Abstract:Bezier curve is required to interpolate the end points of given curve segment with GC1 continuity. One-sided approximation error is given and the choice of optimal interpolation points is studied, the optimal error estimate is obtained. Based on the above results for curve segments, the approximation of a hyperboloid surface patch using bicubic Bezier polynomials both for one sheet and two sheets is worked out. Its approximation accuracy is of sixth order. Furthermore the adjacent approximation surface patches have the same tangent plane at their common boundaries.

Abstract:Expressing complex curves with simple parametric curve segments is widely used in computer graphics, CAD and so on. This paper applies rational quadratic B-spline curves to give a global C 1 continuous approximation to a large class of plane parametric curves including rational parametric curves. Its application in approximate implicitization is also explored. The approximated parametric curve is first divided into intrinsic triangle convex segments which can be efficiently approximated with rational quadratic Bézier curves. With this approximation, we keep the convexity and the cusp (sharp) points of the approximated curve with simple computations. High accuracy approximation is achieved with a small number of quadratic segments. Experimental results are given to demonstrate the operation and efficiency of the algorithm.

Abstract:A quadratic Bezier spline with G1-continuity is given to approximate a planar parametric curve. In its construction, the parametric curve is first divided into several segments. A rational quadratic Bezier curve is then applied to approximate each segment and recursive subdivision for the segment may be used if the approximation error is out of the given range. With this method, we not only keep the shape but also the direction of the parametric curve with simple computation using quadratic curves. High accuracy of the approximation is also achieved with relatively small number of conics. Parametric and implicit representations are two main forms for planar curves in CAGD. Each of the two representations has its own advantages. With the parametric representation, x = x(t)=d(t);y = y(t)=d(t), where x(t);y(t);d(t) are often polynomials (i.e. the rational form), it is easy to get every point in the curve and plot it. While for the implicit form f(x;y) = 0, it's easy to determine whether a point is on the curve. The availability of both often results in simpler computation. For example, with the two forms available, we can get the intersection of two planar curves by solving a one-variable equation. For any rational parametric curves, we can always convert it into implicit form. The process is called implicitization. While the converse, called parametrization, is not always true. The implicitization techniques include some classic algebraic geometry theories, such as the resultant based method, the Groebner basis method, the characteristic set method, and others such as moving lines and surfaces. Abstract:Based on the property of Jacobi polynomials and the solution of conditional extremum,the approximate merging of 4 neighbouring triangular Bézier surfaces with boundary constraints are discussed.With the help of the orthonormality of Jacobi polynomials and the Bernstein-Jacobi transformation matrix,the distance function with respect to L2 norm between the surfaces before and after approximate merging is obtained.Meanwhile,based on the boundary constraints and the boundary continuity at three corners,control points are constrained by linear equations.With the help of Lagrange multipliers,we obtain the optimal approximate merging surface with minimal distance.Both the control points of approximate merging surfaces and the precise error of approximation are expressed explicitly in matrix form.The degree elevation could reduce the merging error.Finally,several numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness and validity of the algorithm.

Abstract:Estimating principal curvatures and principal directions of a smooth surface represented by a triangular mesh is an important step in many CAD or graphics related tasks. This paper presents a new method for curvature tensor estimation on a triangular mesh by replacing flat triangles with triangular parametric patches. An improved local interpolation scheme of cubic triangular Bézier patches to vertices and vertex normals of triangle meshes is developed. Piecewise parametric surfaces that have C0 continuity across boundary curves of adjacent patches and G1 continuity at the joint vertices are obtained by the interpolation scheme. A closed form expression of Taubin integral–a 3×3 symmetric matrix in integral formulation–is derived based on the piecewise parametric surfaces. Principal curvatures and principal directions are then computed from the Taubin integral. The proposed method does not need to parameterize data points or solve a linear system which is usually required by other surface fitting methods. Compared to several state-of-the-art curvature estimation methods, the proposed method can generate more accurate results for general surface meshes. The experiments have demonstrated its accuracy, robustness and effectiveness.
Generation of Interpolatory Smooth Bézier Patches over Quadrilateral Mesh Based on C-C Subdivision

Abstract:Constructing smooth surface over arbitrary topological quadrilateral mesh is an important issue in CAGD. This paper presents an algorithm for generating smoothly connected Bézier patches that interpolate the mesh vertices over a quadrilateral mesh based on C-C subdivision. The input quadrilateral mesh is taken as the initial control mesh of C-C subdivision, and the limit surface of C-C subdivision is converted into Bézier patches. For each facet of the quadrilateral mesh, a Bézier patch is obtained. The Bézier patches are G 1-continuous along boundaries connecting to extraordinary points and C 2-continuous everywhere else. For resolving the shrinking problem of C-C subdivision, a recursive method to expand the initial control mesh is proposed based on the deviation analysis. The final surface generated from the expanded mesh interpolates the vertices of the input quadrilateral mesh. The experimental data show that the presented algorithm is effective and the constructed surface has good smoothness and continuity. It can be well applied to reconstruct smooth surface from quadrilateral mesh.

Abstract:In this paper we present methods for approximating a helix segment by quintic Bézier curves or quintic rational Bézier curves based on the geometric Hermite interpolation technique in space. The fitting curve interpolates the curvatures as well as the Frenet frames of the original helix at both ends. We achieve a high accuracy of the approximation by giving a proper parametrization of the curve, and the approximation order of the height function along the helix axis is 9 provided that the screw angle of the helix is fixed. Numerical examples are also presented to illustrate the efficiency of the new method.

Abstract:In this paper, a unified method for smoothing free-form surfaces with Bézier patches is presented. A non-smooth surface consisting of bicubic patches is turned into a G1 surface by the following process. Trim each patch along user-defined parameter lines using subdivision. Attach eight patches (one to each edge and one to each vertex) to each trimmed patch to blend between it and its neighbor patches. Using this method, solid objects bounded with bicubic Bézier patches can be G1 smoothed with bicubic patches. The operation is local. It provides designers with the facility to adjust the shape of a smoothed object interactively. The method can also be used for constructing smooth closed surfaces whose modeling is important for CAD/CG (cf. (Barnhill, 1985)).

Abstract:An efficient algorithm is presented for modeling closed surfaces with bicubic Bezier patches. Starting from a control polyhedron with four-sided faces (not necessary planar), the algorithm fits the faces of the polyhedron with bicubic Bezier patches which are globally G1 connected. Methods for controlling and modifying the smooth closed surfaces are provided by adjusting certain weight factors. The proposed method is capable of dealing with control meshes of arbitrary topology and offers a simple and convenient way for modifying the shape of smooth closed surfaces locally and interactively. Experimental results demonstrate the potential of our method.

Abstract:In this paper, explicit formulas are developed for representing a uniform bicubic spline surface that passes through an array of data points. The interpolated surface in the closed case is topologically equivalent to a torus. Open surface cases are reduced to closed surface cases by introducing one or two rows of `free points' such that the spline surface wraps around its boundaries. Ordinary interpolation surfaces in open cases can thus be constructed with the same formulas. It turns to be more intuitive and effective to control and modify the shape of the resultant surfaces by adjusting `free points' than by the usual derivatives and twist vectors. The interpolation surface is obtained in a two step way and the procedure is very easy to implement. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed formulas are practically useful.

Abstract:Recently, the use of B-spline curves/surfaces to fit point clouds by iteratively repositioning the B-spline's control points on the basis of geometrical rules has gained in popularity because of its simplicity, scalability, and generality. We distinguish between two types of fitting, interpolation and approximation. Interpolation generates a B-spline surface that passes through the data points, whereas approximation generates a B-spline surface that passes near the data points, minimizing the deviation of the surface from the data points. For surface interpolation, the data points are assumed to be in grids, whereas for surface approximation the data points are assumed to be randomly distributed. In this paper, an iterative geometric interpolation method, as well as an approximation method, which is based on the framework of the iterative geometric interpolation algorithm, is discussed. These two iterative methods are compared with standard fitting methods using some complex examples, and the advantages and shortcomings of our algorithms are discussed. Furthermore, we introduce two methods to accelerate the iterative geometric interpolation algorithm, as well as a method to impose geometric constraints, such as reflectional symmetry, on the iterative geometric interpolation process, and a novel fairing method for non-uniform complex data points. Complex examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:Approximating Bézier curve by polygon is a traditional technique in computer-aided geometric design, and there are several methods for constructing such polygons. In this paper, we propose to approximate Bézier curve by the least square polygon (LSP). LSP was derived by least square fitting which minimizes the integral of approximating errors. We provide a closed formula for the vertices of LSP. Because of its optimization method, LSP has lower approximation errors than existing approximating polygons. This observation is verified by many numerical examples we tested and several typical examples are included in this paper.

Abstract:Smooth freeform skins from simple panels constitute a challenging topic arising in contemporary architecture. We contribute to this problem area by showing how to approximate a negatively curved surface by smoothly joined rational bilinear patches. The approximation problem is solved with help of a new computational approach to the hyperbolic nets of Huhnen-Venedey and Rörig and optimization algorithms based on it. We also discuss its limits which lie in the topology of the input surface. Finally, freeform deformations based on Darboux transformations are used to generate smooth surfaces from smoothly joined Darboux cyclide patches; in this way we eliminate the restriction to surfaces with negative Gaussian curvature.

Abstract:A previous paper described an algorithm for accurate B-spline free-form de formation of polygonal objects to producet riangular Bézier patches. However that algorithm computed the control points of the resulting patches using a generalized de Casteljaualgorithm, which is expensive to compute. Abstract:Progressive-iterative approximation presents an intuitive way to generate a sequence of curves or patches, whose limit interpolates the given data points. It has been shown that the blending curves and tensor product blending patches with normalized totally positive basis have the progressive-iterative approximation property. In this paper, we prove that, the quadratic, cubic, and quartic non-uniform triangular Bernstein-Bezier patches also have the progressive-iterative approximation property. Since the most often employed in geometric design are the low degree curves or patches, especially the cubic curves and patches, the result shown in this paper has practical significance for geometric design.

Abstract:Approximating complex curves with simple parametric curves is widely used in CAGD, CG, and CNC. This paper presents an algorithm to compute a certified approximation to a given parametric space curve with cubic B-spline curves. By certified, we mean that the approximation can approximate the given curve to any given precision and preserve the geometric features of the given curve such as the topology, singular points, etc. The approximated curve is divided into segments called quasi-cubic Bézier curve segments which have properties similar to a cubic rational Bézier curve. And the approximate curve is naturally constructed as the associated cubic rational Bézier curve of the control tetrahedron of a quasi-cubic curve. A novel optimization method is proposed to select proper weights in the cubic rational Bézier curve to approximate the given curve. The error of the approximation is controlled by the size of its tetrahedron, which converges to zero by subdividing the curve segments. As an application, approximate implicit equations of the approximated curves can be computed. Experiments show that the method can approximate space curves of high degrees with high precision and very few cubic Bézier curve segments.

Cubic Surface Fitting to Image by Combination

Abstract:We present a new method for constructing a fitting surface to image data. The new method is based on a supposition that the given image data are sampled from an original scene that can be represented by a surface defined by piecewise quadratic polynomials. The surface representing the original scene is known as the original surface in this paper. Unlike existing methods, which generally construct the fitting surface to the original surface using image data as interpolation data, the new method constructs the fitting surface using the image data as constraints to reverse the sampling process, which improves the approximation precision of the fitting surface. Associated with each data point and its near region, the new method constructs a quadratic polynomial patch locally using the sampling formula as constraint. The quadratic patch approximates the original surface with a quadratic polynomial precision. The fitting surface which approximates the original surface is formed by the combination of all the quadratic polynomial patches. The experiments demonstrate that compared with Bi-cubic and Separable PCC methods, the new method produced resized images with high precision and good quality.
