Abstract:Polyethylene wax micro-emulsion was prepared from polyethylene wax 6 100 by high temperature and high-pressure method in hermetic conditions.Influences of HLB number and dosage of emulsifier,emulsification time,temperature,pH,stirring speed and cooling conditions on the properties of polyethylene wax emulsion were investigated.Furthermore,the morphology,particle size and distribution of the emulsion were analyzed by field emission-transmission electron microscope(FE-TEM) and laser dynamic light emission device(DLS).The results showed that the optimum emulsification condition was: HLB number was 14.8,the dosage of compound emulsifier was 6.4%,and the wax was emulsified at 130 ℃ for 40 min with 60 r/min of stirring speed under pH 8.The polyethylene wax ultrafine micro-emulsion with more than 40% of solid content,50 nm of average particle size,good stability and dispersibility could be obtained under the optimum condition.The softness and fullness of the fabric treated with this kind of ultrafine micro-emulsion was obviously improved.Frictional resistance of the fabric surface could be reduced,and the tailoring properties of the fabric could also be greatly improved.

Abstract:A series of octyltetramethyldisiloxane‐containing ethylene copolymers, poly(ethylene‐co‐OO7) (abbreviated as E‐co‐OO7), are prepared from vanadium catalyzed copolymerization of ethylene with 1‐oct(7‐en)yl‐3‐octyl‐1,1,3,3‐tetramethyldisiloxane (or OO7) macromonomer. The copolymers containing different silicone contents are employed as composite lubricants for high‐density polyethylene (HDPE). The influences of the silicone content in the copolymer and that of the added copolymer amount in the blend on the bulk and surface properties of the blends are systematically investigated. The results show that E‐co‐OO7 exhibits superior overall performance in comparison with conventional lubricants silicone masterbatch and polyethylene wax. Compared to HDPE control, 10 wt% E‐co‐OO7 addition increases the melt flow rates by 49%, increases the elongation at break from 740 to 860%, increases the water‐contact angle from 90° up to 108°, lowers the coefficient of friction from 0.072 to 0.049, lowers the specific wear rate from 11 × 10−3 to 5.6 × 10−3 mm3 Nm−1. The impact strength and high temperature thermal stability are also slightly improved. The measured Si/C atomic ratios demonstrate the sufficient silicone enrichment on surface of the blends. E‐co‐OO7 with 23.5 SiOSi per 1000 C gives the best internal lubrication, and E‐co‐OO7 with 29.7 SiOSi per 1000 C gives the best external lubrication.image
Synthesis, characterization and lubricating effect of long chain branched polydimethylsiloxane-g-polyethylene copolymers

Abstract:Long chain branched polydimethylsiloxane-g-polyethylene (PDMS-g-PE) copolymers were synthesized by hydrosilylation reaction between polymethylhydrosiloxane and vinyl terminated PE macromonomer. The structure and properties were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR), high temperature gel permeation chromatography (HT-GPC) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The effect of the hydrogen content of polymethylhydrosiloxane on the copolymer structure and properties was investigated. It was found that the molecular weight of PDMS-g-PE increased with the hydrogen content of polymethylhydrosiloxane since more PE macromonomers were grafted onto the polydimethylsiloxane main chains. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of PDMS-g-PE was extremely low, indicating the excellent molecular chain flexibility. PDMS-g-PE with more PE branched chains showed higher melting temperature (Tm) and higher melting enthalpy (ΔHm). PDMS-g-PE was used as flow modifier for HDPE. When 2% PDMS-g-PE was added to HDPE, the melting flow rate (MFR) increased by 21%, the elongation at break improved significantly and the impact strength improved a little, while the tensile strength and elastic modulus decreased slightly.

Abstract:Summary Widely used as it is, pipeline pigging still holds ambiguities in its mechanisms. In this paper we explore the nature of the wax removal process with a unique pigging facility. Solid wax content, yield stress, viscoelasticity, and microscopic characteristics of wax samples are thoroughly studied with differential-scanning-calorimetry (DSC) trials, rheological tests, and microscopic observations. We found that the relative solid wax content is approximately linearly dependent on temperature, and yield stress can be well-fitted with wax content in an exponential format. An investigation on wax-breaking force indicates that it increases with solid wax content. Wax removal efficiency increases with wax thickness and pipe-wall temperature, decreases with a wax-mixing ratio and solid wax content, and it varies irregularly vs. the scraping-element hardness in the pig. Furthermore, a prediction model of wax removal efficiency was developed on the basis of nondimensional analysis. The absolute average deviation of verification experiments against this model is 5.22%. This model might benefit in estimating the wax-scouring capacity of the wax-in-oil slurry and, therefore, helps to avoid wax blockage and to arrange the pigging program.

Abstract:Abstract Pigging is widely used in pipelines for wax removal. However, pigging operation relies heavily on “rule-of-thumb.” Because of its complexity and lack of methods, the wax removal mechanism is still poorly understood. This work aims to reveal the nature of the wax breaking process and thus promote understanding of wax removal physics. A unique experimental setup is designed and constructed to perform a series of wax removal experiments. The test section consisting of a 50-mm-ID, 600-mm-long, horizontal pipe has an accurate temperature control for wax casting and removal process. Different types of polyurethane pigs without oversize against the test section were used for the experiments to eliminate the influence of friction force between the pig and the pipe wall. Mixtures of crude oil and field wax deposit were cast inside the test section to carry out the experiments. In particular, a novel yield stress measurement was introduced into this study to characterize the wax hardness. The effects of wax thickness, mixing ratio of wax deposit to oil, pipe wall temperature, shape and aggressiveness of polyurethane pig on wax breaking force were investigated comprehensively. In particular, the dependences of wax breaking force on the pig aggressiveness and pipe wall temperature are clarified for the first time. In addition, it is found that the relationship between wax failure stress and yield stress can be well fitted as a linear relation. Furthermore, the dependences of wax breaking force on the wax hardness and pig design being used are revealed quantitatively. Subsequently, it is concluded that there is an overwhelming effect between wax failure stress and yield stress, where the wax failure stress exceeds the yield stress of the same wax deposit during the wax removal process. The findings of this paper are beneficial in determining the optimal de-waxing frequency and evaluating the pigging risks.

Abstract:The composition, preparation of water-based pigment paste for wet type synthetic leather were introduced. Several types of pigment that have large color gamut coverage for making the paste were also presented. In the design of the production process of pigment paste, several details should be taken into account such as the heavy metals, volatile organic compounds(VOCs) content, alkylphenol polyoxyethylene ether content (APEO), surfactant types and whether the pigment contains or degradation into a multi - chlorine biphenyl. The performance indicators and the compatibility testing methods of water-based pigment paste for synthetic leather were also proposed.

Abstract:Plastic is a synthetic, malleable, and durable material that has been used for various applications since its invention in the late 19th century. During its very long-time degradation process, mechanical and/or photochemical processes fragment plastic into increasingly smaller fragments called microplastics (MPs). In the cosmetic field, MPs are directly added to many products for various functions, including to exploit their exfoliating and structuring power. Unfortunately, it has been realized that MPs are not retained in purification plants and therefore end up in the aquatic environment causing a high problem of environmental pollution. Polyethene (PE) is the most widely used MP in cosmetics due to its use as a structuring agent, to provide consistency to formulations and as a key ingredient in lipsticks and mascaras. Given the limitations imposed by regulations and the growing demand from consumers for chemical-free and eco-friendly products, the common synthetic and petroleum-based waxes used in lipstick formulations, such as PE, must necessarily be replaced by natural waxes of plant origin. In this paper we report the development of a chemical-free and eco-friendly cosmetic stick. To achieve the goal, it was necessary to study the compatibility of the ABWAX® Revowax, natural alternative to PE, with oils and colours to predict the behaviour of these structuring waxes in more complex systems. Through a systematic comparative study, the two waxes showed similar thermal characteristics and showed similar penetration curves, presenting overall comparable performance in the MP-free finished product. We can therefore consider ABWAX® Revowax natural wax a valid alternative to PE.

Evaluation on the Performance of Liquid Whitening Pigment for Paper

Abstract:Liquid whitening pigments are being used in the papermaking more and more widely.Their features are capable of being switched quickly and adjusted easily,which are greatly beneficial in reducing the broke of paper,improving the overall efficiency for paper mills,therefore they comply with the development of large-scale,high-speed,and integrated paper machines.Based on the application results from paper mills,this paper suggests that the best liquid pigment should be cationic,and its pH value within 4.5～5.5,average particle size around 0.2 μm,light fastness 7～8 grade,heat resistance more than 200 ℃,acid and alkali resistance 4～5 grade,color differences between different batches of liquid pigment(ΔE) less than 0.5,in addition,the chemical structures of the pigments and the influence of high valent metal ions in the system on the performances of the pigments should be investigated.The paper also proposes the methods of testing the storage stability and foaming properties of the liquid pigments.The information given in this paper can be of good guidance in developing highly efficient liquid whitening pigments,and also as a reference for formulating the corresponding technical specifications.

Abstract:<p>Mechanical pigging is the most conventional method to mitigate the wax deposition in the field pipeline. However, wax removal physics of foam pig is still poorly understood. In this work, wax removal physics of foam pig is experimentally investigated in the pigging facility. Furthermore, wax removal physics of foam pig is proposed and further evaluated. Due to the energy absorption of foam pig during its elastic buckling, the wax resistive force of foam pig presents five phases including the build-up phase, pre-plug phase, damping phase, plug phase, and production phase. In the five-phase pigging process, the initial wax breaking force has a high risk of the pig stuck in the field compared to the steady wax breaking force. It is also noted that the wax removal physics changes when the wax yield stress and the wax layer thickness are increased. The effects of foam pig density, wax yield stress, and wax layer thickness on the wax breaking force and the wax removal efficiency are discussed. Furthermore, force analysis physical models and the energy absorption of foam pig are proposed to illustrate the experimental results. The effect of foam pig density on the wax breaking force is different for the wax layers with different strength. The wax removal efficiency of the low-density foam pig is significantly reduced for high strength wax layer.</p>

Abstract:Componental analysis of an imported industrial polishing wax was performed by using Fourier transform IR(FTIR) spectrometry as main analytical method and using GC-MS,XRD and ICP-AES as supplementary methods.Six main components,i.e.,palmitic acid,stearic acid,hydrogenated tallow oil,galipot resin,wax andα-silicon dioxide,were found,and in addition ferric oxide(Fe_2O_3) was found as a main inorganic metal oxide.Various components in the sample were separated by classification solvent extraction technique before the identification analysis.
Colorating and Mechanical Performance of Low-Density Polyethylene (Ldpe)/dye-Loaded Shell Powder (DPSP) Composites

Abstract:Filling and colorating are two important procedures in the polymer production. In this work, a bio-filler dye-loaded shell powder (DPSP) was prepared at first and then its filling and colorating effects on low density polyethylene (LDPE) polymer were investigated. SEM analysis showed the good dispersion of DPSP and strong interfacial adhesion. Mechanical property studies indicated that the incorporation of DPSP had an excellent filling effect at lower loading rate. Uniform color distribution in the specimens was also obtained at the premise of improving the mechanical performance of LDPE polymer. Vicat softening temperature tests indicated that the incorporation of DPSP could enhance the heat resistance of the composites. The optimal additive amount of DPSP was determined as 10 wt.% with a good balance between toughness and stiffness of LDPE composites.
The Utilisation of Polyethylene Waste Pyrolytic Wax as an Additive to Enhance the Performance of Virgin and Polypropylene-Modified Bitumen

Abstract:Plastic addition to bitumen increases the stiffness of the binder, reduces its workability due to the increase in viscosity, and causes storage stability issues. Thus, plastic pre-treatment methods are needed. This research aims to address these shortcomings by developing a wax derived from the pyrolysis of polyethylene (PE) waste and investigating its efficacy as an additive in virgin bitumen and bitumen modified with recycled polypropylene (PP). Penetration, softening point, segregation, stress ratio, consistency, stiffness, and viscosity of the modified bitumen were measured. The interior structure and chemical changes of the proposed binders were also studied using a fluorescence microscope and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). When virgin bitumen is modified with 7% PE wax, its softening point increases (+ 15%), its viscosity is reduced (− 27%), and no segregation issue is observed. It also presented a stiffness increase (+ 32%) and better resistance to hot climates. Adding 7% of PE wax to bitumen modified with 5% PP reduces its viscosity by 70% and segregation by 26% while increasing its stiffness and rutting resistance in comparison to the bitumen solely modified with PP. These results reveal that, in addition to enhancing bitumen properties, the proposed substance reduces compaction and mixing energy requirements.

Abstract:The deposition of wax in oil pipelines presents a costly production and transportation problem. The deposited wax is removed periodically by pigging operation in field. In this study, in order to understand this problem and address it, a series of wax deposition experiments involved the sloughing effect was performed in the laboratory flow loop, and a model was established to predict the wax deposition distribution along the pipeline. These results were used to implement a pigging program. In addition, a practical experimental method by testing the viscosity of deposit-in-oil slurry ahead of the pig was specially designed to measure the volume of deposit during pigging in actual field. The model predictions agreed with the field measured results excellently with a relative error being −10.9%. Of more importance, some pigging issues are discussed in combination with the data from the laboratory simulations and field pigging operation.

Abstract:Waxy crude oil pipelines are pigged periodically to scrape the adhered wax deposit from the pipe wall and remove it from the pipeline. If wax deposition on the pipe wall is not too severe and there is not much change in pipeline throughput due to wax deposition in winter, a pigging operation in winter is inadvisable because a “paraffin blockage” may occur during pigging due to a lower operating temperature. Seasonal pigging of this pipeline is advisable if the crude oil is piped at ambient temperature in summer and the wax deposit on the pipe wall accumulated during winter is eroded by the oil flow. The pipeline should be pigged during high temperatures in summer rather than in winter. A semi-empirical wax deposition model developed by our laboratory is used to predict the wax deposit distribution along the pipeline in different seasons and the volume of pre-pigging deposit on the pipe wall, and a seasonal pigging program is recommended. An experimental method consisting of determination of the gel point of wax-contaminated oil ahead of the pig is developed to calculate the volume of wax deposits removed by the pipeline pigging operation under actual field conditions to test the model. The wax content in the crude oil is determined from the gel point. The relative discrepancy between the predicted and the field experimental pigging operation data is 12.3%.
A Pigging Model for Wax Removal in Pipes

Abstract:Summary Pigging is widely used in pipelines for wax removal. However, pigging operation relies heavily on “rules of thumb.” Because of its complexity, rather-limited pigging models were presented to predict the wax-removal mechanics in past decades. This work aims to develop a pigging model for wax removal in pipelines. A unique experimental facility was designed and constructed for simulating pigging operation for wax removal in pipelines. This facility is composed of five main parts: an experiment system, a wax-casting system, a motor and control system, a measurement and data-acquisition system, and a specially designed pig system. The mixture of a crude-oil and a field-wax deposit was cast inside the test section to carry out the pigging experiments with disk-and-cup pigs. It was found that hardness of the scraping element in the pig has a profound effect on wax removal, and this effect depends closely on the wax thickness on the pipe wall. A pigging model, which could well explain the effects of wax thickness, wax hardness, pipe diameter, pig geometry, and hardness of the scraping element in the pig, was established on the basis of the experimental findings. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to incorporate into a pigging model the effect of the hardness of the scraping element in the pig on wax removal. Seventeen sets of pigging experiments were used to verify the developed pigging model, with an average relative error of 10.69%. The pigging model developed in this work could be a practical tool in designing economic and safe pigging programs.
EVALUATION OF LUBRICATING PROPERTY OF MOLYBDENUM DIALKYLDITHIOPHOSPHATE

Abstract:A four-ball machine was used to evaluate the extreme pressure and antiwear (EP & AW) properties of molybdenum dialkyldithiophosphate (MoDDP) in 150N paraffinic base oil and two formulated oils, SJ15W/40 and SH15W/40, and its antiwear synergistic effect with zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZnDDP) was studied. Besides, the antiwear action mechanism was analyzed. The results showed that MoDDP had good EP & AW properties in 150N paraffinic base oil, especially the outstanding AW property at a dosage of 1%. A low concentration of MoDDP possessed good antiwear synergism with ZnDDP; however, a high concentration of MoDDP did not exhibit obvious antiwear synergism with ZnDDP and did not show synergistic effect on EP performance.

Abstract:Wax deposition is a severe flow assurance challenge that threatens waxy crude oil production and transportation. For wax remediation, pipeline pigging is the most widely used technique. However, the elusiveness of wax removal mechanism and the lack of reliable methods to evaluate wax breaking force and wax removal efficiency easily trigger pig stalling and wax blockage in field pigging operations. Modeling wax breaking force and wax removal efficiency, therefore, promotes the pigging confidence. This Review seeks to clarify the current picture of wax removal research in crude oil pipeline pigging. Relevant wax deposit properties including wax layer thickness and strength are discussed. Wax removal mechanisms are summarized from perspectives of wax–pig interaction, macroscopic force response, and scenarios with oil flow. Prediction models of wax breaking force and wax removal efficiency are analyzed comprehensively. Pig geometry optimization using this model is given. In addition, the key roles of wax deposit strength, viscoelasticity and thixotropy, foam pig investigation, and wax plug prediction are highlighted for guiding future endeavors in this area.
Reinforcing effect of low polyethylene wax content on polydicyclopentadiene

Abstract:Polydicyclopentadiene (PDCPD)/polyethylene wax (PEW) blends containing a low content of PEW were prepared by in situ polymerization. The results of mechanical properties showed that the PEW was an effective reinforcing modifier of the PDCPD matrix. Through studying the microstructure of the blends by scanning electron microscopy and dynamic mechanical analysis, the reinforcing mechanisms were discussed. This paper is expected to broaden the selection of reinforcing modifiers of PDCPD and the use of dicyclopentadiene as a healing agent in self-healing applications.

Abstract:The recycling of plastic waste has gained importance in reducing environmental pollution and optimizing resource utilization in recent years. A promising approach is the conversion of waste polyethylene (PE) into polyethylene waxes (PEW). In this work, waste agricultural film (WAF) was utilized as feedstock to produce PEW. The pyrolytic waxes obtained exhibited a viscosity-average molecular weight ranging from 2000 to 7000 g/mol, with a yield exceeding 95% between 380-410°C, a time period of 15 to 45 minutes, and at a ratio of 1:1 of decahydronaphthalene solvent to raw material. The reaction mechanism for the production of waxes during PE pyrolysis involved the generation, transfer, isomerization, recombination and dehydrogenation reactions of free radicals, which predominantly leads to the formation of PEW, accompanied by the generation of other small hydrocarbon molecules.
