Abstract:Theory of TEHD(Thermal Elastohydro-dynamic Lubricaton) for oil-film bearing in rolling mill is discussed.The feasibility of making standard on oil-film bearing in rolling mill is analyzed.The effect of configuration of oil-film bearing on the performance of bearing has been studied.The rules for designing oil-film bearing in rolling mill are developed.The significance of inspection and control of oil-film bearing is also discussed.The results provide the significant reference for the development of the lubrication optimization engineering and design of full life period of oil-film bearings in rolling mill.

Abstract:In the present work, a comparison between traditional oil‐in‐water (O/W) based lubricant and nano‐TiO2 additive water‐based lubricants was made to explore the lubrication effects during rolling of ferritic stainless steel (FSS) strips. The results show that marked reduction in rolling force and improvement in the surface quality can be achieved by utilisation of water‐based nanolubricant, which can be attributed to the synergism of rolling effect, mending effect, polishing effect and protection film. An optimal concentration of 3.0 wt% TiO2 nanoparticles is found to exhibit excellent lubrication effects with sufficient nanoparticles at real contact regions without aggregation, leading to 10% reduction in the surface roughness during rolling of FSS strips.

Abstract:Lubricant is vital to improve energy efficiency and workpiece durability for the moving counterpart. High-temperature lubricants are important for the hot rolling process to reduce the rolling force and protect the roller and the strips. The current paper concerns eco-friendly sodium metasilicate as a high-temperature lubricant. A hot rolling mill is employed to evaluate the lubrication effect of sodium metasilicate. The influence of crucial factors of concentration of lubricant and descaling is discussed; the rolled surface was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and 3D profilometer. The results depict that the sodium metasilicate can reduce the rolling force by about 7.8% when the concentration of sodium metasilicate is 18% and above, and descaling of the hot stripe makes the lubrication effect more effective, which can reach a 12.7% reduction in the rolling force. This lubrication is attributed to the formed melts of the sodium silicate layer that offers an easy shearing interface. For the un-descaled samples, the lubricant will be compacted and mixed with the oxide scale, and weakens the lubrication effect. This work suggests that sodium metasilicate can be a high-temperature lubricant for hot rolling; descaling is vital, not only for the quality of the product but also for the efficiency of the lubricant. This work will also be useful for the concentration selection of glass lubricant.

Abstract:In this article, an innovative study regarding the effects of different rolling and nanolubrication conditions on rolling force and contact friction during hot rolling of a low‐carbon microalloyed steel using the Taguchi method is reported. Herein, a novel coefficient of friction model and a modified lubricant film thickness model for hot steel rolling under water‐based nanolubrication are developed. Water‐based nanolubricants are playing increasingly important roles in hot steel rolling over the past decade regarding environmental protection, energy saving, and product quality improvement. The contact friction between the work roll and the workpiece under water‐based nanolubrication, however, has been scarcely investigated. In this study, water‐based lubricants containing 0–4.0 wt% TiO2 nanoparticles are employed in hot rolling of a mild steel under different rolling conditions. The Taguchi method is used for the orthogonal design of the hot‐rolling tests to sequence the key factors that affect the rolling force in terms of importance. The as‐synthesized water‐based nanolubricants indicate excellent dispersion stability after standing for 24 h, which can be readily restored to the original state via manual shaking. The coefficient of friction (COF) during the steady‐state hot steel rolling is inversely calculated using a flow stress model developed from hot compression testing. A novel COF model for hot rolling of the steel is thus proposed through multiple linear regression. It is found that the result of linear regression agreed well with that of inverse calculation, indicating that the proposed COF model is applicable. Finally, the lubrication mechanism is examined through a boundary lubrication regime determined from a modified lubricant film thickness model.

Abstract:Water-based nanolubricants with different concentrations of TiO 2 nanoparticles were prepared and the wettability and viscosity were evaluated. The results show that the addition of TiO 2 nanoparticles improves the lubrication performance during microrolling of ultrathin stainless steel foils. In addition, the viscosity decreases dramatically with the increase in the concentration of nanoparticles, which was related to the change of dispersing agent concentration. Microrolling tests were performed to explore the lubrication conditions during microrolling of ultrathin stainless-steel strips, and the results showed that the refined surface quality of the rolled strips was achieved with 3.0 wt% TiO 2 . The improvement in surface quality can be attributed to the synergism of the rolling effect, polishing effect, protection film, and mending effect of TiO 2 nanoparticles.

Abstract:Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) of the microtexture in the tertiary oxide scale after hot rolling were investigated. The surface asperity flattening and grain refinement of Fe3O4 were produced at a thickness reduction of 28% and a cooling rate of 28°C/s. Microtexture development of Fe3O4 manifests as a strong θ fibre parallel to oxide growth, including the {100}<001> and {001}<110> textured components, whereas the {0001}<101̅0> component dominates in α-Fe2O3 as the favoured basal slip. The tribological effect of α-Fe2O3 at the contact surface of steel and rolls was considered at low and high thickness reductions. The propagation of cracks along the Fe3O4 grain boundaries could create a dish to collect nanoparticles during lubrication and thereby changed the wear rates.

Abstract:The water-based MoS2 nano-lubricant was prepared and tentatively applied in cold rolling lubricant recirculation systems to investigate its recycling prospect and sustainable lubrication mechanism. The tribological properties and rolling lubrication performance of recycled nano-lubricants with different cycle stages were preliminarily evaluated using four-ball tribotester and two-high rolling mills. To determine the phase transformation of MoS2 in recycled nano-lubricants, the already used MoS2 nano-lubricant was collected, dried and then analyzed by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD). Molecular dynamics simulation was conducted to analyze the specialized lubrication mechanism of reused MoS2 nano-lubricant. The results revealed that the MoS2 was considered to gradually transform into MoO3 during cold rolling process. Those oxidizing metamorphic MoS2 nano-lubricants still had excellent friction reducing and wear resistance. That indicated MoS2 nano-lubricant could be recycled in cold rolling process. The recirculation of MoS2 nano-lubricant reduced the use of lubricants, the discharge of waste liquid and the production cost. Not only the pollution to environment was relieved, but also resources and costs were saved. The calculation results of adsorption energy between nanoparticles and steel surface further demonstrated the absorbing type of lubricating film in different cycle stages. A lubrication model suitable for MoS2 nano-lubricants under steel strip cold rolling lubrication circulation condition was established to explain their sustainable lubrication mechanism.

Abstract:Rolling oil sludge (ROS) is a type of solid waste produced during steel rolling; this waste contains not only a high iron content but also many harmful organic components and is a very attractive secondary resource. This paper introduces the sources and hazards of ROS, summarizes the recycling methods integrated with steel production, classifies traditional treatment technologies, and analyzes their advantages and disadvantages. Combined treatment is the main direction of ROS treatment methods in the future. The ROS recycling techniques applied in different industries are summarized. Finally, existing problems and future work are described to promote the remediation and resource utilization of ROS.

Abstract:Using pure water in comparison to water-based lubricant containing 4% TiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs), the hot rolling tests of 304 stainless steel were carried out at a rolling temperature of 1050 °C under varying rolling reductions and speeds. The effects of lubrication on rolling force, torque, power and contact friction were systematically investigated. The coefficient of friction (COF) during steady-state hot steel rolling was inversely calculated using a developed flow stress model. The COF models including the effects of rolling reduction and speed were proposed via multiple linear regression. The results indicated that the use of the nanolubricant enabled a reduction of rolling force up to 6.1% and decreases in rolling torque and power up to 21.6%, compared to that of water condition. The results obtained from the linear regression agreed well with those from the inverse calculation, suggesting the developed COF models had high accuracy. The lubrication mechanisms were derived from a boundary lubrication regime, owing to ball bearing and mending effects of TiO 2 NPs, and formation of thin lubricant film under high rolling pressure.

Abstract:Friction is one of the most significant physical phenomena influencing metal forming. The deformation or fracture of oxide scale significantly affects the roll–strip interface behaviour. Sticking occurs frequently during hot rolling of stainless steels especially ferritic stainless steels, which causes surface defects of both steel products and rolls. It is important to characterize the features of the oxide scale in hot rolling of stainless steel strips, but few studies have been carried out. This paper focuses on the deformation of oxide scale and roll–strip interface characteristics in hot rolling of austenitic stainless steel 304L and ferritic stainless steel 430. Oxidation tests in a short time in humid air with water vapour content of 7.0vol.% were carried out using Gleeble 3500 thermo-mechanical simulator, and the oxidation characteristics of 304L and 430 steels were obtained. The deformation, surface morphology of oxide scale of the steels, and the friction in hot rolling were studied in hot rolling tests. Thick oxide scale of 304L steel shows high lubricative effect while the breaking of thin oxide scales of 430 steel may make the steel substrate to contact with the roll, which counteracts the lubricative effect of the oxide scale and results in friction coefficient increasing with an increase of reduction. A FEM simulation has been developed to analyse the deformation behaviour of oxide scale and surface roughness transfer during hot rolling of stainless steels and the model describing the rough surface profiles of the scales and steel has been integrated into the simulation.

Abstract:In order to reduce the band structure of J55 oil casting steel and improve the comprehensive properties of the finished products,J55 strips were rolled by different process combination ways.The band structure grades of samples were detected.The influences of rolling techniology on the band structure were analyzed.The results show that the band structure is reduced when the strip is rolling at(870±20)℃,with big compression value in austenite non-crystallization zone and cooling rapidly after finishing rolling.

Abstract:High-speed steel (HSS) materials are universally used as work rolls for the hot rolling of stainless steels. Their use has increased the output of the rolling mill and decreased roll material consumption and grinding. Sticking defects often occur, however, during the hot rolling process. In this article, extreme pressure (EP) additives were dropped on the HSS samples at high temperature. Zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP) was chosen as the most effective EP additive by scratch tests on the HSS samples. In order to determine the optimum proportion of ZDDP in the lubricant, two reduction rates were tested on a Hille 100 experimental rolling mill by hot rolling ferritic stainless steel 445J1M at five different concentrations of ZDDP. The mechanism of EP additive action during the hot rolling process was also investigated. By analyzing the deformation behavior of the oxide scale of samples after hot rolling using different proportions of ZDDP, it was found that 20% ZDDP in the lubricant is the preferred concentration for industrial application.

Abstract:The oxidation kinetics of ferritic stainless steel 430 was studied in dry and humid air at 1090°C by Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA). Different atmospheres and heating times were adopted for reheating to obtain different compositions and thickness of the oxide scale. Hot rolling was performed on a 2-high Hille 100 experimental rolling mill at various reductions. Oxide scale thickness and composition were analysed with optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The surface profiles were examined by a digital microscope, and the topographic features of the thin oxide scale surface were examined with an atomic force microscope (AFM) before and after rolling. The oxide scale surface and steel/oxide interface roughness were measured after rolling. Inverse calculation of the coefficient of friction was employed to analyse and the effect of oxide scale on friction in hot rolling. The coefficient of friction depends not only on the thickness of the oxide scale, but also on its composition and surface topography before hot rolling.
