Abstract:The low-lying isomers of cationic water cluster (HO) have been globally explored by using particle swarm optimization algorithm in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations. Compared with previous results, our searching method covers a wide range of structural isomers of (HO) and therefore turns out to be more effective. With these local minima, geometry optimization and vibrational analysis are performed for the most interesting clusters at second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2)/aug-cc-pVDZ level, and their energies are further refined at MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ and coupled-cluster theory with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations/aug-cc-pVDZ level. The interaction energies using the complete basis set limits at MP2 level are also reported. The relationships between their structure arrangement and their energies are discussed. Based on the results of thermal simulation, structural change from a four-numbered ring to a tree-like structure occurs at T ≈ 45 K, and the relative population of six lowest-free-energy isomers is found to exceed 4% at some point within the studied temperature range. Studies reveal that, among these six isomers, two new-found isomers constitute 10% of isomer population at 180 K, and the experimental spectra can be better explained with inclusions of the two isomers. The molecular orbitals for six representative cationic water clusters are also studied. Through topological and reduced density gradient analysis, we investigated the structural characteristics and the bonding strengths of these water cluster radical cations.

Abstract:The structures of the ionized water cluster (H2O)(7)(+) are investigated through the particle swarm optimization method combined with ab initio method. Some new lower energy structures are found after geometric optimization at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level when compared with previous report. We studied the effect of the zero point vibrational energies on the relative energy order of these isomers, the relationship between their schemes and their relative energies, and the composition of their foremost molecular orbitals. The relative free energies of (H2O)(7)(+) isomers below 350 K, the infrared spectra of five lowest energy isomers, and their electronic characteristics were discussed in detail, respectively. Based on topological analysis and reduced density gradient analysis, we find that the interaction between H3O+ core and water molecules is stronger than the interaction between OH radical and water molecules by comparing the structural and the bonding strengths within these cationic water clusters. Abstract:The 16 lowest energy isomers of cationic water cluster (H2O)(9)(+) have been comprehensively searched by the particle swarm optimization algorithm combined with quantum chemistry calculations. Geometric optimization and vibration analysis of the interesting isomers were made in the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level. Our results show that cage structure is the most stable at low temperatures. The relative Gibbs free energy below 400 K was calculated, which indicates that the stability of the cage structure decreases as the temperature increases while the energy of ring is relatively slow. We also illustrate the computationally simulated IR spectra obtained at six different calculated levels and individual IR spectroscopy for seven isomers. The obtained molecular orbits of six representative isomers show good agreement with experiment. Finally, through the topological analysis and density gradient analysis, we compared the interaction between the H3O+ core and H2O as well as the OH radicals. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Effects of temperature and some aqueous solutions of electrolytes consisting of ions in natural water on the chemical shifts of NMR of water (17O NMR) have been measured. Combining the cluster model of liquid water structure and the dependence of δ(17OH2) on temperature a relationship deduced of δ(17OH2) to median water cluster size effects of ions on median water cluster and the size are analyzed. The relationships between 17O NMR and concentration of ions are linear. Cations increase the median water cluster size and anions decrease it. The bigger the radius of ions with equal ionic charge, the stronger the effect of the ion. The extent of the ionic charge effect is much bigger than that of the ionic radius. The order of the effect of cations and anions is Na+<K+<Mg2+<Ca2+<Al3+<Fe3+, and OH−<HCO3−<Cl−, and CO32−<SO42−, respectively.

Abstract:Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies involving 17O are increasingly important in molecular biology, material science, and other disciplines. A large number of these studies employ H217O as a source of 17O, and this reliance can be limiting because the high cost of H217O. To overcome this constraint, a recent study proposed a distillation scheme capable of producing significant quantities of H217O at a low cost. Although this method is reported to be effective, the reactions proposed to quantify percent of 17O enrichment are either time intensive or have a risk of errors due to the isotope effect. Here, an alternative reaction scheme is described to measure 17O water that ultimately creates methyl benzoate as the sole 17O-containing product. The proposed reaction is completed in a matter of minutes at room temperature, produces only one 17O product, and requires no clean-up step. The large isotope shift observed in solution NMR between the 13C═16O and 13C═17O resonances allows for integration of the individual peaks. This 13C NMR analysis is found to be highly accurate over a wide enrichment range and is accessible to most NMR spectroscopists.

Abstract:The infrared absorption spectrum in the OH stretching region of (H 2 O) 19 clusters formed in a supersonic molecular beam is reported. It was obtained with mass-spectrometric detection and is compared with a similarly obtained spectrum of (H 2 O) 6 and a large-cluster spectrum obtained with bolometric detection. The mass-resolved spectra show a broad absorption band between ≈ 3200 and 3600 cm −1 , reminiscent of the H-bonding feature in acondensed phase spectrum. The spectrum via the bolometer is peaked to the blue of this region, suggesting that the level of H-bondingis much lower. Mass resolution is clearly advantageous in selectively obtaining spectra of large clusters, free of interferencefrom smaller ones.

Abstract:We report a comprehensive variable-temperature solid-state (17)O NMR study of three (17)O-labeled crystalline sulfonic acids: 2-aminoethane-1-sulfonic acid (taurine, T), 3-aminopropane-1-sulfonic acid (homotaurine, HT), and 4-aminobutane-1-sulfonic acid (ABSA). In the solid state, all three compounds exist as zwitterionic structures, NH(3)(+)-R-SO(3)(-), in which the SO(3)(-) group is involved in various degrees of O···H-N hydrogen bonding. High-quality (17)O NMR spectra have been obtained for all three compounds under both static and magic angle spinning (MAS) conditions at 21.1 T, allowing the complete set of (17)O NMR tensor parameters to be measured. Assignment of the observed (17)O NMR parameters to the correct oxygen sites in the crystal lattice was achieved with the aid of DFT calculations. By modeling the temperature dependence of (17)O NMR powder line shapes, we have not only confirmed that the SO(3)(-) groups in these compounds undergo a 3-fold rotational jump mechanism but also extracted the corresponding jump rates (10(2)-10(5) s(-1)) and the associated activation energies (E(a)) for this process (E(a) = 48 ± 7, 42 ± 3, and 45 ± 1 kJ mol(-1) for T, HT, and ABSA, respectively). This is the first time that SO(3)(-) rotational dynamics have been directly probed by solid-state (17)O NMR. Using the experimental activation energies for SO(3)(-) rotation, we were able to evaluate quantitatively the total hydrogen bond energy that each SO(3)(-) group is involved in within the crystal lattice. The activation energies also correlate with calculated rotational energy barriers. This work provides a clear illustration of the utility of solid-state (17)O NMR in quantifying dynamic processes occurring in organic solids. Similar studies applied to selectively (17)O-labeled biomolecules would appear to be very feasible.

Abstract:The absorption spectrum of oxygen-17-enriched water vapor in the 12,055-12,260 cm(-1) region was recorded with a continuous-wave cavity ring-down spectrometer (CW-CRDS) at room temperature. In total, 1342 lines were observed in this region, while more than 1400 absorption transitions were assigned based on previously published experimental energies and the variational calculations based on the results of Partridge and Schwenke. The typical frequency accuracy of 0.002 cm(-1) was achieved in this work. Three hundred and fifty-eight ro-vibrational energy levels of (H2O)-O-17 water isotopologue were retrieved, which belong to the v(1) + 1/2 v(2) + v(3)=3.5 and 4 polyads: (0 1 3), (0 3 2), (1 1 2), (1 3 1), (2 1 1), (2 2 1), (2 3 0), (3 0 1), and (3 1 0) states. One hundred and ten of them were reported for the first time. Comparisons of experimental line positions with those in the HITRAN database were given for (H2O)-O-16 and (H2O)-O-17 isotopologues. Abstract:Water is the most important solvent in nature. It is a crucial issue to study interactions among water molecules. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is one of the most powerful tools to detect magnetic interactions for the structure analysis of a molecule with broad applications. But conventional NMR spectroscopy requires macroscopic sample quantities with hampers in investigating nanoscale structures. Through quantum control of a single spin quantum sensor, magnetic resonance spectroscopy of nanoscale organic molecules and single molecules has been achieved. However, the measurement of the dipolar interaction of nuclear spins within a molecule at nanoscale and the analysis of its structure remain a big challenge. Here we succeed in detecting the NMR spectrum from an ice crystal with (6-nanometer)$^3$ detection volume. More importantly, the magnetic dipolar coupling between two proton nuclear spins of a water molecule was recorded. The resolved intra-molecule magnetic dipolar interactions are about 15 kHz and 33 kHz with spectral resolution at a few kHz. Analysis of the interaction-resolved NMR spectroscopy provides a spatial view of nanoscale ice crystal, from which the orientation of a water-molecule bond is derived and further the length of the bond can be got. This work enables NMR spectroscopy applications in single molecule structure analysis, provides a further tool for nanocrystalline and confined water research.

Abstract:Infrared spectroscopic study of neutral water clusters is crucial to understanding of the hydrogen-bonding networks in liquid water and ice. Here we report infrared spectra of size-selected neutral water clusters, (H2O) n (n = 3-6), in the OH stretching vibration region, based on threshold photoionization using a tunable vacuum ultraviolet free-electron laser. Distinct OH stretch vibrational fundamentals observed in the 3,500-3,600-cm-1 region of (H2O)5 provide unique spectral signatures for the formation of a noncyclic pentamer, which coexists with the global-minimum cyclic structure previously identified in the gas phase. The main features of infrared spectra of the pentamer and hexamer, (H2O) n (n = 5 and 6), span the entire OH stretching band of liquid water, suggesting that they start to exhibit the richness and diversity of hydrogen-bonding networks in bulk water.

Abstract:Water is one of the most important substances in the world. It is a crucial issue to study the dynamics of water molecules at interfaces or in the confined systems. In recent years, the emerging magnetic resonance technique based on nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center has allowed us to observe the nanoscale nuclear magnetic signal and temperature simultaneously. Here we succeed in measuring the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signals of nanoscale solid and liquid water on diamond surface by NV center, and observing the solid-liquid phase transition of these nano-water by temperature control. This work demonstrates that the nano-NMR technique based on NV centers can probe the dynamics behavior of nanoscale materials effectively, providing a new way for studying the nanoscale confined systems.

Abstract:The distribution of water clusters under ambient conditions was first tested using a triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer coupled with a dielectric barrier discharge ionization source. The water exists as clusters rather than a single molecule under the ambient conditions, and the cluster distribution is dependent on the humility of atmosphere, or the water vapor pressure. In addition to the cluster with the magic number n=21, H+(H2O)(n) was also observed in the ambient condition, and H+(H2O)(4), H+(H2O)(10) and H+(H2O)(15) were found more stable according to the experiment. The dissociation products of H+(H2O)(n) (n=4 similar to 16) clusters were further studied with a collision induced dissociation (CID) method. The product ions were mainly H+(H2O)(n) (n=4 similar to 6). The CID products of H+(H2O)(10) with the collision gas pressure were also studied.
Nucleation of Water Clusters in Gas Phase: A Computational Study Based on Neural Network Potential and Enhanced Sampling

Abstract:Due to their low density in atmosphere, theoretical simulations of the nucleation of gas-phase molecules are computationally very expensive. In this study, neural network potential (NNP) is combined with enhanced sampling techniques to effectively investigate the nucleation of water clusters in gas phase. The neural network potential is trained based on water-cluster energies and forces from density functional theory (DFT). The problem that the binding between water molecules is too weak in the previous empirical force field model has been solved in the NNP. This NNP potential is then applied to Monte Carlo simulations in grand canonical ensemble with enhanced sampling methods such as aggregation-volume-bias Monte Carlo (AVBMC) and transition-matrix Monte Carlo (TMMC) to realize a random walk among different cluster sizes. Probability distribution of water cluster sizes and the corresponding Gibbs free energies can then be obtained. Subsequently, the evaporation rates of water clusters can be calculated via umbrella sampling Monte Carlo simulations in canonical ensemble combined with variational transition state theory (VTST). We observe a big change of free energy and evaporation rate from tetramer to pentamer. A statistical analysis of the number of hydrogen bonds suggests that more hydrogen bonds are required to be broken in the evaporation reaction of tetramer compared to that of trimer and pentamer. Structure analysis indicates that, although the ground state of the pentamer has a two-dimensional ring structure, three-dimensional hydrogen bond network begins to form in pentamer at finite temperature. Therefore, it is a two-dimensional to three-dimensional transition from tetramer to pentamer. The fact that the most probable configuration of pentamer is different from the lowest energy configuration demonstrates the importance of molecular simulations. Simply finding the lowest energy configuration via global geometry optimization and then calculating the free energy within a harmonic approximation of vibrations are not a universal protocol for cluster systems. Methods used in this study are expected to be applicable for more complicated multicomponent systems, which opens an avenue for the research of particulate matter formation in atmosphere.
CRDS Absorption Spectrum of 17O Enriched Water Vapor in the 12,277–12,894 Cm−1 Range

Abstract:The absorption spectrum of water vapor enriched in oxygen-17 has been recorded by a continuous-wave cavity ring-down spectrometer (CW-CRDS) at room temperature in the 12,277-12,894 cm(-1) region. The typical sensitivity of 2 x 10(-18) cm(-1) allowed the detection of water vapor transitions with intensities larger than 1 x 10(-28) cm(-1 )/(molecule cm(-2)). In total, more than 3400 lines were observed in the recorded spectra with a typical frequency accuracy of 0.002 cm(-1). In which more than 3400 transitions were rovibrationally assigned to five water isotopic species ((H2O)-O-17, (H2O)-O-16, (H2O)-O-18, (HDO)-O-16, and (HDO)-O-17) using the known empirical energy levels combined with the calculated variational line lists based on the results of Partridge and Schwenke. About 1300 transitions of (H2O)-O-17 were assigned, leading to the determination of new energy levels of 17 vibration states. Those assigned (H2O)-O-17 transitions are involved with the upper vibration states of (013), (023), (032), (051), (061), (070), (080), (090), (112), (131), (150), (160), (211), (230), (301), (310), and (320). The maximum values of the rotational numbers J and K-a were 16 and 9, respectively. The 5(v1) band of (HDO)-O-17 was assigned for the first time as well. The line positions and energy levels determined in this work were compared with literature, and it shows a significant improvement of the line positions of H(2)(17)Oand (HDO)-O-17 in the 12,277-12,894 cm(-1) region. This work enables NMR spectroscopy applications in single molecule structure analysis, provides a further tool for nanocrystalline and confined water research.

Abstract:In gas phase, collisions that affect the rotational angular momentum lead to the return of the magnetization to its equilibrium (relaxation) in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). To the best of our knowledge, the longitudinal relaxation rates R1 = 1/T1 of protons in H2O and HDO have never been measured in gas phase. We report R1 in gas phase in a field of 18.8 T, i.e., at a proton Larmor frequency ν0 = 800 MHz, at temperatures between 353 and 373 K and pressures between 9 and 101 kPa. By assuming that spin rotation is the dominant relaxation mechanism, we estimated the effective cross-section σJ for the transfer of angular momentum due to H2O-H2O and HDO-D2O collisions. Our results allow one to test theoretical predictions of the intermolecular potential of water in gas phase.
