Abstract:MPEG-4 is leading the compression of multimedia application into the fruitful future for it's affluent functions to support universal access and high performance compression[2]. But two excellent standard-compliant streams, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 video, will be coexisting in different systems for a long time. This paper addresses the problems of transcoding MPEG-2 video to MPEG-4 compliant bitstream in compression domain to meet low complexity and low latency real-time application. The key issue about macroblock coding mode mismatch in transcoding processing will be discussed in detail. The reported simulation results authenticate the performance of the proposed transcoding algorithm in both objective and subjective quality.

Abstract:MPEG-4 is applied to varieties of current and future multimedia applications. The standard not only supports existed frame-based coding standards such as MPEG-1, MTEG-2 or H.263, but also provides content-based representation and flexible toolbox, which lead to MPEG-4 more complicated. This paper first briefly presents the implementation method of the video decoding of MPEG-4 Core Visual Profile, which is a subset of MPEG-4 standard. The Core Visual Profile is quite suitable to streaming video, which will possibly become the hot spot for the development of MPEG-4. Then, the paper proposes a design scheme for the basic hardware structure of the decoding system based on TMS320C6X DSP, and simply analyzes the decoding processing of the system.

Abstract:MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 are two most popular international video compression standards. They will coexist in different systems and networks for a long time. For compatibility of these two video standards, this paper put forward three transcoding algorithms on the basis of detailed analysis of computational complexity. In the paper, the principle and implementation of two efficient transcoding algorithms are emphasized. Both of them are tradeoff between the computational complexity and reconstructed video quality. One is motion-information reusing algorithm, which meets the highest video quality requirement of studio and post-processing environments. The other is real-time low complexity transcoding algorithm, which is proper for low delay requirement of the network server and user terminal with limited computational performance. The simulation results of many test sequences verified the high performance of the algorithms.
H.264/AVC baseline profile decoder optimization on independent platform

Abstract:In this paper, a real-time H.264/AVC baseline profile decoder is implemented on independent platform. Computationally intensive modules in the reference decoder are optimized for various hardware platforms. Especially, a fast group-based CAVLC entropy decoding algorithm is provided in detail, and several strategies are discussed from software optimization opinion. The experiments show that the speed of our developed software-based decoder is 3 times faster than that of the H.264/AVC reference decoder. The maximum decoding speed of 74 fps for CIF sequence is achieved on Intel Pentium 4 processor, with the same video quality as the reference decoder. © 2005 IEEE.

Abstract:MPEG-4,as one of the most promising and advanced compression standard,will be leading the video transmission, storage,and edition applications in the coming future. But two excellent standard-compliant streams,MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 video, will be coexisting in different systems for a long time. This paper addresses the issues of transcoding MPEG-2 video to MPEG-4 compliant bitstream in compression domain to meet low complexity and low latency real-time application. The key issue about macroblock coding mode mismatch in transcoding processing will be discussed in detail. The reported simulation results testified that the proposed transcoding algorithm could not only convert MPEG-2 stream to MPEG-4 steam effectively, but also retrieve or conceal the mismatched macroblock robustly,which will improve the perceptual quality greatly.

Abstract:In order to improve the efficiency of the MPEG-4 advanced audio coding(AAC) decoding procedure,software optimization technology was proposed for implementation of MPEG-4 AAC low complexity profile audio decoding on general-purpose 32-bit reduced instruction set computing(RISC).The decoding procedure was divided into bitstream decoding section and computation section.Hierarchical memory architecture was applied to accelerate bitstream decoding,and the decoding efficiency of computation section was improved by the software optimization which was implemented based on the processes,targets of computation and multiply operations.Great decoding efficiency was achieved with the result of decoding stereo audio in real time at the maximum processor speed of 35 MHz.

Abstract:The emergence of H.264/AVC video compression standard provides better support functions for wireless network. The characteristics of limited bandwidth, high error rate of wireless channel and the constraints of computing and storage capacity of most mobile devices make the key technology of video codec in error resilience strategies, rate control, mode decision and scalable extension more important. In this paper, we first analyze the main and popular strategies in the key technology, and then we propose a method to choose and combine these strategies to validate the results and performance by experiment. Experiment shows the rational use of these technologies improves the quality of video transmission and provides reference for the video service evaluation.

Abstract:This paper presents an intra-frame coding mode decision algorithm for MPEG-4 to H.264/AVC transcoding in integer transform domain. The edge direction inside a block is estimated in the integer transform domain to reduce candidate prediction modes. Based on the analysis of the variance of the sixteen subblock DC coefficients inside a macroblock, “transition interval” and “double thresholds” intra prediction size selection are proposed to reduce wrong judgments. According to statistical results of high probability of neighboring blocks having the same intra prediction mode, a decision rule is given to predict the coding mode of the current block from its neighbors. The proposed transcoding algorithm can reduce computation time by more than 75% comparing with the pixel domain cascaded intra-frame transcoder, while maintains similar picture quality and bitrate.

Abstract:In this paper an optimized implementation of real-time MPEG4 encoder based on TMS320DM642 DSP of Texas Instruments, Inc. is presented. The optimization techniques include algorithm optimization and data memory access efficiency in order to reduce the complexity and improve the software parallelism. Currently, the encoder can deal with the CIF video sequence at about 25 f/s.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a system-on-chip software hardware co-design for a statistical decoder. We use the context-based adaptive binary arithmetic decoder (CABAC decoder) used in the High profile of the H.264/AVC video coding standard as a design example. The design is aimed to strike a balance between software modules and hardware modules based on design constraints. It is capable of decoding one bin per clock cycle at high clock frequencies while maintaining a slim hardware footprint. Compared to existing statistical decoders, this design is aimed for a fast and compact IP core, well verified with standard video test sequence, and ideal for a SoC implementation.

Abstract:MPEG-4 visual simple profile is a widely used video compression standard for mobile solutions. In general, MPEG-4 video decoder requires high computation power for its complex algorithms. It's difficult to implement MPEG-4 video decoder on hand-held devices directly. In this paper, we proposed a novel color space transform algorithm and optimized the memory access operations. Moreover, the multiperless integer IDCT is adopted to further speed up the decoder. Our optimization is based on ARM7TDMI and ARM920T, which are very desirable cores to mobile solutions for low power consumption. Experimental results show that the optimized decoder acts about 5 times faster than existing XVID MPEG-4 video decoder with small video quality degradation and supports real-time video applications.

Abstract:H.264/AVC is the current video standardization project of the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). H.264/AVC represents a major step forward in the development of video coding standards. In this paper, the authors briefly introduced a technical overview of H.264/AVC standard and proposed the related coding tools. At the last section, the authors compared the H.264/AVC standard with other prior coding standards. The results show that H.264/AVC standard will enable new applications and business opportunities to be developed.

Abstract:This paper proposes a high performance 4-stage pipelined VLSI architecture of H.264/AVC CABAC decoder based on four sequential memory accesses. Through adoption of several speeding techniques such as redundant circuit and forwarding to eliminate the pipeline hazards, the parallelism among the interrelated decoding process has been fully exploited and the pipeline stalls are avoided. Additionally, by exploring parallelism in bypass mode, the proposed design decodes two successive bins in each cycle. Experimental result shows that the proposed architecture can achieve the throughput of more than 1 bin/cycle which meets the real time decoding requirement of HD1080i (1920x1088) video.

Abstract:This paper introduces the work of optimizing real-time MPEG-4 decoder based on i.250(ARM7 platform)produced by Freescale company.We realize Mpeg-4 decoder with arithmetic,C-language and ARM optimization method,according to the i.250 architecture.The results indicate that we have successfully realized real-time MPEG-4 decoder base on the mobile phone platform using i.250.The decoding rate is higher than the dominate products in the market.The low-cost mobile phone products using optimized MPEG-4 decoder will entere the market via corporation with company.

Abstract:A mixed hardware/software architecture for CABAC decoding in H.264/AVC is proposed in this paper. For the purpose of flexibility, ctxldx calculation process is implemented by software, while others are implemented by hardware. An optimized parallel decoding architecture that allows decoding two binary symbols at one clock cycle is designed to enhance overall decoding performance. An efficient scheme of accessing context models is presented. Experimental results show that the proposed architecture improves the decoding performance by 20% compared to conventional scheme. The proposed design can achieve HDTV 1080i video processing requirement when operated at 140 MHz.
