The Potential of TM35 in Enhancing Drought and Freezing Resistance of Sugar Beets

Abstract:Cultivation of sugar beet ( Beta vulgaris L. subsp. vulgaris ) is vital for sugar and industrial uses, but it faces challenges like drought and cold in northern regions of China. Enhancing stress tolerance, especially in seedlings, is crucial. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the influence of TM35 (mepiquat chloride (MC) production waste) on sugar beet seedlings. We added varying concentrations of TM35 (0, 0.5, 1, 2, and 4% relative to soil dry weight) into the soil. After 20 days of cultivation, we assessed the growth, physiological indicators, and nutrient levels of sugar beet seedlings, followed by a second round of measurements after subjecting the sugar beets to drought and freezing stress. Under normal conditions, TM35 reduced sugar beet height, leaf area, and osmoregulatory substances (soluble protein, soluble sugar, proline), but boosted biomass, leaf number, photosynthesis (Pn), and chlorophyll. Under drought or freezing stress, TM35 had the same effects on growth as under normal conditions. It also reduced electrolyte leakage (EL) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in sugar beet leaves, increased osmoregulatory substances (soluble proteins, soluble sugars, proline), and decreased antioxidant enzyme activities (peroxidase, POD; superoxide dismutase, SOD; catalase, CAT; ascorbate peroxidase, APX). Notably, TM35 increased the survival of sugar beet seedlings under freezing stress. Based on the growth of sugar beet seedlings under normal conditions and the combined growth and physiological responses of sugar beet under drought and freezing stress, applying 0.5% TM35 in soil under normal conditions can promote the growth of sugar beet, while applying 2% TM35 under drought or freezing stress can improve the resistance of sugar beet to stress.
