Abstract:In order to theoretically study the growth morphology of dihydroxylammonium 5,5′-bistetrazole-1,1′-diolate (TKX-50) crystal in different solvent systems, crystal–solvent models were established, and then molecular dynamics (MD) methods were adopted as a means to simulate particle motion. Modified attachment energy (MAE) model was employed to calculate the growth morphology of TKX-50. The simulation results demonstrate that COMPASS force field and RESP charge are suitable for molecular dynamics simulation of TKX-50. The morphologically dominant growth surfaces of TKX-50 in vacuum are (0 2 0), (0 1 1), (1 1 –1), (1 0 0) and (1 2 0), respectively. In water (H2O) and N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solvents, the (1 1 –1) face is the largest in the habit face, the growth rate of (0 2 0) face becomes faster. With the increase of temperature, the aspect ratios of TKX-50 crystal in DMF solvent increase, and the areas of the (1 2 0) faces decrease. In ethylene glycol /H2O mixed solvent system with volume ratio of 1/1, aspect ratio of TKX-50 is relatively small. In formic acid /H2O mixed solvents with different volume ratios (1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 1/1 and 2/1), aspect ratio of TKX-50 is relatively small when volume ratio is 1/2.

Abstract:Dihydroxylammonium 5,5'-bistetrazole-1,1'-diolate (TKX-50) is a kind of promising energetic ionic salt which shows excellent properties including higher detonation velocity and lower mechanical sensitivities. In order to explain the influence of solvent on the morphology of TKX-50 crystal, the two-dimensional nucleation theory was used to modify the attachment energy (AE), molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was employed to investigate the interaction of TKX-50 and solvents. The results demonstrated that the morphologically dominant growth surfaces of TKX-50 in vacuum are (0 2 0), (1 0 0), (01 1), (1 1 0), (1 1 -1) and (1 2 -1), respectively. It had intramolecular and intermolecular hydrogen bonds with different strength in the TKX-50 crystal. The effect of solvent on the crystal plane was further explained through the analysis of radial distribution function (RDF) and mean square displacement (MSD). The morphologies of TKX-50 in solvents with different polarity were predicted, and an empirical correlation formula was fitted by comparing the aspect ratios (R) of the crystals, solvent polarity (P) and the root mean square values (I) of the solvent molecular diffusion coefficient. Results of comparing the TKX-50 crystal aspect ratios in different solvents indicated that the Ethylene Glycol (EG) solvent is more favorable for the spheroidization of TKX-50 in this study.

Abstract:Dihydroxylammonium 5,5′-bistetrazole-1,1′-diolate (TKX-50) is a newly synthesized explosive with excellent comprehensive properties: high energy storage, low impact sensitivity, and low toxicity. To understand and improve the crystal morphology of TKX-50, we reported the polymer consistent force field to simulate the crystal morphology of TKX-50 by growth morphology (GM) method. We then used this force field in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to predict the influences of additives on crystal facets of TKX-50. The calculated results indicate that ethanol, ethylene glycol, and acetic acid are more favorable to the spheroidization of TKX-50, which provides a theoretical support for the additive selection of crystalline system. Furthermore, we added the selected additives in the recrystallization system of TKX-50. The recrystallized samples possessed a small aspect ratio and were close to spherical in shape, which indicates that the experimental results are consistent with the simulated results.
Growth morphology of CL-20/HMX cocrystal explosive: insights from solvent behavior under different temperatures

Abstract:A 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) /1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazacyclooctane (HMX)-isopropanol (IPA) interfacial model was constructed to investigate the effect of temperature on cocrystal morphology. A constant volume and temperature molecular dynamics (NVT-MD) simulation was performed on the interfacial model at various temperatures (295–355 K, 20 K intervals). The surface electrostatic potential (ESP) of the CL-20/HMX cocrystal structure and IPA molecule were studied by the B3LYP method at 6–311++G (d, p) level. The surface energies, polarities, adsorption energy, mass density distribution, radial distribution function (RDF), mean square displacement (MSD) and relative changes of attachment energy were analyzed. The results show that polarities of (1 0 0) and (0 1 1) cocrystal surfaces may be more negative and affected by IPA solvent. The adsorption energy per area indicates that growth of the (1 0–2) face in IPA conditions may be more limited, while the (1 0 0) face tends to grow more freely. MSD and diffusion coefficient (D) analyses demonstrated that IPA molecules gather more easily on the cocrystal surface at lower temperatures, and hence have a larger effect on the growth of cocrystal faces. RDF analysis shows that, with the increasing of temperature, the strength of hydrogen bond interactions between cocrystal and solvent becomes stronger, being highest at 335 K for the (1 0 0) and (0 1 1) interfacial models. Results of relative changes of modified attachment energy show that (1 0 0) and (0 1 1) faces tends to be larger than other faces. Abstract:The microstructure evolution of Ti-55531 alloy with (beta+global alpha) microstructure composition under heating condition of 1 K/min was observed by thermal expansion and SEM, and it was found that the microstructure evolution was alpha lamellae precipitating, dissolution and alpha globes dissolution. The kinetics equations of the growth/dissolution of the lamellar precipitate and spherical precipitate were established. The simulation results show that the growth and dissolution of lamellar alpha is affected by the Gibbs-Thomson effect, which reduces the stability of alpha lamella tips, thus resulting in the dissolution of alpha lamella tips below the equilibrium temperature. The elongation of the alpha lamella tips follows the kinetics controlled by the mixed mechanism of bulk diffusion and interfacial diffusion, while the lateral thickening is controlled by bulk diffusion, and the bulk diffusion controls the dissolution of alpha lamella. The global alpha growth at low temperature is controlled by the volume diffusion of stable elements with a lower diffusion rate, and the solubility at high temperature is controlled by the volume diffusion of Al with a higher diffusion rate.

Abstract:For explaining in detail the influence of solvents on the morphology of 5,5 '-bistetrazole-1,1 '-diolate (BTO) crystal, molecular dynamics (MD) methods were used to simulate solution-crystal interface interactions, modified attachment energy (AE) model and occupancy model were used to predict the morphology of BTO. The simulation results demonstrated that the morphologically dominant growth surfaces of BTO in vacuum are (001), (110), (20-1) and (200), respectively. There has many intramolecular and intermolecular interactions exist with different strength in the crystal of BTO, and the atomic system is dominated by N center dot center dot center dot H/H center dot center dot center dot N contacts which are comprising 60.2%. Analysis of the crystal bond chain and crystal packing further explained the mechanism of crystal surface growth. The size of the BTO crystal face-solvent model and the number of solvent molecules was designed. The morphologies of BTO in different solvents with three models were displayed. Results of comparing the BTO crystal relative surface/volume ratio in different solvents indicated that the Diethyl Ether (DEE) solvent is more favorable for the spheroidization of BTO crystal in the study.

Abstract:Based on the effect of different solvents on the growth rate of crystal surfaces, the binary and ternary systems exhibited the advantage of controlling the morphology of the crystals by adjusting the solvent ratio. Inspired by this idea, the crystal morphologies of beta-HMX in the binary systems (propylene carbonate-water, acetone-water, dimethyl sulfoxide-water) and ternary systems (propylene carbonate-acetone-water, propylene carbonate-dimethyl sulfoxide-water) are predicted based on the modified attachment energy (MAE) model. The morpho-logical simulation results of beta-HMX were in good agreement with the microscopic morphologies obtained by SEM. The sigma-profile peaks of HMX are distributed in the HB-donor and the nonpolar regions, and indicates HMX can provide hydrogen bonding. The radial distribution function (RDF) analysis shows that solvent molecule adsorption on beta-HMX molecules is via solvent-crystal face interactions of van der Waals interaction, hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction.
Experimental study and thermodynamic modeling of a novel heat-resistant explosive in different mono solvents

Abstract:In this paper, the solubility of 5,5′-bis(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl)-2,2′-bis(1,3,4-oxadiazole) (TKX-55) was first determined by a dynamic laser monitoring at T = (293.15, 298.15, 303.15, 308.15, 313.15, 318.15, 323.15, 328.15 and 333.15) K in fourteen pure solvents, including nitrobenzene (NB), methylethylketone (MEK), dimethyl carbonate (DMC), N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), methoxybenzene (MOB), ethenyl acetate (VAC), 1,2-propanediol (PDO), cyclohexanone (CYC), epichlorohydrin (ECH), 1-butanol (NBA), n-butyl acrylate (BA), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), tributyl phosphate (TBP) and 2-butanol (IBA), under atmospheric pressure (P = 0.1 MPa). Besides, supersolubility as well as the metastable zone width of TKX-55 in PDO, BA, DMSO and IBA was determined by the dynamic laser monitoring method. The experimental results showed that the solubility of TKX-55 in fourteen pure solvents increases with increasing temperature and the metastable zone width decreases with increasing temperature. The metastable zone width is approximately 2.49 K–43.26 K. In addition, in order to improve the applicability of the solubility, the modified Apelblat equation, λh equation, the polynomial empirical equation, van't Hoff equation and NRTL equation were used to correlate the solubility data of TKX-55, and the results showed that all models can give a satisfactory correlation. The average root-mean-square deviation (102RMSD) values were 1.71, 8.91, 2.33, 6.12 and 3.30, respectively. Moreover, Hansen solubility parameter was used for explaining the solubility order of TKX-55 in selected solvents, the consequences showed that solubility order of TKX-55 resulted from the comprehensive function of several solubility parameters. The solubility parameter of Δδt between TKX-55 and solvents reached from 1.27 MPa0.5 to 15.28 MPa0.5. Furthermore, three kinds of thermodynamic properties of the mixing enthalpy (ΔmixH), the mixing entropy (ΔmixS) and the mixing Gibbs energy (ΔmixG) of TKX-55 in selected solvents were calculated by NRTL equation and the results turned out that the dissolution process was spontaneous. Besides, thermal properties of TKX-55 were measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results showed that the melting temperature and the fusion enthalpy were 640.65 K and 19.60 kJ·mol−1, respectively. Finally, solubility values and thermodynamic relations of TKX-55 in fourteen pure solvents would be invoked as fundamental data and models regarding the purification process.

Unified Modeling of Work Hardening and Flow Softening in Two-Phase Titanium Alloys Considering Microstructure Evolution in Thermomechanical Processes

Abstract:One of the most critical aspects in understanding the deformation behavior of two-phase titanium alloys subjected to thermomechanical processes (TMPs) lies in being able to describe the flow stress accurately. To this end, in this study, initially, hot tension tests were conducted on a two-phase Ti-6Al-2Zr-1Mo-1V alloy. It was observed that the flow stress at a given temperature and strain rate exhibits work hardening, followed by flow softening. Flow softening occurs at the peak strain, where the maximum stress is observed; peak strain decreases with increasing temperature and decreasing strain rate. Variations in peak strain are more obvious at low temperatures and high strain rates. Later, the microstructure of the alloy was analyzed and the results show that work hardening and flow softening are caused by dynamic recrystallization (DRX). The DRX volume fraction was found to exhibit an increasing trend and discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) was observed at increasing temperature and decreasing strain rate. With respect to microstructure evolution, a unified model consisting of a thermally activated stress component and an athermal stress component was developed. In the athermal stress term, dislocation density and the Hall-Petch effect were used to describe the work-hardening and flow-softening behavior. In the case of the dislocation term, the DRX effects were modeled considering the critical strain for DRX initiation and the DRX rate, which are both temperature-and strain rate-dependent. In the Hall-Petch effect term, the dependence of the Hall-Petch coefficient on the processing conditions was considered and the loss of Hall-Petch strengthening with deformation was modeled. Using the proposed model, the work-hardening and flow-softening behavior and microstructure evolution in Ti-6Al-2Zr-1Mo-1V alloys subjected to TMP were predicted. A good agreement could be observed between the experimental and predicted results. This study provides a solution for modeling work-hardening and flow-softening behavior and helps us understand the deformation behavior of two-phase titanium alloys subjected to TMP.
A molecular dynamics simulation of solvent effects on the crystal morphology of HMX.

Abstract:The solvent has a large effect on the crystal morphology of the organic explosive compound octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX, C4H8N8O8). The attachment energy calculations predict a growth morphology in vacuum dominated by (020), (011), (102¯), (111¯) and (100) crystal forms. Molecular dynamics simulations are performed for these crystal faces of HMX in contact with acetone solvent. A corrected attachment energy model, accounting for the surface chemistry and the associated topography (step structure) of the habit crystal plane, is applied to predict the morphological importance of a crystal surface in solvent. From the solvent-effected attachment energy calculations it follows that the (100) face becomes morphologically more important compared with that in vacuum, while the (020) and (102¯) are not visible at all. This agrees well with the observed experimental HMX morphology grown from the acetone solution.
Measurement, correlation of solubility and thermodynamic properties analysis of 5,5′-bis(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl)-2,2′-bis(1,3,4-oxadiazole) in different mono solvents

Abstract:In this paper, the solubility of 5,5′-bis(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl)-2,2′-bis(1,3,4-oxadiazole) (TKX-55) in methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, 2-propanol, formic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, acetonitrile, ethyl acetate, tetrahydrofuran, nitromethane, 1,2-dichloroethane, benzene and 1,4-dioxane was determined at T = (293.15–333.15) K under atmospheric pressure (P = 0.1 MPa) by a gravimetric method. The results showed that the solubility increases with rise of temperature in all selected solvents. Additionally, the solvent effect on TKX-55 solubility was investigated with Kamlet-Taft parameters. Moreover, Hansen solubility parameter was used for explaining the solubility order of TKX-55 in selected solvents, the consequences showed that solubility order of TKX-55 resulted from the comprehensive function of several solubility parameters. The solubility parameter of Δδ t between TKX-55 and solvents reached from 0.17 MPa0.5 to 8.68 MPa0.5. The interaction energy (E inter) between TKX-55 and selected solvents was calculated by molecular simulation to explain the solubility behavior. Activity coefficient was to access the solute-solvent molecular interactions. Besides, the solubility values were correlated by the modified Apelblat equation, λh equation, the polynomial empirical equation, and ideal equation, and the results showed that all models can give a satisfactory correlation. The average root-mean-square deviation (106RMSD) values were 14.57, 33.08, 8.523 and 30.29, respectively. On the basis of the van’t Hoff and Gibbs equations, the thermodynamic properties exhibited by TKX-55 (i.e., standard dissolution enthalpy (Δ disHo ), standard dissolution entropy (Δ disSo ) and standard dissolution Gibbs free energy (Δ disGo )) in the selected solvents were characterized and then discussed from the experiment data. As revealed from the result, TKX-55 in solvents selected showed a non-spontaneous process. The excess enthalpy of solution was estimated on the basis of λh equation. And solid-liquid surface tension (γ) and surface entropy factor (f) of TKX-55 were estimated by using the experimental solubility data. Furthermore, the experimental solubility values, model parameters, and thermodynamic properties of TKX-55 in different pure solvents will provide the necessary support for its preparation, crystallization process, and further theoretical studies.

Abstract:Based on the existing improved phase-field model for polymer crystallization, the spherulitic morphologies are numerically simulated. The model consists of a second-order phase field equation and a two-dimensional heat conduction equation for coupled flow field. Our strategy is to use the finite difference method (FDM) for discretization of the phase field equation, finite volume method (FVM) for solving the energy equation, and lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) for simulation of melt flow, respectively. The shape level set function(LS) is adopted to represent the crystal interface at each moment with certain boundary conditions imposed on the solution region. In simple and complex cavities, the growth of single and multiple spherulites is simulated with different temperature boundary conditions and different flow fields, respectively. The numerical results illustrate that the growth morphologies of the crystals vary with the temperature boundaries. When the boundary temperature is greater than or near melting point Tm, the growth of crystals at the boundary is inhibited. When the boundary temperature is lower, the crystals at the boundary grow more tightly, and eventually forming a crystal wall. The lower the boundary temperature, the thicker the crystal wall is. In addition, the flow velocity has an important influence on the crystal morphologies, and the crystal grows fast towards the upstream direction. However, with the increase of crystallization time, the phenomenon of asymmetric growth becomes not obvious.
Reactive molecular dynamics simulations on the thermal decompositions and oxidations of TKX-50 and twinned TKX-50

Abstract:To study the influence of twinned crystals on the performance of TKX-50, normal TKX-50 (N-TKX-50) and twinned TKX-50 (T-TKX-50) supercells are constructed, and ReaxFF-Ig reactive molecular dynamics simulations are performed to study the thermal decomposition and oxidation of N-TKX-50 and T-TKX-50 at 1000, 2000 and 3000 K. The mechanism of thermal decomposition and oxidation of N-TKX-50 and T-TKX-50 are analyzed in terms of potential energy evolution, primary reaction paths, and the intermediate and final products. We find that T-TKX-50 possesses higher decomposition and consumption rate than NTKX-50 at the same temperature conditions, while the decomposition and the oxidation end-products of N-TKX-50 and T-TKX-50 are the same. These results confirm that the T-TKX-50 crystal is unfavorable for the thermal stability of TKX-50. We believe that this work can provide some guidance for investigating the decomposition and oxidation of other materials.

Abstract:In order to investigate the thermal decomposition mechanism of the energetic cocrystal TKX‑55 and the effect of solvent component dioxane （1，4‑dioxane， DIO） on the decay of the energetic component 5，5´‑bis（2，4，6‑trinitrophenyl）‑2，2´‑bis（1，3，4‑oxadiazole）（BTNPBO）， the molecular dynamics simulations on TKX‑55 and pure solvent component DIO were carried out with the ReaxFF‑lg （Reactive Force Field‑Low Gradients） force field. The results show that the initial decomposition reaction of TKX‑55 includes the dimerization of energetic molecules， the hydrogen transfer between energetic and solvent components， the ring‑opening reaction of 1，3，4‑oxadiazole in energetic components， and the dissociation of nitro group. The dimerization reaction facilitates the rapid growth of the subsequent clusters， and the release of the heat and the stable small molecule products are restricted by the formation of a large number of clusters. It is one essential reason for the high heat resistance of TKX‑55. For the pure solvent， the heat release and clustering are constrained at low temperatures； while enhanced at elevated temperatures. The main role of DIO molecules in TKX‑55 is thought‑to adsorb small reactive intermediates （such as OH， NO， NO2， etc.） and thereby inhibit the decomposition of BTNPBO.

Abstract:The crystal morphology and crystallization behavior of 1,3,5-triamino-2,4,6-trinitrobenzene(TATB) were calculated by using BFDH,Growth Morphology and Equilibrium Morphology methods contained in Morphology module of Materials Studio,and the specific crystal facet area,appendiculate energy,surface energy,the crystal facet relative growing velocity were obtained.The structures of important crystal facets,the growth habit of the crystal and the relationship between the structures of crystal facets and surfactants were analyzed.The results show that the surfactant containing H and O in the functional group can control crystal morphology more effectively.

Abstract:Crystal morphology of CL-20/TFAZ cocrystal in vacuum was predicted using the attachment energy (AE) model. Additionally, the modified attachment energy (MAE) model and molecular dynamics (MD) method were utilized to predict the crystal morphology of CL-20/TFAZ cocrystal in four different binary solvents, namely, isopropyl alcohol (IPA)/acetone (AC), IPA/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), IPA/ethyl acetate (EA), and IPA/water (H2O). The radial distribution function (RDF) between the solvent and crystal surface and the mean square displacement (MSD) of the solvent were calculated. The findings showed that the morphology of CL-20/TFAZ cocrystal in vacuum was an irregular polyhedron with eleven important growth surfaces: (001), (1−10), (110), (100), (011), (0−11), (10−1), (020), (0−20), (11−1), and (1−1−1), with the (001) surface having the highest area ratio of 31.693 %. The crystalline morphology in IPA/AC, IPA/DMSO, and IPA/EA solvents was block-shaped, while it was rod-shaped in IPA/H2O. Comparing the RDF values of the four solvents, IPA/H2O exhibited the largest g(r) value and could more easily adsorb onto the crystal surface of CL-20/TFAZ cocrystal. Interestingly, IPA/H2O solvent had the smallest MSD value, suggesting the slowest diffusion rate, while IPA/AC solvent exhibited the fastest diffusion rate. Overall, IPA/EA solvents were more suitable for the formation of CL-20/TFAZ cocrystal.

Modelling and Simulation in Materials Science and Engineering

Abstract:A virtual front tracking modified cellular automaton (CA) method is applied to simulate solid phase transformation with a specific crystallographic preferred orientation in a TA15 alloy, to eliminate the dependence of the traditional CA method on space meshing. Simulation results demonstrate the capabilities of the new model in growth anisotropy modeling at large space and time scales, as well as quantitative analysis and description of the precipitated new phase morphology relates to the solute diffusion space by comparison with the diagonal modeling method and rotation of cell sites technique. The isothermal phase transformation kinetics is analysed, which exhibits the desired agreement with the prediction result of the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami analytical equation, thereby a time-temperature-transformation curve is predicted. The crystallography characteristics are consistent with electron backscattered diffraction analysis data. Using the established model, microstructure evolution during the isothermal heat treatment of the TA15 alloy is simulated so that the microstructure heredity with thermal cycling is vividly reflected.

Abstract:Dihydroxylammonium 5,5'-bistetrazole-1,1'-diolate (TKX-50) is a newly synthesized explosive with excellent comprehensive properties. Cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine (HMX) is currently one of the highest energy explosives used around the world. TKX-50/HMX cocrystal can improve the defects of TKX-50 and HMX and vastly expand their application scope. TKX-50 and HMX supercell structures and TKX-50/HMX cocrystal structures were established based on their crystal cell parameters and the formation mechanism of the cocrystals, respectively. The binding energy, radial distribution function (RDF), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), cohesive energy density (CED) and mechanical properties were simulated based on the equilibrium structures of models via molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The calculated results indicate that the TKX-50/HMX cocrystal forms as a new structure under the intermolecular forces, and the cocrystal structures of TKX-50 substituted by HMX on its slow-growing facets are more stable. Moreover, the cocrystal structure has greatly improved the high sensitivity defect of HMX and the mechanical properties of TKX-50 and HMX; thus the cocrystal will be more likely to be used widely in the energetic materials field.
