Abstract:High efficient power management scheme is implemented to reduce the embedded system's power consumption.An integrity power management software system is designed and implemented based on Advanced Power Management(APM) technology with adding the bootloader's support for the power management,modifying the Linux kernel's code to support the power management for the S3C2440 processor and system's peripheral equipment,creating a user space daemon for power management.Experiment is done on the YLP2440 development board and the experimental results show that this power management system can reduce the power consumption to 11.67% and 12.96% respectively in two typical system frequency as that of the former in the idle state.

Abstract:Battery lifetime is one of the main challenges that impedes the deployment of energy-constrained wireless networks, such as unattended Internet-of-Things (IoT) systems. To prolong battery lifetime, the duty-cycle mode is utilized in many IoT systems, especially in environment monitoring Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) and Low-Power Wide-Area Networks (LPWAN). In duty-cycle mode, devices transmit packets during the active phase, which lasts for a short time, and sleeps the rest of the time. Prior research mainly focuses on energy efficiency in the active phase; energy consumption during the sleep phase, however, is always ignored, as it is assumed to have little margin to be optimized. In this work, we reveal that sleep phase can become a significant battery consumer due to the misconfiguration of General-Purpose Input/Output (GPIO) pins of micro-controllers. We propose OPCIO, which incorporates a genetic algorithm to obtain energy-efficient GPIO configurations automatically to squeeze the energy waste during the sleep phase. We prototype OPCIO on off the-shelf devices and evaluate it on two ARM devices. Experiment results show that OPCIO can effectively find multiple low-power configurations that prolong the lifespans up to 10x.

Abstract:Taking advantages of the modular nature of Linux, a set of Linux modules were improved to make Linux run on various SoC. The module improvement was including: developing a target-specific bootloader, designing a memory management module for the MMU-less processor, real-time improvement in scheduling module and organizing a small footprint file system for the flash memory. These modules can be reassembled on demands, catering for different boards and applications. Moreover, methods for developing embedded Linux are concluded, including tool chains and debug techniques. Case studies on two hardware platforms, based on ARM720T and M68K respectively, shown that the work satisfies application requirements.

Abstract:With the increasing deployment of Wi-Fi devices in portable embedded systems, the low power design at system level has attracted considerable research attention in the recent past. In this paper, based on hardware features and software architecture of the embedded Wi-Fi devices, we focus on dynamic power management, dynamic frequency scaling, and their influences upon the system power and performance. We propose effective and realizable system power management solution and application modes under various application requirements, such as response, bandwidth, and speed. Experimental results show that the proposed solutions can achieve significant energy savings.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a self-aware dynamic power management system, which is used to decrease the power consumption of the SoC system without performance cost by adjusting the working state of the SoC system dynamically. This dynamical working state adjustment is performed by the hardware automatically according to the feedback of the monitor module and the adjustment strategy configured by software in advance. This dynamic power management system is able to adjust the working state not only between different applications, but also between different stages in the same application if the occupancy of resources is changed. The adjustment is flexible and real-time.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to describe the power management system for portable electronics. In the recent years, consumers demand more and more from their mobile devices, including broadband connectivity and leading features such as high-end digital camera functions and HD audio, but one of the most requested features is a longer battery life. Achieving energy efficiency requires significant improvements in the energy usage profile of every system component and a high performance power management system. Other important key features are power density and a low profile of the circuit solution, which can be obtained only with a high frequency converter operation and integration SIP (system in package). In this paper the power management system for portable electronics, from wireless battery charging system to the CPU power management, will be introduced and discussed.
A User-Configured Low Power Optimizing Mechanism on Embedded System

Abstract:Currently, power management methods for embedded system are mainly implementations of DPM or DVS using workload-prediction techniques. A problem for this approach is that they are all purely hardware-oriented, regardless of factors such as software design and user's demands, which actually drive the hardware to generate power consumption. In this paper, we propose a low power optimizing mechanism to reduce the power consumption of embedded systems using Task Decomposition on software and FSM (Finite-State Machine) on device driver. Also, we present a novel power management strategy called User-Configured Threshold Timeout/Sleep Strategy, in which power management strategy is dynamically adjusted in accordance with the actual needs of users. After simulations on S3C6410 embedded systems, we find that our proposed mechanism can reduce by up to 70.6% of the power consumption, with an average of 58.5%.

Abstract:This paper presents a new framework for power reduction in embedded system by monitoring the system load and rescheduling the requests for devices. It focuses on the device that has different working states and when being idle, can be set into a power-down state. We use an "up-down" method to join the process, which initiates the requests to devices, Transferring Module and devices together. So the requirements specific to every request will be more detailed to power manager to make a decision. The request specific information is calculated in statistical method, which insures the accuracy. Transitions between different states of the device are achieved by breaking an accumulation threshold which evolves from the request specific information mentioned above. Using this framework, running period will be more intensive and there are longer idle period, devices do not have to change states frequently. Because the action of changing states is power consuming, the framework can get obvious reduction in power consumption. We implement this framework on an Intel XScalereg PXA255 development board and on average it can save more than 20% power compared to other power-aware policies.

Abstract:Power management is important for a mobile system relying on battery power, to achieve the efficient use of the power supply modules and intelligent monitoring. In this paper, some efficient LDO and switching powers are selected and high- performance STM32H743 chip are used to perform different power-on sequences. In addition, the relevant power supply parameters are monitored and controlled by using relays, voltage and current sensors. The test results show that the system has the characteristics of low heat dissipation, low power consumption, high security, long battery life and high reliability. This system effectively solves the backward comprehensive performance index and weak universality of the traditional power supply combination.

Abstract:The mass of the embedded systems are driven by second batteries, not by wired power supply. So saving energy is one of the main design goals for embedded system. In this paper we present a new technique for modelling and solving the dynamic power management (DPM) problem for embedded systems with complex behavioural characteristics. First we model a power-managed embedded computing system as a controllable Flow Chart. Then we use the Poisson process for optimisation, and give the power management algorithm by the help of Dynamic Voltage Scaling (DVS) technology. At last we built the experimental model using the PXA 255 Processors. The experimental results showed that the proposed technique can achieve more than 12% power saving compared to other existing DPM techniques.

Abstract:Dynamic power management (DPM) is a design methodology for dynamically reconfiguring systems to provide the requested services and performance levels with a minimum number of active components or a minimum load on such components. The principle of DPM selectively shuts down or depresses performance of some components that are idle. Many approaches have been exploited for DPM, different approach leads to different effects of power saving. Former analysis of power saving effect of DPM approach used to use theoretical computation or simulation which are difficult to reflect the real efficiency of power saving of the target DPM approach, this paper presents an analytic approach which could be embedded into the real implementation of DPM architecture to monitor the behavior of DPM approach, record information it needs for analysis, and analyze power saving effect offline, it could also support systems that have multi low power states. Experiment results shows that this analytic approach gets the same results as the simulated results

And partitioning or merging regions dynamically according the performance statistic. Abstract:Wireless communication now has the speed and power to converge seamlessly with other consumer and business electronics. However, battery technology has not kept pace with advancement in circuit technology. As a result, design of power management is becoming a more complex problem for this new generation of wireless devices with converged voice, data, and multimedia. In this paper, a highly integrated power management IC (PMIC) is presented which enables mobile devices that are more cost effective, thinner and more compact with better power efficiency. The overall architecture and system level design considerations are described. The design details of two key building blocks—low-dropout linear regulator (LDO) and switch-mode DC-DC converter—are also discussed, including a novel frequency compensation method for LDO.

Abstract:Recent technological advances have greatly improved the performance and features of embedded systems. With the number of just mobile devices now reaching nearly equal to the population of earth, embedded systems have truly become ubiquitous. These trends, however, have also made the task of managing their power consumption extremely challenging. In recent years, several techniques have been proposed to address this issue. In this paper, we survey the techniques for managing power consumption of embedded systems. We discuss the need of power management and provide a classification of the techniques on several important parameters to highlight their similarities and differences. This paper is intended to help the researchers and application-developers in gaining insights into the working of power management techniques and designing even more efficient high-performance embedded systems of tomorrow.

Abstract:For wireless sensor network (WSN) nodes, research on power management systems with self-powered functions is of great significance. This article first introduces a typical self-powered IoT node system, focusing on the energy consumption of self-powered WSN nodes. Secondly, it introduces the environmental energy harvesting technology of WSN systems, focusing on the analysis of light energy, mechanical energy, thermal energy and radio frequency the development status of energy. Thirdly analysis of energy harvesting-oriented power management control methods, focusing on the development of MPPT control algorithms. Finally, a comprehensive introduction to the power management system. The technical difficulties are summarized and the development trend of node power management system for self-powered WSN based on environmental energy harvesting is prospected.
