Abstract:The recycled concrete has limited its' range of application because of the defects of the recycled aggregate: rich in impurity,high in porosity,large in water absorbability,low in strength.The intensified test research shows that the utilization of polypropylene fiber and silica fume can obviously improve the recycled concrete's mechanics performance and increase its strength.The influence of different content of polypropylene fiber and silica fume on the strength of the recycled concrete is also studied in the paper.It can offer the theoretical foundation for the actual project application.

Abstract:The effect of length-diameter ratio and volumetric fraction of steel fiber on mechanical properties and fracture performance of Layer Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete have been experimentally studied.Compared the mechanical properties and fracture performance of Layer Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete with Normal Concrete and Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete,the results show that Layer Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete improves the mechanical properties,enhances the fracture toughness and fracture energy of concrete.

Abstract:Polypropylene fibrous concrete is a new kind of composite material. Polypropylene fiber leads to an increase in the resisting strength, cracking resistance performance, resistance to impact performance and permeability reducing performance of the concrete, thus reduces the shrinking and deformation of the concrete. This paper uses the method of numerical analysis, assisted by the software of finite element analysis, makes both static and dynamic analysis on the polypropylene fibrous concrete ditch with different volume mixing. It results in the stress and strain table of the head and base plates of the polypropylene fibrous concrete ditch in the case of 0.1%, 0.5%, and 1% volume mixing of polypropylene fibers. The paper provides technological basis for formation design of the polypropylene fibrous concrete materials, and laids technological foundation for the further developments of polypropylene fibrous concrete in hydraulic engineering.
Experimental study on effects of polypropylene fiber on early-age shrinkage in concrete

Abstract:The effects of early-age shrinkage and workability of concrete were investigated by adding the different additions of polypropylene fibers in the same water-cement ratio condition.The results indicate that polypropylene fibers can reduce the degree of early-age shrinkage of concrete within limits.With the addition of polypropylene fibers increasing,the degree of shrinkage of concrete increases.However,the change of the degree of shrinkage of concrete becomes slowly with the excess addition of polypropylene fibers.At the same time the addition of polypropylene fibers bringing an obvious slump loss to fresh concrete,so many factors must be considered such as the effect of shrinkage and slump of concrete and the cost of concrete to determine the best addition of polypropylene fibers.In this experiment,the best addition of polypropylene fibers is 0.9kg/m3 or 0.1%(volume ratio).
Strength and Early Crack Resistance Experiment of Polypropylene Fiber Reinforced Concrete with Silicon Powder

Abstract:The influence of polypropylene fiber (PPF) and silicon powder (SP) on strength and early crack resistance of concrete was investigated using indoor experiments. The microscopic mechanism was interpreted using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results indicate that PPF is of little influence on concrete compressive and tensile strength, however can significantly improve concrete early crack resistance performance. Moreover, SP can increases concrete compactness and strength, while has little effects on concrete early crack resistance performance. The reasonable mixing amount of PPF and SP are suggested, which provide a reference for related engineering application.

Abstract:The aim of the study is to validate the effect of glass fiber and polypropylene fiber on improving the mechanical and durability properties of concrete. In this regard, glass fiber, polypropylene fiber and hybrid fiber were added to concrete, respectively. This paper conducted the compressive and bending flexural tests to confirm that the fiber enhances the mechanical properties of concrete. In order to evaluate the durability of fiber reinforced concrete, the rapid chloride migration test and rapid chloride penetration test were carried out. The comparisons of experimental results illustrate that the hybrid fiber reinforced concrete has the most significant effect on the concrete properties improvements. Moreover, comparing with the glass fiber reinforced concrete, the polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete plays a better performance on mechanical and durability properties.

Abstract:Recycled concrete reinforced by polypropylene fibers boosts an alternative sustainable solution to address the need of reusing waste concrete. This paper reports experimental and analytical studies of static and dynamic comprehensive behavior on recycled concrete specimens reinforced with different contents of polypropylene fiber (PPF). Electro-hydraulic pressure testing was used to obtain static compressive strength, whereas 74 mm diameter Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) was applied for dynamic impact compression tests at four strain rates. In addition, the reinforcing mechanism of polypropylene fiber on recycled concrete was analyzed of the micro-structure through Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Finally, ANSYS/LS-DYNA was applied for the simulation of the SHPB test, which was validated by good agreements of the stress waveform and failure modes of the fiber-reinforced recycled concrete specimen during the impact test. It appears that polypropylene fiber can optimize the microscopic pore structure inside the concrete, thus effectively improving the mechanical properties of recycled concrete which were originally defected by recycled aggregate. Also, higher strain rates significantly increase dynamic compressive strength as well as impact toughness. This study shows that the optimal content of polypropylene fiber in recycled concrete is 0.1%–0.2%. The numerical simulation by ANSYS/LS-DYNA further proved that the HOLMQUIST-JOHNSON-COOK (HJC) constitutive model can better reflect the dynamic performance of concrete.

Abstract:The effects of polypropylene fiber and fly ash on workability and mechanical properties were investigated. The results show that compared with those of common concrete, after adding 1.0‰. polypropylene fiber into the concrete, the slump loss of concrete decreases and bleeding ratio decreases 35%, compressive strength of fiber reinforced concrete changed slightly, but splitting tensile strength, flexural strength and ratio of splitting tensile strength to compressive strength of fiber reinforced concrete at age of 28 days increases 45%, 19% and 46%. When polypropylene fiber and fly ash are added into the concrete together, slump loss of concrete are similar to that of fiber reinforced concrete, however, bleeding ratio, splitting tensile strength and flexural strength are improved.

Abstract:In order to examine the compressive dynamic performance of polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete to be used for the retaining structure under the automobile collision magnitude, an experimental study was carried out by using hydraulic servo on concrete specimens with 4 different polypropylene fiber contents under 6 loading strain rates. The failure modes and stress-strain curves of concrete under different loading conditions were obtained. Then, by comparatively analyzing the mechanical characteristic parameters of polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete under different loading conditions, the following conclusions are drawn: with the increase of the polypropylene fiber content, the integrity of concrete upon compressive failure is gradually improved. When the polypropylene fiber content is relatively high, the static and dynamic failure modes are basically similar. With the increase of the loading strain rate, the peak compressive stress and elastic modulus of the polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete gradually increase. The increase in the polypropylene fiber content gradually intensifies the effect of loading strain rate on the peak compressive stress dynamic improvement coefficient. The peak strain of polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete is gradually increased with the increase of polypropylene fiber content, while the effect of the loading strain rate on the peak strain shows an obvious discreteness characteristic. Meanwhile, we proposed a relationship equation for describing the peak compressive stress dynamic improvement coefficient based on the coupling effect of the polypropylene fiber content and loading strain rate and further discussed the underlying stress mechanism in detail. Our research findings are of important research significance for the application and promotion of polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete in the engineering practice of retaining structures.

Abstract:Flexural strength,flexural toughness,flexural impact and flexural fatigue behaviors of polypropylene synthetic macro-fiber reinforced concrete are researched experimentally.The effects of fiber content on mechanical properties are analyzed,and the strengthening mechanism of polypropylene synthetic macro-fiber is discussed.The results show that when fiber content is 9~13 kg/m3,relative residual strength of polypropylene synthetic macro-fiber reinforced concrete is 49%~66%,impact toughness and fatigue lift are 1.25~6.76 times and 100%~389%larger than that of plain concrete respectively,which indicates that the polypropylene synthetic macro-fiber can improve significantly the mechanical properties.

Abstract:This investigation examined the reinforcing effects and mechanisms of polypropylene fiber (PF) on the physical and mechanical properties of concrete. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to observe the crystal structures and that at the aggregate-cement interfacial transition zone. Physical and mechanical tests were performed to measure the effects of PF on improving concrete's engineering properties. Results indicate that PF significantly alters the microstructure of concrete, reduces the crystallization and orientation of Ca(OH)2, and decreases micro-voids. Specifically, PF forms a network that restricts the growth of Ca(OH)2, bridges cracking, and reallocates stresses. PF has reduced the amount and size of crystalline, and the micro-cracking at the aggregate-cement interfacial transition zone. As a result, PF has effectively improved concrete's compressive strength, flexural strength, bonding strength, dynamic performance, and fatigue life, while reduced the water penetration and abrasion mass loss. Results also indicate that a PF content of 0.9kg/m3 has the optimum concrete performance output for the materials used in this study.

Abstract:In order to improve the properties of high strength concrete(HSC),a method of mixing polypropylene into HSC is presented to increase the crack resistance and durability of HSC.The effects of polypropylene on the crack resistance and durability of HSC were studied by testing the brittleness coefficient,characteristic length,permeability coefficient,diffusion coefficient of chloride ion and freeze-thaw resistance of HSC containing polypropylene.Test results show that the polypropylene fiber can decrease the brittleness coefficient,characteristic length,permeability coefficient and diffusion coefficient of chloride ion,and improve the frost resistance,which means that it can improve the crack resistance and durability of HSC effectively.

Abstract:The latest experimental studies indicate that polypropylene fiber is able to remarkably enhance the ability of concrete to resist impact loading and crack. This paper further studies the dynamic behavior and constitutive model of polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete (PFRC) at high strain rate. PFRC specimens with various polypropylene fiber content (0, 0.8, 1.2, 1.6, 2.0, 5.0 kg/m(3)) are tested by utilizing the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB). Both the quasi-static tests and the SHPB tests were performed to study the effect of fiber content, strain rate and water-cement (w/c) ratio on the dynamic mechanical properties of PFRC. Test results indicate that the dynamic mechanical properties of PFRC such as dynamic strength, dynamic increase factor, peak and ultimate strain, peak and ultimate toughness, are positively affected by strain rate. Polypropylene fiber can improve the impact toughness and crack resistance of concrete and it is more suitable for concrete material with a higher w/c ratio. Finally, the experimental stress-strain curves obtained in SHPB test were fitted by a damage dynamic constitutive model of PFRC on the basis of ZWT constitutive model. The great fitting results prove that the modified model can well describe the dynamic behavior of PFRC. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The geometrical size and modulus of fibers are the main factors influenced the mechanical performances of fiber reinforced concrete. The use of different type of fiber in a suitable combination may potentially improve the overall mechanical performances of concrete and result in performance synergy. This paper studied experimentally the synergic mechanical properties of hybrid fiber reinforced concrete (HyFRC) with different kinds and percents of steel fibers and polypropylene fiber, to find out the higher performance of mechanical properties of hybrid fiber reinforced concrete mixtures. Four groups of test specimens with macro and micro-fiber combination of steel fiber and polypropylene fiber were used to investigate the HyFRC's compressive strength, split tensile strength, bending strength and impact resisting performance.

Abstract:This paper presents the tensile strength of steel-polypropylene hybrid fiber reinforced concrete, in which 162 (27 groups) steel-polypropylene hybrid fiber concrete specimens as well as 42 (7 groups) specimens composed of conventional concrete, steel fiber reinforced concrete and polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete are designed on the basis of orthogonal method. The influence of hybrid fiber volume fraction and aspect ratio are investigated based on uniaxial strength test and splitting tensile strength test. The results indicate that the tensile strength of conventional concrete can be dramatically improved by mixing with hybrid steel-polypropylene fibers, with maximum increasing amplitude of 50.1%. The enhancing effect of hybrid fiber is better than that of single fiber, and the volume fraction of steel fiber is observed to have a great impact on the tensile strength. In addition, the equation for calculating the uniaxial tensile strength of steel-polypropylene hybrid fiber reinforced concrete is developed which can be useful for real engineering design.

Abstract:In this paper,the influence of polypropylene fibers on flexural properties of reinforced concrete beams is studied through the tests of plain concrete and polypropylene fibers reinforced concrete beams.The results show that the addition of polypropylene fibers can increase cracking load of flexural members.In certain range of load,fibers have impact on reducing crack width,while it almost has no impact on flexural stiffness of reinforced concrete members.

Abstract:The random distribution of polypropylene fibers in concrete mixtures leads to an increase in abrasion and freeze-thaw resistance, a decrease in volume expansions formed as a result of sulfate attack and alkali silica reaction (ASR). Since the addition of polypropylene fiber in appropriate ratios to concrete mixtures improves the durability properties of the elements, the total cost decreases. The energy absorption capacity of concrete mixtures increases and their plastic shrinkage cracks significantly decrease by polypropylene fiber utilization. This study presents a comprehensive literature review related to history, advantages and disadvantages, workability, mechanical properties, durability performance and dimensional stability of polypropylene fiber-bearing concrete mixtures. For this aim, compressive, tensile and flexural strengths, modulus of elasticity, flexural crack and post-cracking behavior, the resistance of freeze-thaw, sulfate, high-temperature and abrasion as well as alkali-silica reactivity, drying shrinkage-based length change and impact strength of fibrous concrete mixture are thoroughly discussed.

Abstract:In order to study the axial tensile properties of polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete, an axial tensile test device for concrete is developed in this paper. The device is composed of three parts: rigid frame, spherical hinge and puller, and specimen fabrication part. The test device can accurately measure the tensile strength and peak tensile strain of concrete, and perfectly solves the eccentricity problem of concrete specimens under tension. It can measure the post peak segment tensile strain, such that the whole process tensile stress-strain curve can be obtained. The axial tensile test of polypropylene fiber concrete was carried out using the above test device, and the results show that the tensile strength of concrete can be clearly improved by adding polypropylene fiber, which makes the tensile failure of concrete show certain plastic characteristics. The test results show that with the increase in fiber content, the tensile strength of concrete increases first and then decreases. The effects of polypropylene fiber content and curing age on the tensile properties of concrete were studied and the optimum polypropylene fiber content was determined. When the fiber content is 0.9 kg/m3, the tensile strength of concrete reaches the maximum value. The splitting tensile test of concrete under the same condition was carried out simultaneously. The damage phenomenon and test results of the axial tensile test and splitting tensile test of concrete were compared and analyzed, and the applicability of the new developed device in the concrete axial tensile test was verified.

Abstract:In order to understand the engineering properties of soil reinforced by short polypropylene fiber, a series of tests were carried out to study the effect of fiber content and fiber length on the strength of the fiber-reinforced soil, as well as the effect of aggregate size and fiber additives on the engineering properties of the fiber-reinforced soil. It was shown from test results that the unconfined compressive strength (UCS), cohesion, and internal friction angle of fiber-reinforced soil were greater than those of the parent soil; the UCS, cohesion, and internal friction angle of fiber-reinforced soil exhibited an initial increase followed by a rapid decrease with increasing fiber content and fiber length, and hence the optimal fiber content and fiber length were found as 0.3% by weight of the parent soil and 15 mm, respectively, in this investigation. Similar trends were found in the parent soil and the fiber-reinforced soil that the strength declined with an increase in aggregate size and there was a critical size for aggregate breakage between 3.5 and 7.5 mm in average diameter; the presence of polypropylene fiber could effectively contribute to the increases in the strength and stability of the parent soil.
