Abstract:Real-time and high-resolution target detection is highly desirable in modern radar applications. Electronic techniques have encountered grave difficulties in the development of such radars, which strictly rely on a large instantaneous bandwidth. In this article, a photonics-based real-time high-range-resolution radar is proposed with optical generation and processing of broadband linear frequency modulation (LFM) signals. A broadband LFM signal is generated in the transmitter by photonic frequency quadrupling, and the received echo is de-chirped to a low frequency signal by photonic frequency mixing. The system can operate at a high frequency and a large bandwidth while enabling real-time processing by low-speed analog-to-digital conversion and digital signal processing. A conceptual radar is established. Real-time processing of an 8-GHz LFM signal is achieved with a sampling rate of 500 MSa/s. Accurate distance measurement is implemented with a maximum error of 4 mm within a range of ~3.5 meters. Detection of two targets is demonstrated with a range-resolution as high as 1.875 cm. We believe the proposed radar architecture is a reliable solution to overcome the limitations of current radar on operation bandwidth and processing speed, and it is hopefully to be used in future radars for real-time and high-resolution target detection and imaging.

Abstract:We present a photonics-based bandwidth doubling technology for generating broadband terahertz (THz) radar signals. Our proposed approach addresses the challenges of high sampling rates and system instability in THz radar applications. In the experiment, we achieve a record range resolution of 2.5 mm and demonstrate over 95% accuracy in recognizing gestures through obstructions.

Abstract:Millimeter-Wave-based radar has gained attention in recent years for automotive and object detection applications. Several new applications are also emerging which employ mm-Wave radar techniques to construct short range mm-Wave 3D imaging systems for security screening and biomedical applications. At present, these types of 3D mm-Wave imagers have only been demonstrated in lll-V technology, as CMOS-based radar suffers several range and resolution limitations due to limited output power and linearity.Most CMOS mm-Wave radar systems used in automotive applications are based on Frequency-Modulated Continuous-Wave (FMCW) ranging techniques in which the carrier is swept to produce a frequency offset at the receiver output proportional to the round-trip distance between the radar and target. While FMCW is an excellent approach for accurate ranging, its implementation becomes particularly difficult at high frequencies as the resolution is heavily dependent on sweep linearity and the high RF front-end performance required to support the wideband swept carrier. For 3D mm-Wave imaging applications, this high operating frequency is indispensable as the attainable spatial (XY) resolution is fundamentally limited by the wavelength of the imaging system. Higher frequency also helps relax focusing lens requirements, as the optical diffraction limit is set by the ratio of the radar wavelength over the lens aperture size.

Abstract:The radar-centric terahertz integrated sensing and communication (THz-ISAC) is identified as a significant application in future wireless access networks. Up to date, previously reported demonstrations regarding radar sensing performance lack sufficient support in a complex environment with a strong target masking effect. This work tacks this problem by proposing a radar-centric waveform combining linear frequency modulation (LFM) waveform and phase shift keying (PSK). We first derive sensing metrics of the LFM-PSK waveform through theoretical analysis, including range resolution, peak sidelobe ratio (PSLR), and Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB). Then a proof-of-concept experiment on a photonics-assisted integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system operating at 330 with 18 GHz bandwidth is conducted to verify the performance of the proposed LFM-PSK waveform. In the experiment, the proposed waveform can reach a PSLR of up to 20.9 dB and a range resolution of 1.3 cm, simultaneously accommodating a data transmission of 6 Gbit/s. In addition, the effect of embedding symbols on sensing metrics is also discussed, and by comparing the range solution and PSLR with various data rates, around $\sim $ 6 dB gain in the PSLR without any deterioration of range resolution is observed.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) radar has been considered as a new solution to the dilemmas in performing ultra-high-resolution imaging and obtaining highly precise target information. In this work, a photonic THz interference inverse synthetic aperture radar (THz InISAR) scheme is proposed and proof-of-concept experimentally demonstrated, targeting high resolution positioning of multiple targets. We employ an optical frequency comb and a uni-traveling carrier photodiode (UTC-PD) to photonically generate a linear frequency-modulation (LFM) signal at 290--310 GHz. By using the anti-electromagnetic-interference THz photonic signal source, broadband THz transceivers and efficient InISAR algorithms, 3D positioning of corner reflectors over a distance of 2.2 m at the 300 GHz band is successfully achieved, reaching a resolution of 8 mm for both range and azimuth dimensions, and a maximum height error of 0.4 mm in a height range of 11 cm. To the best of our knowledge, our proposed system represents the ever-first accurate 3D positioning at the THz band above 300 GHz, revealing the great potential applications of THz radar systems.

Abstract:W-band inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging systems are very useful for automatic target recognition and classification due to their high spatial resolution, high penetration and small antenna size. Broadband linear frequency modulated wave (LFMW) is usually applied to this system for its de-chirping characteristic. However, nearly all of the LFMW generated in electronic W-band ISAR system are based on multipliers and mixers, suffering seriously from electromagnetic interference (EMI) and timing jitter. And photonic-assisted LFMW generator reported before is always limited by bandwidth or time aperture. In this paper, for the first time, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-resolution W-band ISAR imaging system utilizing a novel logic-operation-based photonic digital-to-analog converter (LOPDAC). The equivalent sampling rate of the LOPDAC is twice as large as the rate of the digital driving signal. Thus, a broadband LFMW with a large time aperture can be generated by the LOPDAC. This LFMW is up-converted to W band with an optical frequency comb. After photonic-assisted de-chirping processing and data processing to the echo, a high-resolution two-dimension image can be obtained. Experimentally, W-band radar with a time-bandwidth product (TBWP) as large as 79200 (bandwidth 8 GHz; temporal duration 9.9 us) is established and investigated. Results show that the two-dimension (range and cross-range) imaging resolution is ~1.9 cm × ~1.6 cm with a sampling rate of 100 MSa/s in the receiver.

Abstract:Radar is the only sensor that can realize target imaging at all time and all weather, which would be a key technical enabler for future intelligent society. Poor resolution and large size are two critical issues for radars to gain ground in civil applications. Conventional electronic radars are difficult to address both issues especially in the relatively low-frequency band. In this work, we propose and experimentally demonstrate, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, a chip-based photonic radar based on silicon photonic platform, which can implement high resolution imaging with very small footprint. Both the wideband signal generator and the de-chirp receiver are integrated on the chip. A broadband photonic imaging radar occupying the full Ku band is experimentally established. A high precision range measurement with a resolution of 2.7 cm and an error of less than 2.75 mm is obtained. Inverse synthetic aperture (ISAR) imaging of multiple targets with complex profiles are also implemented.

Abstract:With the development of millimeter-wave radar technology, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging with millimeter-wave radar has been widely investigated in both academic research and industrial applications. However, traditional SAR imaging algorithms mostly focus on two-dimensional information of detected targets which restricts the development of 3D scenes reconstruction applications. In this paper, a novel low-cost 3D imaging algorithm based on 77 GHz commercial millimeter-wave radar is proposed by fusing the advantages of wideband radar, SAR, and multiple-input multi-output(MIMO) radar. Through processing real data collected by a 77 GHz MIMO-SAR, the proposed algorithm is verified successfully with extracted range-azimuth-height information and is capable of reconstructing the real-world 3D scenes with high spatial resolution.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel microwave photonic (MWP) radar scheme that is capable of optically generating and processing broadband linear frequency-modulated (LFM) microwave signals without using any radio-frequency (RF) sources. In the transmitter, a broadband LFM microwave signal is generated by controlling the period-one (P1) oscillation of an optically injected semiconductor laser. After targets reflection, photonic de-chirping is implemented based on a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DMZM), which is followed by a low-speed analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and digital signal processer (DSP) to reconstruct target information. Without the limitations of external RF sources, the proposed radar has an ultra-flexible tunability, and the main operating parameters are adjustable, including central frequency, bandwidth, frequency band, and temporal period. In the experiment, a fully photonics-based Ku-band radar with a bandwidth of 4 GHz is established for high-resolution detection and inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging. Results show that a high range resolution reaching ~1.88 cm, and a two-dimensional (2D) imaging resolution as high as ~1.88 cm x ~2.00 cm are achieved with a sampling rate of 100 MSa/s in the receiver. The flexible tunability of the radar is also experimentally investigated. The proposed radar scheme features low cost, simple structure, and high reconfigurability, which, hopefully, is to be used in future multifunction adaptive and miniaturized radars.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a photonics-based coherent dual-band radar for super-resolution range profile in this paper. This radar cannot only generate coherent dual-band linear frequency modulated signals with large bandwidths, but also realize a paralleled coherent de-chirping processing to the dual-band echoes simultaneously based on a single compact photonics-assisted transceiver. The sharing of a single transceiver for signals with different bands ensures perfect stability and coherence among the waveforms, which makes it possible to realize a super-resolution range profile by fusion of dual-band signals without heavy computation on phase compensation. In the experiment, the radar operates in S-band with a bandwidth of 1.5 GHz and X-band with a bandwidth of 3 GHz, and results show its range resolution is up to 1.6 cm by coherent fusion processing, which is nearly corresponding to the resolution gotten by a linear frequency modulated wave with a bandwidth of 9.5 GHz ranging from 2 GHz to 11.5 GHz, much higher than the scenario when the radar is operated in the single-band mode. This technology would improve the accuracy of classification and recognition of the targets.

Abstract:A 24-GHz radar system for biomedical applications is designed, fabricated, and tested. The proposed radar system includes a flexible radio frequency (RF) board and a rigid baseband board. The RF board integrates two 4×4 patch arrays, a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), two low noise amplifiers (LNA), and a six-port structure. The baseband board has baseband amplifiers as well as an on-board sawtooth voltage generator (SVG). The SVG generates a 155-Hz sawtooth voltage signal to control the VCO. A 450-MHz bandwidth frequency ramp with a center frequency around 24 GHz is transmitted. With the proposed radar system, the inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging method is used to track moving targets in a crowded environment with stationary clutter. The theory of ISAR imaging is detailed in this paper. Two experiments were carried out to reveal the capabilities of the radar system in tracking single and multiple moving targets. The radar system is featured as being flexible and portable. The complete radar system has overall dimensions of 118mm×45mm×15mm.

Abstract:We present a photonic method for the generation of dual-chirp signals. In this approach, a single-tone RF signal is first modulated using a modulator in order to generate two optical carriers, which are further modulated by a linearly chirped signal by another modulator. Square-law detection in a photodiode then generates a dual-chirp signal whose center frequency and time-bandwidth product (TBWP) are fourfold increased. The dual-chirping and the improved TBWP can improve the range resolution of the radar system and help avoid the range measurement error caused by the range-Doppler coupling effect. The generation of bandwidth-quadrupled S-band dual-chirp waveforms is demonstrated experimentally. The processing of the dual-chirp signal is also discussed, in order to show its advantages over single-chirp signals. We believe that the proposed approach is a potential solution for the generation of dual-chirp signals with high center frequency and large bandwidth in modern radar systems.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) imaging radar is an advanced sensor applied in space surveillance and target recognition for supplying 3D geometric features and supporting visualization. However, high 3D resolution requires both broadband operation and a large 2D aperture, which are difficult and complex for conventional radars. This paper presents a photonics-enabled distributed multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) radar with a centralized architecture. By use of photonic multi-dimensional multiplexing, multi-channel signal generation and reception are implemented on a shared reference signal in a central office, enabling a highly coherent network with a simple structure. Additionally, a sparse array and a synthetic aperture are combined to efficiently reduce the required transceivers, further weakening the dilemma between system complexity and angular resolution. A 4 × 4 MIMO radar is established and evaluated in field tests. A high-resolution 3D image of a non-cooperative aircraft is obtained, in which rich details are displayed. From a comparison with electronics-based radar, significant resolution improvement is observed. The results verify the superior imaging capability and practicability of the proposed radar and its great potential to outperform conventional technologies in target classification and recognition applications.
[Effect of extracorporeal shock wave therapy on diabetic chronic wound healing and its histological features].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE Extracorporeal shock wave (ESW) can promote angiogenesis and tissue repair. To investigate the influence of ESW therapy on the histological features of diabetic chronic wounds and wound healing. METHODS Ninety-six male Sprague Dawley rats with weight (220 +/- 20) g were divided into 3 groups (n = 32): diabetic control group, ESW treatment group, and normal control group. The diabetic rats were prepared in diabetic control group and ESW treatment group by intraperitoneal injection of Streptozotocin (60 mg/kg). Then a circular full-thickness skin wound of 1.8 cm in diameter was made at the back of diabetic rats to establish the diabetic chronic wound model, and the same wound was made in normal control group. In ESW treatment group, ESW (0.11 mJ/mm2, 1.5 Hz energy, and 500 pulses) was applied to treat the wound at 1 day after wounding; in two control groups, no ESW treatment was given. The wound healing and histological changes were observed by HE and Masson staining at 3, 7, and 14 days after treatment; and the cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and collagen deposition were observed by CD31 and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) immunohistochemical staining. RESULTS The wound closure rate in diabetic control group was lower, and the healing time was significantly longer than those in normal control group (P < 0.05); at 3, 7, and 14 days after treatment, the inflammatory cell infiltration in wound tissue was obvious, and the relative area density of collagen fibers, wound microvessel density (MVD), and the relative density of PCNA-positive cells were significantly lower than those in normal control group (P < 0.05). The wound healing time was significantly shorter and the wound closure rate was significantly higher in ESW treatment group than those in the diabetic control group (P < 0.05). At different time points in ESW treatment group, the inflammatory cells signficantly reduced, while the relative area density of collagen fibers, MVD, and relative density of PCNA-positive cells significantly increased when compared with those in diabetic control group (P < 0.05). No significant difference in MVD and relative density of PCNA-positive cells was found between ESW treatment group and normal control group (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION Low-energy ESW treatment can inhibit the local inflammatory response, promote cell proliferation, increase angiogenesis and collagen deposition, and enhance granulation tissue formation, and so it can promote chronic wound healing in diabetic rats.
High-resolution Imaging of a High-Speed Target Based on a Reconfigurable Photonic Fractional Fourier Transformer.

Abstract:The previously reported photonics-based radar working with a large bandwidth has the advantages of realizing high-resolution imaging of targets with low velocity. However, the high velocity of a target will introduce Doppler dispersion to the echo signals, which severely deteriorates the imaging resolution. This problem becomes more noticeable as the bandwidth increases. In this paper, we propose a radar receiver based on a reconfigurable photonic fractional Fourier transformer (PFrFTer). The order of the PFrFTer can be reconstructed flexibly by changing the optical transform kernel. When the transform order matches the velocity of the target, the chirp echo signals behave as narrow impulses in the fractional Fourier domain, showing the range information with a high resolution. In the experiment, a PFrFTer is established and applied to process the echo signals with a bandwidth of 12 GHz. A lossless range resolution of 1.4 cm is obtained in range profiles and inverse synthetic aperture radar imaging for high-speed targets. This range resolution is much higher than that in the classical optical de-chirping receiver. These results demonstrate the PFrFTer is immune to the Doppler dispersion effect and is excellent for high-resolution imaging of high-speed target. The introduced technique would be of practical interest in the detection and recognition of targets.

Abstract:We demonstrated a photonics-based X-band radar system, in which the transmitter generates a linear frequency modulated signal centered at 10GHz with 2GHz bandwidth based on photonic arbitrary waveform generator (PAWG), and the receiver is based on photonic de-chirping. We conducted a field experiment on this radar system and achieved inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging of non-cooperative targets (airplane), verified the possibility of its application in future radar applications.
