Abstract:The strategy on repair and strengthening of existing bridges based on time-dependent reliability was analyzed with the maximum expected benefit as the objective function. A sample of risk-ranking decision was illustrated based on updated inspection information with 35 survival age. The effect of improvement of live loads and difference of repair methods on time-dependent reliability of existing bridges are considered. The results show that the decision method can be used in real project, with the cost of failure consequence and the risk of failure considered.

Abstract:The reliability of ultimate limit state and serviceability limit state are both important for structure safety evaluation.Sometimes,the reliability of serviceability limit state is the critical target for existing structure in use.Therefore,the characteristics of the reliability analysis on serviceability limited state for existing reinforced concrete bridges were discussed.The effect of the improvement of live load and the difference of fuzzy failure bounds on reliability was studied.With crack width as the analysis parameter of normal limited state,the calculation of a reinforced concrete bridge was demonstrated on the basis of updated inspection information.

Abstract:The life-cycle reliability of engineering structures was analyzed from a historic viewpoint.Review of historic failure accidents reveals that the structure reliability under ordinary loads and ordinary use purpose can be ensured by current design codes.However,there are still many things to be understood especially regarding structure reliability in construction/aging stages and even more things to be investigated regarding structure safety in some extraordinary conditions such as explosion,shock and fire.The state-of-the-art of these problems were reviewed,especially regarding reliability problems analyzed from the viewpoint of load-resistance distribution model,structure failure probability-(acceptable) target failure probability and sensitivity analysis-structure modification.Due to the difference of load-resistance distribution model and the target failure probability,the well-known load and resistance factor design(LRFD) method may not be an effective approach.

Abstract:By combination of the 3-D finite element method with the response surface method, a reliability analysis is made of the structure of the open-spandrel truss-arch type prestressed aqueduct, which has been widely used in the South-to-North Water Transfer Middle Route Project. The result shows that the reliability of the aqueduct structure meets the design requirement, and that the response surface method is an effective method for reliability analysis of the aqueduct structure of the open-spandrel truss-arch type.

Abstract:Technique to quantitatively analyze the reliability of digital protection was proposed. The paper defines the protection availability and protection economical index. They can quantitatively evaluate the relay's reliability. The failure model of hardware/software and seven states space of digital protection equipment are set up. The analysis method is used to calculate the proposed two parameters. An application in a practical protective production was given to demon strate the proposed techniques. Meanwhile, by the variable parameters method, the product's reliability sensitivity was analyzed to find the critical factors in reliability. The result shows that the technique is applicable to quantitatively evaluate the reliability of digital protection.

Abstract:The correct and reasonable calculation of the structural reliability is the theoretical basis of the design, construction and use of the structure. The research is focused on the development of computing methods of reliability of structural members and system, and also points out the merits and problems of the existing methods with respect to the analysis of the present researches on structural reliability. Meanwhile, the summarization of the development and the existing problems on the reliability of time dependent structure has been provided. Furthermore, it proposes that correlation is the common problem in the computing of structural system reliability, and probes into the correlation coefficient of the calculation and the effects that correlation coefficient exerts on random variables and different systems. The conclusion shows that the specification of the adaptation range of calculation methods and reducing the effects of correlation coefficient contribute to the insurance of the structural safety.

Abstract:In view of the significant failure modes of formwork-supporting system and reinforced- concrete member, the reliability analysis model of time-dependent system affected by human errors during the construction of typical multistory reinforced-concrete buildings was developed. Human Reliability Analysis (HRA) method was applied to simulate the error rates and error magnitudes of the reinforced-concrete members and the formwork-supporting system, and human reliability models were developed, two cases for error-free case and error-included case were considered. Furthermore the check emphasis of formwork-supporting system was pointed during multistory building construction.

Abstract:This paper gives a new more practical software reliability model based on architectures of software components. This model uses semi-Markov chain and can give the quantitative evaluation about the digital protection's software. It analyzes the relation between the material architecture of software's modules and the reliability of software, then changes the model into a semi-Markov one based on the architecture of software's modules. Besides having the characters of the former model, this one have the ability to emulate the reliability in the situation which is the software having complex architecture or the system having the capability about paratactic calculating. Furthermore, the variable parameter method is used to study the sensitivity in order to find the vital factors of reliability. An example is given to demo the proposed techniques. The calculation results prove that the algorithm is viable. © 2005 IEEE.

Abstract:Typhoon is one of the most destructive natural calamities. Statistical data on 1949–1990 typhoons in China were used to analyze the frequency and strength of the typhoons, the relation between them and the average global ground temperature. The probability distribution of wind speed and the load of low buildings were obtained respectively on the basis of statistical data on the No. 9015 and No. 9711 typhoon. The finite element method and experimental comparison were used to obtained the probability distribution of lateral force resistance of a three-story brick-concrete building. Finally, the reliability indexes of this kind of building under No. 9015 and No. 9711 typhoon; and some valuable suggestions are given.

Abstract:Considering the two aspects of applicability and durability, this paper discusses four factors on which the serviceability in limited state depends: the width of transverse crack, the deflection of concrete member, the depth of concrete carbonation anti-crack of longitudinal crack and the width of longitudinal crack. The analysis shows that the coefficients of the calculation mode have most important influence on the reliability based on the serviceability in limited state for concrete structural members, and that the loads also have other influences. Due to the concrete discreteness, the material property of the concrete is the other important influential factor.

Abstract:The safety analysis of reinforced concrete buildings during construction should be based on the comprehensive understanding of loads, load effects, structural resistance, and available safety index of the structure. This paper analyzes the characteristics and probabilistic models of resistance, loads, and load effects. A method was developed to calculate the probability of failure based on Monte Carlo simulation and models proposed in previous articles. Construction examples were used to analyze the influence of live load on the probability of failure. The results show that when the live load increases, the maximum probability of failure increases with acceleration. The results suggest that the construction live load should be carefully addressed during construction.

Abstract:The safety of complex spatial structures in operation depends highly on the reliability of the whole system and its structural components. In order to determine the relationship between system reliability and reliability of its components, reliability block diagram (RBD) method, which emphasises depicting the connection mode among all the components of a system, is employed for system reliability analysis of spatial structures. With the assumption of geometric stability, a new approach, aiming at finding out key elements where damage could lead to overall collapse of the structure, is adopted here for the logic relationship identification among components. The logic relationship, which is considered as the core component of the reliability block diagram, is utilised for reliability analysis of the system and the predetermined components. Finally, a large-span latticed grid spatial structure is investigated to validate the applicability of the RBD method for analysing the system reliability of spatial structures.

Abstract:The checking calculation of carrying capacity,displacement,and crack of concrete structure is an important part of the reliability of identification in building.SATWE,JDJG,and GJ are frequently used in reliability of identification.In this paper,feature of three software will be introduced and evaluated briefly.SATWE is used in multi-storey and high-rise concrete structure of the overall security identification.JDJG is used in multi-storey and high-rise concrete structure of the seismic capacity identification.GJ is used in beam,column,and floor of single component of checking calculation and analyzing deflection or crack.Structural calculation software is usually used in design,however,reliability of identification calculation is still lack of program.So,the related research is necessary.

Abstract:The falling accident of a building's curtain wall may bring adverse social impact and economic loss. It is therefore of great importance to efficiently and reliably identify the security status of existing curtain walls. Current safety appraisal methods for glass curtain walls are facing the adverse effect of a large amount of imperfect information and subjective indicators. There are shortcomings of these methods, such as: i) The appraisal rank is easily affected by subjective judging, ii) The key appraisal indicators are not clear, and iii) The top-level indicators are not scientifically determined and systematically evaluated through the lower-level indicators. This paper takes existing hidden frame glass curtain wall as the research object, divides the safety grade of curtain walls into four fuzzy ranks (fine, good, poor and dangerous) and establishes five levels of appraisal hierarchy for components. An appraisal weight determination system is established for existing hidden frame glass curtain walls in three aspects (appearance, material testing and bearing capacity testing) based on a survey among experienced curtain wall experts from diverse areas and professions. The frequency statistics method is used to determine the weights of the indicators. The ranks of quantitative and qualitative indicators are quantified using fuzzy theory. Finally, applicability of the proposed safety appraisal model is verified with a real project. The appraisal result obtained through the proposed models is consistent with the actual situation on a real project.
Study on Safety Degree for Existing RC Structural Elements Based on Calculated Reliability

Abstract:Considering the subsequent service life and resistance attenuation of existing RC structural elements,using the calculated reliability indexes of civil RC structural elements in separate conditions,the relationship between the calculated reliability indexes of elements and the safety degree are analyzed.Coupling the quantitative calculation of reliability indexes for existing RC structural elements with the qualitative estimation for appraisal degree,the calculated reliability indexes standard for the estimation of safety degree is given based on the calculation and comparison with demand of design codes.The presented quantitative method of safety degree appraising for civil structures can be used in the appraising for existing structural elements.The appraised safety degrees are consistent with the calculating results using design codes,and the quantitative calculation for safety degrees of civil structural elements can be implemented.

Abstract:The inspection and repair of deteriorating structures are scheduled according to the as-sessments of the time-varying structural reliability. The uncertain parameters of the structural sys-tems and their initial strength are described as random variables, and the evolution process of the strength degradation is regarded as the Gamma process. The fourth moment method based on fre-quency curve of Pearson was used to solve the problem of reliability calculation with random parame-ters of arbitrary distributions. Formulas for calculating the reliability sensitivity with respect to the mean and the variance of the random variables were derived. The reliability analysis of the bulkhead was taken as an example to verify the proposed method. The results showed that the method could effectively solve the problem of the reliability sensitivity of structural systems to strength degradation.

Abstract:In engineering structures, the safety problems are always depending on the respond of structures to different types of load. The safety assessment of a high rise building is highly depending on the analysis of environmental load. Many codes and practices have proposed many requirements for engineers in the design works. These include safety factors, limitations on damage, maximum deflections and so on. When violations in these requirements occur, the structure is believed to be dangerous. But once the problem becomes complicated such as multiple unknown loads in one building, it requires reliability analysis in the design. It must take care of all the assumptions and uncertainties in the structural design. In probabilistic assessment, any input variable is considered as an uncertainty. However, the traditional way to deal with these problems may have problems when uncertainties are large. Many probabilistic safety measures need to be reconsidered in engineering work. This paper, we will provide reliability analysis on a high rise building with consideration of wind load. All the most commonly applied reliability methods are been utilized in this analysis and compared base on the performance. The statistical influences including correlation and distribution type are also discussed in the same reliability problem.
Appraisal on Stability of Yingxian Wooden Tower

Abstract:Taking Yingxian Wooden Tower for example and based on the investigation and research in site, a finite element model is established for the whole second visible floor of the tower in order to refine the structure of the column foot,simulate and analyze the overall deformation of the second visible floor and the internal force of the column foot and beams in the different displacement of columns,then discuss the possible failure mode of the tower,and make the assessment for the stability of the tower.The results show that the damage on the second visible floor of the tower starts with the instability of the southwest column.The column foot will get hurt when the maximum tensile stress of the column foot exceeds its limit, and the column foot will be completely destroyed if the departure distance between the top and foot of the column reaches 685 mm. The stress of the column foot has been in damage interval.The probability of instability will increase if the tower suffers from disturbance seriously.
