Abstract:Aluminum (Al) is the most abundant metal on earth and is solubilized to toxic level as the free Al~(3+) under acidic conditions. It is a serious environmental toxicant and is inimical to biota, which has been testified in many model organisms. In recent years, biologists have become more aware of the importance of the mechanisms of Al-toxicity and Al-tolerance in environmental and life sciences. In this paper, we reviewed four mechanisms of Al toxicity and tolerance in microorganisms, including (1) excreting organic acids to chelate Al~(3+), (2) overexpressing Mg~(2+) transporter protein to transport Mg~(2+) into the cell, (3) segregating Al~(3+) in vacuole by F-1F-0-ATPase and V-ATPase to eliminate the toxicity of Al~(3+) and (4) regulating the oxidative stress to modify the Al toxicity and tolerance mechanism in microorganisms.
Research advances in environmental effect and ecological toxicity of commonly used chemical flocculants

Abstract:Chemical coagulation is one of the water treatment methods widely used in China and other countries. More and more attention has been paid to the ecological safety of chemical flocculants during their usage. In this paper, the ecological safety in preparation, production, and usage of the commonly used Al-based flocculants, Fe-based flocculants, and organic polymer flocculants was analyzed. Due to the long-term application of Al-based flocculants, high concentrations of aluminum ions are remained in waters, and their migration and transformation in the environment can result in the damage of plants, animals, microorganisms, and human beings. Fe-based flocculants can also introduce some harmful ions and produce NO2 during their preparation process, and the iron ions can catalyze the formation of toxic radicals, leading to cell and tissue damage. Polyacrylamides can be decomposed to toxic acrylamide under natural conditions. Based on the present research status in the ecological safety of chemical flocculants at home and abroad, the application and research directions of the flocculants were discussed.

Abstract:Aluminium toxicity is the major factor limiting crop growth on acid soils, which greatly affects the crop productivity on about 40% cultivated soils of the world and 21% of China. In the past decades, a lot of researches on aluminium toxicity and resistant mechanisms have been doing, and great progress was achieved. This paper dealt with the genetic differences in aluminium tolerance among plants, screening and selecting methods and technologies for identifying aluminium resistance in plants, and physiological and molecular mechanism resistance to aluminium toxicity. Some aspects needed to be further studied were also briefly discussed.

Abstract:As a kind of stsong oxidant,perchlorate has produced serious environmental pollution in the extensive application.Its enrichment in human body,especially over a threshold of 0.0007 mg/kg,or 24.5μg/L in drinking water,leads to a bad effect on human health,for example,damaging the function of thyroid.Measures to control the perchlorate have been taken in some countries such as US and Japan.In our country,many water sources also have been contaminated by perchlorate,unfortunately it has not been regarded yet.In this paper the physical and chemical characteristics,the toxicological effects of perchlorate as well as its contaminative status are reviewed.The commonly used removal methods for perchlorate are comprehensively introduced,of which the biological treatment and the ion exchange membrane bioreactor are the two most efficient methods.

Abstract:In this paper, aqueous-chemical characteristics, bio-toxicity and related criterions of aluminum were presented. Aluminum disposition and distribution in water supplying system was summarized based on previous researches. Concentration variation characteristic of aluminum, transformation laws between different aluminum forms and their affecting factors were discussed. Finally, feasibility suggestions were proposed to reduce aluminum concentration in water supplying system. In the future, fundamental research on the factors affecting aluminum dissolve-sediment equilibrium and the effect of aluminum on water quality should be strengthened.

Meanwhile, the utilization of coagulants, additives and aluminumware may increase the possibility of human being's exposure to aluminum. With the profound researches on the environmental geochemistry and biological toxicology of aluminum, the publics concentrate their attentions more and more on its ecological effect. The characters of the coagulant, chemical dosage level and coagulating condition were included. Furthermore the correlation between residual turbidity and aluminum was discussed. Abstract:Aquatic acidification has been becoming a major issue in recent years. Concomitant with aquatic acidification, Aluminum (Al) toxicity also pose threat to the fish. The purpose of the present study was to assess the combined effect of aquatic acidification and Al on ion concentrations in plasma, ATPase activities in liver and kidney, and health status of fish. Juvenile common carp were exposed to solutions with different combined concentrations of pH (7, 5) and Al (0, 800 mu g L-1) for 1, 3, 9 days. We found that 9 days exposure to Al increased the levels of Na+ and Cl-. The K+ level significantly increased in low pH and low pH/Al treatments after exposure for 1 and 9 days. Furthermore, the activities of Na+/K+-ATPase and Ca2+-ATPase in liver were significantly decreased after exposure for 3 and 9 days, which indicated that the liver played an important role in coping with the stress. Besides, the increase of RBC and decrease of WBC also reconfirmed the toxic effect of low pH and Al on common carp. These results provide some evidence on understanding the impact of low pH and Al on the health status of fish.

Abstract:Aluminium in drinking water has detrimental effect on human health .Bench-scale experiments indi-cated that conventional drinking water treatmen t processes,such as coagulation and sedimentation,could sig-nificantly reduc e residual aluminium in colloid form in water.The effect of a type of coagulant and its dosage,pH and temperature etc.were further investigated.It was foun d that they had pronounced impact on the removal of turbidity and aluminium that had good correlation.However,the requirements for removing aluminium are more stringent than those for turbidity.By choosing a suitable type of coagulant and the optimum conditions for removal of aluminium and turbidity,the conventi onal treatment process can be optimized.Therefore,it is feasi-ble to control the contents of residual aluminium to satisfy the standards for drinking water quality.

Abstract:Soil acidification can alter the biogeochemistry of ecosystems and adversely affect biota; however, there are still many debates about the toxicity of aluminum (Al) fractions and Al species in soil:water extracts to plants. In this study, five crude soils with different pH values (4.92-8.51) were collected, seeded with tall fescue and grown in rhizosphere boxes for 120 days. Then, soil properties, labile Al fractions and Al species in soil:water extracts were determined, and their toxicities to plants were analyzed. Our study showed that a stable exchangeable Al fraction (ExAl) pool exists and is supplied by other labile Al fractions. Dissolution of Al from adsorbed hydroxyl-Al fraction (HyAl) and organic-Al fraction (OrAl) may play important roles in soil Al toxicity, as HyAl and OrAl account for major parts of soil labile Al. Additionally, Al3+ and mononuclear hydroxyl-Al species in soil:water extracts have few effects to plants. Nevertheless, high negative correlations were found between Al-F- complexes and tall fescue biomass, indicating their toxicity in the natural soil environment. Thus, in many cases, Al3+ toxicity should not be emphasized because of its lower activity in soil water extracts. Moreover, toxicities of AlF3 (aq) and AlF4- to plants should be emphasized, because they have been confirmed in soil water extracts in this study.

Abstract:The effects of aluminum toxicity on plants in morphology and physiology were summarized, and the mechanism of aluminum toxicity to plants, the strategies of plants resisting aluminum toxicity and the different responses to aluminum stress by aluminum-tolerant and aluminum-sensitive plants were reviewed in this paper. It also stated that organic acids and phosphorus played an important role in the process of plant resistance to aluminum toxicity. Abstract:The residual Al concentration and species distribution of a north Chinese city was surveyed using fluorimetry. Results showed that the highest total Al concentration was 0.078 mg x L(-1) and the mean concentration was 0.038 mg x L(-1), lower than the latest portable water standard of 0.2 mg x L(-1). Inorganic mono-aluminum and inorganic poly-aluminum, the main toxicity-leading species, were also the major existence species with the mean concentration 0.011 mg x L(-1) and 0.013 mg x L(-1) respectively. While organic combined aluminum concentration was quite low. Correlation analysis results showed that the Al concentration and species distribution in a certain pipe line was connected with the water quality. When the distribution system contained more salts and less soluble organic matter, the Al concentration would be controlled in a low level, which was important to guide the local operation.

Abstract:Objective To explore the effects of chemical reaction of aluminum salt in water solution on developmental toxicity.Methods Inhibiting actions on embryo growth and development,and organ morphogenetic differentiation in rats induced by newly prepared and 11.5-month stored aluminum sulfate solution were observed and compared using whole embryo culture method in rats.Results Both of the two observed solutions showed a certain embryo toxicity and teratogenicity.The toxicity of stored solution decreased significantly compared with that of newly prepared solution.At the same concentration of aluminum,the total Brown's morphogenetic score reflecting the every index of embryo growth and development and organ morphogenetic differentiation,the incidence rates of terata and the number of dead embryos were significant lower in rats exposed to stored solution compared with those exposed to newly prepared solution,especially the morbidity of embryos.Conclusion The complexation reaction between aluminum ions (Al3+) and water molecules in stored aluminum sulfate solution resulted in the changes of existing state of Al3+ and its decreasing developmental toxicity to rats.

Abstract:Residual Al in drinking water and water distribution system has attracted widespread attention recently.On the basis of the adverse effect of residual Al on human health,ecosystem,water treatment technology and water distribution system,this paper lists the domestic and foreign regulations of Al levels in drinking water,and analyzes the factors influencing residual Al concentration and its speciation distribution.In addition,this paper gives an overview of the presence of residual Al in drinking water with reference to its speciation,fractionation method,removal(treatment methods) and the way to reduce residual Al concentration in drinking water.Some suggestions for the future research on residual Al in drinking water are also put forward in this paper.It is hoped that this review will be beneficial to the theoretical direction of the effective reduction and control of residual Al concentration during actual drinking water treatment.
Effects of terrestrial input on the harmful algal bloom area-with aluminum as an example

Abstract:In recent years, eutrophication and frequently occurred harmful algal blooms (HAB) become serious in the coastal area near Changjiang River estuary, and the nutrients came from Changjiang River may be the main sources for them. Aluminum could be used as a useful tracer for the terrestrial input and the movement of different water mass, since it enters into the natural water with the erosion products of soil and rock, and its residence time in the ocean is short and uneasy to be disturbed by the activities of human being. Based on our results, the concentration of dissolved Al was higher in Autumn than in Summer, and showed some relationships with the salinity and suspended particulate matter (SPM). The concentration of Al in the HAB area was higher than 0.04 mumol.L-1, which showed the significant influence from the terrestrial input. The concentration of dissolved Al decreased nearly 40% after the occurrence of HAB, and the flocculation of dissolved Al and its absorption onto the surfaces of biogenic particles might be the main reasons. There still need further study about the variation of Al forms and its mechanism during the occurrence of HAB.

Abstract:Different forms of aluminum (Al) in soil can be toxic to plants and the bacterial community. In our previous study, the distribution and toxicity to plants of soil Al species and soil labile Al fractions were examined. However, the toxicity of different forms of Al on the bacterial community has not been completely studied. In this study, five soil samples (pH: 4.92, 6.17, 6.62, 6.70, 8.51) were collected from Lichuan, China. Tall fescue was planted in rhizosphere boxes with those soils for 120 days. The toxicity of soil Al species and soil labile Al fractions on the bacterial community of near-rhizosphere (NR) soils and far-rhizosphere (FR) soils were analyzed. The effect of different forms of Al on bacterial community between NR and FR soils was small, but the difference was obvious according to the different spatial distribution of samples. An individual bacterial community has eosinophilia, and most bacterial communities are tolerant of heavy metals (e.g., Cu, Zn, Cd). The toxicity of exchangeable Al has a strong effect on the bacterial community. Meanwhile, the toxicity of Al3+ to the bacterial community is strong. In this study, the key finding was that the toxicity of the Al-F- complex toward the bacterial community and plants was different. AlF2+, AlF2+, AlF3, and AlF4- are toxic for the bacterial community, and the correlation decreases with the addition of F-. This finding is of considerable significance to the treatment of acid-contaminated soil and the study of the tolerance mechanism of plants toward Al.

Abstract:A series of experiments were designed to study the removal of residual aluminum from water plants. Some factors, such as temperature, pH value and filtration conditions etc. were studied. With temperature rising the concentration of residual aluminum increases and the optimum pH value decreases. Adjstments of pH value can change the portions of dissolved aluminum and particulate aluminum, so the removability of residual aluminum is improved. Filtration is not synchronous to the removal of aluminum and turbidity. The filtration period should consider the influences of turbidity and aluminum. On this basis some proposals are put forward for operation of water plant.

Abstract:Effects of aluminum on water distribution system and human health mainly attribute to its speciation in drinking water. Laboratory experiments were performed to investigate factors that may influence aluminum speciation in water supply system. The concentration of soluble aluminum and its transformation among other aluminum species were mainly controlled by kinetics processes of related reactions. Total aluminum concentration had a notable effect on the concentrations of mononuclear and soluble aluminum in the first 4 day; then its effect became weak. At pH above 7.50, both fluoride and orthophosphate had little effect on aluminum speciation; while, when the solution pH was below 7.50, the concentrations of mononuclear and soluble aluminum were proportional to the concentration of fluoride and inversely proportional to the concentration of orthophosphate. Both mononuclear and polynuclear silicic acids could complex with mononuclear aluminum by forming soluble aluminosilicates. In addition, the adding sequence of orthophosphate and aluminum into drinking water would also affect the distribution of aluminum species in the first 4 day. In order to minimize aluminum bioavailability in drinking water, it was suggested that orthophosphate should be added prior to coagulant process, and that the concentrations of fluoride and silicic acids should be controlled below 2.0 and 25 mg/L, respectively, prior to the treatment. The solution pH in coagulation and filtration processes should be controlled in the range of 6.50-7.50.
Transformation rule of aluminum form of Al-based coagulants in coagulation and sedimentation process

Abstract:The transformation rule of two kinds of traditional aluminum coagulants in simulated water including aluminum sulfate and aluminum chloride, and two kinds of polymeric aluminum chloride (PAC) flocculants in coagulation process and also the influences of turbidity and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in raw water on the form distribution of residual aluminum were studied. In the system of low turbidity, addition of Al-based coagulants was the main cause leading to increase of residual aluminum in effluent water, while in the system of high turbidity, the Al-based coagulants, especially polymeric aluminum, possessed definite function to remove aluminum. In the coagulation and sedimentation processes, the total residual aluminum amount of traditional aluminum coagulants was higher obviously than that of polymeric aluminum coagulants. All the residual aluminum of polymeric aluminum was suspended aluminum. There existed also colloidal aluminum and soluble aluminum in the residual aluminum of traditional coagulants. The contents of colloidal aluminum and soluble aluminum in residual aluminum could be enhanced by the increate of turbidity and the concentration of DOC of raw water.
