of the last row. This character of QC-LDPC codes results in the linear encoding complexity and opens the door for the multi-mode LDPC decoders with enough flexibility of resource multiplexing. Based on the quasi-cyclic character of QC-LDPC codes, a design method for multi-mode QC-LDPC decoders is proposed in this paper. The node memory is skillfully organized and can be expediently addressed by a simple control unit to save memory consumption in hardware implementation. Then this design method is implemented and test on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) platform. The test results show that the resource occupied by the multi-mode decoder is only a little more than that of maximal resource occupied by the single-mode decoder, and this multi-mode decoder can support at least 3 code rates with the throughput higher than 100 Mbps when the iteration number is fixed to 12 and the clock frequency is set to 200 MHZ.

Abstract:Decoder is a device that allows placing digital information from many inputs to many outputs. Any application of combinational logic circuit can be implemented by using decoder and external gates. In this paper, 2–4 line and 3–8 line decoder is proposed using electro-optic effect inside lithium–niobate-based Mach–Zehnder interferometers (MZIs). The MZI structures have powerful capability to switching an optical input signal to a desired output port. The paper constitutes a mathematical description of the proposed device and thereafter simulation using MATLAB. The study is verified using beam propagation method.

Abstract:A 2nd order ΔΣ modulator is presented. The feed forward topology with multi-bit quantizer is adopted. The digital summing is used. Single comparator successive approximation quantizer is proposed. Non-ideal effects of the quantizer such as comparator offset, components mismatch are modeled and simulated. Power consumption of the quantizer is given analytically. This topology is suitable to build high resolution ΔΣ modulator with low power consumption under low voltage.

Abstract:In order to solve the problem of complex architecture and large resource consuming in RS decoder,a dynamically reconfigurable RS decoder is presented.In the decoder,the syndrome calculation and Chien's search algorithm can be realized in the reconfigurable syndrome and Chien's module(RSCM) by reconfiguring the circuit architecture dynamically at discrete time.A decode control module based on state machine is given and is in charge of controlling the function modules in RS decoder.The design is realized by VHDL language in Quartus II 7.2.As it is shown in the result,the encoder could reduce the consuming in hardware resource,and the maximum frequency of this chip could reach at 124MHz.
