Abstract:Expressing complex curves with simple parametric curve segments is widely used in computer graphics, CAD and so on. This paper applies rational quadratic B-spline curves to give a global C 1 continuous approximation to a large class of plane parametric curves including rational parametric curves. Its application in approximate implicitization is also explored. The approximated parametric curve is first divided into intrinsic triangle convex segments which can be efficiently approximated with rational quadratic Bézier curves. With this approximation, we keep the convexity and the cusp (sharp) points of the approximated curve with simple computations. High accuracy approximation is achieved with a small number of quadratic segments. Experimental results are given to demonstrate the operation and efficiency of the algorithm.

Abstract:An algorithm is proposed to give a global approximation of an implicit real plane algebraic curve with rational quadratic B-spline curves. The algorithm consists of four steps: topology determination, curve segmentation, segment approximation and curve tracing. Due to the detailed geometric analysis, high accuracy of approximation may be achieved with a small number of quadratic segments. The final approximation keeps many important geometric features of the original curve such as the topology, convexity and sharp points. Our method is implemented and experiments show that it may achieve better approximation bound with less segments than previously known methods. We also extend the method to approximate spatial algebraic curves.
High Accuracy Approximation of Helices by Quintic Curves

Abstract:In this paper we present methods for approximating a helix segment by quintic Bézier curves or quintic rational Bézier curves based on the geometric Hermite interpolation technique in space. The fitting curve interpolates the curvatures as well as the Frenet frames of the original helix at both ends. We achieve a high accuracy of the approximation by giving a proper parametrization of the curve, and the approximation order of the height function along the helix axis is 9 provided that the screw angle of the helix is fixed. Numerical examples are also presented to illustrate the efficiency of the new method.

Abstract:The algorithm of hybrid approximation is a useful method for polynomial approximation of rational polynomial.However,the convergence is not assured in applying hybrid polynomial approximation sometimes.So,it is important to study the convergence conditions.With the help of previous work,this paper investigates the affection of reparametrization on the convergence condition for the hybrid polynomial approximation.Under some assumptions of the control point weights,some general sufficient conditions for which hybrid polynomial approximation converge to the rational Bezier curves after reparametrization are derived.
High accuracy approximation of hyperboloid surface patch by bicubic Bezier polynomials

Abstract:Bezier curve is required to interpolate the end points of given curve segment with GC1 continuity. One-sided approximation error is given and the choice of optimal interpolation points is studied, the optimal error estimate is obtained. Based on the above results for curve segments, the approximation of a hyperboloid surface patch using bicubic Bezier polynomials both for one sheet and two sheets is worked out. Its approximation accuracy is of sixth order. Furthermore the adjacent approximation surface patches have the same tangent plane at their common boundaries.

Abstract:Generaly speaking, Bézier curve interpolation with geometric continuity hasmore free parameter than corresponding Hermite interpolation, therefore with the same in-terpolation polynomial degree, the approximation error of the former is smaller. But some-times there is a surprising big difference between them. In this paper, as approximating aquarter unit circle, we show that the error ε3* (t) of cubic Hermite interpolation is of 400‖ε3* (t)‖∞≥ 400 @ ‖ε3(t)‖∞. Furthermore, for the error ε*4 (t,c) of Hermite interpola-tion of degree4 with a free parameterc, we still have min/c∈R max/t∈[0,1] |ε4*(t,c) | ≥ 6.3 @max/t∈[0,1] |ε3(t)|.

It applies piecewise cubic algebraic curves to give a globalG2continuity approximation to planar parametric curves. Approximation error on approximate implicitization of rational curves is given. Several examples are provided to prove that the proposed method is flexible and efficient.

Abstract:Based on an improved parameterized integer relation construction method, a complete algorithm is proposed for finding an exact minimal polynomial from its approximate root. It relies on a study of the error controlling for its approximation. We provide a sufficient condition on the precision of the approximation, depending only on the degree and the height of its minimal polynomial. Our result is superior to the existent error controlling on obtaining an exact rational or algebraic number from its approximation. Moreover, some applications are presented and compared with the subsistent methods.

Abstract:This paper presents an algorithm to approximate a solid model by a hierarchical set of bounding ellipsoids having optimal shape and volume approximation errors. The ellipsoid-tree is constructed in a top-down splitting framework. Starting from the root of hierarchy the volume occupied by a given model is divided into k sub-volumes where each is approximated by a volume bounding ellipsoid and will be later subdivided into k ellipsoids for the next level in hierarchy The difficulty for implementing this algorithm comes from how to evaluate the volume of an ellipsoid outside the given model effectively and efficiently (i.e., the outside-volume-error). A. new method analytical computation based is presented in this paper to compute the outside-volume-error. One application of ellipsoid-tree approximation has also been given at the end of the paper

Abstract:Given a sequence of Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund inequalities in $L_2$ on a usual compact space $\mathcal M$, Gröchenig introduced the weighted least squares polynomials and the least squares quadrature from pointwise samples of a function, and obtained approximation theorems and quadrature errors. In this paper we obtain approximation theorems and quadrature errors on the sphere which are optimal. We also give upper bounds of the operator norms of the weighted least squares operators.

In particular, when approximating a function $f$ on a compact set $K$, the critical points of our approximants may be taken to lie in any given domain containing $K$, and all the critical values in any given neighborhood of the polynomially convex hull of $f(K)$.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a fast and accurate method for approximating the Minkowski sum of two rotational ellipsoids with a superellipsoid. The Minkowski sum is used in a variety of applications such as robot motion planning and particle flow simulation requiring collision detection. Many of them are computed based on Minkowski sum, whose accuracy and processing time depend on how the mesh is created. We approximate Minkowski sum with a superellipsoid function. The superellipsoid has various shapes with the value of the exponents, and the computation of the parameters including the exponents is an algebraic computation with the time complexity . As a result, approximation error is small and computation is fast in all combinations of rotational ellipsoids. In addition, collision is quickly detected by solving the inequality of superellipsoid.

Abstract:Computing minimum distance between two objects is very important in a lot of areas such as CAD/CAM computer graphics and collision detection. In 2002, computing minimum distance between two ellipsoid was reduced into the problem of solving two bivariate polynomial equations with degrees at most 12 by Lennerz and those of degrees 8 and 16 by Sohn et al. In this paper, it is converted into the problem of solving two triple polynomial equations with degrees no larger than 2 and 9. This result is obtained by using the offset surface and the Lagrange techniques. One of the two points where the minimum distance occurs is obtained by tracing the above two equations. The minimum distance is then a root of a quadratic equation, and the other point could be calculated by an explicit formula.

Abstract:Approximating Bézier curve by polygon is a traditional technique in computer-aided geometric design, and there are several methods for constructing such polygons. In this paper, we propose to approximate Bézier curve by the least square polygon (LSP). LSP was derived by least square fitting which minimizes the integral of approximating errors. We provide a closed formula for the vertices of LSP. Because of its optimization method, LSP has lower approximation errors than existing approximating polygons. This observation is verified by many numerical examples we tested and several typical examples are included in this paper.

Abstract:Arc-length-preserving approximation of circular arcs by cubic Bezier and quartic PH curves was discussed.For cubic Bezier curves,the relation between the length of the curve and the distance of adjacent control points was explored.Hence,a robust numerical method was derived to determine the control points of the curve.Accurate solutions were also provided for quartic PH curves to approximate circular arcs.The results show that polynomial curves with lower degrees can approximate circular arcs with high precision with the requirement of preserving arc-length.

Abstract:This paper presents the following approximation algorithms for computing a minimum cost sequence of planes to cut a convex polyhedron P of n vertices out of a sphere Q: an O(n logn) time O(log2 n)-factor approximation, an O(n 1.5 logn) time O(logn)-factor approximation, and an O(1)-factor approximation with exponential running time. Our results significantly improve upon the previous O(n 3) time O(log2 n)-factor approximation solution.

Abstract:Polynomial approximations are almost always used when implementing functions on a computing system. In most cases, the polynomial that best approximates (for a given distance and in a given interval) a function has coefficients that are not exactly representable with a finite number of bits. And yet, the polynomial approximations that are actually implemented do have coefficients that are represented with a finite---and sometimes small---number of bits. This is due to the finiteness of the floating-point representations (for software implementations), and to the need to have small, hence fast and/or inexpensive, multipliers (for hardware implementations). We then have to consider polynomial approximations for which the degree- i coefficient has at most m i fractional bits; in other words, it is a rational number with denominator 2 m i . We provide a general and efficient method for finding the best polynomial approximation under this constraint. Moreover, our method also applies if some other constraints (such as requiring some coefficients to be equal to some predefined constants or minimizing relative error instead of absolute error) are required.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop an analytic solution for the best one-sided approximation of polynomials under L 1 norm, that is, we find two polynomials with lower degree which bound the given polynomial such that the areas between the bounding polynomials and the given polynomial attain minimum. The key ingredient of our technique is a characterization for one-sided approximations based on orthogonal polynomials. This result is applied in the degree reduction of interval polynomial/Bézier curves in Computer Aided Design.

Abstract:Factorization of polynomials is one of the foundations of symbolic computation. Its applications arise in numerous branches of mathematics and other sciences. However, the present advanced programming languages such as C++ and J++, do not support symbolic computation directly. Hence, it leads to difficulties in applying factorization in engineering fields. In this paper, the authors present an algorithm which use numerical method to obtain exact factors of a bivariate polynomial with rational coefficients. The proposed method can be directly implemented in efficient programming language such C++ together with the GNU Multiple-Precision Library. In addition, the numerical computation part often only requires double precision and is easily parallelizable.
