Abstract:Along with the development of high energy or high power lasers,especially laser weapon and lasers for controlled nuclear fusion,the laser induced damage threshold of the optical films gradually becomes the bottleneck against the development of the lasers,which is of considerable interest from the world.Laser induced damage mechanism of optical films,test flat and method for laser induced damage threshold were expatiated.The development of researches on the technologies and methods for laser damage resistance of optical films at home and abroad,which included ion beam pretreatment,ion beam or anneal treat-ment,pretest coating with the materials of high refractive index and so on,were analyzed.The pulsed laser deposition with mag-netic filter technology was emphasized in the expectation,and the atom layer deposition was advised to accelerate to develop, which supplied the theoretic base to improve the laser damage resistance of optical films to settle for current requirements.

Abstract:The study on the mechanism of laser ablated cells is of importance to laser surgery and killing harmful cells. Three radiation modes were researched on the ablation characteristics of onion epidermal cells under: laser direct irradiation, focused irradiation and the laser plasma radiation. Based on the thermodynamic properties of the laser irradiation, the cell temperature rise and phase change have been analyzed. The experiments show that the cells damage under direct irradiation is not obvious at all, but the focused irradiation can cause cells to split and moisture removal. The removal shape is circular with larger area and rough fracture edges. The theoretical analysis found out that the laser plasma effects play a key role in the laser ablation. The thermal effects, radiation ionization and shock waves can increase the deposition of laser pulses energy and impact peeling of the cells, which will greatly increase the scope and efficiency of cell killing and is suitable for the cell destruction.

Abstract:We experimentally investigated the morphology and mechanism of laser-induced damage in the ablation cutting of thin glass sheets with picosecond pulsed lasers and we compared the experimental results to our models. After several passes of laser ablation, we observed two different kinds of damage morphologies on the cross-section of the cut channel. They are distinguished to be the damage region caused by high-density free-electrons and the heat-affected zone due to the heat accumulation, respectively. Furthermore, micro-cracks can be observed on the top surface of the workpiece near the cut edge. The nano-cracks could be generated by high energy free-electrons but opened and developed to be visible micro-cracks by thermal stress generated in the heat-affected zone. The crack length was proportional to the volume of heat-affected zone. Heat-affected-zone and visible-cracks free conditions of glass cutting were achieved by controlling the repetition rate and spatial overlap of laser pulses.

Abstract:Laser irradiation in conjunction with surface cooling,called Low Invasive Laser Coagulation (LILC),provides a promising therapy for superficial cancer,which can cauterize the inner tissue with the tissue surface undamaged.In order to provide a further insight into this therapy,this paper developed a transient finite difference numerical model of the LILC method. It was then used to simulate the light propagation and heat transfer inside the tissue. The effects of various optical coefficients (such as scattering and absorption coefficients,anisotropy parameter,etc.) and thermophysical properties (such as surface convective coefficient,etc.) and physiological coefficients (such as blood perfusion rate and metabolic heat generation,etc.) on the thermal behavior of the LILC method were discussed in detail. The results show that the size and location of cauterized tissue under the skin can be bontrolled by properly adjusting the absorption and scattering coefficients and irradiation power and so on.

Abstract:A laser correlation study of irradiation damage is carried out on the basis of anodized functional films with the aim of improving the stray light absorptivity in the framework of high-energy laser systems and reducing the contamination of the system after irradiation damage. An experimental study is performed to investigate the effect of different laser characteristics (wavelength, spot diameter, energy and incident angle) on the damage of functional films. On this basis, the damage evolution process was analyzed using ABAQUS secondary development and was in good agreement with the experimental results. In addition, the damage mechanism of the film system is discussed. This study can provide guidance for the optimization of the functional film system, as well as a reference for the design of the main optical path of the high-energy laser system.

Abstract:Low-temperature plasma ablation has been recently used for minimally invasive surgeries. However, more research is still needed on its generation process during tissue ablation and the underlying mechanism of tissue thermal damage. In this paper, high-speed camera footage, voltage-current signal collection, temperature analysis, and histological analysis were used to investigate the dynamic process of plasma tissue ablation and its thermal effect of dual-needle electrodes immersed in normal saline, which were driven by a high-frequency DC power supply with an output voltage ranging from 220V to 320V and a squire wave of 100kHz. Microbubbles occurred around the ground electrode and merged to form a vapor layer that could completely cover the ground electrode. Plasma capable of ablating tissue would occur in the vapor layer between the ground electrode and tissue. The effect of electrical parameters on plasma generation and its thermal effect are analyzed by statistical results. The experimental results indicated that the voltage applied to the electrodes significantly influenced both the generation and stability of plasma, as well as the heat generation and tissue damage around the electrodes. Furthermore, under the same voltage, the existence of biological tissue promotes the formation of a vapor layer around the electrode, thereby facilitating the generation and stability of plasma. Notably, the temperature rise around the ground electrode is much higher than that around the powered electrode. These results have direct application to the design of plasma tissue ablation systems, which could achieve tissue ablation effects with minimal thermal damage.

Abstract:In this study, a numerical model is used to study the mechanism of laser ablation for space debris removal. The model couples the physical processes involved in laser ablation, including the heating, melting and evaporation of target (i.e. Aluminum), the formation of plume and plasma, and plasma shielding. Validation of the model is performed by comparing the simulated impulse density and impulse coupling coefficient with experimental data, showing the availability of the model in accurately describing the processes involved in laser ablation for removing space debris. The effects of laser irradiance, wavelength and pulse width on laser ablation were systematically studied by the model. In addition, the continuous laser ablation is explored and the effect of the laser pulse time interval is demonstrated. The results show that laser irradiation and pulse width have a significant impact on laser ablation, while the impact of wavelength is much smaller compared to the former two. In addition, using two short duration laser ablation instead of a long duration can significantly improve the impulse density obtained by the target and the corresponding impulse coupling coefficient, but the time interval between two laser pulses should not be too long.

Abstract:Laser-induced damage of germanium (Ge) sheets plays a key role to explore the laser irradiation effect with the development of high-power laser and precision machining technology. However, the impact of plasma evolution on the damage mechanism is still a lack of detailed analysis for Ge sheet. Here, we investigate the change of the morphology and size of the plasma plume and compare it with the damage morphology of Ge sheets versus the laser pulse number in air and vacuum conditions. The plasma plume area reveals a gradual increase and then a slow decrease trend in the air and the final damage morphology is a shallow concavity. Instead, it reveals a fast rise and fall trend in the vacuum and the final morphology is a complete breakdown pit. The damage process of Ge sheet is divided into the initial damage, developmental damage, breakdown damage and stable damage according to the morphological changes of scattering light. The plasma shielding effect and thermal ablation play a more important role in formation of the damage morphology in the air, and the plasma shock wave and thermo-mechanical stress dominate the damage morphology in the vacuum. The significant contrasts and the combined experimental and theoretical works provide an insight into the laser irradiation effect and material degradation behavior, hence broaden the potential application of Ge sheets in laser micro/nano-fabrication.

Abstract:The use of lasers in medical applications has dramatically increased over the past half century. For treatment quality, the control of thermal damage is absolutely necessary. Living tissue is highly non-homogenous, and the effect of local non-equilibrium on the thermal behavior should be accounted. Therefore, this work uses the dual-phase-lag model to analyze thermal response for estimating thermal damage in laser-irradiated biological tissue. The transport behavior of laser light in the tissue is assumed as highly absorbed and strongly scattered, respectively. Thermal damage is assessed with the rate process equation. The effects of blood perfusion and metabolic heat generation on thermal response and thermal damage are explored. The reliability of the present results has been evidenced through comparison with the literature. The results show the DPL bio-heat transfer equation with the effect of blood perfusion, even with the space-dependent source term, can be reduced to the Fourier bio-heat transfer equation for τq=τT.

Abstract:In laser application systems, the optical film is one of the most important parts of the system, as well as its weakest link. Its damage performance determines the output characteristics and safety performance of the laser system. This paper focuses on the fundamental frequency reflection of dielectric films used in large high-powered laser devices. The study of the dielectric film’s initial laser damage performance and laser damage growth performance is carried out through laser damage testing and microscopic morphology testing of the damage. The results show two different damage morphologies: type 1 damage (film discoloration damage) and type 2 damage (cratered damage), and the damage growth behavior between the two is very different, with type 1 damage not growing and type 2 damage growing rapidly under subsequent episodes that trigger their damage fluxes. The difference in the growth behavior is well explained by the micro-zone surface shape of the damage location. The results of this paper help to deepen the understanding of the dielectric membrane element processing process and the damage growth behavior.

Abstract:Based on the photodisruption effect,there is a new method of selective abortion,which is used the pulse laser focused on the internal embryo directly.Due to the effects of photodisruption the heart of embryo is damaged,and then the embryo will death rapidly.The adjustable pulsed laser with wavelength 1 064 nm,pulse width 6 ns and pulse energy 60~96 mJ is used to act on the cow muscle tissue samples,and Optical Coherence Tomography(OCT) system is measured the damage sizes of samples.The model between the laser parameters and the damage sizes of samples is established.The relation between the damage sizes and the energy of laser pulse is positive correlation,however which with the frequency of laser pulse is negative correlation.This result can help to optimize the laser parameters which used in the selective abortion surgery.

Abstract:Comprehension of biological tissue ablation by short laser pulses in a broad optical spectrum is of fundamental importance to the understanding of laser-tissue interaction and advancing surgical applications of lasers. We report a new plasma ablation model in which the chromophore ionization pathway is incorporated to explain the skin tissue ablation by nanosecond laser pulses from ultraviolet to near-infrared. A rate equation is solved to examine the effects of chromophore, cascade, and multiphoton ionization on the optical breakdown of the tissue. The wavelength and spot size dependence of the breakdown thresholds have been measured and agreements have been found between the calculated and measured results.

Abstract:The influences of surface impurities, etching time, subsurface defects and the width to depth ratio on the laser damage threshold of fused silica optics in the traditional grinding and polishing process are systematically analyzed by laser damage experiments. Results show that the laser damage thresholds are 21. 6J/cm2 and 11. 28J/cm2 for wiped and non-wiped optics, respectively. The laser damage threshold is greatly reduced by the surface impurities, while the laser damage threshold at the defect area is significantly lower than that at no defect area. The increase of the etching time increases the surface roughness and defect size of the workpiece, which leads to a significant decrease in the laser damage threshold of the optics, so a reasonable choice of chemical etching time is required. The incident light field can be modulated by subsurface defects, resulting in local area reflected light, scattered light and incident light superimposed on each other, eventually leading to laser damage of optical material. The width to depth ratio of the scratch increases with the etching time, which can gradually weaken the scratch on the light field modulation, thereby the probability of occurrence of laser damage for fused silica optics is reduced.

Abstract:Laser plasma propulsion in glass-layer confined ablation was experimentally investigated. The results showed that compared to that of direct ablation, the coupling coefficient was enhanced over ten times. By observing the plasma expansion and calculating the ablation pressure, it was found that a higher ablation pressure and larger glass mass resulted in a higher coupling coefficient in the confined laser ablation.
