Abstract:This paper describes design and simulation of a 2way nonresonant power divider/combiner which may be applied in millimeter power sources of millimeter communication and radar. It shows that the combiner has simple structure and high powercombining efficiency.It is an ideal way of power combining.

Abstract:It is extremely difficult to obtain high output power with silicon based processes, which presents one of the greatest challenges for realizing fully integrated transceivers, especially at millimeter-wave frequencies. For this reason, various power combining methods have been proposed to achieve higher power levels.In this paper, a novel power combining method suitable for millimeter-wave applications is presented. The power combining network is synthesized in package utilizing wafer level packaging technology, with an array of power sources of moderate output power capability assumed to be distributed on chip, which means applying further combining in addition to existing on-chip power combining scheme for potentially even higher output power is possible.The power combining network is composed of more basic power combining units, each consisting of one substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) resonator coupling four lambda/4 standing-wave resonators, which can be synthesized using two quarter-wavelength vertical vias with one end open and the other end shorted. For power combining purpose, the open end of each lambda/4 resonator is connected to the differential output of one on-chip power source, while the shorted end is realized using one of the two metal plates of the SIW resonator. The coupling between the SIW resonator and lambda/4 resonators is through slotting on the metal plate to allow magnetic leakage so that oscillation in lambda/4 resonators will excite the SIW resonator to oscillate. As the quality factor of the SIW resonator is much larger than those of lambda/4 resonators, energy is mainly confined in the cavity of the SIW resonator so that power combing is achieved.Example design for 60 GHz application is detailed in the paper with simulation results using commercial CST software showing the effectiveness of the power combining method.

Abstract:This paper presents the analysis and design of a novel millimeter-wave power combining circuit. This combing circuit is composed of a new style 3-dB combiner, which achieves low-loss, wide-band, and symmetric power division. Different from conventional Wilkinson hybrid, the proposed combiner requires no isolating resistor, and is easier fabricated and more suitable for millimeter integrate circuits. Analytical and experimental work on a two-way combining circuit with wave-guide ports in Ka-band shows the combiner has an insertion loss of 0.2dB, and a power-combining efficiency above 80% in 32–33GHz is obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, a waveguide-based 1×2 power-combining structure at Ka-band using double antipodal finline-to-microstrip transitions is proposed, and the optimal tapers are analyzed by using spectral domain method. A very low back-to-back insertion loss of 0.9 dB and return loss better than 12.0 dB are obtained from the structure in 29-39 GHz. The two-way power combining approach was extended to four-way by vertical stacking inside the WR-28 waveguide. Using 4 monolithic-microwave integrated-circuit (MMIC) power amplifiers, a maximum of 6-W saturated-output power is achieved from the combiner at the operation band of chips. 82% of the average combining-efficiency and 21% of the power added efficiency are estimated, separately. Validity and feasibility of the proposed approach have been demonstrated by the measured results.

Abstract:A millimeter-wave waveguide-based out-of-phase power divider/combiner using microstrip patch antenna has been proposed in this paper. The stepped rectangular waveguide provides smooth impedance matching from standard rectangular waveguide to oversized rectangular waveguide. In order to obtain good amplitude balance, four symmetrical microstrip patch antennas are utilized. A Ka-band four-way passive power combiner is designed and measured. The measured results show a reasonable agreement with the simulated ones.

Abstract:An improved W-band four-way power divider/combiner using turnstile coupling waveguide has been proposed in this paper. This divider/ combiner possess properties of low loss, high power capacity, compact structure, good return loss, and good heat dissipation. The 3D EM simulation results show that, from 85GHz to 100GHz, the return loss is better than 22dB and the transmission coefficient is about -6dB, meanwhile the output return loss is great than 15dB ranging from 88-100GHz. Applied with MMIC power amplifiers, this power divider/combiner can be used in solid-state power-combining amplifying module, and high power radar systems in W-band.

Abstract:A novel millimeter-wave power divider/combiner based on rectangular waveguide to multi-layer substrate integrated waveguide (RWG-MLSIW) transition is proposed in this paper. The input signal can be divided into N way directly by using multi-layer substrate integrated waveguides stacked together and plugged into a normal rectangular waveguide. A four-way multi-layer SIW power combiner operating at Ka-band is designed, fabricated and measured. Good agreement between the experiments and the simulations can be observed, demonstrating 8 GHz bandwidth (from 29 to 37 GHz) with 15-dB input return loss.

Abstract:A compact broadband combiner with a high power capacity and a low insertion loss, which is especially useful for solid-state power sources where multi-way power synthesis is needed, was designed and experimentally investigated. The combiner could combine the microwave signals of sixteen terminals into a single one and was based on a radial-line waveguide whose circumferential symmetry benefited the amplitude and phase consistency of the combiner. Simulation and experimental results showed that the prototype device, designed for S-band applications, exhibited a reflection coefficient S1,1 < ‚ąí20 dB in the range of 2.06‚Äď2.93 GHz, which corresponds to a relative bandwidth of approximately 34.6%. At 2.45 GHz, the phase imbalance was ¬Ī4.5¬į and the 16-way transmission coefficient was concentrated around ‚ąí12.0~‚ąí12.3 dB. The insertion loss of the device at ambient and elevated temperatures was simulated and experimentally verified, which is of importance for the design of similar high-power microwave combiners. High-power tests proved that even without enforced wind or liquid cooling, the device can handle continuous power (CW) of at least 3.9 kW, which can be much enhanced by taking regular cooling measures. The combined features of the designed combiner suggest promising applications for power synthesis in high-power, solid-state RF sources.

Abstract:A low-profile millimeter-wave substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) power divider/combiner is presented in this paper. The simplified model of this compact SIW power dividing/combining structure has been developed. Analysis based on equivalent circuits gives the design formula for perfect power dividing/combining. In order to verify the validity of the design method, a four-way SIW power divider/combiner circuit operating at Ka band is designed, fabricated and measured. Good agreement between simulated and measured results is found for the proposed passive power divider/combiner. Experiments on the four-way passive divider/combiner back-to-back design demonstrate a minimum overall insertion loss of 1.5 dB at 31.1 GHz, corresponding to a power-combining efficiency of 84%. The measured 10-dB return loss bandwidth is demonstrated to be 2.2 GHz, and its 0.5-dB bandwidth was 2 GHz.

Abstract:A Ka-Band spatial power dividing/combing hybrid transition circuit using rectangular waveguide connector is presented. The simulation model of this power divider/combiner structure is developed. A four-way waveguide power dividing/combing circuit has been designed, fabricated and tested. In the frequency range of 34 to 36 GHz, the return loss is less than 15 dB, and the insert loss is better than 1.8 dB, which indicate that this power dividing/combing hybrid transition circuit has the advantages of low insertion loss and compact size. Good agreement is obtained between the measured results and the simulated results.

Abstract:A four-way power combiner with small cross-sectional size and high power capacity is investigated in this study. The design is based on the cascaded structure of three rectangular hybrid rings and one coaxial-to-waveguide transition. The combiner consists of coaxial and waveguide structures to ensure high power capacity. The compact cross-sectional size (0.71 lambda x 0.74 lambda at the centre frequency) is achieved by employing transverse electric magnetic (TEM)-mode coaxial line structures. A prototype power combiner is fabricated and tested to verify the design results. It has been demonstrated that the proposed power combiner has a power capacity of 16 kW. The return loss is better than 25 dB, isolation degree higher than 27 dB, and amplitude imbalance within 0.16 dB limits in the operating band 8-9 GHz, validated with both simulations and experiments. The proposed structure is suitable for kW-level power combining and it can also be implemented in planar forms for a wider range of applications.

Abstract:A multi-octave power combining structure based on rectangular coaxial transmission line (RCTL) is presented in this paper. In this structure, a tapered transition T-junction is employed for power combining, while the operating bandwidth is extended to cover multiple octaves by introducting multistage impedance transformation. A suspended structure is adopted for the inner conductor, which minimizes the dielectric loss and improves the power handling. Utilizing this technology, a prototype of four-way combiner with simulated power combining capacity of 2kW was designed and fabricated. According to the measured results, the insertion and reflection loss is better than -0.5dB and -15dB, respectively, along with excellent amplitude and phase balance.

Abstract:In this paper, a high efficiency D-band 32-channel power divider/combiner is proposed. The design incorporates rectangular waveguide, coaxial line, radial waveguide, and three matching transitions. The electromagnetic wave is fed by a center rectangular waveguide port and then transmits to the radial waveguide through a coaxial line. Next, the electromagnetic wave is transferred from the radial waveguide to 32 rectangular waveguide ports. Note that three matching transitions are utilized to overcome the discontinuity in transport nodes. Based on such direct power divider configuration, this radial power divider/combiner has the merit of high efficiency with a large number of channels. To verify the mechanism, a D-band 32-channel radial power divider/combiner is fabricated and measured. The measured minimum insertion loss of two power dividers with back to back configuration is 2.74 dB, which is equivalent to the combination efficiency of 72.9%.

Abstract:In this paper, a W-band four-way power divider/ combiner using waveguide rat-race hybrid and double-probe waveguide-to-microstrip transition is proposed. This divider/ combiner has properties of low loss, equal power splitting, compact structure, good return loss, and good heat dissipation. The 3D EM simulation results show that, from 90GHz to 100GHz, the return loss is better than 20dB and the insertion loss is less than 0.3 dB. Integrated with MMIC power amplifiers, the divider/combiner can be used in power combing systems to obtain solid-state high power with a high efficiency in W-band.

Abstract:A novel power divider/combiner using microstrip probes array in the oversized coaxial waveguide is proposed in this paper. The simple electromagnetic modeling of this power dividing/combining structure has been developed. Analysis based on equivalent circuits gives the design formula for perfect power dividing/combining. A four-way waveguide power divider has been designed and fabricated. The measured results agree well with the simulated results. The measured 15-dB return loss bandwidth of this waveguide power divider is demonstrated to be 28.6% and its 0.5-dB insertion loss bandwidth 41.3%.

Abstract:High power amplifier is the key element of microwave transmitters. Solid-state spatial power combiner is issued to replace traveling wave tube amplifier (TWTA) in space communication systems. To comply with space requirements a new compact Ka-band spatial power combining architecture is proposed using a double-faced tray. To match the 2 times 2 combining structure, double antipodal finline is designed to achieve power distributing/combining and transition between waveguide and microstrip. A 29~30 GHz spatial power combiner is designed following this architecture. With it the compact architecture proves effective and prospective.

Abstract:As a low-loss, high-performance and easy-integration waveguide structure, half mode substrate integrated waveguide (HMSIW) has been widely used in the design of integrated microwave and millimeter wave circuits. A simplified two way 180° phase different planar power divider is first proposed in this paper. Good results in 32-36.2GHz with the amplitude unbalance of 0.5dB and 34-36GHz with the phase unmatching of 5° are achieved. Then, two types of compact power combiners using proposed power divider with the creative design of 180° phase difference are presented, the size is much smaller, and the loss of power combiners is less than 1dB at the frequency range of 32.9-35.8GHz.
Broadband variable radial waveguide power combiner using multi-section impedance matching technique

Abstract:An L-band spatial variable radial waveguide power combiner with broad bandwidth and high power capacity is proposed. By adopting several techniques simultaneously, including multi-section impedance matching probes, grounded disc, and axial slots, the performance of the power combiner is improved. The parameters of the combiner are calculated, simulated and tested. It has a measured operation bandwidth ranging from 1.2 GHz to 2 GHz with VSWRs less than 1.4 at all ports. The extra insertion losses between the input ports and output port are less than 0.3 dB and the isolation between the input ports is better than 15 dB. The power capacity can reach 600 W and the combining efficiency achieves 90 %. The results from calculation, simulation, and measurement reasonably agree with each other.

Abstract:A novel millimetre-wave quasi-optical low-loss power divider based on the dipole antenna is presented. This dipole antenna array is inserted in the E-plane of the rectangular waveguide to implement the power-dividing function. A Ka-band four-way passive power combiner is designed, fabricated and measured. The measured results show that the minimum insertion loss is about 0.4 dB from 32.1 to 34 GHz, whereas the return loss is less than 10 dB from 31.5 to 35.9 GHz. The measured results agree with the simulated ones closely.
