Abstract:An embedded system with complex embedded microprocessor inner resources and plentiful peripheral devices cannot work efficiently without the management of operating system. How to develop Boot Loader on the basis of the specific hardware platform is a key point and difficulty without question. The concept and function of embedded operating system booting program-Boot Loader which has multiple communication ports is introduced. In the ARM & DSP dual-core embedded microprocessor system development platform, by loading Linux operating system kernel, the authors expatiate on software designing methods of file downloading via three common communication interfaces (UART, Ethernet0, USB port).

Abstract:A bootloader's main function is to initialize the hardware, pass an abstraction of the initialized hardware, a hardware description, to and execute the kernel. While most bootloaders concentrate on ARM or PowerPC architecture, in this paper we propose a lightweight bootloader based on MIPS architecture. The lightweight bootloader is mainly for mobile devices. First, we introduce the architecture of the bootloader and some special requirements for mobile devices are considered. Then, based on the architecture, we implement the bootloader in MIPS assembly language and C language. To validate our research, we test the bootloader in a real MIPS-based evaluation board. The results show that our bootloader works quite well. With MIPS technology's role becoming more and more important in mobile Internet, we hope that the bootloader developed in this paper will be utilized in the future.

Abstract:Taking advantages of the modular nature of Linux, a set of Linux modules were improved to make Linux run on various SoC. The module improvement was including: developing a target-specific bootloader, designing a memory management module for the MMU-less processor, real-time improvement in scheduling module and organizing a small footprint file system for the flash memory. These modules can be reassembled on demands, catering for different boards and applications. Moreover, methods for developing embedded Linux are concluded, including tool chains and debug techniques. Case studies on two hardware platforms, based on ARM720T and M68K respectively, shown that the work satisfies application requirements.

Abstract:Nowadays, boot loader becomes more and more important in system, especially the embedded systems which are widely used in different field. Also, many complicated functions have been and will be integrated into boot loader. However, traditional boot loader in embedded system is located in flash or memory which is much slow. The system-on-a-chip technology provides the scratch-pad memory (SPM), which is small, isolated and located on a single chip. It is possible to make use of the SPM in boot loader to boot a system much faster. In this paper, we present a new way of loading process of operating system. Most of boot loaderpsilas work is assigned to another loader- SPMOS loader. It locates in SPM, which provides much faster access than SDRAM and FLASH. The experiment results show that the whole loading process based on SPMOS is fast and efficient.

Abstract:On the basis of brief introduction of TMS320C6701 DSP program boot-load methods,the theory of ROM boot-load methods,writing of the command file used by compiling and linking and the command file realizing the converting of the COFF file format to hex file recognized by DSP peripheral ROM memory are introduced especially.For the practical engineering use,aiming at realizing the Flash program boot-load of the TMS320C6701 DSP system,the read and write operation of the Flash memory are analyzed,and the whole DSP Flash boot-load program is written,resulting in successful implementation of the Flash boot-load method of TMS320C6701 DSP.The feasibility and validity of this boot-load method are proven.

Abstract:Taking the application development of actual project as the background,in this paper we put forward an effective method of loading and bootstrapping secondary bootloader of external parallel Flash which is based on DSP in TMS320VC55X.This system uses DSP of TMS320VC5509A of TI as the main processor,and uses NorFlash S29AL008D as the external large-capacity program memory,which can connect with DSP seamlessly.Furthermore,it completes on-line programming the external Flash using JTAG ports as well as achieves the successful operation of system boot loading without Emulator.The paper expounds the method of second bootloader,and puts the emphasis on introducing how to realise the use of multi-channel buffered serial ports(McBSP) of DSP,a relatively new,convenient and effective address bus expansion method,on hardware and software levels.

The DM642 integrates a number of peripherals to address the development of video and imaging applications. The development process and implementation methods of the multi-level bootloader for bulk Flash memory bootloading on DM642 Platform was introduced in detail,and a new way to develop top multimedia embedded system based on TMS320DM642 Digital Media Processor was given. It is proved that the way introduced here is practical and has a good prospect.

Abstract:Presently some feature phone and embedded OS aren’t virtual address, they can’t update modules or load new application dynamically, it needs re-compile and link all system software, this will limit the flexibility and extension of the system. If we can implement the dynamic load of the module and application, we will improve the system flexibility and extension. Abstract:This paper presents a new boot loader scheme for embedded devices with file system support built as a hardware module. The work focuses on improving the boot loader hardware and the possibility of carrying out a full boot-up process from the dedicated on-chip hardware, using a light file system to store an operating system kernel. To do so, the new full-hardware boot loader is integrated into two Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) System-on-Chip (SoC), capable of launching a Linux kernel from a formatted removable media.

Abstract:As the important component for the next generation of train communication networks,railway real-time Ethernet switch ensures the data exchange and transmission for status and control information.The boot-up of the switch,based on the embedded Linux system,includes BootLoader starting,kernel image loading,Linux kernel boot and user space initialization.The boot-up time directly affects the performance of switch or even the entire train communication networks.The boot-up process of the embedded Linux system and the mounting cost for various file systems,e.g.JFFS2 and UBIFS,were studied.The strategy for each process in boot-up was proposed to reduce the time cost.By reducing kernel,replacing file system and optimizing boot-up parameters,the performance of system boot-up was significantly improved.Experiments show that the boot-up time decreases from 26.69 seconds to 7.15 seconds,which is reduced by 73.2％oo.

Abstract:An SPI master interface with AMBA AXI 3.0 interface is designed for PKU-DSPII single chip,which supports four transfer modes,variable frame length,frequency programmable clock output and five interrupt types.Simultaneously,the bootrom program for the RISC DSP is also proposed,providing normal booting from external FLASH and system updating of the boot-loader codes in the external FLASH.Both the function simulation and FPGA prototyping show that PKU-DSPII can boot and conduct system updating through the external FLASH successfully,which provides good evidence for the correctness of the design of the SPI master interface and the bootrom program.The design has been implemented with CSMC 0.18μm CMOS technology for taping out.

Abstract:In the context of the High-Luminosity (HL) upgrade of the LHC, many custom ATCA electronics boards are being designed containing heterogeneous System-on-Chip (SoC) devices, more specifically the Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ (ZUS+) family. While the application varies greatly, these devices are regularly used for performing board management tasks, making them a fundamental element in the correct operation of the board. The large number of hundreds of SoC devices creates significant challenges in their firmware deployment, maintenance, and accessibility. Even though U-Boot on ZUS+ devices supports network boot through the Preboot Execution Environment (PXE), the standard ZUS+ boot process contains application-specific information at earlier boot steps, particularly within the First Stage Bootloader (FSBL). This prevents the initialization of several devices from a universal image. Inspired by the PXE boot process on desktop PCs, this paper describes split boot, a novel boot method tailored to the specific needs of the ZUS+. All application-specific configuration is moved to a network storage device and automatically fetched during the boot process. We considered the entire process, from firmware and software development to binary distribution in a large-scale system. The developed method nicely integrates with the standard Xilinx development toolset workflow.
