Abstract:The authors put forward a new design of experimental setup in order to study the mechanism of magnetic fluid seal, and used Ansys to simulate the magnetic field distribution in the setup, the results prove its rationality. The experiment to study the way of pressure transmission has been done on the experimental setup. The experimental conclusion shows that pressure transmission is based on the recoverability of the magnetic fluid seal. When pressure exceeds the ability of the seal stage, there is a leak path in the magnetic fluid, and then the gas flows to the next stage, after that, the leak path disappears. Pressure transmits from one seal stage to the next one in this way.

Abstract:Magnetic fluids are the suspensions composed of magnetic nanoparticles,surfactants,and non-magnetic carrier liquids.Magnetic fluids are widely used in various fields,especially in sealing,because of their excellent features,including rapid magnetic response,flexible flow ability,tunable magneto-viscous effect,and reliable self-repairing capability.Here,we provide an in-depth,comprehensive insight into the theoretical analyses and diverse applications of magnetic fluids in sealing from three categories:static sealing,rotary sealing,and reciprocating sealing.We summarize the magnetic fluid sealing mechanisms and the development of magnetic fluid seals from 1960s to the present,particularly focusing on the recent progress of magnetic fluid seals.Although magnetic fluid sealing technology has been commercialized and industrialized,many difficulties still exist in its applications.At the end of the review,the present challenges and future prospects in the progress of magnetic fluid seals are also outlined.

Abstract:<span>Most magnetic fluid seals are multitooth structures for the high sealing capacity. However, the pressure transfer mechanism in the multitooth magnetic fluid seal is only carried out through experimental methods. In this article, a simulation method is presented to solve the two-phase flow of magnetic fluid and air in the sealing clearance. The boundary of the magnetic fluid is obtained by a volume of fluid method. In addition, a planar multitooth magnetic fluid seal is presented to observe the magnetic fluid barrier and obtain the pressure change during the pressure transfer process. The result shows that the fluid barrier ruptures when the pressure difference exceeds the sealing capacity. The pressure is transferred chamber by chamber in the multitooth magnetic fluid seal.</span>

Abstract:A new experimental setup was designed in order to study the loading process among stages of magnetic fluid seal. Magnetic field distributions under the pole pieces of the magnetic fluid seal with six stages were simulated by finite element method, and the results proved its rationality. A series of tests on experimental setup were run in order to study the way of pressure transmission among stages of magnetic fluid seal and to extend our knowledge on the mechanism of seal operation. The results of the experiments not only proved the correctness of the corollaries of previous researchers and more detailedly shows the way of pressure transmission in each stage. A mathematical model of the way of pressure transmission among stages of magnetic fluid sea was constructed by previous inference and the present experimental results, and it is able to express the specific way of pressure transmission at certain extent. The experimental conclusion also shows that the quantity of magnetic liquid in each stage will be redistributed and the quantity of magnetic liquid in each stage may be unevenly distributed when the pressure of the pressure chamber is imposed. It has a certain value of reference in the improvement of design and structure process of magnetic fluid seal in engineering problem.

Abstract:High viscous and non-Newtonian magnetic fluid sealing structure was analyzed by using the finite element software package ANSYS.The sealing pressure was calculated by the equation of actual pressure resistance.The results show that the seal capacity of the high viscous and non-Newtonian magnetic fluid sealing is better than that of the ordinary magnetic fluid sealing and the high viscous and non-Newtonian magnetic fluid sealing is applicable to the occasions of large axial-radial pulse volume and has wide range of applications because of the large gap between the magnetic pole and the shaft.

Abstract:Magnetic fluid seals are widely used technical applications of magnetic fluid. This paper presents a numerical simulation model to obtain the boundary of magnetic fluid in seals. The magnetic field in the seal is solved by finite element method, and the boundary is calculated by using Navier-Stokes equations in magnetic fluid. In order to observe the surface and obtain the seal capacity, the plane magnetic fluid seal experiment is carried out. The relationship between the seal capacity and the magnetic fluid volume is presented. The seal capacity which is obtained by the theoretical analysis has well congruence with the result of the experiment. The displacement of boundary with the pressure difference is quantitatively depicted.

Abstract:Magnetic fluid seals have the advantages of zero leakage, long life, simple structure and high reliability, and have become one of the most widely used applications of magnetic fluids. In this paper, the effect of magnetic fluid evaporation on the pressure resistance of magnetic fluid seals is studied. In terms of theory, through theoretical calculation and simulation analysis, a calculation method for the pressure resistance of magnetic fluid seals is established. In terms of experiments, firstly, five groups of control groups were set up to conduct evaporation experiments under the same conditions, and magnetic fluids with different evaporation rates were obtained; Secondly, the performance of magnetic fluids with different evaporation rates was tested, and the flow curves, viscosity-temperature curves, and magnetic-viscosity curves of magnetic fluids were obtained respectively, and the effect of evaporation on the performance of magnetic fluids was analyzed; Finally, magnetic fluid sealing experiments with different evaporation rates were carried out. It is found that evaporation increases the pressure resistance of static seal to a certain extent, which is of great significance.

Abstract:Magnetic seals as a class of non-contact sealing technology have been a research focus. In these seals, magnetic materials, usually ferrofluids or magnetorheological fluids are attracted in sealing gaps as sealing medium. Recently, a novel sealing method using nano-micron sized magnetic powders has been raised up as well. However, the working performance of these magnetic seals has not been studied thoroughly and comparatively yet. Here, we provide a comparative study of magnetic seals by ferrofluid, magnetorheological fluid and magnetic powder theoretically and experimentally. The formulas of pressure capability are derived based on their different properties. A modified empirical formula of magnetic powder seals is proposed, taking the frictional effect into consideration. The magnetic field distribution is calculated by the finite element method. Finally, a test bench for static magnetic seals is established. The pressure capability and leakage rate of three materials are measured by sealing experiments. The differences in mechanism of pressure transfer and the ability of self-recovery are discussed. This research summarizes the characteristics of different magnetic seals, and provides a guidance for sealing medium selection and structure design.

Abstract:Magnetic fluid (MF) seals have typically been used under various vacuum and gaseous low-pressure conditions. However, there are only a few cases in which MF seals can be used in a liquid environment. To promote this concept, a series of experimental tests was run in order to study the loading process among MF seals, as well as their self-repairing performance in aqueous environments. Exploring these factors has extended our knowledge of the sealing mechanisms in liquid environments. The results show that MF seals have enhanced self-repairing abilities in aqueous environments.

Abstract:The magnetic fluid seal is one of the most successful applications of magnetic fluids. The theory of magnetic fluid seals in liquid environments has not been developed. This work mainly presents an experimental study of the influence of viscosity and magnetoviscous effects on the performance of a magnetic fluid seal in a water environment. Three engine oil–based magnetic fluids of different viscosities and similar saturation magnetization values were prepared and a multistage magnetic seal structure was designed. The magnetoviscous effect of the magnetic fluids under different working conditions was measured with an advanced rotational rheometer. An experimental platform and a multistage magnetic seal structure were designed for the critical pressure value and durability tests. The experimental results show that the viscosity of a magnetic fluid is a decisive factor in its sealing performance under a water environment and a discussion is presented that can explain the experimental results qualitatively.

Abstract:The fluid field at the interface of magnetic fluid and water was mathematically modeled,theoretically analyzed and experimentally evaluated with the lab-built,vertical-type test bench to explore the feasibility of magnetic fluid seal in liquid environment.The influence of the water pressure and shaft's rotation speed on the service lifetime of the magnetic fluid seal was investigated.The calculated results show that the water pressure has a major impact on the service lifetime of magnetic fluid seal.To be specific,as the water pressure increases,from 0.05 to 0.15 MPa,the service lifetime significantly decreases simply because the deformation and shearing stress at the interface of water and magnetic fluid considerably increase.The calculated and measured results were found to be in good agreement.

Abstract:Magnetic fluid, a new type of magnetic material, is a colloidal liquid constituted of nano-scale ferromagnetic particles suspended in carrier fluid. Magnetic fluid sealing is one of the most successful applications of magnetic fluid. As a new type of seal offering the advantages of no leakage, long life and high reliability, the magnetic fluid seal has been widely utilized under vacuum-and low-pressure-differential conditions. In practical applications, for improved pressure capacity, a multistage sealing structure is always used. However, in engineering applications, a uniform distribution of magnetic fluid under each tooth often cannot be achieved, which problem weakens the overall pressure capacity of the seals. In order to improve the pressure capacity of magnetic fluid seals and broaden their applications, the present study theoretically and experimentally analyzed the degree of non-uniform distribution of multistage magnetic fluid seals. A mathematical model reflecting the relationship between the pressure capacity and the distribution of magnetic fluid under a single tooth was constructed, and a formula showing the relationship between the volume of magnetic fluid and its contact width with the shaft was derived. Furthermore, the relationship of magnetic fluid volume to capacity was analyzed. Thereby, the causes of non-uniform distribution could be verified: injection of magnetic fluid; the assembly of magnetic fluid seals; the change of magnetic fluid silhouette under pressure loading; the magnetic fluid sealing mechanism of pressure transmission, and seal failure. In consideration of these causes, methods to improve the pressure capacity of magnetic fluid seals was devised (and is herein proposed).

Abstract:Magnetic fluid seal (MFS) has been widely applied in the vacuum environment, but its pressure transfer mechanism has been less studied. This paper investigates the pressure transfer mechanism of MFS in the vacuum environment by designing an experimental device of MFS mechanism, which can observe the change of liquid film during the pressure transfer. Meanwhile, the pressure transfer mechanism of the designed device in the vacuum environment is compared with the that of MFS in the gas environment. The self-repairing performance of MFS in both vacuum and gas environments is investigated. Based on the MFS theory, the magnetic field distribution of the experimental device is analyzed numerically, and the theoretical pressure resistance is calculated and compared with the experimental value. The results show that the pressure transfer mechanism of MFS in the vacuum environment is similar to that in the gas environment with different forms. The pressure transfer form in the vacuum environment is magnetic fluid liquid film to produce a leakage channel. It is concluded that the self-repairing performance of MFS in the vacuum environment is better than that in the gas environment.

Abstract:Magnetic fluid seals are a new type of seal with zero leakage. Based on the requirements of the working conditions, a magnetic fluid seal device applicable to rotating shafts was designed in this study using magnetic field simulation analysis and experimental verification. The relationships between several structural variables and seal pressure were analyzed, and the fitting curve and equation were derived via fitting analysis. The magnetic field simulation results showed that sealing pressure decreased with an increase in the sealing gap, increased with the number of pole teeth, and increased and then decreased with an increase in the pole teeth angle. The trapezoidal pole teeth exhibited the best sealing performance. The experimental results showed that the best sealing performance was achieved when the amount of magnetic fluid was 3mL . The sealing pressure significantly decreased with an increase in the rotational speed.

Analysis of Split Magnetic Fluid Plane Sealing Performance

Abstract:Split magnetic fluid sealing is a combination of magnetic fluid rotary and plane sealing. Using the theory of equivalent magnetic circuit design as basis, the author theorized the pressure resistance performance of magnetic fluid plane sealing. To determine the pressure resistance of magnetic fluid plane sealing, the author adopted the method of finite element analysis to calculate the magnetic field intensity in the gap between plane sealing structures. The author also analyzed the effect of different sealing gaps, as well as different ratios between the sealing gap and tooth and solt width, on the sealing performance of split magnetic fluid. Results showed that the wider the sealing gap, the lower the sealing performance. Tooth width strongly affects sealing performance; the sealing performance is best when the ratio between tooth width and sealing gap is 2, whereas the sealing performance is poor when the ratio is over 8. The sealing performance is best when the ratio between the solt width and sealing gap is 4, indicating a slight effect on sealing performance when the ratio between the solt width and sealing gap is higher. Theoretical analysis and simulation results provide reference for the performance evaluation of different sealing equipment and estimation of critical pressure at interface failure.

Abstract:The seal of tank panoramic mirror is always difficult.In order to solve this problem,a magnetic fluid seal method is used in this paper and the tank panoramic mirror seal structure is designed also.The magnetic filed distribution and the resistance to pressure are analyzed theoretically.The experiment results indicate that the designed structure is correct and the seal performances are better in pressure,temperature,wet-hot and salt-fog tests.

Abstract:The Magnetic fluid is a new type of magnetic material. It is a colloidal liquid made of nanoscale ferromagnetic particles suspended in a carrier fluid. Magnetic fluid sealing is one of the most successful applications of the magnetic fluid. As a new type of seal with the advantages of no leakage, long life and high reliability, magnetic fluid seal has been widely used under vacuum and low pressure differential condition. Two types of permanent magnets, the annular permanent magnets and the cylindrical magnets, are usually used in magnetic fluid seals in engineering. However, the influence of permanent magnet structure on sealing capacity was not clear, hence a new experimental setup was designed in order to study the influence of permanent magnet structure on sealing capacity. The annular permanent magnets and the cylindrical magnets were used as the magnetic source of the experimental setup in a series of tests respectively. The relationship between the sealing capacity of magnetic fluid seal and the end-face area, axial length of the magnet was analyzed by the electromagnetism theories and theoretical derivation. The result of the experiments shows that the sealing capability grows with the end-face area of the magnet, and the growth rate becomes much slower when magnet end-face area attains a certain value; the reluctance of pole pieces and shaft can't be ignored when magnetic field attains a certain value; the modified theoretical formula had a good match to the measured values when the end-face area of the magnet is small enough to ignore the reluctance of pole pieces and shaft.
