Abstract:The thermal reactions of the heteronuclear oxide cluster [Ga2 MgO4 ](.+) with methane and water have been studied using state-of-the-art gas-phase experiments in conjunction with quantum-chemical calculations. The significant reactivity differences, favoring activation of the strong OH bond, can be ascribed to a proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) mechanism operative in the activation of water. This study deepens our mechanistic understanding on how inert RH bonds are cleaved by metal oxides.

Abstract:The low-lying isomers of cationic water cluster (HO) have been globally explored by using particle swarm optimization algorithm in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations. Compared with previous results, our searching method covers a wide range of structural isomers of (HO) and therefore turns out to be more effective. With these local minima, geometry optimization and vibrational analysis are performed for the most interesting clusters at second-order Møller-Plesset (MP2)/aug-cc-pVDZ level, and their energies are further refined at MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ and coupled-cluster theory with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations/aug-cc-pVDZ level. The interaction energies using the complete basis set limits at MP2 level are also reported. The relationships between their structure arrangement and their energies are discussed. Based on the results of thermal simulation, structural change from a four-numbered ring to a tree-like structure occurs at T ≈ 45 K, and the relative population of six lowest-free-energy isomers is found to exceed 4% at some point within the studied temperature range. Studies reveal that, among these six isomers, two new-found isomers constitute 10% of isomer population at 180 K, and the experimental spectra can be better explained with inclusions of the two isomers. The molecular orbitals for six representative cationic water clusters are also studied. Through topological and reduced density gradient analysis, we investigated the structural characteristics and the bonding strengths of these water cluster radical cations.

Abstract:The particle swarm optimization method in conjunction with density functional calculations is used to search the lower energy structures for the cationic water clusters (H2O)5(+). Geometry optimization, vibrational analysis, and infrared spectrum calculation are performed for the most interesting clusters at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level. The relationships between their structural arrangements and their energies are discussed. According to their relative Gibbs free energies, their energy order is determined and four lowest energy isomers are found to have a relative population surpassing 1% below 350 K. Studies reveal that, among these four isomers, one new cluster found here also contributes a lot to the experimental infrared spectrum. Based on topological analysis and reduced density gradient analysis, some meaningful points are found by studying the structural characteristics and the bonding strengths of these cationic water clusters: in the first solvation shell, the central H3O(+) motifs may have a stronger interaction with the OH radical than with the water molecules. The interaction in the second solvation shell may also be stronger than that in the first solvation shell, which is opposite to our intuition.

Abstract:The structures of the ionized water cluster (H2O)(7)(+) are investigated through the particle swarm optimization method combined with ab initio method. Some new lower energy structures are found after geometric optimization at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level when compared with previous report. We studied the effect of the zero point vibrational energies on the relative energy order of these isomers, the relationship between their schemes and their relative energies, and the composition of their foremost molecular orbitals. The relative free energies of (H2O)(7)(+) isomers below 350 K, the infrared spectra of five lowest energy isomers, and their electronic characteristics were discussed in detail, respectively. Based on topological analysis and reduced density gradient analysis, we find that the interaction between H3O+ core and water molecules is stronger than the interaction between OH radical and water molecules by comparing the structural and the bonding strengths within these cationic water clusters. Abstract:The ammonia, water monomer and the trans-linear (NH3H2O)-H-... hydrogen-bonded cluster have been studied using ab initio calculations. The geometries of these molecules are optimized at HF, DFT, MP2, CCD and QCISD levels with several basis sets, and the interaction energies are compared to the experimental and high level computational results. The results show that, to ammonia-water cluster, calculations at the MP2/6-31 + G** level bring a reasonable computational consumed cost and can give a reliable result: the errors of NH hydrogen-bond length and bond angle angleNOH are less than 0.4 nm and 1degrees, respectively; the (NH3H2O)-H-... interaction energy differs only 2.1 kJ/mol from CCD and QCISD methods.

Abstract:The OH + H2SO4. NH3, NH2 + H2SO4, and NH2 + H2SO4. H2O reactions have been theoretically investigated using high-accuracy quantum chemical methods and conventional transition state theory. The calculation results reveal that remarkable tunneling effects appear at 200 K in the OH + H2SO4. NH3 reaction, compared with obvious tunneling effects below 100 K in the OH + NH3 reaction. The calculated rate constants predict that the hydrogen atom of the free OH group in M1 (H2SO4. NH3) abstracted via OH can compete well with the H atom in H2SO4 abstracted by OH at 200-240 K. The reaction kinetic results also show that a single water molecule could play an important role in the NH2 + H2SO4. H2O reaction below 240 K. The present results provide new insights into the atmospheric oxidation of sulfuric acid, which could be of great use in understanding atmospheric nucleation processes. Additionally, the findings are tunneling effects enhanced by sulfuric acid, which may be wide applications in reaction kinetics of gas-phase reactions.

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with cluster models are performed at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level for investigating the solvent effects in Al(H2O)(6)(3+) water-exchange reactions. A "One-by-one" method is proposed to obtain the most representative number and arrangement of explicit H2Os in the second hydration sphere. First, all the possible ways to locate one explicit H2O in second sphere (N-m' = 1) based on the gas phase structure (N-m' = 0) are examined, and the optimal pathway (with the lowest energy barrier) for N-m' = 1 is determined. Next, more explicit H2Os are added one by one until the inner-sphere is fully hydrogen bonded. Finally, the optimal pathways with N-m' = 0-7 are obtained. The structural and energetic parameters as well as the lifetimes of the transition states are compared with the results obtained with the "Independent-minimum" method and the "Independent-average" method, and all three methods show that the pathway with N-m' = 6 may be representative. Our results give a new idea for finding the representative pathway for water-exchange reactions in other hydrated metal ion systems.

Abstract:The specific process of hydrogen generation by the reaction of In 7 and In 6 Al clusters with H 2 O molecules is explored through density functional theory in this study. Based on the prediction of the lowest energy structure of In 7 and In 6 Al clusters, the geometric and electronic structures of In 7 @H 2 O and In 6 Al@H 2 O are obtained by using the dispersion-corrected density functional theory B3LYP-D3. The corresponding reaction paths are constructed according to the transition states in the searched reactions. Then we discuss the reaction path, energy barrier and reaction energy release. The results show that both In 7 and In 6 Al clusters can react with H 2 O molecules and release hydrogen. Both reactions are exothermic reactions, and the structure of the reaction product are very similar. The comparison of adsorption energy, energy barrier and reaction release energy show that the Al-doped In 7 cluster can significantly improve its ability to react with H 2 O and reduce the energy barrier that has to be overcome for the reaction process. The generated H 2 exists on the cluster surface in the form of physical adsorption, which is judged by the adsorption energy, the distance between the H 2 molecule and the cluster surface, and the interaction region indicator (IRI).

Abstract:Based on the four models (gas phase (GP),polarizable continuum model (GP-PCM),supermolecule model(GP-SM) and supermolecule-polarizable continuum model (GP-SM-PCM)),we systematically conducted the following investigations using quantum chemical cluster models-density functional theory method.The water-exchange reaction of Al(H2O)63+ was simulated at the level of B3LYP/6-311+-G(d,p),and the single-point energies were calculated using MP2 method.Taking zero-point energies,thermal corrections and entropies into consideration,the activation Gibbs energy barries and water-exchange rate constant(kex) were calculated.The logkex values for water-exchange reactions of Al(H2O)63+ with GP-SM//MP2-PCM and GP-SM-PCM//MP2-PCM models were similar and consistent with available literature values.This indicates that the GP-SM//MP2-PCM model could simulate the water-exchange reaction of Al(H2O)63+ satisfactorily.
Structure, stability, infrared spectra, and bonding of OHm(H2O)7 (m = 0, ±1) clusters: ab initio study combining the particle swarm optimization algorithm

Abstract:The various structural candidates of anionic, neutral, and cationic water clusters OHm(H2O)7 (m = 0, ±1) have been globally predicted by combining the particle swarm optimization method and quantum chemical calculations. Geometry optimization and vibrational analysis for the optimal structures were performed with the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ method, and the energy profile was further refined at the CCSD(T)/CBS level. Special attention was paid to the relationships between configurations and energies, particularly the first solvation shell coordination number of OH- and OH. For OH-(H2O)7, OH(H2O)7, and OH+(H2O)7 clusters, the most stable species at room temperature are predicted to be the tetra-solvated multi-ring structure A6, the tri-solvated hemibond cage structure N1, and the single five-membered ring structure C2, respectively. The temperature effects on the stability of these three systems were also explored via Gibbs free energies. Furthermore, for the OH-(H2O)7 clusters, the assignments of vibrational transitions in the OH stretching region are in good agreement with the studies of small hydroxide ion-water clusters, and the IR spectra of two isomers (tetra-solvated multi-ring A6 and penta-solvated cage A3) may match future experimental observation well. By topological analysis and reduced density gradient analysis, the structural characteristics and bonding strengths of the studied clusters were investigated. This work indicates the excellent performance of the PSO search algorithm and CALYPSO on water clusters, and may further provide extensive insights into the chemical behavior such as the transport mechanism of OH- ions and OH radicals in the aqueous phase.

Abstract:Binding interactions and Raman spectra of water in hydrogen-bonded anionic complexes have been studied by using the hybrid density functional theory method (B3LYP) and ab initio (MP2) method. In order to explore the influence of hydrogen bond interactions and the anionic effect on the Raman intensities of water, model complexes, such as the negatively charged water clusters ((H2O)n-, n = 2 and 3), the water...halide anions (H2O...X-, X = F, Cl, Br, and I), and the water-metal atom anionic complexes (H2O...M-, M = Cu, Ag, and Au), have been employed in the present calculations. These model complexes contained different types of hydrogen bonds, such as O-H...X-, O-H...M-, O-H...O, and O-H...e-. In particular, the last one is a dipole-bound electron involved in the anionic water clusters. Our results showed that there exists a large enhancement in the off-resonance Raman intensities of both the H-O-H bending mode and the hydrogen-bonded O-H stretching mode, and the enhancement factor is more significant for the former than for the latter. The reasons for these spectral properties can be attributed to the strong polarization effect of the proton acceptors (X-, M-, O, and e-) in these hydrogen-bonded complexes. We proposed that the strong Raman signal of the H-O-H bending mode may be used as a fingerprint to address the local microstructures of water molecules in the chemical and biological systems.

Abstract:Ammonia has become an emerging fuel. However, its combustion product NOx is polluting, and it is necessary to explore its conversion process. To determine the effect of water addition on ammonia oxidation and NOx, reaction molecular dynamics simulations are performed to study the chemical reactions of ammonia. Ammonia oxidation is studied in O2/N2 and O2/H2O environments in a determining density and O2/NH3 ratio equal under high temperature conditions. This work focuses on the initial reaction path of ammonia combustion established through chemical trajectory analysis. The ammonia oxidation behavior, the distribution of the main products, and the corresponding time evolution behavior on the atomic scale are also studied. Finally, the interconversion processes of molecules containing N elements in the ammonia oxidation products are analyzed. Results show that when N2 molecules are replaced by H2O molecules, the formation of HNO increases with the net flux of the reactions: NH + OH -> H2NO, H2NO -> H + HNO. We also investigate the effect of different O2 concentrations. An increase of NO and HNO molecules with O2 concentration mainly from the reactions: O2 + H -> O + OH, H3NO + OH -> H2NO + H2O, H2NO -> H +HNO and HNO + OH -> H2O + NO. In addition, the conversion affected by water addition between NO and HNO occurs mainly in the middle time of the oxidation, and H2O enhances the severity of the oxidation with the number of OH radicals. Water addition provides a new way to control NOx emissions in ammonia combustion, that is, converting it into other H-containing compounds.
Effect of hydration on the CH···O hydrogen bond: A theoretical study

Abstract:The effect of introducing water molecules into a CH···O complex on the interaction between the methyl hydrogen atom of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and the oxygen atom of H2O has been investigated using the MP2/6-311++G(d,p) method to explore how the binding strength of the weak hydrogen-bond CH···O interaction changes during hydration. The calculations in gas phase, including the interaction energies, binding distances, stretching frequencies, isotropic shielding constants, natural population analysis (NPA) charges, and stabilization energies, on the DMSO–H2O complex showed that the CH···O interaction is enhanced by introducing water molecules into the system, and the effect of first water molecule is more prominent than that of the second. The results obtained in liquid media support these conclusions. The cooperativity between OH···O and CH···O hydrogen-bonds was also evaluated. The results demonstrate that both such cooperativity and solvation play important roles in enhancing the CH···O hydrogen bond in DMSO–H2O complex. The results are helpful to better understand the role of water molecules in biological processes involving CH···O interactions.
Impact of Nuclear Quantum Effects on the Structural Properties of Protonated Water Clusters

Abstract:Nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) play a crucial role in hydrogen-bonded systems due to quantum tunneling and proton fluctuation. Our understanding of how NQEs affect microstructures mainly focuses on bulk phases of liquids and solids but remains deficient for water clusters, including their hydrogen nuclei, hydrogen-bonded configurations, and temperature dependence. Here, we conducted ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) and path integral MD simulations to investigate the influence of NQEs on the structural properties of protonated water clusters H+(H2O)n (n = 3, 6, 9, 12). The results reveal that the NQEs become less evident as the cluster size increases due to the competition between NQEs and electrostatic interactions. Simulations of several H+(H2O)6 isomers at different temperatures indicate that the effect of elevated temperature on proton transfer is related to the initial structure. Interestingly, the process of proton transfer also involves the interconversion between Zundel-type and Eigen-type isomers. These findings significantly deepen our understanding of ion-water and water-water interactions, opening new avenues for the study of hydrated ion clusters and related systems.
The structure of water-ammonia mixtures from classical and ab initio molecular dynamics

Abstract:The structure of aqueous ammonia solutions is investigated through classical molecular dynamics (MD) and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. We have preliminarily compared three well-known classical force fields for liquid water (SPC, SPC/E, and TIP4P) in order to identify the most accurate one in reproducing AIMD results obtained at the Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA) and meta-GGA levels of theory. Liquid ammonia has been simulated by implementing an optimized force field recently developed by Chettiyankandy et al. [Fluid Phase Equilib. 511, 112507 (2020)]. Analysis of the radial distribution functions for different ammonia concentrations reveals that the three water force fields provide comparable estimates of the mixture structure, with the SPC/E performing slightly better. Although a fairly good agreement between MD and AIMD is observed for conditions close to the equimolarity, at lower ammonia concentrations, important discrepancies arise, with classical force fields underestimating the number and strength of H-bonds between water molecules and between water and ammonia moieties. Here, we prove that these drawbacks are rooted in a poor sampling of the configurational space spanned by the hydrogen atoms lying in the H-bonds of H2O⋯H2O and, more critically, H2O⋯NH3 neighbors due to the lack of polarization and charge transfer terms. This way, non-polarizable classical force fields underestimate the proton affinity of the nitrogen atom of ammonia in aqueous solutions, which plays a key role under realistic dilute ammonia conditions. Our results witness the need for developing more suited polarizable models that are able to take into account these effects properly.
DFT study on X⁻·(H₂O)(n=1-10) (X=OH, NO₂, NO₃, CO₃) anionic water cluster

Abstract:A theoretical study to understand the interaction between anion and the water molecules through the hydration (X(-)·(H2O)n (X=OH, NO2, NO3, CO3), where n=1-10), using the density functional theory method with B3LYP functional and 6-311++G(d,p) basis set has been carried out systematically. In these hydrated clusters we notice three different cases of bond arrangements, namely, symmetrical double hydrogen bond, single hydrogen bond and inter-water hydrogen bond. All the complexes are dominated by the O-H⋯O hydrogen bond, in which the anion act as a proton acceptor, while the water molecule act as a proton donor. A linear correlation is obtained between the solvent stabilization energy and the size (n) of the hydrated cluster for all the anions. The weighted average interaction energy values, shows that the water molecules strongly bind with the OH(-) anion. Besides, the solvation of the OH(-) anion requires less number of water molecules when compared with the other anions. Energy decomposition analysis (EDA) shows the strong dominance of the electrostatic energy component within the interaction energy. The total NPA charges on the anions indicate an increase in the solvation due to hydration. From AIM analysis, excellent linear inverse correlation is observed for both the electron density and Laplacian of the electron density with respect to the hydrogen bond length. Natural bonding orbital analysis (NBO) predicts large charge transfer between the OH(-) anion and the water molecules.
A computational study of H-bonded networks in cyclic water clusters, (H2O)n (n = 3–12)

Abstract:We have performed a detailed MM and DFT investigation of neutral water clusters (H 2 O) n ( n = 3–12). Our results show the trend of interaction energies in these clusters as a function of the size of the cluster. They show that the H-bond strength increases with cluster size and that the model of water is better described if two different partial charges are used on the hydrogen, depending on whether hydrogen is H-bonded or not. The average binding enthalpy change due to the formation of H-bonds between water molecules is found to be − 25.9 kJ mol −1 at B3LYP/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory. We observe the formation of cyclic H-bonded networks through the analysis of frontier orbitals and IR vibrational frequencies spectra. For the water cluster with n = 11, we observe an unusual reduction of the bandgap indicative of a cyclic H-bonded network.

Analysis of the radial distribution functions for different ammonia concentrations reveals that the three water force fields provide comparable estimates of the mixture structure, with the SPC/E performing slightly better. Although a fairly good agreement between MD and AIMD is observed for conditions close to the equimolarity, at lower ammonia concentrations, important discrepancies arise, with classical force fields underestimating the number and strength of H-bonds between water molecules and between water and ammonia moieties. Here, we prove that these drawbacks are rooted in a poor sampling of the configurational space spanned by the hydrogen atoms lying in the H-bonds of H2O⋯H2O and, more critically, H2O⋯NH3 neighbors due to the lack of polarization and charge transfer terms. This way, non-polarizable classical force fields underestimate the proton affinity of the nitrogen atom of ammonia in aqueous solutions, which plays a key role under realistic dilute ammonia conditions. Our results witness the need for developing more suited polarizable models that are able to take into account these effects properly.

Abstract:MP2/6-31g(p,d) calculations were performed on the CH⋯N (or O, F) hydrogen bonding between 18 substituted XCCH and NH3,H2O, and HF. It was found that the Hammett-type correlation was applicable to the above systems, which indicated that the field/inductive and resonance effects could both affect the XCCH⋯NH3 (or H2O, HF) hydrogen bonding.
