Abstract:Phase-coded radio frequency (RF) pulses are widely adopted for radar systems as an effective signal format to enable high-range resolution. However, generating such signals conventionally requires high-speed electronics and complex RF circuitry that impose burdens on the system cost and power consumption. In particular, modern radar systems desire features such as high frequencies, e.g., in the millimeter-wave region, high compactness, and high system flexibility, which pose great challenges for the conventional all-electronics solutions. In contrast, integrated microwave photonics opens a way to solutions that are able to provide those features simultaneously, together with potential for full integration and low cost fabrication. Here, we present an integrated microwave photonic method of a binary-phase-coded millimeter-wave signal generation. The core device is a silicon microring modulator with a device size of 0.13 mm×0.32 mm and a modulation bandwidth of 23 GHz. Using RF seed frequencies of 17.5 GHz and 20 GHz, respectively, we experimentally demonstrated the generation of binary-phase-coded signals at 35 GHz and 40 GHz using our proposed approach, the performance of which was verified by a pulse compression ratio of 94 and 106, respectively. The result of this work points to the realization of a chip-scale flexible millimeter-wave signal generator.

Abstract:A novel photonic approach for generating switchable multi-format chirp RF waveforms is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The key component in the scheme is a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM). By properly setting the bias voltage on the DPMZM, different chirp RF waveforms with a doubled bandwidth, including the dual-, up-, and down-chirp waveforms, can be generated, when an unmodulated RF signal and a chirp RF signal are injected. The experiments are implemented to demonstrate the generation of switchable chirp waveforms with bandwidths of 2 and 0.8 GHz. The proposed scheme features its compact structure, easiness in switching control, as well as bandwidth doubling, which has potential applications in multifunctional radars.

Abstract:We present a photonic method for the generation of dual-chirp signals. In this approach, a single-tone RF signal is first modulated using a modulator in order to generate two optical carriers, which are further modulated by a linearly chirped signal by another modulator. Square-law detection in a photodiode then generates a dual-chirp signal whose center frequency and time-bandwidth product (TBWP) are fourfold increased. The dual-chirping and the improved TBWP can improve the range resolution of the radar system and help avoid the range measurement error caused by the range-Doppler coupling effect. The generation of bandwidth-quadrupled S-band dual-chirp waveforms is demonstrated experimentally. The processing of the dual-chirp signal is also discussed, in order to show its advantages over single-chirp signals. We believe that the proposed approach is a potential solution for the generation of dual-chirp signals with high center frequency and large bandwidth in modern radar systems.

Abstract:Dual-chirp waveform, as a type of wideband radar signal that can improve the range-Doppler resolution in radar system has been studied widely. In this paper, a photonic scheme for generation of frequency- and bandwidth-doubling dual-chirp waveform is proposed and experimental demonstrated. An integrated dual-parallel MZM is applied, where a microwave signal and a single-chirp signal are modulated, biasing at null and full points, respectively. An electrical rather than optical band-pass filter that used in the system can reduce the complexity. Experimental results perform the generated dual-chirp waveforms with frequency of 6 GHz and bandwidth of 2 GHz. The time-bandwidth product is about 154.2. Potentially, this approach can be a method for high frequency, large bandwidth and long duration dual-chirp waveforms generation.

Abstract:The radar-centric terahertz integrated sensing and communication (THz-ISAC) is identified as a significant application in future wireless access networks. Up to date, previously reported demonstrations regarding radar sensing performance lack sufficient support in a complex environment with a strong target masking effect. This work tacks this problem by proposing a radar-centric waveform combining linear frequency modulation (LFM) waveform and phase shift keying (PSK). We first derive sensing metrics of the LFM-PSK waveform through theoretical analysis, including range resolution, peak sidelobe ratio (PSLR), and Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB). Then a proof-of-concept experiment on a photonics-assisted integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system operating at 330 with 18 GHz bandwidth is conducted to verify the performance of the proposed LFM-PSK waveform. In the experiment, the proposed waveform can reach a PSLR of up to 20.9 dB and a range resolution of 1.3 cm, simultaneously accommodating a data transmission of 6 Gbit/s. In addition, the effect of embedding symbols on sensing metrics is also discussed, and by comparing the range solution and PSLR with various data rates, around $\sim $ 6 dB gain in the PSLR without any deterioration of range resolution is observed.

Abstract:A novel, to the best of our knowledge, scheme for reconfigurable radar signal generation is proposed based on the principle of photonic phase-quantized digital-to-analog conversion. Multi-level digital phase modulation with different modulation depths is combined to convert multi-channel digital data to the phase of an optical carrier. Frequency-modulated or phase-modulated radar signals are generated by beating the phase-synthesized optical carrier with a coherent reference light. The proposed radar signal generator features a simple structure, highly reconfigurable modulation format, and flexibly tunable frequency. A 3-bit photonic phase-quantized digital-to-analog converter with a 10-GSa/s sampling rate is constructed experimentally. The generation of linear frequency-modulated, nonlinear frequency-modulated, frequency-stepped, frequency-hopping, binary phase-coded, and polyphase-coded waveforms is demonstrated.

Abstract:A broadband photonic analogg-to-digital converter (ADC) for X-band radar applications is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. An X-band signal with arbitrary waveform and a bandwidth up to 2 GHz, can be synchronously sampled and processed due to the optical sampling structure. In the experiment, the chirp signal centered at 9 GHz with a bandwidth of 1.6 GHz is sampled and down-converted with a signal-to-noise, ratio of 7.20 dIP, and an improved noise figure. Adopting the photonic ADC in the radar receiver and the above signal as the transmitted radar signal, an X-hand inverse synthetic aperture radar system is set up, and the range and cross-range resolutions of 9.4 and 8.3 cm are obtained, respectively.

Abstract:We demonstrated a photonics-based X-band radar system, in which the transmitter generates a linear frequency modulated signal centered at 10GHz with 2GHz bandwidth based on photonic arbitrary waveform generator (PAWG), and the receiver is based on photonic de-chirping. We conducted a field experiment on this radar system and achieved inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging of non-cooperative targets (airplane), verified the possibility of its application in future radar applications.

Abstract:A photonic generation scheme of a programmable coherent linear frequency modulated (LFM) signal is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. By heterodyne beating an agile optical frequency comb (OFC) with a fixed OFC, LFM signals in different bands can be obtained. The two OFCs are generated independently from two arms of a single dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DDMZM) and are then propagated through the same optical path, thus naturally ensuring the coherence of the LFM pulses at the minimum cost. The generation of the agile OFC only requires a sweeping intermediate frequency (IF) signal with the far lower center frequency and smaller bandwidth than the generated LFM signal. And by precisely controlling this IF signal, parameters of the LFM signal can be flexibly adjusted such as the center frequency, bandwidth, time duty, and sweeping pattern. In addition, envelope-tailorable LFM pulsed signals are further realized by pre-distorting the IF signal, supporting future multifunctional radar applications. We then establish a complete X-band radar system. The pulse-to-pulse phase coherent integration of the generated LFM signal enhances the signal-to-noise ratio of echo signals by ∼24 dB. A 5.8 cm range resolution is finally achieved, which is comparable to more complex photonic radar systems. This compact DDMZM based scheme not only improves the radar performance by realizing coherence pulses but also provides full control of these pulses, evidently benefiting the system integration and multifunctionality in future advanced radar applications.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a photonic scheme to generate reconfigurable radar waveforms based on an integrated silicon in-phase and quadrature-phase (IQ) modulator. It has significant advantages over commercial LiNbO3 modulator-based schemes in terms of the compatibility with CMOS technology, compact size, light weight, low cost and low power consumption. Experimentally, multi-format radar waveforms, including dual-chirp microwave waveforms, phase-shift keying signals, and amplitude-shift keying signals are successfully generated. The generated waveforms have flexible tunability of center frequency and bandwidth. Our scheme shows the great potential of an on-chip scheme to generate multi-format microwave waveforms for modern radars and electronic warfare systems.

Abstract:Radar has been widely used for military, security, and rescue purposes, and modern radar should be reconfigurable at multi-bands and have programmable central frequencies and considerable bandwidth agility. Microwave photonics or photonics-assisted radio-frequency technology is a unique solution to providing such capabilities. Here, we demonstrate an all-optical central-frequency-programmable and bandwidth-tailorable radar architecture that provides a coherent system and utilizes one mode-locked laser for both signal generation and reception. Heterodyning of two individually filtered optical pulses that are pre-chirped via wavelength-to-time mapping generates a wideband linearly chirped radar signal. The working bands can be flexibly tailored with the desired bandwidth at a user-preferred carrier frequency. Radar echoes are first modulated onto the pre-chirped optical pulse, which is also used for signal generation, and then stretched in time or compressed in frequency several fold based on the time-stretch principle. Thus, digitization is facilitated without loss of detection ability. We believe that our results demonstrate an innovative radar architecture with an ultra-high-range resolution.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a photonic scheme based on frequency doubling and photo-mixing to generate dual-chirp signals in the terahertz (THz) band. A broadband dual-chirp THz signal with 28 GHz bandwidth, ranging from 364 GHz to 392 GHz, is successfully generated in the proof-of-concept experiment, resulting in a chirp rate of 0.028 GHz/ns for both up chirp and down chirp signals. THz dual-chirp signals featuring a large bandwidth are beneficial to enable high resolution and high accuracy by mitigating the range measurement error induced by the range-Doppler coupling effect. Therefore, the proposed system is expected to have a great potential for future THz radar applications.

Abstract:We propose a photonic scheme to generate binary phase-coded microwave pulses and dual-chirp microwave waveforms without baseband-modulated signals (background noise) based on a dual-polarization dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP-DDMZM) which contains x-DDMZM and y-DDMZM at two different polarization states. A radio frequency (RF) signal from a microwave source is transferred into two differential RF signals and employed into one arm of x-DDMZM and one arm of y-DDMZM, while a baseband signal from an arbitrary waveform generator is divided by an electronic coupler and then driven into the two other arms of DP-DDMZM. By adjusting the phase differences between the x-DDMZM and the y-DDMZM, binary phase-coded pulses and dual-chirp signals without baseband-modulated signals are generated. The proposed scheme can eliminate the interference caused by baseband-modulated signals, and satisfy different radar applications for different frequency bands. Experimental results show that phase-coded signals at 15 GHz with the bit rates of 1 Gb/s and 2 Gb/s and dual-chirp signals at 10 GHz and 15 GHz with the time durations of 0.5 μs are successfully generated. The reported scheme is well analyzed in theory and verified by experiment.

Abstract:A photonics-based radar with generation and de-chirp processing of broadband linear frequency modulated continuous-wave (LFMCW) signal in optical domain is proposed for high-resolution and real-time inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging. In the proposed system, a broadband LFMCW signal is generated by a photonic frequency quadrupler based on a single integrated electro-optical modulator, and the echoes reflected from the targets are de-chirped to a low frequency signal by a microwave photonic frequency mixer. The proposed radar can operate at a high frequency with a large bandwidth, and thus achieve an ultra-high range resolution for ISAR imaging. Thanks to the wideband photonic de-chirp technique, the radar receiver could apply low-speed analog-to-digital conversion and mature digital signal processing, which makes real-time ISAR imaging possible. A K-band photonics-based radar with an instantaneous bandwidth of 8 GHz (18-26 GHz) is established and its performance for ISAR imaging is experimentally investigated. Results show that a recorded two-dimensional imaging resolution of ~2 cm × ~2 cm is achieved with a sampling rate of 100 MSa/s in the receiver. Besides, fast ISAR imaging with 100 frames per second is verified. The proposed radar is an effective solution to overcome the limitations on operation bandwidth and processing speed of current radar imaging technologies, which may enable applications where high-resolution and real-time radar imaging is required.

Abstract:A dual channel interleaved broadband subsampling photonic analog-to-digital converter (ADC) immune to channel mismatches capable for high-speed radar imaging is presented. Through modeling as a combination of photonic subsampling front-end and interleaved Nyquist sampling electronic ADC back-end, the mechanism of photonic inter-leaved subsampling of broadband signal and the appearance of spurious components caused by channel mismatches are explained. The effect of these spurious components on radar detecting is revealed. Through fractional Fourier domain filtering, the spurious components are eliminated, making the SNR of received X-band chirp signal (8-11.9 GHz) improved from 13.26 to 23.88 dB. Thanks to its downsampling and interleaved architecture, the demands of bandwidth, sampling rate, and storage depth for post electronics are all lowered, making it capable for high-speed and mass data receiving. In the experiment, inverse synthetic aperture radar imaging is performed characterized with range and cross range resolution of 4.9 and 7.9 cm. The false target due to the spurious component is distinguished through band-pass filtering in matched fractional Fourier domain.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel microwave photonic (MWP) radar scheme that is capable of optically generating and processing broadband linear frequency-modulated (LFM) microwave signals without using any radio-frequency (RF) sources. In the transmitter, a broadband LFM microwave signal is generated by controlling the period-one (P1) oscillation of an optically injected semiconductor laser. After targets reflection, photonic de-chirping is implemented based on a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DMZM), which is followed by a low-speed analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and digital signal processer (DSP) to reconstruct target information. Without the limitations of external RF sources, the proposed radar has an ultra-flexible tunability, and the main operating parameters are adjustable, including the central frequency, bandwidth, frequency band, and temporal period. In the experiment, a fully photonics-based radar with a bandwidth of 4 GHz is established for high-resolution and fast detection. The results show that a high range resolution reaching 1.88 cm, and a two-dimensional (2D) imaging resolution as high as 1.88 cm 2.00 cm is achieved with a sampling rate of 100 MSas in the receiver. The flexible tunability of the radar is also experimentally demonstrated. The proposed radar scheme features low cost, simple structure, and high reconfigurability, which may pave the way for future multifunction adaptive and miniaturized radars.

Abstract:Radar is the only sensor that can realize target imaging at all time and all weather, which would be a key technical enabler for future intelligent society. Poor resolution and large size are two critical issues for radars to gain ground in civil applications. Conventional electronic radars are difficult to address both issues especially in the relatively low-frequency band. In this work, we propose and experimentally demonstrate, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, a chip-based photonic radar based on silicon photonic platform, which can implement high resolution imaging with very small footprint. Both the wideband signal generator and the de-chirp receiver are integrated on the chip. A broadband photonic imaging radar occupying the full Ku band is experimentally established. A high precision range measurement with a resolution of 2.7 cm and an error of less than 2.75 mm is obtained. Inverse synthetic aperture (ISAR) imaging of multiple targets with complex profiles are also implemented.
