Abstract:A large amount of expensive and high quality soft components are needed when using deoiled asphalt (DOA) from solvent deasphalt processes (SDA) to produce high grade road blending asphalt. Furfural-deasphalted oils (DAO) extraction processes can provide soft component thus increase DOA value. The Kuop method was adopted to describe the four components (saturates, aromatics, resins and asphaltene) in DAO, and a model based on the UNIFAC thermodynamic equation describing liquid–liquid equilibrium in furfural-deasphalted oils was developed to simulate the extraction process. The results show that the maximum error between calculated values and experimental values is less than 5%. Refined oil yields and saturates contents increase with the increase of temperature, and refined oil yields increase linearly with the increase of furfural-DAO mass ratio, while the contents remain unchanged. Under liquid-liquid equilibrium conditions, the yield and content of refined oil remain unchanged with the increase of theoretical stage. However, the yield of refined oil increases to 30.1%(wt) under non-equilibrium conditions. These results indicate that the selective dissolution of aromatics in furfural can be reduced under higher temperatures, but it is not affected by furfural-DAO mass ratios.
