Abstract:Denoising by soft-thresholding has been a standard algorithm in signal denoising. In fault measurement, it not only requires to reduce the noise, but also to reserve the singularity of signal. By analysing the different characteristics of signal and noise in wavelet analysis,this paper proposes an improved algorithm to enhance the denoising technique of wavelet soft-thresholding in estimating noise intensity, selecting threshold and adjusting wavelet coefficients. Simulations show that the new method solves the conflict commendably between protection of the local signals characteristics and restriction of noise, and can make proper analysis for different fault signals.
Wavelet Fault Detection Based on Filtering Pretreatment

Abstract:Noise degrades most existing fault detection methods based on singularity analysis.A method based on wavelet module maxima of the pretreated electric signal is proposed.As wavelet module maxima occur at peaks of signal,the pretreatment removes power frequency periodic components from electric signal and thus avoids misjudgments of fault.Wavelet transform decomposes fault component and noise into different scale spaces,which guarantees the abstraction of fault signature and the de-noising performance.The simplified Mallat singularity detection method not only reduces the computational complexity,but also keeps the localization accuracy.Simulations show that the fault detection method is precise for fault locating and insensible to noise.The method can also be applied to other periodic signal analysis.

Abstract:A program was given based on LabVIEW to execute decomposition and reconstruction with wavelet packet quickly.There were wavelet decomposition and reconstruction models in advanced signal process toolbox of LabVIEW,and the decomposition and seconstruction program could be quickly realized,but rare information about how to use,so the program was given to help to build the virtual device and diagnose the fault fast.Finally,decomposition and reconstruction with wavelet packet were executed,and the program was validated with the simulated signal.

Abstract:Fault feature is always hidden by strong noise background in gear fault signal. Based on morphological wavelet de-noising, a novel method was proposed to extract gear fault feature. Morphological wavelet de-noising has a good performance in extracting morphological feature in signal. Firstly, the signal was decomposed by morphological wavelet. Secondly, detail coefficient in each level was processed using soft threshold de-noising. Finally, fault feature was extracted by reconstructing original signal. Simulation and experiment results showed that this method is effective in gear feature extraction. Morphological wavelet de-noising algorithm includes addition, subtraction, maximum and minimum operations, and does not involve multiplication and division. It is suitable for on-line monitor and gear fault diagnosis.

Abstract:Optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) is a very effective technique for distributed fiber sensing, in spite of its disadvantages including low spatial resolution, high cost and relatively noisy return. In order to improve the performance of OTDR, the concept of wavelet transform is introduced into OTDR in this paper. Wavelet transform is used to transform analysis from the time domain to the time- frequency domain, so not only the location of measurand can be detected more exactly, but also the character of frequency of the measurand can be analyzed. It has a wide use in distributed fiber sensors such as pressure, temperature, especially disturbance detection of one or more different physical measurand fiber sensor. In this paper, first the basic concept of OTDR is introduced and the fiber loss along the length of fiber is also analyzed. Second the principle of wavelet theory is described, it suggest that wavelet transform has a perfect character of localization and also a satisfying performance in the transient signal detection and signal decomposition from noisy background. At last results of analysis and experiment of wavelet transform in OTDR are presented by data and graph. The conclusion is that signals which is difficult to be analyzed and recognized in time or frequency domain can have a better resolution in time-frequency domain, it is important not only to backscattered OTDR but also other distributed fiber sensors.

Abstract:A method of constructing wavelets by orthogonal filter banks is introduced, and the orthogonal filter banks must be regularity for constructing wavelets. The wavelets constructed respectively by FIR (finite impulse response) filter banks and IIR (infinite impulse response) filter banks are compared, and then the de-noise results are analyzed respectively by seven order Butterworth wavelet (based on IIR filter banks) and Daubechies wavelet (based on FIR filter banks). The results show that the effects by using low order IIR filter banks and high order FIR filter banks are similar. Finally, the technique developed is applied to the diagnoses of fault within an internal combustion engine. It proves that, as an embranchment of wavelet application, Butterworth wavelet can be well applied in digital signal processing and fault diagnosis.

Abstract:Based on primary theory of wavelet packet transformation, the signal of rolling bearing fault was processed, The signal characteristic can be effective withdrawn from the actual signal after wavelet packet decomposition and restructuring, Then, using Fourier transform, it presents an approach to get the frequency of fault signal. The experimental result proves that, the wavelet packet analysis can adaptively choose the related frequency band according to the analyzed signal characteristic. The practice example shows that this method is effective. The research results provide the theoretical foundation for rotary machine fault diagnosis, and have important practical value.
Signal Denoising Using Undecimated Second Generation Wavelet Transform

Abstract:Signal denoising is an important problem in the field of fault diagnosis of electromechanical equipment. For the wavelet coefficients of noises are trending towards zero rapidly as the scale increasing, the denoising methods based on wavelet transform have been widely researched. The construction of undecimated second generation wavelet transform (USGWT) was studied and the calculating formulas of its predicting and updating operators in time domain were given. Furthermore, the computational complexity of both second generation wavelet transform (SGWT) and undecimated second generation wavelet transform was analyzed and a signal denoising method using undecimated second generation wavelet transform was proposed. Owing to the approximate and detail coefficients at each level after decomposition using undecimated wavelet transform have the same length as the original signal, the transform can possess time invariant property and retain more characteristics in time domain, and therefore improve the effect of denoising. The simulated signal and real-life signal were used to test this method. It was shown that the presented method is effective for signal denoising and the fault feature of original signal can be desirably retained.

Abstract:Empirical wavelet transform (EWT) is a new self adaptive signal decomposition method. This method inherits the ad-vantages of EMD and wavelet transform, adaptively segments the Fourier spectrum by extracting the maxima point in the frequen-cy domain to separate the different modes, and then constructs adaptive band-pass filters in the frequency domain so as to construct orthogonal wavelet functions and extract AM-FM components that have a compact support Fourier spectrum. Here, the EWT is introduced in the mechanical fault diagnosis, and a new mechanical fault diagnosis method based on EWT is proposed. The EWT method is compared with the traditional EMD method. The simulation results show that the EWT method is obviously superior to the EMD method. The proposed method can effectively decompose the intrinsic modes of the signal. Compared with the EMD method, this method has some distinct advantages, such as less decomposed modes, no virtual modes, less calculation, easy to be understood in theory and etc. Finally, the proposed method was successfully applied to the rub-impact fault diagnosis of a rotor system. The experiment results show that the proposed method is effective, and can effectively reveal the frequency structure in rubbing fault and discern the severity of rub-impact fault.
Adaptive Fault Feature Extraction Based on Stationary Wavelet Packet Decomposition and Hilbert Transform

Abstract:A fault detection algorithm is proposed to adaptively extract the characteristic component of fault signals in this paper. The algorithm used one-level stationary wavelet packet transform to decompose the signal into low- and high-frequency subbands, whose instantaneous frequency and instantaneous amplitude are calculated by Hilbert transform at the same time. Based on the preset rules of component extraction and signal decomposition, the algorithm adaptively selects the path of stationary wavelet packet decomposition, building the wavelet packet decomposition tree of the signal with a multiresolution spectral analysis. Thus the algorithm denoiseds the signal and extracts the characteristic components for fault detection. The simulation show that the algorithm provides sufficient frequency-amplitude fault information with the less computational workloads and data storage spaces. The algorithm also has a good anti-noise performance.

Abstract:According to the characteristic of radar receiver signal,this paper proposed a new method in radar fault diagnosis,which combined wavelet transformation and Least Squares Support Vector Machine(LS-SVM).First,according to the expert's experiences,it selected the proper test point in the circuit,the sampled data characteristic was extracted and processed by wavelet transformation,then established the model of radar fault diagnosis,at last,the fault diagnosis in a certain type of radar receiver was applied by the basic principal and classification method of LS-SVM.The sampled signals were processed by wavelet de-noising in order to reduce error in sampling,and then applied wavelet decomposition to extract energy coefficient as the characteristic vectors of the radar,after normalization,they were the input vectors of the fault diagnosis model of radar,and the outputs of the model were used to complete the categories of the typical faults in the radar receiver.The actual example results of the simulation with MATLAB tools indicate that this method has better classification ability and improves the accuracy and efficiency of the fault diagnosis.

Abstract:According to the signal characteristic of some kind of radar,proposed the intelligence fault diagnosis method based on the wavelet neural network and expert knowledge,the application of this method in the middle frequency receiver of the radar is introduced,the sampled signals,after wavelet de-noising and wavelet feature vector extraction and then normalization,as the input vector of the wavelet neural network,the wavelet function is selected as the activation transfer function of the hidden layer to complete the categories of the typical faults in the radar receiver.The actual example results of the simulation with MATLAB tools indicate that this method has accurate diagnosis and higher intelligence level and better self-learning power and improves the accuracy and efficiency of the fault diagnosis.

Abstract:Wavelet fractal technology (WFT) is proposed according to the unity that possesses multiscale decompositions and self-similarity in both wavelet transform and fractal theory. In order to overcome disadvantage of the general method calculating box dimension (BD) of discrete signals, an improved algorithm of BD is given. An empirical formula is derived for choosing the scale-invariant region of periodic or quasi-periodic signals. This technology has been applied successfully to detect looseness fault in the bearing bushing of a turbo-generator set. It is shown that WFT can provide a new effective method to reveal nonstationary fault of mechanical equipment.

Abstract:Fiber optic communication is the primary communication method in large backbone power communication networks. The fiber optic network is carried on power communication optical cables, making the reliability of power communication optical cables greatly influence the communication service quality of the fiber optic network. When a fiber optic cable fault occurs, it is essential to detect and rectify it promptly. OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) is a commonly used tool for fiber optic cable fault detection. It is based on the backscattering fiber sensing technology and can measure the optical power curve that reflects the status of the fiber optic link. To determine whether a fiber optic cable has a fault and identify its location from the OTDR curve, analysis of the OTDR curve is necessary.This study focuses on event detection algorithms based on OTDR analysis and analyzes and verifies the two-point method and wavelet analysis method using Matlab. The two-point method locates events based on the slope changes in the curve, but it is susceptible to noise interference. On the other hand, the wavelet analysis method locates events based on the amplitude of the signal's high-frequency coefficients, offering higher positioning accuracy. The selection of wavelet basis and scale is crucial in signal wavelet analysis. This study combines the characteristics of OTDR curves and selects appropriate wavelet bases and scales. The experimental results show that this analysis method can accurately locate fault points and has practical application value.

Abstract:Distributed fiber optic sensing technique is considered as a promising tool to monitor continuously structural state in civil engineering. Distributed sensors produce large quantities of tempo-spatial data. The ability of wavelet transforms to detect abrupt changes, make them well suited for the analysis of monitoring data. This paper presents tempo-spatial wavelet-based data processing method for strain data measured by BOTDR (Brilliouin optical time domain reflectometer), a distributed fiber optic sensing technique based on Brilliouin scattering. First, wavelet analysis is used to reduce the noise of the measured data. Then, wavelet transform is used to detect abrupt strain changes in spatial and time domain respectively. A numerical example and monitoring strain data of some concrete tunnel are used to demonstrate feasibility of the proposed method

Abstract:The important significance of non-linear phase band-limited orthogonal wavelets in wavelets theory and engineering application was described. The advantages and construction of the non-linear phase band-limited orthogonal wavelets-combined orthogonal wavelet bases were introduced. Four fault signals buried in extremely strong interferences as typically encountered in power systems were detected by these wavelets and the others. The superiority of these wavelets over others in this case was demonstrated.

Abstract:To process vibration signals of high voltage breakers a new method based on wavelet packet is presented, the energy percentages on each scale, which are obtained by wavelet package – energy spectrum analysis, are used as the characteristic parameter to perform the fault diagnosis of high voltage circuit breakers. Using the wavelet packet transform, the given signal can be decomposed to the finer frequency band according to random time and frequency resolution and the frequency resolution of signal processing is improved. The signals from the wavelet packet orthogonal decomposition in each frequency band are independent and the energy in each frequency band is conservative. The simulating results show that it is effective to use the wavelet packet-energy spectrum in mechanic fault diagnosis of high voltage circuit breakers.

Abstract:With the extensive use of power cable in China, power cable fault is also increasing year by year, seriously affecting the power grid and the national economy. Cable location is the precondition of eliminating cable faults. But up to now, mature cable fault location methods in the world are mostly based on off-lion status and there is still lack of effective method on-line method. So it has practical significance to study cable on-line fault location. In this paper, wavelet analysis concept is introduced, and research wavelet application in on-line fault location which based on multi-resolution analysis and modulus maximums. Three methods are proposed: line model time difference method, line-zero module time difference method and wave velocity irrelevant method. Those three methods are also simulated and compared in different fault situation. Cable fault simulation model is building in Matlab, after the Analysis of the results, arrive at a more appropriate method.

Abstract:This paper has designed the simulating fault test equipment of rolling bearings. And the fault signals are successfully diagnosed by using the analysis of wavelet transform. Results show that the analysis methods of wavelet transform are reliable and accurate. They are useful for the condition monitoring and fault diagnosis to rolling bearings.
