Abstract:After analyzing the merit and disadvantage of hybrid fractal zerotree wavelet image coding algorithm, a new improved coding algorithm based on the IFS mapping in the DWT domain is proposed. In this algorithm, the performances as zerotree-based encoder and fractal image coder are combined in the wavelet domain. Using oriented range and domain subtrees in the matching process, the matching precision is enhanced. For this reason, the image can be reconstructed blocklessly with more edge information retained. Experiment results are satisfactory, especially the compression ratio can be improved and the block effect in the reconstructed image can be eliminated.

Abstract:Since the encoding time for fractal encoding method is high and of importance, how to speed up the encoding is a key issue. In this paper, we propose a fast and efficient fractal coding algorithm, which is based on merged quadtree partitioning scheme. In this algorithm, the searching procedure in the finer level sufficiently uses the computing result of the coarser one. For the searches in finer levels, most of computation has been completed by searches in the coarser level, so the total search time reduces greatly. Besides, we use simple merged quadtree to reduce the number of transformation needed by encoding the whole image, so at the same PSNR, we also gain an increase of the compression ratio.

Abstract:Improving coding speed was a key problem of image fractal compression.The authors used defined eigenvalues to obtain the father-block or child-block characteristics by the self-contrast.The author proved that there were conditions for the existence of the father-block need just search for eigenvalues characteristics of father-blocks;and thus reduce the searching complexity.A method is introduced whereby the father-block after circumvolution does have change in its eigenvalue, so that in the search for ineffective father-block,the number of times of comparatively rapid calculation is distinctly reduced.Experimental results show that the search for eigenvalues is 3 or 4 times faster than that for non-eigenvalues while the quality of restituted images is not influenced by the search process.

Abstract:Fractal image compression becomes a hot topic because of its high compression ratio,but it also has some disadvantages especially the imbalance between coding and encoding.According to the basic principle of fractal image compression,an improved method is given,which replaces the traditional method and simplifies the computation based on the main diagonal before matching the range pool and the domain pool.Experimental results show that this method leads to better results on time and PSNR.

Abstract:Starting with a fractal-based image-compression algorithm based on wavelet transformation for hyperspectral images, the authors were able to obtain more spectral bands with the help of of hyperspectral remote sensing. Because large amounts of data and limited bandwidth complicate the storage and transmission of data measured by TB-level bits, it is important to compress image data acquired by hyperspectral sensors such as MODIS, PHI, and OMIS; otherwise, conventional lossless compression algorithms cannot reach adequate compression ratios. Other loss-compression methods can reach high compression ratios but lack good image fidelity, especially for hyperspectral image data. Among the third generation of image compression algorithms, fractal image compression based on wavelet transformation is superior to traditional compression methods, because it has high compression ratios and good image fidelity, and requires less computing time. To keep the spectral dimension invariable, the authors compared the results of two compression algorithms based on the storage-file structures of BSQ and of BIP, and improved the HV and Quadtree partitioning and domain-range matching algorithms in order to accelerate their encode/decode efficiency. The authors' Hyperspectral Image Process and Analysis System (HIPAS) software used a VC++6.0 integrated development environment (IDE), with which good experimental results were obtained. Possible modifications of the algorithm and limitations of the method are also discussed.
A Fast Fractal Image Compression Coding Method

Abstract:Fast algorithms for reducing encoding complexity of fractal image coding have recently been an important research topic. Search of the best matched domain block is the most computation intensive part of the fractal encoding process. In this paper, a fast fractal approximation coding scheme implemented on a personal computer based on matching in range block's neighbours is presented. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is very simple in implementation, fast in encoding time and high in compression ratio while PSNR is almost the same as compared with Barnsley's fractal block coding .

Abstract:Fractal image compression has high compression ratio compared with normal methods, but it bears a computation complexity for searching the matching blocks. This paper proposes two kinds of improvement methods to reduce the compression complexity. In these suggested methods, the local iteration function system with gray level maps (LIFSM) is combined with other kinds of schemes: (1) discrete cosine transform (DCT) called SMDSMD and (2) two dimensional interpolation called LIFSMI. Due to the DCT schemes and interpolation are more simple in limited area, so they can keep the advantage of LIFSM and speed up the computation and improve the image quality. Some experiments show the efficient results by using the proposed schemes.

Abstract:Fractal image encoding is a promising lossy compression technique in terms of achievable compression ratios and decoded image quality,but it suffers from long encoding time.Time is spent on searching out the best-matched block to each of range blocks in a usually-large domain pool.This paper proposes an accelerating scheme based on the categories of fractional box-counting dimension,by discussing their relation between the texture feature of image blocks and fractional box-counting dimension.Experiment results on three popular 512×512 test images show that,compared to the baseline fractal algorithm with the full search,the proposed algorithm not only can achieve the speed-up of about 30 times,but also can obtain the better decoded image quality.

Abstract:In this paper, a wavelet-based fractal image coding algorithm is proposed. The conventional fractal image coding in spatial domain is extended to wavelet domain by taking advantage of the self-similarities among different wavelet subtrees through proper affine transformation.. This method is based on the combination of the theory of multi-resolution analysis with iterated function systems by introducing some effective block-classification schemes. The original image is first transformed into wavelet domain in which fractal compression and arithmetic coding are performed. By classifying D blocks and R blocks set in this domain, the approach can significantly reduce the computation complexity and encoding time. Meanwhile, the hybrid image compression algorithm obtains much better coding performance in terms of PSNR with error modification. This is the main advantage of this method. A set of experiments and simulations show the potentials of using these classification techniques in wavelet domain for further improvements.

Abstract:The fractal image compression is a promising technology.In contrast with other compression methods,frac- tal image compression can obtain good decoding quality with high compression ratio.This paper proposes a combined fractal image compression algorithm based on DCT and variance,and the novel algorithm obtains good quality of the decoded images and need much less time than the baseline fractal algorithm.Experimental results show that the pro- posed algorithm has an excellent performance.

Abstract:Since fractal image compression could maintain high-resolution reconstructed images at very high compression ratio, it has great potential to improve the efficiency of image storage and image transmission. On the other hand, fractal image encoding is time consuming for the best matching search between range blocks and domain blocks, which limits the algorithm to practical application greatly. In order to solve this problem, two strategies are adopted to improve the fractal image encoding algorithm in this paper. Firstly, based on the definition of an image feature, a necessary condition of the best matching search and FFC algorithm are proposed, and it could reduce the search space observably and exclude most inappropriate domain blocks according to each range block before the best matching search. Secondly, on the basis of FFC algorithm, in order to reduce the mapping error during the best matching search, a special neural network is constructed to modify the mapping scheme for the subblocks, in which the pixel values fluctuate greatly (FNFC algorithm). Experimental results show that the proposed algorithms could obtain good quality of the reconstructed images and need much less time than the baseline encoding algorithm.

Abstract:As a structure-based image compression technology, fractal image compression (FIC) has been applied not only in image coding but also in many important image processing algorithms. However, two main bottlenecks restrained the develop and application of FIC for a long time. First, the encoding phase of FIC is time-consuming. Second, the quality of the reconstructed images for some images which have low structure-similarity is usually unacceptable. Based on the absolute value of Pearson's correlation coefficient (APCC), we had proposed an accelerating method to significantly speed up the encoding of FIC. In this paper, we make use of the sparse searching strategy to greatly improve the quality of the reconstructed images in FIC. We call it the sparse fractal image compression (SFIC). Furthermore, we combine both the APCC-based accelerating method and the sparse searching strategy to propose the fast sparse fractal image compression (FSFIC), which can effectively improve the two main bottlenecks of FIC. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm greatly improves both the efficiency and effectiveness of FIC.

Abstract:In this paper, the basic theory of image fractal compression is briefly introduced; some typical fractal compression approaches are discussed. Based on this discussion, according to the problem of long encoding time which exists in the typical fractal compression approaches, we propose a fast image fractal compression approach based on the combination of adaptive quad tree compression approach and graph-based image segmentation algorithm. Experiments shows that, compared with the typical approaches, our improved approach can valid accelerate the fractal coding speed on the premise of guaranteeing the decoded image’s quality.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose using the multiresolution method to enhance the speed of the fractal image compression First, we apply the wavelet decomposition to the domains and the ranges to obtain their multiresolution representation Then, irt the searching process, compute the matching error from the lowest resolution to the highest, Once the matching error for a domain is bigger than the current minimal error in one level, the domain is refused. Since most domains consist primarily of low frequency component, it is often that unsuitable domains are refused in the low resolution. in cooperation with the quadtree partition, our method greatly reduce the encoding time Moreover, we adopt a new transforming form to speed up decoding.

Abstract:For the convenience of store and transmission,it is necessary to conduct compression encoding for digital image.Fractal image coding has the characteristics of high compression,but the match searching time in the process of encoding is huge.In this paper a fractal image coding method based on block-dividing is proposed.The human vision system is not sensitive to the subjective quality of the reconstructed image in case of a small PSNR change.The original image is divided into small blocks in space domain directly,and to the interesting parts the blocks can be divided further by one-to-four.Then the fractal image coding to each blocks is carried out,and the reconstruction is also conducted ateach block respectively.The experimental results demonstrate that the match searching time can be reduced substantially and the subject image quality remain unchanged basically,meanwhile the PSNR being decreased slightly.

Abstract:In recent years, numerous fractal image compression (FIC) schemes and their applications in image processing have been proposed. However, traditional FIC ignores the importance of affine parameters in the iterated function system (IFS) and affine parameters are kept invariant for a certain image in almost all of these schemes. By analyzing fractal compression technology in this paper, we show that the affine parameters in IFS can vary with different image quality measurements. A positive correlation exists between the image contrast of fractal decoded image and affine scalar multiplier. This strong correlation demonstrates that an image can be sharpened or smoothed using fractal compression technology.

Abstract:As fractal image encoding algorithms can yield high-resolution reconstructed images at very high compression ratio, and therefore, have a great potential for improving the efficiency of image storage and image transmission. However, the baseline fractal encoding algorithm requires a great deal of time to complete the best matching search between the range and domain blocks, which greatly limits practical applications of the algorithm. In order to solve this problem, a necessary condition of the best matching search based on an image feature is proposed in this paper. The proposed method can reduce the search space significantly and excludes the most inappropriate domain blocks for each range block before carrying out the best matching search. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can produce good quality reconstructed images and requires much less time than the baseline encoding algorithm. Specifically, the new algorithm can speed up encoding by about 85 times with a loss of just 3 dB in the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), and yields compression ratios close to 34.
