Abstract:Laser diode with narrow linewidth and high frequency stability is extremely important in many fields like high-resolution laser spectroscopy,atomic frequency standards,atmospheric and environmental monitoring,optical communications and so on.Therefore,research on frequency stabilization of laser diode is necessary and valuable.The frequency stabilization technologies which are wildly used for semiconductor laser at present are summarized.Their principles are simply given and frequency stability,advantages, disadvantages for every solution are fully analyzed.Finally,the possible development tendency of frequency stabilization technologies for semiconductor laser are presented.
External Cavity Diode Laser with Long-Term Frequency Stabilization Based on Mode Boundary Detection

Abstract:We have implemented a long-term frequency stabilization system for external cavity diode laser (ECDL) based on mode boundary detection method. In this system, the saturated absorption spectroscopy was used. The current and the grating of the ECDL were controlled by a computer-based feedback control system. By checking any mode boundaries in the spectrum, the control system determined how to adjust current to avoid mode hopping. This procedure was executed periodically to ensure the long-term stabilization of ECDL in the absence of mode hops. This laser diode system without antireflection-coating had over operated in the condition of long-term mode hopping free stabilization for almost 400 hours. Last year, we have added template matching technics to the system. The ECDL stabilization time has been extended to almost 1200 hours without any manual intervention further. This is a significant improvement of ECDL frequency stabilization system. This technique is very useful in some applications such as laser atomic cooling and atom fountain etc.

Abstract:We have realized a long-term frequency stabilization system for external cavity diode laser (ECDL) based on mode boundary detection method. In this system, the saturated absorption spectroscopy was used. The current and the grating of the ECDL were controlled by a computer-based feedback control system. Abstract:Firstly, the short-term stability of the laser's frequency stabilized is theoretically studied by methods of third and fifth harmonic, and the experiment of increasing the frequency short-term stability is performed. Secondly, the semiconductor laser's frequency stabilized circuit system is discussed, and by using this system to take the rubidium 87's hyperfine spectra F=2 F=3, 1 as reference frequency, that laser's frequency is stabilized by the third harmonic sign and fifth harmonic sign of saturated absorption spectra of 87Rb. The laser used is DL100 of TuiOptics, center wavelength is 780 nm, linewidth is 1 MHz, and finally a frequency stabilization got is 1012. We computed the short-term stability generated by these two stabilization technology theoretically is computed, and the calculated result with the experimental result is compared, and they are similar to each other.

Abstract:Semiconductor laser with narrow linewidth and high frequency stability has been widely used in precision interference measurements, optical frequency standards, laser communication, optical gyroscope, laser radar, measurements of fundamental physics constants and cold atomic system, et. The frequency drift of a free running semiconductor laser may be up to several GHz per day. Therefore, the research on frequency stabilization of semiconductor laser is extremely necessary. A variety of frequency stabilization techniques was developed. As an example of 780 nm semiconductor laser, the principles and experimental realizations of frequency stabilization were introduced, such as Doppler-free saturated absorption spectroscopy, Doppler-free Dichroic spectroscopy, modulation transfer spectroscopy, frequency modulation spectroscopy and frequency-to-voltage conversion technology, et al. Meanwhile, the performance and characteristics of different frequency stabilization methods were analyzed.

Abstract:Frequency stabilized laser with narrow line width has an extensive application in the industrial production control. However, the Frequency variation of free working semiconductor laser limits the use of laser device. To stabilize the frequency of semiconductor laser, this paper presents a new way which is based on second harmonic absorption characteristics to achieve frequency stabilization of narrow line width diode laser. We have measured the second harmonic signal of water vapor with DFB diode laser of 1. 396 mu m, and the results show that laser output wavelength drift in 100 hours has been effectively controlled within +/- 0. 16 pm. The absorption peak doesn't vary with environmental temperature after frequency stabilization. This method is simpler and more reliable and has broad application prospects for frequency stabilization of diode laser.

Abstract:An improved method for stabilizing a frequency-quadrupled 214.5-nm tunable diode laser system is reported.Improvements to the method include a homemade logic circuit and the use of a Fabry-Perot optical spectrum analyzer as a transfer cavity.Lasers locked with this method exhibit megahertz-level frequency stability measured with an optical frequency comb referenced to a cesium atomic standard.The laser can be locked for hours to days, depending on experiment requirements.Being relatively inexpensive, stable, and robust, the control method can be applied to stabilizing essentially all lasers of deep ultraviolet wavelengths.

Abstract:Laser cooling of polar molecules has made great progress in recent years. Due to the complicated energy levels with the vibrational and rotational states, more lasers are required compared with the laser cooling of atoms. The lack of vapor cell spectroscopy makes the frequency stabilization more complex. We have realized a versatile frequency-stabilization scheme to lock three lasers with one transfer cavity. The long-term drift due to the nonlinear response of the piezoelectric ceramics is carefully characterized. With the passive feedback of the environment of the cavity and zero-offset locking, the linewidth and long-term drift of the laser frequency is maintained to be less than 1 MHz, satisfying the stability required by the laser cooling experiment.

Abstract:The laser frequency stabilization technology is very important in the development of laser applications, and the improvement of this technology has tend to further expectations for portability and low cost, in addition to the realization of strict frequency control. In this context, we construct a dual-cavity laser frequency stabilization system based on an intracavity dual-mode self-reference mechanism. With this approach, we achieve remarkable results with a laser frequency drift of about 6.6 kHz and an Allen deviation (ADEV) of 10−13 levels over an integration time scale from 0.01 s to 1000 s. Notably, the solution achieves one of the best results without the need for an external reference structure. This work provides a way to realize wavelength-stabilized laser sources by interlocking two DFB lasers. This approach is distinguished by its simplicity and cost-effectiveness, making it a promising option for a variety of applications outside of the laboratory environment.

Abstract:In this paper the modulation-free frequency stabilization of laser-diode pumped single frequency solid-state laser was reported. The principle of generating a dispersion-like frequency-discrimination curve using a confocal Fabry-Perot cavity (CFPC) was introduced. In the experiment a LD-pumped 1319 rim monolithic non-planar ring oscillator (NPRO) single frequency Nd: YAG laser was used. With the modulation-free frequency stabilization method, the laser was locked to the resonance frequency of the CFPC, whose jitter frequency was less than +/-500 kHz in the time of 30 minutes estimated from the locked error signal.

Abstract:We designed and realized a compact laser system of which the frequency can be automatically stabilized.The laser system can operate with low power consumption and long-term stability.The power consumption and the volume of the system are reduced through our designed voltage source with high efficiency and low ripple.With the high-performance temperature controller,current controller and automatic frequency stabilization modules,a laser with narrow linewidth and high frequency stability is realized.The linewidth is about 1 MHz,and the frequency stabilities at 1,10,100,1000 s are 1.43 × 10-10,3.90 × 10-11,1.28 × 10 11,2.25 × 10-11,respectively.Compared with the commercial external-cavity diode lasers,the designed system has better long-term frequency stability.The volume of the power supply for the system is reduced by 85％,and the power consumption is reduced by 90％.The system is a new scheme for realizing low power consumption and miniaturization of the frequencystabilized semiconductor laser system.

Abstract:A novel setup of saturated absorption spectroscopy (SAS) is presented. It is based on laser reflections at surfaces of a sample vapor cell. It only needs one cell and one photodiode and is more compact than conventional setups of SAS. Its spectrum is similar to a conventional SAS. The frequency stabilization performance of an external-cavity diode laser with this setup is investigated. A frequency stability of 1.1 x 10(-11) is achieved at an averaging time of 60 s in the Allen variance measurements.

Abstract:The basic principle of frequency stabilization for differential ring lasers is introduced.The transfer characteristic of every part of the frequency stabilization circuit is analyzed respectively.On this basis,the system's open-loop and closed-loop transfer function is presented.From the angle of making the PM(phase margin) up to 45 degrees,the system's parameters are optimized.The result shows that when the open-loop total amplification equals to 33,the frequency stabilization circuit's stability and response speed meet the differential ring lasers' control expectations.

Abstract:Digital laser current modulation (DLCM) is a convenient laser stabilization scheme whose major advantages are simplicity and inexpensiveness of implementation. However, there is a tradeoff between the SNR of the error signal and the laser linewidth due to the direct laser frequency modulation. In this paper, we demonstrated that DLCM can reduce the FWHM linewidth of a tunable diode laser down to 500 kHz using the modulation transfer spectrum of D-2 line of a Li-6 atomic vapor. For this purpose, a theoretical model is provided to analyze the DLCM-based modulation transfer spectrum. From the analysis, we experimentally explored the modulation effect on the DLCM spectrum to minimize the laser linewidth. Our result shows the optimized DLCM can stabilize a diode laser into the sub-megahertz regime without requiring acousto-optic and electro-optic modulators. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:An electro-optical Q-switched RF-excited Z-fold CO(2) waveguide laser was designed, which can output a Q-switched laser and a cavity-dumped laser synchronously. The build-up time method is presented to stabilize the laser frequency. A closed-loop control system was designed to keep the laser oscillating at the peak of the gain curve by measuring the pulse build-up time continuously and controlling the cavity length. In the experiment, the variations for the pulse build-up time and cavity-dumped laser output power with time were recorded in a period of time. The frequency fluctuation is less than ±16 MHz.

Abstract:A new method of laser frequency stabilization using polarization property of an optical cavity is proposed. In a standard Fabry–Perot cavity, the coating layers thickness of cavity mirrors is calculated to obtain the same phase shift for s- and p-wave but a slight detuning from the nominal thickness can produce s- and p-wave phase detuning. As a result, each wave accumulates a different round-trip phase shift and resonates at a different frequency. Using this polarization property, an error signal is generated by a simple setup consisting of a quarter wave-plate rotated at 45°, a polarizing beam splitter and two photodiodes. This method exhibits similar error signal as the Pound–Drever–Hall technique but without need for any frequency modulation. Lock theory and experimental results are presented in this paper.

Abstract:We present a hybrid laser frequency stabilization method combining modulation transfer spectroscopy (MTS) and frequency modulation spectroscopy (FMS) for the cesium D2 transition. In a typical pump-probe setup, the error signal is a combination of the DC-coupled MTS error signal and the AC-coupled FMS error signal. This combines the long-term stability of the former with the high signal-to-noise ratio of the latter. In addition, we enhance the long-term frequency stability with laser intensity stabilization. By measuring the frequency difference between two independent hybrid spectroscopies, we investigate the short-and long-term stability. We find a long-term stability of 7.8 kHz characterized by a standard deviation of the beating frequency drift over the course of 10 h and a short-term stability of 1.9 kHz characterized by an Allan deviation of that at 2 s of integration time.

Abstract:In order to promote the digital and intelligent development of the frequency stabilization of diode laser,a digital assistant frequency stabilization method based on C8051F020 is proposed. The variation of frequency is obtained by detecting saturated absorption signal,and the system feeds back the error amount of frequency change to the current control and temperature control to keep the frequency stabilization of the diode laser. The hardware and the software of the frequency stabilization system are outlined. Experiment shows that it can automatically achieve frequency stabilization after power on,and can work continuously and stably in the long term,and losing lock condition can be quickly locked,the stability of the laser is 8. 39 × 10- 11( 1 s),7.99 ×10- 12( 1 024 s).

Abstract:Classical frequency-stabilized lasers have achieved high-frequency stability and reproducibility; however, their extensive wavelength spacing limits their utility in various scenarios. This study introduces a novel frequency-stabilized laser scheme that integrates a Fabry-Perot etalon (FPE) with digital control technology and wavelength modulation techniques. The FPE, characterized by multiple transmission peaks at minimal frequency intervals, provides stable frequency references for different lasers, thereby enhancing the system's flexibility and adaptability. An error signal is derived from the first-order differentiation of the FPE's transmission curve. A 180° phase difference was observed in the feedback output signal when the laser's central frequency diverged from the reference, determining that the direction of the frequency control was accordingly determined.Employing feedback control, the laser's output frequency is stabilized at the transmission peak frequency of the FPE. Experimental results demonstrate that this stabilization scheme effectively locks the laser's output wavelength to different transmission peak frequencies of the FPE, achieving 25 GHz wavelength spacing. The frequency stability is improved by two orders of magnitude on a second-level timescale, maintained within hundreds of kHz, equating to a frequency stability level of 10−10.
