Abstract:On the basis of analyzing the urban land-economy-society systems, we find out that urban land use system and urban economic-society system have coordination requirements within their scales and structures. Also, an index system is built to appraise the coordination degree between the level of urban land intensive use and the development level of urban economic-society in the Yangtze River Delta by factor analysis. The research is supported by National Natural Science Foundation (40801222, 40601098) and the data are mainly obtained from China City Statistical Yearbook 2007, Jiangsu Statistical Yearbook 2007, Shanghai Statistical Yearbook 2007 and Zhejiang Statistical Yearbook 2007, and the administration boundary is obtained from 1: 1000000 spatial database of the National Fundamental Geographic Information System. The results are summarized into three main parts. Firstly, there are obvious spatial differences in levels of urban land intensive use and the development levels of economic-society and their coordination degrees in the Yangtze River Delta. Secondly, the cities in the Yangtze River Delta can be divided into four types according to the coordination degrees of urban land intensive use level and economic-society development level. Shanghai, Suzhou, Wuxi and Hangzhou have high levels of both urban economic-society development and urban land intensive use, so they are described as double-high-level coordination type cities. Nanjing and Ningbo have high level of urban economic-society development but the level of urban land intensive use is low, so they are described as urban-land- intensive-use-lag in coordination type cities. Zhenjiang, Taizhou, Jiaxing, Huzhou, Shaoxing and Taizhou are low in both urban land intensive use level and urban economic-society development level, so they are described as double-low-level in coordination type cities. Changzhou, Nantong, Yangzhou, Zhoushan have high level of urban land intensive use but low level of urban economic-society development, so they are described as urban-economic-society-development-lag in coordination type cities. Finally, it is recommended that all cities in the Yangtze River Delta should take countermeasures according to their coordination degrees of urban land use system and urban economic-society system.
