Abstract:The coexistence of antibiotics and metal ions in solution could induce their complexion under certain circumstances, which may obviously affect the removal performance of antibiotics. The functional groups of antibiotics, species of metal ions and pH condition in the solution are three main factors influencing their interaction. The complexing behavior of different heavy metals exhibit different effect on the removal of antibiotics. This paper overviews the interactions of antibiotics, metal ions, as well as the influences on removal performance of antibiotics, with an emphasis on the discussion of complexion machanisims. Metal ions could increase adsorption efficiency of antibiotics by acting as cationic bridging, in which complexion capacity of metal ions plays an essential role. The complexion facilitates intramolecular electro transfer, which serves as electron mediator, and improves oxidation effectivness of antibiotics. Metal ions could also enhance the photodegradation of antibiotics by trapping electrons and holes and increasing adsorption capacity. Finally, the prospects of applying metal ions on antibiotics removal in the future research are also presented.
