Abstract:Wideband digital phased array radar is a promising technology to monitor ocean environment.It can realize wide sea area,multi targets and high precision sea area monitoring.The key component of wideband digital phased array radar is digital RF transceiver chips.This paper briefly introduces the development and technology of integrated digital RF transceiver chips.In this paper,we discuss and analyze several key technical problems.The analysis results suggest that broadband digital phased array radar could be the best candidate for the next generation ocean surveillance.

Abstract:The digital RF phase detector based on commercial PXI modules for the linac is fully described in the paper. The DBM is used as the phase detector and its control and data acquisition system is based on the PXI bus. The software adopts a curve fitting algorithm. The prototype has been tested in the laboratory and the good resolution and accuracy, good reproducibility and reliability are expected.

Abstract:A system design of a Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS) based radar signal generator is presented. The DDS technique has its inherent disadvantage in noise and spurious suppression, due to the all-digital structure. To overcome these disadvantages, we apply two efiective methods of a 3-order low-pass Butterworth fllter and the pre-distortion technique to greatly enhance the system performance. Microwave Remote Sensing (MRS) has become a targeted area of intensive research for its great application in diverse situations. Early MRS radar signal generators are analog devices with high- cost, short life, low reliability and low precision. At present, due to the advance of high-speed Very Large Scale Integrated Circuit (VLSI), the technique of Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS) is being widely used to synthesize complex waveforms for applications in MRS. DDS makes it easy to precisely control and adjust the frequency, amplitude and phase of the required Chirp signals that are widely used in MRS. However, DDS technique has its inherent disadvantages in noise and spurious suppression, due to its all-digital structure. This paper presents a system design of a DDS signal generator for MRS. Besides, we put forward two methods to improve the spectrum purity. The flrst one is to design a low-pass fllter to improve the SNR, and the second one is to employ the pre-distortion method to make spectrum within band much ∞atter.

Abstract:In recent years, optically controlled phased array radar has been widely used because of its high radiation power, flexible beam steering and anti-electromagnetic interference, but the radar system based on discrete devices is still plagued by the problems of large size, high power consumption and complex control method. In this paper, we propose a two-dimensional integrated optical true time delay network (OTTDN), which has the abilities of real-time monitoring and adjustment. The delay network is implemented with silicon-based adjustable optical delay chip. The chip contains four-channel delay lines with different steps to achieve more compact volume, which can realize 128 x 4 kinds of delay amount, but the size is only 5.7 x 15.8 mm(2) and the power consumption of all chip is 4.32 W. The results of delay chip measurement show that the maximum delay mean error is -0.55 ps, and the maximum root mean square error (RMSE) is 0.80 ps in four-channel. Based on these delay results, the pointing error of array antenna is less than 0.5 degrees in the frequency of 3 GHz. If a power division structure is added to the RF front-end, this network can also be used in multi-beam systems, whose beams can be controlled independently at the same time.

A 24-Ghz Low-Cost Continuous Beam Steering Phased Array for Indoor Smart Radar

Abstract:A 24-GHz phased array for indoor smart radar is proposed in this paper. This array consists of 6 horizontally placed antenna elements. Each antenna element is a vertically placed 5-element series-fed microstrip patch array. The beam of the phased array can be continuously steered on the H-plane to different directions through a novel vector control array. Each element of the vector control array can adjust the phase and amplitude of the corresponding element of the horizontally placed linear array. The whole phased array system is fabricated on a single printed circuit board (PCB). PIN diodes are used to realize beam steering by modulating the decomposed received signal. In order to compensate for the loss of the vector control array and reduce the noise figure, six low noise amplifiers (LNAs) are also used in the array. This proposed phased array system features a lower cost than conventional solutions based on phase shifters. The principle of the proposed vector control array is discussed, and simulation shows this system has the ability to continuously steer the beam on the H-plane.

Abstract:The development of millimeter-wave phased array based on the digital beamforming architecture needs to overcome a physical-level challenge due to the contradiction between the massively integrated TR devices and the compact volume for thermal dissipation. In this work, we demonstrate an analog beamforming solution based on a reconfigurable Fresnel-zone-plate (RFZP) antenna for 28-GHz phased array. The proposed RFZP including 16x8 unit cells based on active frequency selective surface (FSS) with varactor diodes to implement a continuous 180 degrees phase tunability. The measured scan ranges up to +/- 50 degrees and +/- 30 degrees at horizontal plane and vertical plane, respectively. The proposed RFZP antenna is an attractive solution for millimeter-wave beamforming.

Abstract:The state-of-the-art phased array-based digital beamforming systems suffer from disadvantages of high power consumption, high cost, and system complexity due to the massive use of transmitter/receiver (T/R) modules and high-speed digital and digital-analog mixed devices. In this paper, we point out that by proposing a new concept “complex domain” radio frequency (RF) frontend, the relatively slowly changed waveform delay information required to accomplish adaptive beamforming can be separated from wideband RF signals, based on which a self-contained beamforming system can be implemented with a low-speed baseband. By introducing vector RF multipliers in the proposed frontend, the amplitude and phase of RF signals can be simultaneously controlled by the real and imaginary parts of complex numbers, such that beamforming algorithms derived in complex domain can be directly applied without any form of transformation. By doing so, the massive use of conventional T/R modules and high-speed baseband devices can be avoided. Theoretical analysis and experimental demonstration based on commercial components have validated the proposed approach. Our method is able to significantly simplify the realization and decrease the cost of wideband digital beamforming systems, and can be widely used in low cost, power efficient beamforming applications.

Abstract:The central element of a phased array antenna that performs beam electrical scanning, as well as signal transmission and reception, is the transceiver (T/R) module. Higher standards have been set for the integration, volume, power consumption, stability, and environmental adaptability of T/R modules due to the increased operating frequency of phased array antennas, the variability of application platforms, and the diversified development of system functions. Device-based multichannel T/R modules are the key to realizing low-profile Ka-band phased array antenna microsystem architecture. The design and implementation of a low-profile, high-performance, and highly integrated Ka-band phased array antenna T/R module are examined in this paper. Additionally, a dependable Ka-band four-channel T/R module based on Si/GaAs/Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic (LTCC), applying multi-material heterogeneous integration architecture, is proposed and fabricated. The chip architecture, transceiver link, LTCC substrates, interconnect interface, and packaging are all taken into consideration when designing the T/R module. When compared to a standard phased array antenna, the module's profile shrunk from 40 mm to 8 mm, and its overall dimensions are only 10.8 mm × 10 mm × 3 mm. It weighs 1 g, and with the same specs, the single channel volume was reduced by 95%. The T/R module has an output power of ≥26 dBm for single-channel transmission, an efficiency of ≥25%, and a noise factor of ≤4.4 dB. When compared to T/R modules based on System-on-Chip (SOC) devices, the RF performance has significantly improved, as seen by an increase in single channel output power and a decrease in the receiving noise factor. This work lays a foundation for the devitalization and engineering application of T/R modules in highly reliable application scenarios.

Abstract:This brief describes a time-to-digital converter (TDC)-based digital-intensive beamforming method that is insensitive to analog delay mismatches. For vital sign detection, the proposed architecture can perform either vector summation (beamforming) or scalar summation (beamsumming) in the digital domain by simply weighting or removing the direct-current term for each channel, thus not requiring analog delay circuits. A prototype four-channel radar receiver that utilizes a digital phase tracking circuit and a 1-bit delta-sigma TDC is implemented in the 0.18-mu m CMOS. The digital-intensive receiver consumes 33.2 mW/channel from a 1.8-V supply and successfully demonstrates spatial selectivity and signal-to-noise-ratio enhancement.

Abstract:In this article, a hybrid radar configuration for automotive radar applications is proposed, with the system architecture, design, and measured results reported. The hybrid radar system consists of a vertically distributed phased transmitting array (PTA) and a horizontally aligned digital beamforming (DBF) receiving array, thereby enabling 2-D beam scanning with a reduced channel number. In contrast to time-division multiplexing (TDM) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radars, in which only a single transmitter is active at a time in the TDM MIMO radar configuration due to the working principle of switching between different transmitting elements, here, all the phased array transmitters of the proposed radar work simultaneously. The demonstrated system realizes a higher transmitted power and signal-to-noise ratio, provided that the equivalent isotropically radiated power (EIRP) is not limited and the radiated power of each transmitter is equal in these two radar configurations. In addition, only 1-D DBF is required for the proposed hybrid radar because beamforming in another dimension is accomplished by the PTA, thus alleviating the baseband complexity and signal processing burden. As a proof-of-concept example for system validation, a hybrid radar prototype is fabricated and measured at around 24 GHz, without considering any specific EIRP limitations in this band, thus confirming the validity of the proposed concept.

Abstract:This paper presents a fully integrated S-band T/R ICfor phased array radar applications using 0.13μm SOI-CMOS technology. It integrates all functional blocks in a traditional T/R module, i.e., T/R switch, absorptive power limiter and low noise amplifier (LNA), balanced power amplifier (PA), 6-bit digitally controlled step attenuator (DSA) and phase shifter (PS) and digital control interface. It also integrates power detector for self-diagnosis and second harmonic rejection filter for electromagnetic compliance. Itdraws 1.8A and achieves 31.5dBm peak output power in transmit (TX)mode and draws 0.12A and achieves noise figure (NF) of 2.5dB in receive (RX) mode respectively, with a single 3.3V power supply. The IC only occupies an area of 5.4*5.4mm 2 .
A 4TX/4RX Pulsed Chirping Phased-Array Radar Transceiver in 65-nm CMOS for X-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar Application

Abstract:A pulsed chirping phased-array transceiver (TRX) is demonstrated for X-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) application. The phased-array TRX is implemented on a single CMOS chip with beamsteering/beamforming capabilities. The chip-scale radar TRX is composed of four transmitters (TXs) and four receivers (RXs) operating at 10-GHz center frequency with 1-GHz bandwidth (BW). To achieve the wideband beamsteering with a fine angle step, the two-stage delay control in the TX is proposed, where a delay-locked loop (DLL) -based multi-phase synthesizer (MPS) is used to control the coarse true-time delay of the baseband chirp, and the active phase shifters (PS) in radio frequency (RF) path are used for fine phase tuning. Fabricated in a 65-nm CMOS technology, the TRX consumes 228 mW for each channel at a 1.2-V supply, delivering ~10.2-dBm power with <1.3-dB ripple. The delay-line test shows that the dechirped signal achieves −13-dB peak-to-sidelobe ratio (PSLR) and the phase coherence error is within ±1.2° at a chirp rate of 1 MHz/ $mu text{s}$ . The prototype phased-array radar TRX chip is demonstrated with the antenna arrays consisting of Vivaldi antennas of 8-dBi gain, 6-GHz BW, and 6-cm pitch distance. Experiments indicate that beamsteering/beamforming up to ±60° with a step of ~1° is achieved. SAR imaging experiment is carried out based on both the two-stage beamsteering in the TXs and the digital beamforming in the RXs, proving the capability of the prototype phased-array radar TRX chip for the SAR imaging applications.

Abstract:A novel, to the best of our knowledge, scheme for reconfigurable radar signal generation is proposed based on the principle of photonic phase-quantized digital-to-analog conversion. Multi-level digital phase modulation with different modulation depths is combined to convert multi-channel digital data to the phase of an optical carrier. Frequency-modulated or phase-modulated radar signals are generated by beating the phase-synthesized optical carrier with a coherent reference light. The proposed radar signal generator features a simple structure, highly reconfigurable modulation format, and flexibly tunable frequency. A 3-bit photonic phase-quantized digital-to-analog converter with a 10-GSa/s sampling rate is constructed experimentally. The generation of linear frequency-modulated, nonlinear frequency-modulated, frequency-stepped, frequency-hopping, binary phase-coded, and polyphase-coded waveforms is demonstrated.

Abstract:Digital arrays for radar applications are becoming more common as researchers seek to capitalize on the advantages of digital beamforming, and RF System on Chip (RFSoC) technology matures. Calibrating these digital array radars (DAR) presents new challenges. Primarily, the entire system, from the array face to the digital backend, must be tested as a single unit on these highly integrated designs. Rather than characterizing a system by comparing its analog response to an analog stimulus, engineers must now characterize system performance by comparing a digital response to an analog stimulus. In this paper we will show how a traditional analog planar near-field range (NFR) may be retrofitted to accommodate an RFSoC based DAR operating in the receive mode, address the implementation of controls, discuss clock and timing for DARs in the lab, detail a triggering technique to produce time synchronous data, illustrate post processing techniques for generating far field and hologram plots, and demonstrate the technique with a testbed DAR comprised of a Xilinx RFSoC operating at L-Band.

Abstract:This article describes a high performance real time acquisition system of ultrasound linear phased array. A phased array may have 64 elements or more, while usually it's impossible to use independent channels as much, so we should switch channels to different array elements at different time. We use FPGA and DSRAM to realize digital beamformer control, auto switching between channels and signal's TGC. Before signal is sent to AD, band-pass filter is used. Multi-chip high speed DSPs can process the data and display the image. The ultrasound acquisition system is full digital and low power dissipation. In fact, more and more modem B-mode ultrasonic imaging devices use linear phased array. It can also be used for other medical and industrial measurement.

Abstract:The first Ka-band DTX-based bit-to-RF multi-beam transmitter array is demonstrated in this work. The DTX IC features a prototype digital outphasing architecture with a 4x frequency multiplication scheme and a piecewise varactor array (PVA) linearization technique. Further, a compact wideband ADPLL with 24-bit phase shifting is integrated, eliminating the high-frequency LO distribution and improving the phase/gain alignment in the array. Leveraging these techniques, a low-cost 24.5-30GHz DTX is fabricated in 40nm CMOS. It achieves an EVM of-24.2dB for 16QAM without calibration and only occupies a core area of 1.2 x1.35mm 2 . Bit-to-RF concurrent multi-beam forming is demonstrated with a lx8 uniform linear array (ULA) and the best normalized energy/area efficiency are achieved.
A Reconfigurable Subarray Architecture and Hybrid Beamforming for Millimeter-Wave Dual-Function-Radar-Communication Systems

Abstract:Dual-function-radar-communication (DFRC) is a promising candidate technology for next-generation networks. By integrating hybrid analog-digital (HAD) beamforming into a multi-user millimeter-wave (mmWave) DFRC system, we design a new reconfigurable subarray (RS) architecture and jointly optimize the HAD beamforming to maximize the communication sum-rate and ensure a prescribed signal-to-clutter-plus-noise ratio for radar sensing. Considering the non-convexity of this problem arising from multiplicative coupling of the analog and digital beamforming, we convert the sum-rate maximization into an equivalent weighted mean-square error minimization and apply penalty dual decomposition to decouple the analog and digital beamforming. Specifically, a second-order cone program is first constructed to optimize the fully digital counterpart of the HAD beamforming. Then, the sparsity of the RS architecture is exploited to obtain a low-complexity solution for the HAD beamforming. The convergence and complexity analyses of our algorithm are carried out under the RS architecture. Simulations corroborate that, with the RS architecture, DFRC offers effective communication and sensing and improves energy efficiency by 83.4% and 114.2% with a moderate number of radio frequency chains and phase shifters, compared to the persistently- and fullyconnected architectures, respectively.
