Abstract:It is found that when a light beam is incident obliquely on a thin film Fabry-Perot filter (FPF) from different incident media (air or substrate), the reflective beam will be shifted in both the forward and the backward directions. Based on this inverted spatial dispersion effect, two thin film FPFs with different directional lateral shifts are assembled to get a thin film superprism with a wider dispersion band. The thin film samples are fabricated as well as tested, and the results are in approximate agreement with numerical simulation. (C) 2007 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:As an ultra-narrow bandwidth optical filter with unique character of high efficiency, Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) has been focused on by both international and domestic researchers in recent years. In this thesis the theoretical and experimental studies on Cs 852 nm FADOF were done on the base of reviewing the domestic and international development. A qualitative analysis on the magnetic field and temperature of the two main factors was given and the best working conditions were obtained. Hereby experiment was planned and at last a small-scale device was made.

Abstract:Due to the gradient of the phase shift as the wavelength in the reflection and transmission, the optical thin films coatings will present the spatial dispersion effect. The new kinds of super-prism thin film devices can be realized by well design interference effect inside of multilayer films to get the super-dispersion. The positive and negative spatial dispersion are existed in side of coatings, and is very sensitive to the angle of incident and wavelength. The analysis methods and the different kinds of spatial dispersion thin film filter devices and tunable spatial dispersion filter devices are presented in the paper.

Abstract:We propose a Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) based on a rare-earth ion doped crystal. We present theoretical analyses for the solid-state FADOF transmission. Our theoretical model predicts a maximum transmission efficiency of 71% and a double-peaked transmission spectrum with a bandwidth of 6 GHz under current experimental conditions. Our proposal may have important applications in optical communications.

Abstract:Reflection-type thin film demultiplexers are interesting for optical communication, detection and some other fields. In this work a novel thin film reflection filter is proposed to obtain a large spatial dispersion with high efficiency. Based on the abnormal reflective phase change, the reflected beam will be shifted spatially as a function of wavelength. The numerical simulation of the distribution of reflected light is investigated by a transfer matrix, along with the Gaussian angular spectrum method. A thin film sample is fabricated and tested, and the experimental results found to be in good agreement with numerical simulation.

Abstract:A near infrared potassium Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter was theoretically studied for the transition, including hyperfine ef fects. In the paper the Zeeman splittings of potassium were calculate d for the given transition, that is, diagonalizing the disturbed matri x, and finding out the Zeeman sublevels position and transition freque ncies. Next we obtain an expression for the bulk polarizability tensor . Finally we acquire the transition coefficient relating to the polari zability tensor. The effect of temperature and magnetic field on prope rties of Faraday optical filter were investigated. The optimum filter operating condition was also obtained. The single peak bandwidth of th e optical filter is about 0.86GHz, equivalent noise band width is 2.4G Hz. The transmission is approximately 94.1 percent under the optimum c ondit ion.

Abstract:We report an excited-state Faraday anomalous-dispersion optical filter operating on the rubidium 5P(3/2)-5D(5/2) transition (775.9 nm in vacuum) without the use of a pump laser. An electrodeless discharge vapor lamp is employed to replace the Rb vapor cell in a traditional Faraday anomalous-dispersion optical filter system. Atoms can be excited by power rather than a complex frequency-locked pump laser. A proof-of-concept experimental demonstration with a maximum transmission of 1.9% and a filter bandwidth of 650 MHz is presented.

Abstract:Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filters (FADOFs) were used in laser frequency locking experiment as early as 1969, and later this laser was named Faraday laser. Typically, as the key element in the Faraday laser, the housing for the FADOF is machined from metal and insulation material. Here, we present an alternative to the commonly used option that utilizes 3D printing. We measure the inner magnetic field intensity of the housing for the FADOF and the transmission spectrum of our FADOF system, and show that it is sufficient for use in Faraday laser. Besides, we also characterize the performance of our Faraday laser system using atomic spectroscopy. The performance and cost of 3Dprinted FADOF housing make it an appealing option.

Abstract:The Sr Faraday dispersion optical filter at 460.7 nm in Fraunhofer dip was analyzed. The filtering properties of the filter at line wing and central operation were analysed respectively. The influence of magnetic field, temperature and cell length on the filter operation was discussed. Under the best operation conditions the transmission at line centre is up to 95%, and bandwidth is about 1.47 GHz.

Abstract:The position shifts of the reflective beam, from the thin film filter have been investigated, as the change of incident light wavelength. Not only positive beam shift exits in the common superprism effect of thin film coatings, we have found that the negative beam shift is also exited in the thin films coatings. The mechanism of the spatial dispersion of the reflective light from the thin film F-P filter was analyzed, and the experimental results were used to prove them. The potential application of the negative and positive spatial dispersion is presented in the report.

Abstract:The domestic and international development of Na-FADOF was summarized. The transmission of Na-FADOF was calculated using Fortran computer language. The influence of the parameters on the transmission was studied. The calculation is in good agreement with the published experimental result. The theoretical calculation shows that the bandwidth of Na-FADOF is 0.0002 nm and the maximal transmission is 100%.

Abstract:This paper discusses in detail the effect of magnetic field on the filtering behaviour of potassium D-2 line FADOF when the working temperature and the length of the cell are fixed. Abstract:A narrow linewidth Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) with reflection configuration is achieved for the first time based on the cesium (Cs) ground state 6S1/2 to the excited state 6P3/2 transition at 852 nm. Compared with the conventional FADOF with transmission configuration, reflection-type FADOF can greatly improve the transmittance of optical filter under the same experimental parameters, because it allows signal light to go and return through the atomic vapor cell. In our experiment, peak transmittance at Cs 6S1/2 F = 4–6P3/2 transition is 81% for the reflection-type FADOF, and while 54% for the transmission-type FADOF when the temperature of Cs vapor cell and the axial magnetic field are 60 °C and 19 G. The idea of this reflection-type FADOF design has the potential to be applied to the FADOF operating between two excited states to obtain higher transmittance.

Abstract:The transmission spectrum of Voigt anomalous dispersion optical filter (VADOF) corresponds to atomic transition lines and VADOF has a smaller size and simpler structure than Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF). We investigate the transmission spectrum of VADOF under different magnetic fields, temperatures and laser intensities. The results show that as the magnetic field increases, the transmittance of VAODF transmission spectrum decreases. At low temperatures, the transmittance of VAODF transmission spectrum becomes larger with the increase of temperature. With the increase of laser intensity, the transmission spectrum of VAODF becomes smoother, and the number of peaks becomes fewer. VADOF can be used as a frequency-selective element to build external-cavity diode lasers (ECDLs), which automatically align the laser frequency to the atomic transition lines and are more compact than Faraday lasers.

Abstract:In this work, a detailed theoretical analysis of 1529 nm ES-FADOF (excited state Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter) based on rubidium atoms pumped by 780 nm laser is introduced, where Zeeman splitting, Doppler broadening, and relaxation processes are considered. Experimental results are carefully compared with the derivation. The results prove that the optimal pumping frequency is affected by the working magnetic field. The population distribution among all hyperfine Zeeman sublevels under the optimal pumping frequency has also been obtained, which shows that Rb-85 atoms are the main contribution to the population. The peak transmittance above 90% is obtained, which is in accordance with the experiment. The calculation also shows that the asymmetric spectra observed in the experiment are caused by the unbalanced population distribution among Zeeman sublevels. This theoretical model can be used for all kinds of calculations for FADOF. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The direct pump method now used in excited state Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filters (ES-FADOFs) requires that the transition between the target and the ground state is an electric dipole allowed transition and that a laser that operates at the exact pump wavelength is available. This is not always satisfied in practice. An indirect laser pump method for ES-FADOF is proposed and experimentally realized. Compared with the commonly used direct pump method, this indirect pump method can reach the same performance using lasers at very different wavelengths. This method can greatly extend the wavelength range of FADOF and provide a novel scheme for ES-FADOF design.

Abstract:An ultra-narrow bandwidth potassium Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) at the D/sub 2/ line is studied theoretically and experimentally. The effect of temperature on the characteristics of the potassium Faraday filter is discussed and the transmission versus temperature is given. Our research results show that the transmission of the K-FADOF reaches nearly 90% with a bandwidth of only 1.5 GHz. To meet different requirements, K-FADOF can operate at line-center or in the line-wing by changing the working parameters.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce by far the most promising schemes to realize excited state atomic filter. Excited state Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (ES-FADOF) with direct pumping, as the traditional method, provides a very direct way, while ES-FADOF with indirect pumping, as proposed very recently, provides much more choices. Moreover, induced dichroism excited state atomic line filter can provide much narrower bandwidth but lower transmittance. Based on the requirement of specific applications, different methods should be used.

Abstract:A Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) with a single transmission peak is achieved by using a buffer-gas (argon, 2 Torr)-filled rubidium cell. At room temperature, the transmission is 0.2% and the bandwidth of the transmission peak is 0.65 GHz. At a temperature of 63° C, the transmission rises to a maximum of 30.6%, with a bandwidth of 1.41 GHz. This FADOF may replace the use of interference filters or virtually imaged phased arrays in imaging modalities.

Abstract:We demonstrate an 852-nm external cavity diode laser (ECDL) system whose wavelength is mainly determined by an interference filter instead of other wavelength selective elements. The Lorentzian linewidth measured by the heterodyne beating between two identical lasers is 28.3 kHz. Moreover, we test the application of the ECDL in the Faraday atomic filter. Besides saturated absorption spectrum, the transmission spectrum of the Faraday atomic filter at 852 nm is measured by using the ECDL. This interference filter ECDL method can also be extended to other wavelengths and widen the application range of diode laser.
