Abstract:Computer Supported Collaboration has not only changed the way people work, but also the way people live, the way people entertain and the way people get education. The development of the Internet provides digital en tertainments and distant-learning with a good network environment and in these applications, 2.5D virtual environ ments are widely used due to their good performances and the sense of realism. But the Internet's inherent problem of latency affects the real-time feature of the virtual envirorunents, in particular multi-server ones. Based on traditional multi-server communication models, a new multi-server one is brought out which extended the region managed by each server. The model was adopted in Zhejiang Tourism Expo'2003, and achieved a great success.
A Framework for Java 3d Based Collaborative Virtual Environment

Abstract:In the recent years, the hardware technology, high bandwidth network and 3D graphics systems bring the virtual reality (VR) technology into a new field: collaborative virtual environment (CVE). This field's goal is to use computers as tools for communication and information share. CVE is different from distributed virtual environment (DVE), it concerns more about the collaboration and the consistency in the cooperative work. And Java 3D is a new 3D technology, it offers a simple way to build up other virtual environments, and make the cooperation between the users easier to realize and control. By leveraging the inherent strengths of the Java language, Java 3D technology extends the concept of "write once, run anywhere" to 3D graphics applications, which makes the applications be independent of the hardware and software plat flat. So we put forward a new framework of the CVE system based on Java 3D technology. In this framework, we give a system architecture to realize scalability, persistence, consistency, and other requirements in CVE, and further more, it can realize complex cooperative works.

Abstract:The article presents the fruits of the study on distributed integrated environment of virtual reality application in our country, and DVENET, the first distributed integrated environment of virtual reality application based on computer WAN in our country, which is mainly composed of the environment system and a series of development tools. By the environment system and development tools, we can rapidly establish applied virtual reality system, and master the study method on virtual reality. The article also points out a series of essential theory problems to be solved. Any breakthrough in these problems will enhance the progress in VR technology, distributed virtual environment and practical degree. It is a study field full of energy and challenges.

Abstract:An experimental multi-user distributed virtual environment MUDVE is introduced. After analyzing pros and cons of peer-to-peer topology and client-server topology, a new hybrid communication topology is presented, which has the characteristics of low latency and good scalability. The system functions, such as object-oriented data management, dynamic load balancing and user management are discussed. The system also provides functions of information service and resource discovery, which are deficient in the existing DVE systems. Finally the experiment platform is described and the result is shown in grabbed images.

Abstract:A novel design method of the distributed virtual environment development platform is studied in this paper. First, a language model based on complex behaviors for virtual environment is proposed to improve the ability of behavior modeling. Then a computing model of virtual environment based on the complex behavior is proposed to formalize the simulation computing unit of virtual environment extended to build up an distributed architecture of virtual environment application. The performance requirements of virtual environment are analyzed, and the concept of scalability is redefined. Some strategies of dynamic load distribution are discussed to maintain the performance of distributed virtual environment. Finally, YHVRP, a prototype system of distributed virtual environment development system, is introduced.

Abstract:This article presents three educational applications developed in these worlds. The first, for virtual museum of history and culture, shows a set of virtual worlds designed in VRML where the student interacts with different objects. When an object is selected, its name can be show and the student can listen to its history. In the following application, a virtual classroom,the created world can be shared simultaneously by several users. Finally, the latest advances in the creation of virtual environments have been applied in the third application using a game server. This has made possible the design of a more realistic world where the student can interact with other users and share his experiences.

Abstract:Based on the analyses of the concept, characteristics and advantages of existing 3D virtual worlds, the paper studies the techniques for utilizing the three-dimensional (3D) virtual geographic environment (VGE). A new approach of integrating real geographical spatial information into virtual worlds to realize distributed VGE applications based on the OpenSimulator is proposed. Taking the design and implementation of an immersive 3D virtual campus and its virtual applications as an example, the key technology and the key method for development of distributed VGE applications are investigated. The results show that the method for integration of virtual worlds and real geo-spatial information benefits VGE applications in several aspects of immersive virtual avatars, realistic and delicate rending effects of virtual environment representation, and collaboration and interaction between avatars or between avatars and the virtual environments. The approach can provide new methods to better develop distributed VGE applications in related fields.

Abstract:Virtual reality is now becoming matured for serious engineering applications. This paper describes an integrated multi-modal virtual design and virtual assembly environment within which the designers are enabled to create both the exact solid model of a part and the assembly model of a product in 3D space by direct 3D manipulations and voice commands intuitively and easily. Assembly planning can also be performed by users interactively in the environment. By integrating virtual assembly with virtual design, designers are allowed to modify components of an assembly in the same virtual environment without the need of time-consuming data exchange between virtual environment and CAD tools.

Abstract:Studies the design of distributed virtual environments (DVEs) for tele-multi-robotics. The proposed design, incorporating two models (distribution-supported model and VE-supported model), attempts to represent common functionality, communication issues, and requirements found in multi-operator DVEs. The distribution-supported model concentrates on the introduction of computer-supported collaborative work (CSCW) to realize the coordination of multi-operators, while the VE-supported model concentrates on the utilization of an object-oriented approach to strengthen the expandability and robustness of the system. Finally, the configuration and running environments of the system are given.

Abstract:Virtual reality technology, which is cyberspace composed of multimedia, is a field of comprehensive technology. It is of three basic feathers, namely, interaction, immersion and imagination so that we have to cope with the need for extremely large data sets, massive amounts of computation, and high-throughput networking. This paper presents an approach for object-oriented data modeling framework of complicated virtual environments. The paper discusses the hierarchical decomposition of objects in virtual environments and reuse of these object data libraries to constitute model of virtual environments. This modeling approach used in the paper makes sure that modeling data can be inherited, modularized, maintained easily so as to control redundant data and reduce the software development time, at the same time, realizes dynamic behaviors of objects to meet the needs of some changes of virtual environments.

Abstract:The Distributed Virtual Environment NETwork (DVENET) funded by National High Technology (863) Project has been focused at incorporating realistic 3D visual simulation into a joint exercise. This paper describes our recent research in the 3D visual simulation to enhance the realism of our virtual environment. During taking cartographic data produce a synthetic environment, terrain culture triangulation being the better process of including culture in the terrain allows features such as roads and rivers to become part of the terrain skin, rather than lying on top of it. In order to keep the frame rate above the threshold we reduce the polygon flow using the terrain paging and LOD techniques, at the same time our part morphing method based quadtrees can smooth the merging of one level of detail into another more efficiently. And our current spheric multiple-layer sky model can approximate atmospheric and other natural effects to set up many kinds of atmospheric simulations in our distributed virtual environment. We also give real-time representations of smoke and damage, which usually happened in military operations.

Abstract:Multi user shared virtual environment refers to a networked collaborative virtual reality system, users can interact with each other and control virtual objects by their graphic representation in the virtual environment. After analyzing some existing systems and the requirement of open and standardization of Internet, a reasonable scheme for multi user shared environment based on Internet is presented, which is called the multi user shared virtual environment framework (MSVEF). The architecture and related collaborative protocol based on XML are defined in the MSVEF. A preliminary prototype application shows that MSVEF can effectively support the representation and collaboration of participants in a different platform in the same virtual scene.

Abstract:In this paper, several key technologies on virtual environment oriented scene management and their implementation are addressed. Adopting the strategy of managing and rendering scene respectively, a new scene graph that can effectively describe large-scale virtual environment and a Scene graph based Binary Space Partition tree (SBSP) are proposed. Multiple thread technology based portal is used to load universe at real time according to the motion of avatar, and this method can avoid complex multiple thread control and communication of traditional scene schedule means. Based on above techniques, a prototype system named InteVR 1.0 has been developed, which uses OpenGL as graphic interface, to support the scene management and real time navigation of large-scale virtual environment.
