Abstract:Magnetic fluid seals are widely used technical applications of magnetic fluid. This paper presents a numerical simulation model to obtain the boundary of magnetic fluid in seals. The magnetic field in the seal is solved by finite element method, and the boundary is calculated by using Navier-Stokes equations in magnetic fluid. In order to observe the surface and obtain the seal capacity, the plane magnetic fluid seal experiment is carried out. The relationship between the seal capacity and the magnetic fluid volume is presented. The seal capacity which is obtained by the theoretical analysis has well congruence with the result of the experiment. The displacement of boundary with the pressure difference is quantitatively depicted.

Abstract:The authors put forward a new design of experimental setup in order to study the mechanism of magnetic fluid seal, and used Ansys to simulate the magnetic field distribution in the setup, the results prove its rationality. The experiment to study the way of pressure transmission has been done on the experimental setup. The experimental conclusion shows that pressure transmission is based on the recoverability of the magnetic fluid seal. When pressure exceeds the ability of the seal stage, there is a leak path in the magnetic fluid, and then the gas flows to the next stage, after that, the leak path disappears. Pressure transmits from one seal stage to the next one in this way.

Abstract:The seal of tank panoramic mirror is always difficult.In order to solve this problem,a magnetic fluid seal method is used in this paper and the tank panoramic mirror seal structure is designed also.The magnetic filed distribution and the resistance to pressure are analyzed theoretically.The experiment results indicate that the designed structure is correct and the seal performances are better in pressure,temperature,wet-hot and salt-fog tests.

Abstract:The magnetic fluid seal is one of the most successful applications of magnetic fluids. The theory of magnetic fluid seals in liquid environments has not been developed. This work mainly presents an experimental study of the influence of viscosity and magnetoviscous effects on the performance of a magnetic fluid seal in a water environment. Three engine oil–based magnetic fluids of different viscosities and similar saturation magnetization values were prepared and a multistage magnetic seal structure was designed. The magnetoviscous effect of the magnetic fluids under different working conditions was measured with an advanced rotational rheometer. An experimental platform and a multistage magnetic seal structure were designed for the critical pressure value and durability tests. The experimental results show that the viscosity of a magnetic fluid is a decisive factor in its sealing performance under a water environment and a discussion is presented that can explain the experimental results qualitatively.

Abstract:The fluid field at the interface of magnetic fluid and water was mathematically modeled,theoretically analyzed and experimentally evaluated with the lab-built,vertical-type test bench to explore the feasibility of magnetic fluid seal in liquid environment.The influence of the water pressure and shaft's rotation speed on the service lifetime of the magnetic fluid seal was investigated.The calculated results show that the water pressure has a major impact on the service lifetime of magnetic fluid seal.To be specific,as the water pressure increases,from 0.05 to 0.15 MPa,the service lifetime significantly decreases simply because the deformation and shearing stress at the interface of water and magnetic fluid considerably increase.The calculated and measured results were found to be in good agreement.

Abstract:Magnetic fluid is a new type of functional materials. The seal of reciprocating shaft is a typical application of the magnetic fluid. However, there is little research on the magnetic fluid reciprocating seals, thus improving the sealing life and seal capacity is the key problem of studying the reciprocating seals. This paper presents a structure of the seal to test the sealing life and other characteristics. The magnetic field of the seal is estimated using the finite-element method. The thickness of the magnetic fluid on the surface of reciprocating shaft and the flow rate of magnetic fluid are obtained theoretically. The experimental result shows that the static seal capacity is related to the fluid volume. The static seal capacity obtained by experiment is approximately equal to the value through the simulation with sufficient magnetic fluid. The relationship between sealing life and the motion of the reciprocating shaft is obtained experimentally. The sealing life decreases rapidly with the increase of the stroke and velocity.

Abstract:Because tank panoramic sight works in a harsh condition and its seal requires long life, high reliability, low friction and smooth operation, the seal of tank panoramic sight is a difficult problem. In order to solve this problem, the authors used magnetic fluid seal and designed the seal structure of tank panoramic sight. The authors theoretically calculated the magnetic filed distribution and the sustained pressure of the designed seal structure. The authors carried out the high-low temperature test, wet-hot test, saltfog test, and sustained pressure test for the designed structure. The experimental results indicated that the designed structure is correct and meet the practical requirement. The reliability of magnetic fluid seal of tank panoramic sight has been verified in practice.

Abstract:Magnetic fluids are the suspensions composed of magnetic nanoparticles,surfactants,and non-magnetic carrier liquids.Magnetic fluids are widely used in various fields,especially in sealing,because of their excellent features,including rapid magnetic response,flexible flow ability,tunable magneto-viscous effect,and reliable self-repairing capability.Here,we provide an in-depth,comprehensive insight into the theoretical analyses and diverse applications of magnetic fluids in sealing from three categories:static sealing,rotary sealing,and reciprocating sealing.We summarize the magnetic fluid sealing mechanisms and the development of magnetic fluid seals from 1960s to the present,particularly focusing on the recent progress of magnetic fluid seals.Although magnetic fluid sealing technology has been commercialized and industrialized,many difficulties still exist in its applications.At the end of the review,the present challenges and future prospects in the progress of magnetic fluid seals are also outlined.

Abstract:Magnetic fluid seals have the advantages of zero leakage, long life, simple structure and high reliability, and have become one of the most widely used applications of magnetic fluids. In this paper, the effect of magnetic fluid evaporation on the pressure resistance of magnetic fluid seals is studied. In terms of theory, through theoretical calculation and simulation analysis, a calculation method for the pressure resistance of magnetic fluid seals is established. In terms of experiments, firstly, five groups of control groups were set up to conduct evaporation experiments under the same conditions, and magnetic fluids with different evaporation rates were obtained; Secondly, the performance of magnetic fluids with different evaporation rates was tested, and the flow curves, viscosity-temperature curves, and magnetic-viscosity curves of magnetic fluids were obtained respectively, and the effect of evaporation on the performance of magnetic fluids was analyzed; Finally, magnetic fluid sealing experiments with different evaporation rates were carried out. It is found that evaporation increases the pressure resistance of static seal to a certain extent, which is of great significance.

Abstract:Magnetic fluid and magnetorheological fluid are two of the most effective magnetic media seals, yet the sealing effectiveness of both has not been compared systematically. To investigate the differences between magnetic fluid and magnetorheological fluid seals, a comparative experimental device is proposed to study the sealing mechanism and performance of the two sealing media at different temperatures. Numerical simulation is used to study the magnetic field distribution of the comparative experimental device and calculate the theoretical pressure resistance (PR) of the two sealing media, respectively. The correctness of the theoretical PR formula of the magnetic media seals with additional temperature coefficient is verified by the comparative experimental results. The results show that the number of resumptions of the magnetorheological fluid film decreases with increasing temperature, while the magnetic fluid film consistently undergoes only one recovery. In addition, the self-healing capability and PR of magnetorheological fluid seals are better than that of magnetic fluid seals, and it is less affected by temperature and has stronger temperature adaptability.

Abstract:Magnetic fluid is a typical type of functional fluid which can be magnetized and controlled by an external magnetic field. In magnetic fluid seals, magnetic fluid is attracted in sealing gaps by a magnetic field gradient to form non-contact sealing. Compared to traditional sealing methods, they possess unique advantages such as zero leakage, long lifetime, low friction torque, and high reliability. Although the design and performance estimation of magnetic fluid seals rely mostly on numerical simulation, a number of simplifications or even mistakes during the simulation process exist in previous studies. The error caused by simplifications and mistakes has not been studied, leading to a possible problem of simulation results in reliability and consistency with experimental data. Here, we examined the influence of common simplifications and mistakes in numerical simulation of the static pressure capability of magnetic fluid seals, including material properties, geometric modeling, and theoretical formulas. A novel method of structure optimization based on a derivative-free multiparameter algorithm is also presented. A test bench for magnetic fluid seals is established, and the difference between simulation and experimental results is discussed. This research provides a precise, efficient, and standard procedure for numerical simulation of magnetic fluid seals.

Abstract:The capacity of the magnetic fluid seal depends on the magnetic field and the saturation magnetization of the magnetic fluid. There are many factors that influence the magnetic field and the seal capacity of the magnetic fluid seal, such as the sealing gap, the shaft eccentricity, the shaft diameter, and the centrifugal force. In this paper, these factors are analyzed by numerical computations. When the material and structure are the same, the magnetic fluid seal capacity will reduce with the increasing of the sealing gap. When the shaft diameter is large the gravity should be considered. The centrifugal force has influence on the magnetic fluid seal capacity. (C) 2006 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Decoupled problem of the magnetic field and force was analyzed.The field problem was solved by boundary shape approximation of the magnetic fluid with iteration method.The seal capacity was computed and the difference between the decoupled computation and the linear computation was compared.It is indicated that the difference increases with the increase of the magnetization of the magnetic fluid.

Abstract:The magnetic field distributions in the sealing gap of the magnetic fluid sealing structure was modeled and simulated in finite element method with ANSYS code,based on the magnetic circuit design and the magnetic fluid theory.First,the magnetic circuit of the parallel structured magnetic fluid seal was designed.Next,the magnetic field distribution in the sealing gap of the magnetic fluid sealing structures was evaluated.Finally,the magnetic fluid sealing capacity was calculated.The simulated results show that the two factors account for the nonlinear relationship between the magnetic induction intensity differences at the sealing gaps under the two side pole-shoes and the middle pole-shoe;one factor is the magnetic leakages at the connections of the pole-shoe and permanent magnets,the other is the shorter axis of the middle pole-shoe.The two factors also explain why the magnetic fluid sealing capacity calculated by magnetic circuit technique is lower than that simulated in finite element method.In addition,the strong magnetic induction intensity at the sealing gap bellow the middle pole-shoe results in approximately equal magnetic induction intensity differences under the two side pole-shoes.

Abstract:The authors have designed the magnetic fluid sealing of dry Roots pump and have analyzed the magnetic field distribution of magnetic fluid sealing with finite element way. The authors tightly reasoned the anti-pressure formula of magnetic fluid sealing because the anti-pressure formula in most references is inaccurate or incorrect. The authors tested and verified the effect of magnetic fluid vacuum sealing in the plat form, anti-pressure ability and the influence of rotating speed on vacuum degree. The fact that the dry vacuum pump using magnetic fluid sealing has been working for almost ten years up to now indicates the sealing result of the dry Roots pump using magnetic fluid sealing is very good.

Abstract:Magnetic fluid has been widely used in sealing gas,but sealing liquids with magnetic fluid is still in the research stage.In this paper,the effect of velocity difference on failure pressure was theo-retically deduced.The magnetic fluid seal structure was designed and an experiment its rig was set up,and then the seal performances of sealing gas and liquids with magnetic fluid were studied.The results showed that the failure pressures of sealing liquids and gas statically under the same sealing gap were almost the same,and the failure pressure was generally not affected by the speed of the rotating shaft when sealing gas with Magnetic fluid.The failure pressure decreases significantly when the rotating shaft overspeeded the critical value, under the condition of Magnetic fluid as sealing liquids.
