Abstract:Zinc powders were electrodeposited from ZnCl 2 baths with containing suspension of unsoluble particles such as graphite, PbO 2,SnO 2,TiO 2, SiO 2 etc.. The structure, morphology and corrosion behavior of zinc powder were analyzed. SEM results showed that the dendritic growth of zinc can be inhibited by applying the suspension method. Suspension of PbO 2, SnO 2, TiO 2, SiO 2 and In 2O 3 could greatly improve the corrosion protection of zinc powder in 5 mol/L KOH. In addition, fractal theory is employed to further explain the results.

Abstract:The phosphating thermodynamics was discussed to conclude that rare earth is valid for improving the quality of phosphate coating for anchoring layer.With multiplex accelerant containing rare-earth compound,a novel anti-corrosive zinc-phosphating process at the low temperature,very feasible as painting pretreatment of steel and iron parts,was developed and optimized.The experimental results show that the phosphating effect is very good for cold-rolling A3 thin steel plate used widely to home appliances crust.With the fast LZP zinc-phosphating solution including 1.0~2.0g/L rare-earth accelerant,the phosphate coating thickness about 3μm is obtained at 40℃ in 3~4min,which is fine and compact crystal,highly adhesive to substrate of A3 steel plate and excellent corrosion resistance.Moreover,experimental results of online painting show that the paint coating has excellent characteristics of shock resistance,corrosion resistance and adhesion.

Abstract:Aimed at the features of the quartz-containing ceramic radome material, three kinds of surface coating materials were selected in the present investigation. Based on the dispersion strengthening mechanism, a proper quantity of ceramic powder filler was added into the coating material to prepare the surface coating with different performances, which were tested and compared according to China national standard. The results shows that the ceramic powder filler has different effects on the hardness, the bond strength, the impact resistance, the flexibility and the film formability of the coating layer.

Abstract:The technique of Zn-Cr coating was preliminary studied in this paper. Firstly, the contents of zinc powder, CrO3 and H3BO3 in the Zn-Cr coating paint were preliminary studied. The two kinds of reductant R1 and R2 were selected and the contents of them were determined. Then the optimum composition of the Zn-Cr coating paint was researched. At last, the additive A was selected to improve the adhesion of the coating. Further research efforts were pointed out.

Abstract:This study investigated the impact of iron powder on zinc reactivity and anticorrosion performance of zinc-rich epoxy (ZRE) coatings. Incorporating iron powder into ZRE coatings enhanced their overall anticorrosion performance, as evidenced by improved cathodic protection and reduced rust creep in salt spray tests. Furthermore, salt spray and EIS tests on cracked ZRE coatings demonstrated the enhanced sacrificial cathodic protection and physical barrier property with the inclusion of iron powder, attributed to the promoted sacrificial oxidation of zinc particles at damaged areas. The enhanced zinc dissolution in the presence of iron powder was also observed in immersion tests and potentiodynamic polarization tests on compressed Zn and ZnFe pellets.

Abstract:The electrochemical behaviors of the zinc-rich paints based multilayer organic coatings in 3.5% NaCl solution were studied. The results show that the zinc powder has a minor cathodic protection effect. The protection effect is due to the repair of holes by the corrosion product of zinc powder. Under the epoxy topcoat, the corrosion rate of the zinc powder in inorganic zinc-rich coatings is faster than that in organic type.

Abstract:在电泳清漆环氧树脂中掺杂硝酸锆(Zr(NO3)4·5H2O),采用一步电泳法制备ZrO2掺杂改性的阴极电泳漆涂层,用于镀锌钢的腐蚀防护。红外测试表明,硝酸锆水解产物ZrO2与环氧树脂粒子共沉积构成阴极电泳涂层,并在涂层/金属界面发生富集。电化学阻抗谱、盐水浸泡和电化学扫描显微镜等结果表明,硝酸锆掺杂的电泳漆涂层防腐蚀性能得到大幅度提高。这可能是由于一方面掺杂形成的ZrO2填补了涂层本体的微孔缺陷,另一方面ZrO2在涂层与金属界面形成的富集层提高了涂层与金属之间的结合力。
A Comparative Study on the Anti-Corrosive Performance of Zinc Phosphate in Powder Coatings

Abstract:Powder coatings are gaining popularity for their economic and environmental benefits. Additives (pigments) such as zinc phosphate enhance the anti-corrosive properties of coatings, but their behavior in powder coatings has not been extensively studied. In this study, zinc phosphate was incorporated into three powder coating systems: polyester clearcoat, polyester and epoxy coatings with filler BaSO4. Neutral salt spray and electrochemical tests (OCP, LPR, and EIS) confirmed that the anti-corrosive performance improved with the addition of zinc phosphate. The optimal additive dosage was determined to be 2% for all of the coating systems studied here, based on salt spray tests. Here, the time until failure increased by 1.5 to 2 times. Using electrochemical tests, an optimal additive dosage of 8% was found for the polyester clearcoat, while the other coating systems maintained an optimal additive dosage of 2%. Performance increased by as much as one order of magnitude based on resistance/impedance measurements. This suggested a synergistic effect between the additive and the filler. The passivation layer was confirmed by both X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Based on the results and discussion presented in this article, the discrepancy was caused by different features of the two tests, such that the electrochemical tests probe the function of intact coatings, whereas salt spray measures only the corrosion spreading from the scribe. It is proposed that the two test methods characterize different aspects of the coatings, corresponding to their service conditions. This has theoretical and practical significance in the evaluation of anti-corrosive coatings. Other properties of the coatings, including adhesion, gloss, distinctness-of-image, and pencil hardness, were measured as per applicable standards and the conformance was verified.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) is considered an ideal material for applications involving corrosion resistance due to its excellent properties. However, the structure, surface functional groups, and distribution of GO in zinc-rich coatings (ZRCs) have a remarkable influence on coating properties. GO was reduced in a hydrochloric acid environment using spherical zinc powder, and the resulting products were subsequently dried and incorporated into waterborne inorganic ZRCs. Results show that zinc powder effectively reduces oxygen-containing functional groups on the GO surface, and reduced GO (rGO) is deposited on the surface of zinc powder. This improves the electron migration efficiency of rGO and decreases its surface energy. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and salt spray test results demonstrate that among the coatings, the ZRC containing 0.2 wt.% rGO (40Zn–0.2rGO) exhibits the highest impedance modulus at the low frequency end. Its impedance modulus reaches 1 × 104 Ω∙cm2 after 216 h immersion. Furthermore, 40Zn–0.2rGO exhibits no signs of corrosion at the marked areas even after 216 h of the salt spray test. The good dispersion effect of the added 0.2 wt.% rGO in the coating, coupled with its exceptional electrical conductivity, facilitates the enhanced contribution of zinc powder to cathodic protection, thereby mitigating the matrix erosion caused by corrosive media. Following zinc powder corrosion, the surface of the coating can still be adorned with insoluble corrosion products such as ZnO or Zn5(OH)8Cl2, thereby offering shielding protection to the substrate.

Abstract:A comprehensive analysis was conducted to examine the crystal phase composition, surface and cross-section morphology, elemental composition, thickness, and corrosion resistance of coatings. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was employed to investigate the texture and crystal phase of the materials while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were utilized to assess the surface and cross-section structure. Additionally, electrochemical techniques were employed to evaluate the corrosion performance. Compared to DC electroplating, the corrosion potential of pulsed galvanized ferroalloy alloy coating increased from −1031 mV to −1008 mV, and the corrosion current density decreased from 3.122 × 10−5 A∙cm−2 to 0.321 × 10−5 A∙cm−2. Moreover, the corrosion rate value of the coating obtained by the pulse rectifier (0.386 × 10−5 g m−2 h−1) was lower than that obtained by the DC power supply (3.75 × 10−5 g m−2 h−1). Additionally, pulsed electrodeposition reduced the iron content of the coating by 0.7%, thereby enhancing its corrosion resistance and flatness. The impedance parameters of the zinc–iron alloy coating acquired through the 30% duty cycle monopulser process exhibit superior performance compared to DC electroplating. Evidently, the monopulse coating’s structure enhances crystal packing density, augments coating thickness, improves adhesion to the substrate interface, and optimizes grain distribution uniformity. These factors are crucial determinants of the corrosion behavior exhibited by Ze–Fe coating.

Abstract:In order to overcome the poor dispersion of traditional inorganic zinc-rich coating, addressing the sedimentation and the agglomeration caused by high zinc powder content and improve the anti-corrosion performance of coatings. In this paper, the molybdate intercalated hydrotalcite flake zinc layer double hydroxide (ZnAl-NO3-/LDH) was synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis method at first, and the KH560 modified the Mo/LDH flake zinc powder was further obtained by ion exchange method. The results show that the samples have a layered structure of hydrotalcite with good crystal structure through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and the molybdate corrosion inhibiting ions inserted successfully into the interlayer structure of hydrotalcite. Meanwhile, different contents of pigments and fillers were added into the inorganic zinc-rich coatings. It was found that the Nyquist radius of curvature and modulus value of the coating were the largest with a pigment and filler content of 40 %, the maximum corrosion potential was -0.017V, and the minimum corrosion current density was 3.377 × 10-7 A-cm-2. The result indicates that the coating has the best corrosion resistance with 40 % pigment content, which has good application prospects in the fields of cross-sea bridges, natural gas and oil pipelines et al.
A Study and Application of Zinc Phosphate Coating on Az91d Magnesium Alloy

Abstract:A technology for obtaining the zinc phosphate coating on an AZ91D magnesium alloy was investigated. The main ingredients in the phosphating bath were H3PO4, ZnO and NaF. This coating has typical phosphate microstructure, and the compositions in this coating analyzed by XRD are Zn3(PO4)2·4H2O, Zn, AlPO4 and MgZn2(PO4)2. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has shown that very fine zinc particles surrounded phosphate crystals and filled in the interstice of the insoluble phosphate. Salt spray tests have indicated that the zinc phosphate coating has better corrosion resistance due to the presence of crystalline zinc in the coating. The zinc phosphate coating was used as the base layer for further paint. Salt spray showed that the paint plus phosphate coating had good corrosion resistance. The adhesion of paint on the zinc phosphate coating was better than that of paint on chromate conversion coating due to the microporous structure of the phosphate coating.

Abstract:The influence of surface roughness on the performance of zinc rich paint(ZRP) coatings was studied. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy( EIS) measurements were used to assess the corrosion prevention performance of the ZRP coatings. Furthermore, the EIS data of the steel-ZRP-sea water system were interpreted according to equivalent circuit models and the corresponding parameters were derived to assess the coating deterioration with time. The results show that the rougher surface favors better protection effect of the ZRP coatings. The protection potential of ZRP coatings for the standards and codes of practice is -0.78 V(vs SCE).

Abstract:The effect of zinc powder content and contamination of epoxy zinc-rich primer/substrate interface, on the protective performance of the zinc-rich coatings was investigated by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and corrosion potential monitoring. The degradation mechanism of the zinc-rich coatings was elucidated. It was shown that effective barrier can not be formed in the coatings with low zinc content.. The attack of zinc particles in zinc-rich coatings is explained in terms of diffusion control through the film of zinc corrosion products around the zinc particles. The surface contamination of the substrate is vital to the performance of the organic coatings protecting the substrate steel. The surface contamination will lead to not only the impairment of the performance of the zinc-rich coatings but also the acceleration of the degradation processes of the steel substrate.

Abstract:A Zn-Sn coating of ~30 μm thickness was prepared on an iron substrate by mechanical deposition using zinc and tin powders as raw materials. The Zn-Sn coating consists of zinc powder particles physically stacked with tin powder particles and filled with reduced tin, and the tin content in the coating is 20%–30%. The resulting Zn-Sn coating was characterized and analyzed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), polarization curves (Tafel), electrochemical impedance (EIS), and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS). The results showed that the Zn powder was co-deposited with the Sn powder in a portable manner and the Sn powder was deflected and deformed to a great extent. The spot-flocculated reduced Sn also covered the surface of the Zn powder to fill the interstices of the coating to make the coating more compact. Compared with the pure Zn coating, the Zn-Sn coating has a positive shift of 68 mV in the self-corrosion potential in the polarization test, and the corrosion current was only 20% of that of the pure Zn coating. The reduced Sn had a shielding effect on the Zn powder and at the same time, in combination with inert tin powder, the polarization resistance of the plated layer increased to 1118 Ω/cm2. Furthermore, compared to the pure zinc layer, the time of white rust and red rust increased by 24 and 240 h, respectively. In addition, the XPS results showed that the Zn-Sn plating layer was clearly passivated, which was mainly due to the formation of Zn(OH)2 and Sn(OH)2. The results also emphasized that the tin element in the Zn-Sn plated layer can maintain the morphology of zinc powder, compact the plating layer, and prevent the release of corrosion products, thus improving the corrosion resistance of the Zn-Sn coating.

Abstract:Abstract Corrosion of mechanical components has been of wide interest in recent decades. Corrosion is caused by physicochemical action between a metal and its environment, which can result in changes in the metal’s properties and functional damage in mechanical components. The main corrosion manifestations of zinc alloy coatings in marine environments are discussed in this paper, which first explores the application of high-performance aluminum alloy coatings in industry. Subsequently, the ZAS35 alloy used for this paper was experimentally prepared, and orthogonal tests were utilized to determine the optimum matching values of process parameters for zinc alloy coatings to generate materials. The hardness and wear resistance of ZAS35 were evaluated against other zinc alloys. An iterative learning control algorithm was employed to determine the thickness of the zinc alloy coating. The optimal control of the steady-state process of coating thickness can be achieved by using the NARX dynamic neural network model as a predictive identification model for zinc alloy coating thickness. Finally, data were collected using an optical microscope to quantitatively analyze the effect of zinc alloy plating on mechanical life. When the thickness of zinc alloy is 1.7 μm , the probability of life is [947.56,978.36]×10 3 h interval t=0.999, which is improved by 409~684.11×10 3 h compared with the plating thickness of 1.10 μm . After adding aluminum elements to zinc plating, the corrosion potential of the plating decreases from −800mV to −1000mV, and the zinc-aluminum alloy prevents electrochemical corrosion of the plated layer with cathodic corrosion inhibition.
Electrochemical Behavior of Organic and Inorganic Zinc-Rich Coatings in 3.5% NaCl Solution

Abstract:Performance comparisons between organic and inorganic zinc-rich paints (ZRPs) were carried out. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) Measurements were used to assess the corrosion prevention performance of the ZRP coatings. The results show that during the cathodic protection period the potentials of the epoxy systems are less negative than those of the silicate system. For the zinc-rich ethyl silicate paints, the initial values of the resistance through the binder and the charge transfer resistance associated with zinc dissolution are several orders of magnitude lower than those of the organic zinc paints, while the initial values of the capacitance due to the binder layer between Zn dust and the double layer capacitance for zinc dissolution are several orders of magnitude higher than those of the organic zinc paints. Furthermore, the deterioration with time of capability of the zinc particles in the paint to provide cathodic protection to the steel was interpreted.

Abstract:In the study, a conductive polypyrrole (PPy) is deposited on the lamellar sericite powder (SCP) surfaces by an in situ oxidization growth method and the prepared PPy/SCP conductive additive is successfully applied on the zinc-rich primer (ZRP) coating. The equal mass substitution and the equal volume substitution methods of the conductive additives to zinc dusts are discussed, as well as the optimal replacing ratio to achieve the best corrosion protection effect of the ZRP coatings. The results indicate that the equal volume substitution method is in favor of corrosion resistance of coating film. The salt spray test and the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and polarization curves show that the prepared ZRP coating with a 66% zinc content and replacing ratio of 1:3 possesses the best corrosion-resistant performance and an optimal adhesion strength. The replacement of PPy/SCP particles to zinc dusts using the equal volume substitution method is feasible to achieve the improvement in anticorrosion ability through a synergic function of the cathodic protection effect and barrier effect.

Abstract:Particle size is a critical consideration for many powder coating-related industries since it significantly influences the properties of the produced materials. However, the effect of particle size on the characteristics of plasma sprayed NiCrBSi coatings is not well understood. This work investigates the microstructures, hardness and electrochemical corrosion behavior of plasma sprayed NiCrBSi coatings synthesized using different-sized powders. All coatings mainly consist of Ni, N3B, CrB, Cr7C3 and Cr3C2 phases. The coatings produced by small particles (50–75 μm) exhibit lower porosity (2.0 ± 0.8%). Such coatings show a higher fraction (15.5 vol.%) of the amorphous phase and lower hardness (700 HV0.5) than the counterparts (8.7 vol.% and 760 HV0.5, respectively) produced by large particles (75–100 μm) with higher porosity (3.0 ± 1.6%). Meanwhile, the coatings produced from smaller particles possess a larger number of non-bonded boundaries, leading to the easier penetration of corrosive medium, as well as a higher corrosion current density (0.254 ± 0.062 μA/cm2) and a lower charge transfer resistance (0.37 ± 0.07 MΩ cm2). These distinctions are attributed to particle size-induced different melting degrees and stackings of in-flight particles during deposition.
