Abstract:To overcome the disadvantages of the limit equilibrium method and the finite element method on evaluation the stability of slope with the weak structural plane, the elastic-plastic finite element method, the Goodman joint element and the limit equilibrium method are utilized together, and two concepts, that are the joint element safety factor and the node yielding degree, are introduced to evaluate the slope stability with the weak structural plane, and the correspond calculation codes are programmed. Finally, a man-made slope case is analyzed to validate the numerical model and program codes. The stress, strain, displacement, the node yielding degree of the slope and the force of weak structural plane are calculated by elastic-plastic finite element method, and the element safety factor of the slope with the weak structural plane are calculated with the limit equilibrium method. That numerical results are agree well with the engineering fact indicates the program coded are reliable, and the proposed numerical model and two introduced concepts can not only consider the influence of the relation of stress and strain on the slope stability, but also evaluate the stability of the slope with single stability factor of safety which is well known in geotechnical engineering. All of above are meaningful to evaluated the slope stability and provide a new and simple numerical approach.

Abstract:The Monte Carlo method combined with the elastoplastic finite element method(FEM) is proposed to analyze the slope stability problems. The factor of safety is calculated with the aid of stress fields and the pore pressure field obtained from the finite element analysis. The trial slip surfaces are verified frequently by the random walking method and gradually tend to the critical slip surface. The global minimum factor of safety can be found by comparing the results of a number of trial slip surfaces. The proposed method can solve the problems of falling into local minima,which most regular optimization methods are prone to be,by the random search methods. On the other side,the proposed method can also consider the influence of the change of stress fields and pore pressure field on the minimum factor of safety by the finite element analysis. Numerical examples are analyzed to show the feasibility of the proposed method.

Abstract:The initial terrain of a slope has a significant impact on the stability and stress state during excavation. In this study, the theory of elastic stress solutions under concentrated loads at the top of a wedge-shaped body was employed to develop a method for calculating the slope stress field and stability, considering terrain effects during excavation. The rationality of this method was validated by comparing the changes in the safety factor, stress of the sliding surface, and position of the sliding surface using the limit equilibrium method (LEM) and finite element method (FEM). The research findings indicated the following: (1) A sliding surface search method was proposed, leading to the development of a slope unloading stress analysis method (USAM) considering the influence of terrain. This method allows for the rapid and straightforward determination of the stress field and safety factor of the excavated slope simultaneously. (2) When the USAM was applied to analyze slopes with small heights, the safety factor tended to be slightly larger. This phenomenon can be attributed to the assumption made in the elastic stress solution theory for wedge tops subjected to concentrated loads. However, this assumption does not significantly affect the stability analysis of high slopes. (3) The calculated sliding surface stresses and potential sliding surface positions were close to those derived using the strength reduction method. This study introduces a new perspective for slope stability analyses and stress field solutions that consider terrain effects.

Abstract:A new, simplified method is described to evaluate the stability level of a strain-softening slope. This method was established via expanding the traditional slice method and proposing a simplified strain compatibility equation. The stability analysis of a homogeneous slope showed that the stability of a strain-softening slope is dependent not only on the strength parameters but also significantly on the stress–strain relationship of the soil. The safety factor and corresponding critical slip surface obtained using the present method locate between the ones obtained using the traditional slice method with the peak and residue strength parameters, respectively.

Abstract:Limit equilibrium methods are widely used for the stability analysis of slopes, embankments and excavations, These methods do not satisfy the overall equilibrium conditions, consequently several assumptions regarding the interslice forces must be made for the problem to be solvable. Based on the ideas of the limit analysis and the rigid finite element method, a slope stability method is proposed in this paper to avoid these drawbacks. A slope is treated as a number of slices with any arbitrary polyhedral shape connected by elastoplastic interfaces, All overall equilibrium conditions and yielding criteria are satisfied. Without imposing any assumptions regarding the interslice forces, the aforementioned shortcomings of limit equilibrium methods are avoided. Furthermore, the interslice forces are so adjusted by the limit analysis method that the mechanism of progressive failure of a slope, which has a significant effect on the overall factor of safety for brittle soil, is inherently considered in the present method, Non-linear programming is also used to search for the true slip surface, which corresponds to the minimum factor of safety, among all possible slip surfaces. The formulation proposed here satisfies both the static and kinematic admissibility conditions without requiring any assumptions regarding the interslice forces. It can also be used to obtain the failure mechanisms of a slope, The present method can be used to estimate the factor of safety of a complicated slope, the bearing capacity of foundations and the Lateral earth pressure between a soil mass and adjoining retaining structure.
Strength reduction material point method for slope stability

Abstract:The material point method, employing updated Lagrangian formulation, can be used to simulate the failure process of slopes. The strength reduction material point method is proposed to analyze slope stability, based on the generalized interpolation material point method and the elastoplastic constitutive model. The detailed procedure is as follows. Firstly, the grid is divided and all the material points are identified. Then, an incremental gravitation model is employed to eliminate the stress oscillation and to determine the initial stress field of slope. Finally, the parameters of the soil strength are reduced, and the safety factor is determined according to the distribution of the plastic zone as well as the deformation of the soil. The illustration shows the results of the strength reduction material point method are almost identical with those of strength reduction finite element method. Meanwhile, the slope failure criterion of the strength reduction material point method may use the fact whether a sudden displacement change occurs along the vertical direction of the slope crest. Also, using strength reduction material point method, it is discovered that even the plastic zone breaks through under a certain reduction coefficient, the slope still remains stable, and no sudden displacement change will occur immediately. The proposed method offers a new idea for the analysis of slope stability.
A Displacement-Based Method for Evaluating the Stability of a Pile-Stabilized Slope

Abstract:This study proposes a theoretical model for evaluating the safety factor of a pile-stabilized slope using the monitored displacement of the sliding layer. The stabilizing force provided by the piles was determined using the subgrade reaction method, with the monitored displacement of the sliding layer as the primary input parameter. The sliding layer of the slope was considered as a rigid body sliding along the slip surface, assumed to be viscous-perfectly plastic with a Mohr-Coulomb failure condition. Based on the proposed model, the real-time safety factor of the slope could be determined using the limit equilibrium method based on the monitored displacement of the sliding layer. The model was applied to the Hongyan landslide to demonstrate its effectiveness. The results indicated that the model could reasonably predict the safety factor, offering practical convenience for engineers.
Limit equilibrium analysis method based on vector sum method for 3D slope

Abstract:The 2D limit equilibrium method is not suitable to analyze the stability of slope with complicated geometry. Based on the definition of vector sum factor of safety, a general limit equilibrium method, which satisfies the three force equilibriums for all columns and the three moment equilibriums for total failure mass, was proposed. The lateral shear factors and lateral shear distribution functions were introduced to simplify the interslice force distribution, and all interslice forces were taken into account in calculating the safety factor. The safety factors for each row and column were obtained by force equilibriums and boundary conditions for total failure mass, and the lateral shear factors were determined by solving the torque-equilibrium equations for total failure mass. The vector sum factor was determined according to the vector characteristics of forces against the tendency direction which is the opposite direction of the sum of the shears along the sliding surface. A classical example was adopted to validate the presented method. The numerical results showed that fully consideration of interslice forces improves the safe factor of 3D slope.

Abstract:A modified slip surface stress method is proposed with the concept of vector sum and rigorous force analysis. Theoretically, the proposed method could degenerate into the existing methods by adding the corresponding assumptions. Through five typical slope cases, comparisons are made among the Factor of Safety (FoS) calculated by the proposed method and others. Results show that the proposed method could evaluate slopes at the limit state. Moreover, the proposed method is capable to calculate the FoS of the potential slip mass for both homogeneous and heterogeneous cases with regular or irregular slip surface in both two- and three-dimension spaces. Also, the proposed method could give the potential slip direction of a slope, which is useful for the design of measures to reinforce the slope.

Abstract:The finite element limit equilibrium method (FELEM) is increasingly used in slope stability analyses. The greatest advantage of the FELEM is its time-saving analysis process, which does not require the iterative strength reduction process used in the strength reduction finite element method. The conventional FELEM calculates stresses using the finite element method with the elastic-perfectly plastic Mohr-Coulomb model and searches for the critical slip surface with the minimum safety factor. To further enhance and broaden the applicability of the FELEM, a 2D and 3D slope stability FELEM using elastic finite element stress fields is proposed. Five typical soil slope problems, a 2D rock slope problem involving a nonlinear failure model and a 3D shallow slope problem are adopted to validate the proposed FELEM. The results indicate that this method can be applied to solve various slope problems.

Abstract:A limit equilibrium method that satisfies the three force equilibrium conditions of all columns and three moment equilibrium conditions of total failure mass is proposed,in which the interslice forces are assumed by proposed lateral shear factors and lateral shear distribution functions.The present formulation can be treated as an extension of the 2D Morgenstern-Price.technique.The factor of safety of each row(column) is obtained by solving the force equilibrium equations and the boundary conditions of total failure;then the lateral shear factors are determined by solving the torque-equilibrium equations for total failure mass.All intercolumn forces are taken into account in calculating factor of safety.The direct iterative algorithm is implemented in the program developed by the authors to improve the computational efficiency markedly.The analysis results for two examples indicate that the given η1,η3,η4 have a small effect on the factor of safety for symmetrical slope and the given.4 also has a slight effect on the factor of safety for asymmetric slope;and these factors of safety obtained in the new formulation are similar to those in previous studies.It is not necessarily true for some composite slip surfaces that a more simplified formulation will give a lower factor of safety.

Abstract:A linear failure criterion is widely used in slope stability analyses. However, the strength envelope of almost all geomaterials has the nature of nonlinearity. This paper computes rigorous upper bounds on slope stability factors under the condition of plane strain with a nonlinear yield criterion by employing the upper bound theorem of plasticity. A stability factor (or a limit load) computed using a linear Mohr-Coulomb (MC) failure criterion which circumscribes the actual nonlinear failure criterion is an upper bound value of the actual stability factor (or limit load). In this paper, an improved method using a generalized tangential technique to approximate a nonlinear failure criterion is proposed to estimate the stability factor of a slope on the basis of the upper bound theorem of plasticity. Using the generalized tangential technique, the curve of the nonlinear failure criterion is simplified as a set of straight lines according to the linear MC failure criterion. The straight line is tangential to the curve of the nonlinear failure criterion. The set of straight lines of the linear MC failure criterion is employed to formulate the slope stability problem as a classical optimization problem. The objective function formulated in this way is minimized with respect to the location of sliding body center and the location of tangency point. Two typical slope stability problems (a homogeneous soil slope with two slope angles and a vertical cut slope with a tension crack) are analyzed using the proposed method. For the soil slope with two slope angles, the computed results are compared with published solutions by others. The comparison shows that the proposed method gives reasonable and consistent values of the stability factor of the slope. For the vertical cut slope with a tension crack, a statically admissible stress field is constructed for the slope. The stress field does not violate the nonlinear failure criterion. Lower bound solutions are obtained by satisfying stress equilibrium conditions. The upper bound solutions obtained from the proposed method are equal to the lower bound solutions for the vertical cut slope. The agreement further supports the validation of the proposed approach. The influences of the strength parameters in the nonlinear criterion on the stability of slopes are also studied and discussed in this paper.

Abstract:The rigid-body limit equilibrium method cannot reflect actual stress distribution in rock mass, and finite-element-based strength reduction method also has some problems in judging convergence of nonlinear calculation. To address these problems, the article adopts multi-grid method to establish structural grid for computation of finite element method and slip surface grid for computing safety factor of slope stability respectively, which can easily work out stability safety factor of any slip surface or slide block, and consequently bring together nonlinear finite element method and limit equilibrium analysis. The method has been implemented in TFINE, a nonlinear three dimensional finite element method program, and then it was applied in stability analysis of Jinping high slope. The contrastive analysis with results of the rigid-body limit equilibrium method has demonstrated that the computational results are larger than that of the rigid-body limit equilibrium method and better accorded with practical conditions as the nonlinear stress adjustment in calculation is considered.

Abstract:The upper bound limit analysis approach,which is based on the upper bound theorem,is one of the familiar methods for slope stability problems.The key of the approach is the construction of kinematically admission failure pattern.According to the Mohr-Coulomb’s yield criterion and its associative flow rule,a novel slope stability analysis method is presented.In the method,the collapse mechanism is assumed to be in the form of rigid blocks analogous to slices in traditional slice methods and takes the translational and rotational velocities of slice into account at the same time.The purely translational and purely rotational velocity fields are two special cases of the presented mechanism of failure.Numerical examples illustrate that the proposed approach gives lower factor of safety than the purely translational one,and the results are also compared with those given by the conventional limit equilibrium method.

Abstract:Ensuring the stability of slopes is critical to the safe operation of geotechnical engineering. Evaluating slope stability to minimize geologic risks induced by destabilization is significant in reducing casualties and property damage. A conventional, single-coefficient strength reduction method is widely applied in slope stability analyses, but this method ignores the attenuation degree of different parameters in the slope destabilization. A new double-strength reduction method considering different contributions of the mechanics' parameters is proposed in this study for evaluating the stability of nonhomogeneous slope. First, the role of each mechanic's parameters in the slope destabilization was investigated theoretically and numerically using ABAQUS software 2022. The results indicate that the effect of elasticity (E), Poisson's ratio (v), and soil gravity (γ) on the evolution of factor of safety (FOS) are insignificant and can be neglected compared with cohesive force (c), and angle of internal friction (φ). Next, an improved method was constructed to correlate the FOS with cohesive force (c) and the angle of internal friction (φ). Then, a numerical method was constructed based on the computation of the mathematical–mechanical relationship between FOS and the mechanical parameters, and the stability of slope is estimation based on the Mohr–Coulomb yield criterion. Finally, the double-strength reduction coefficient method proposed in this study, the limit equilibrium method, and the traditional finite element strength reduction coefficient method were applied to nonhomogeneous slopes and slopes containing a soft underlying layer for comparison, and the difference between them was within the range of ±5%. The results indicate that both the limit equilibrium method and the traditional finite element strength reduction method tend to overestimate the FOS of intricate slopes compared with the evaluated method proposed in this study. This parallel comparison serves to validate the accuracy of the double-strength reduction method proposed in the present study. Further, based on the proposed method, the relationship between slope stability and slope displacement is established, which provides a theoretical basis for the safety assessment of slope engineering.

Abstract:The adjustment of nonlinear stress is not taken into account in the limit equilibrium analysis of rigid body; and it is difficult to judge the convergence of the shear strength reduction method with FEM. To solve these problems, based on multi-grid method, structure grid for nonlinear FEM and sliding surface grid for calculating safety factor were established separately. So the sliding safety factor of arbitrary sliding surface or sliding blocks can be obtained. Thus limit equilibrium analysis can be integrated with nonlinear FEM. To increase calculating scale and speed, a 3-D parallel finite element code based on element-by-element method, TFINE. Pfem, is developed and used. The influence on result precision by grid were analyzed. Then it is applied to the stability analysis of Jinping high slope. The contrast analysis show that the safety factor obtained from the method proposed is larger than that of limit equilibrium analysis of rigid body because of considering of adjustment of nonlinear stress. The method porposed is accord with real conditions.

Abstract:Stability assessment based on failure mechanisms is extremely crucial for slope quantitative evaluation. In this study, a vector sum particle flow method is proposed based on the mechanism of stepped tensile failure. This mechanism involves the mechanical behavior, lithology, and fracture properties. Furthermore, the proposed fracture criteria are reflected in the particle contact model of the 2D Particle Flow Code using a predefined strength envelope. Mesoscopic parameters are calibrated according to a certain strength parameter relationship, thereby realizing the construction of a vector sum numerical model. The failure evolution process of four slopes with different stepped crack arrangements is analyzed. Based on the analysis results, the stability analysis process of the slope is elaborated. This research analyzes the stability of the above four slopes and examines the stability of different failure stages during the formation of the sliding plane. The proposed method provides more accurate calculation results compared to the limit equilibrium method and gravity increase method. It accurately reflects the actual stress state of the sliding plane and indirectly considers the impact of the crack arrangement. The findings of this study are highly valuable for evaluating the stability of slopes experiencing stepped failure.

Analysis of slope slip surface by three-dimension finite element method

Abstract:A new method in which the threedimension slope slip surface and stability can be analyzed by the potential slip surface theory is presented in this paper. According to the stress analysis results of elasticplastic finite element method,the method makes sure of potential slip surfaces,the most dangerous potential slip surfaces and stability safety factor of slope by means of numerical value integral, and the method has tight theoretical basis. Through analysis of many threedimension slope engineering examples, it shows that the slope stability safety factor and the most dangerous slip surface using the twodimension method are quite different from that using threedimension method, and the threedimension slope should be analyzed by the threedimension method.

Abstract:This article analyze the slope stability by strength reduction method named Phi-c which supplied by FE software PLAXIS. The reduction factor is suggest to be the safety factor of the slope at the moment when the slope reaches instability, the numerical non-convergence occurs simultaneously. The position of sliding surface and dynamic simulation of instability can be obtain as well. This article has compared the results calculated by other methods Bishop and ABAQUS with difference between 2%-3% which attest to its accuracy and practicability in engineering.
