Abstract:The bacterium producing bio-flocculant with high flocculating activity was screened from soil.The bacterium was identified as Bacillus mucilgnons n.var.The flocculant MBFA9 produced by the bacteria had characteristics of lower dosage,better flocculating effect,etc.When the Kaolin suspension of 5 000 mg/L was treated with MBFA9,the flocculation efficiency was up to 99.6% and the dosage was 0.1 mL/L,which is only about 1/10～1/200 of that of common microbial flocculants.The animal toxicity test showed that MBFA9 had no acute reaction.
Preparation and Application of Microbial Flocculant

Abstract:Activated sludge and silt were taken respectively from Hangzhou Sibao Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Shangtang River located in Zhejiang University of Technology. Two strains of microbial flocculant (marked by L_2 and T_2) were screened out of the sludge and silt which were separated and purified by GCI. The optimization conditions for producing microbial flocculant were studied by taking the flocculation effect on suspended liquid of kaoline as reference. The result shows that at temperature of 30 ℃ and pH of 5-7, the culturing period of L_2 and T_2 of 60 h and 36 h respectively, the best flocculation effect is obtained at zymolytic liquid dosage of 1 mL/100 mL. The experiment was made on the printing and dyeing wastewater treatment by using this flocculant. The result shows that the higher removal rate of SS and color is achieved, and settleability of activated sludge is also improved remarkably.

Abstract:A new kind of composite flocculant, polyaluminum ferric chloride (PAFC), was prepared using blast furnace dust and scrap material of aluminum. Tests about its application on the treatment of brewing wastewater were carried out and the flocculation mechanism was discussed. Results showed that the best condition for foluccation was: doses of PAFC was 40 mg/L, pH of wastewater was about 7.0, sedimentation time was 30 min, removal rate of turbidity, CODcr, decolorization and ammonia were 96.8%、64.7%、87.5% and 41.0% respectively.

Abstract:Coagulation and flocculation processes are widely used in potable water treatment due to its high efficiency in turbidity removal. Egyptians discovered this method in 1500 BC by using alum to settle the suspended solids in the water. Today, the coagulation and flocculation processes are implemented with the purpose of agglomerate colloids and fine particles in water into larger particles, which is also known as floc. Therefore, reduction of turbidity and pollutants e.g. organic matter, inorganic matter, suspended solid, etc. can be achieved. This chapter covers the principle of coagulation and flocculation process which includes the charge neutralization and various binding mechanisms e.g. interparticle bridging, sweeping coagulation, and absorption. Besides, various types of coagulants and flocculants that have been discovered and their respective effectiveness in potable water treatment are discussed as well in this chapter. Polymer modifications to synthesize new coagulant/flocculant i.e. grafting and crosslinking are also included.
Revealing The Characteristics Of A Novel Bioflocculant And Its Flocculation Performance In Microcystis Aeruginosa Removal

Abstract:In the present work, a novel bioflocculant, EPS-1, was prepared and used to flocculate the kaolin suspension and Microcystis aeruginosa. We focused on the characteristics and flocculation performance of EPS-1, especially with regard to its protein components. An important attribute of EPS-1 was its protein content, with 18 protein types identified that occupied a total content of 31.70% in the EPS-1. Moreover, the flocculating activity of these protein components was estimated to be no less than 33.93%. Additionally, polysaccharides that occupied 57.12% of the total EPS-1 content consisted of four monosaccharides: maltose, D-xylose, mannose, and D-fructose. In addition, carbonyl, amino, and hydroxyl groups were identified as the main functional groups. Three main elements, namely C1s, N1s, and O1s, were present in EPS-1 with relative atomic percentages of 62.63%, 24.91%, and 10.5%, respectively. Zeta potential analysis indicated that charge neutralization contributed to kaolin flocculation, but was not involved in M. aeruginosa flocculation. The flocculation conditions of EPS-1 were optimized, and the maximum flocculating efficiencies were 93.34% within 2 min for kaolin suspension and 87.98% within 10 min for M. aeruginosa. These results suggest that EPS-1 could be an alternative to chemical flocculants for treating wastewaters and cyanobacterium-polluted freshwater.

Abstract:The flocculation conditions and performance of the treatment of slurry water by using complexation of F2-F6 compound microbial flocculant and respectively inorganic flocculant AlCl3,inorganic high molecular flocculants PAC,and organic high molecular flocculants PAM were studied and their efficiency values for treating raw water and waster water was also measured.The results showed that complexation of F2-F6 compound microbial flocculant and general chemical flocculant can not only result in the reduction of flocculants usage but also bring about better purification result.

Abstract:The identification of microorganisms with excellent flocculants-producing capability and optimization of the fermentation process are necessary for the wide-scale application of bioflocculants. Therefore, we isolated and identified a highly efficient flocculation performance strain of Stenotrophomonas pavanii GXUN74707 from the sludge. The optimal fermentation and flocculation conditions of strain S. pavanii GXUN74707 was in fermentation medium with glucose and urea as the carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively, at pH 7.0 for 36 h, which treatment of kaolin suspension with 0.5 mL of the fermentation broth resulted in a flocculation rate of 99.0%. The bioflocculant synthesized by strain S. pavanii GXUN74707 was found mainly in the supernatant of the fermentation broth. Chemical analysis revealed that the pure bioflocculant consisted of 79.70% carbohydrates and 14.38% proteins. The monosaccharide components of MBF-GXUN74707 are mainly mannose (5.96 μg/mg), galactose (1.86 μg/mg), and glucose (1.73 μg/mg). Infrared spectrometric analysis showed the presence of carboxyl (COO-), hydroxyl (-OH) groups. The SEM images showed clumps of rod-shaped bacteria with adhesion of extracellular products. Furthermore, the strain decolored dye wastewater containing direct black, direct blue, and Congo red by 89.2%, 95.1%, 94.1%, respectively. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) removal rates after treatment of aquaculture wastewater with the fermentation broth were 68% and 23%, respectively. This study is the first to report the performance and application of strain Stenotrophomonas pavanii in wastewater flocculation. The results indicate that strain S. pavanii is a good candidate for the production novel bioflocculants and demonstrates its potential industrial practicality in biotechnology processes.

Abstract:The bioflocculant MBFTRJ21 for nature soda was exploited in our lab, and its flocculating mechanism was studied. The bioflocculant produced by Lactobacillus, has some advantages, such as less dosage, better flocculating effects, and etc. MBFTRJ21 is mainly composed of polysaccharide, which is determined by Anthrone reaction, Coomassie blue reaction and Elson-Morgan method. The acting force between bioflocculant and nature soda is hydrogen bond, which is determined by xi electric potential, hydrogen bond and electrovalent bond determination. The bioflocculant is treated by heat and KIO4, which indicate the active ingredient of bioflocculant is protein and osamine. Bridge occur during flocculation process, which is determined by particle size distribution. The results showed that the flocculating mechanism of MBFTRJ21 resulted from the combination of nature soda with MBFTRJ21 by hydrogen bond at the active position of glycosaminoglycan.

Abstract:As people's material quality of life continues to improve, water resources become subjected to varying degrees of contamination. As one of the most commonly utilised agents in water treatment, a flocculant exhibits a diverse range of forms and a vast scope of applications. However, the application of flocculants gives rise to a series of issues, including the use of large doses, the formation of sludge, the difficulty of recycling flocculants, and other concerns. The development of new flocculation technology has become a crucial step in enhancing the purification of wastewater and reducing environmental pollution. Magnetic flocculation can be classified into two main categories: magnetic seeds flocculation and magnetic flocculation. This paper presents an overview of the factors influencing magnetic flocculation, including the type of magnetic seeds, magnetic seeds particle size, and other pertinent considerations. Furthermore, the classification of magnetic flocculants in the process of magnetic flocculation is discussed. This includes the types of magnetic flocculant, namely, inorganic composite magnetic flocculants, organic composite magnetic flocculants, and biological composite magnetic flocculants. Inorganic composite magnetic flocculants are inexpensive and simple to produce; however, their dosage is considerable, and the resulting floc is not tightly formed, which impairs the efficacy of flocculation. The use of organic composite magnetic flocculants requires a smaller dosage and exhibits a strong flocculating ability; however, it may possess toxic properties and potentially cause harm to the water body. The biological composite magnetic flocculant exhibits high efficiency and no pollution, yet it is subject to stringent environmental conditions, displays poor stability, and is applicable to a relatively limited range of treatment scenarios. Furthermore, the integration of magnetic flocculation technology with other techniques is classified and summarised in diverse contexts, and the prospective research focus and direction of magnetic flocculants are proposed.

Abstract:The optimization, purification and characterization of bioflocculant produced by Paenibacillus elgii B69 were investigated. The bioflocculant was an exopolysaccharide composed of glucose, glucuronic acid, mannose and xylose. The maximum bioflocculant production was about 25.63 g/L achieved with sucrose at 51.35 g/L, peptone at 6.78 g/L and yeast extract at 0.47 g/L optimized by response-surface methodology. In addition, a series of experiments was performed to investigate the flocculation activities towards kaolin clay, dyeing pigment, heavy metal ion, and real wastewater and the result indicated the new bioflocculant had high activities towards all the tested pollutions. These results showed its great potential for water pretreatment used in industry.
A novel bioflocculant produced by Klebsiella sp. and its application to sludge dewatering

Abstract:A bioflocculant-producing bacterium, named N-10, was isolated from activated sludge and was identified as Klebsiella sp. The bioflocculant (named MBF10) produced by Klebsiella sp. had a good flocculating capability and could achieve a flocculating rate of 86.5% to kaolin suspension at the dosage of 0.034?g/L. Compared with chemical flocculants, such as Al2(SO4)3, polyaluminum chloride (PAC) and cationic polyacrylamide (PAM) at their optimal dosages, MBF10 showed a similar performance for sludge dewatering. After preconditioning, dry solids (DS) and specific resistance to filtration (SRF) of the sludge were 17.5% and 3.36 x 1012 m/kg, respectively. The combined use of MBF10 and Al2(SO4)3 resulted in optimum sludge dewatering properties, SRF reduced from 10.87 x 1012 m/kg to 1.72 x 1012 m/kg, and DS increased from 13.1% to 21.3%. Charge neutralisation and interparticle bridging were proposed as the reasons for the enhanced performance based upon the experimental observations.
Characterization of a novel bioflocculant from a marine bacterium and its application in dye wastewater treatment

Abstract:Background: The identification of microorganisms with excellent flocculant-producing capability and optimization of the fermentation process are necessary for the wide-scale application of bioflocculants. Thus, we evaluated the flocculant-producing ability of a novel strain identified by the screening of marine bacteria, and we report for the first time the properties of the bioflocculant produced by Alteromonas sp. in the treatment of dye wastewater. Results: A bioflocculant-producing bacterium was isolated from seawater and identified as Alteromonas sp. CGMCC 10612. The optimal carbon and nitrogen sources for the strain were 30 g/L glucose and 1.5 g/L wheat flour. In a 2-L fermenter, the flocculating activity and bioflocculant yield reached maximum values of 2575.4 U/mL and 11.18 g/L, respectively. The bioflocculant was separated and showed good heat and pH stability. The purified bioflocculant was a proteoglycan consisting of 69.61% carbohydrate and 21.56% protein (wt/wt). Infrared spectrometry further indicated the presence of hydroxyl, carboxyl and amino groups preferred for flocculation. The bioflocculant was a nanoparticle polymer with an average mass of 394,000 Da. The purified bioflocculant was able to remove Congo Red, Direct Black and Methylene Blue at efficiencies of 98.5%, 97.9% and 72.3% respectively. Conclusions: The results of this study indicated that the marine strain Alteromonas sp. is a good candidate for the production of a novel bioflocculant and suggested its potential industrial utility for biotechnological processes.

Abstract:Abstract Aquaculture effluent generation, an environmentally crucial process requires effective treatment. Simple methods like coagulation and flocculation are considered effective. In this study, chitosan from Black tiger shrimp, Penaeus monodon , was used to remove ammonia (NH 3 ) and turbidity. Response surface methodology-optimised dosages (5.00, 12.50, and 20.00 mg·L −1 ), pH (5.00, 6.25, and 7.50), and settling times (5.00, 7.50, and 30.00 min) were applied. Water spinach, Ipomea aquatica , received an application for organic fertiliser after the nutrient status of the recovered floc was later determined. Results showed that at a dose of 16.25 mg·L −1 , a pH of 7.5, and a settling time of 17.5 min, chitosan cleared 92.16% of the turbidity. After 30 min of settling, 84.42% of the NH 3 was eliminated at 5 mg·L −1 and 7.5 pH. Both macronutrients (P, K, N, Mg, and Ca) and micronutrients (Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Se, and Zn) are present in the newly discovered floc. Floc had safe low Pb and Ni levels. Plants treated with floc showed superior growth compared to those with commercial liquid fertiliser, confirming nutrient absorbability. Conclusively, this study provides an eco-friendly wastewater treatment method.

Abstract:A combination of microbial flocculant (MBF) and ferric trichloride (FeCl3) was applied to aggregate and harvest algae. The orthogonal experiment was designed to optimize conditions of flocculation. Mechanism of flocculation was observed through determining the zeta potential and observing the morphology of algal floc using stereo and scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the optimum combination of flocuulants was 0.175 g of FeCl3 with 10 mL MBF per liter, which exhibited the highest flocculation efficacy (95.12%) and lowest chemical oxygen demand (10.44 mg/L). The flocculation mechanism was charge neutralization, where the MBF first adhered and coated algae. Due to its high affinity to iron-hydroxy ions and long-chain molecules, the MBF attracted positively charged hydroxyl irons generated by FeCl3 hydrolysis and interacted with the iron-hydroxy ions to form a larger floc by bridging. The coat made of MBF formed a thin film which protected algae from being destroyed, and trapped the oxygen released from photosynthesis, making the cell more buoyant to float on the surface of water. Findings of this study provided a potentially practical and efficient method for harvesting unicellular algal cells.

Abstract:<p>Among various aqua remediation technologies, separation aims at cleaning pollutants by isolating them despite their destruction; solutes can also be recovered after the process. Adsorptive micellar flocculation (AMF) has been known as an important surfactant-based technique to separate poorly water-soluble hazardous pollutants from aqua media as an efficient and energy-intensive replacement for other surfactant-based techniques, as such AMF should be known. AMF is based on the partitioning of solutes gradient from bulk solution into the nanosized smart anionic surfactant micelle followed by flocculation. However, unlike coagulation/flocculation or adsorption, AMF is not viable for the production of drinking water in water utilities due to the loss of surfactant monomers. Unfortunately, it can be used as a reservoir or for the recycling/recovery of organic pollutants (intermediates) (ions, organics/bioactive, dyes, etc.), even at high concentrations. The performance of AMF depends on various parameters, and this review briefly summarizes the existing researches on different pollutants removal by AMF and material recovery/recycling. This includes operating condition factors (surfactants, flocculants, surfactant-flocculant or surfactant-pollutant concentration ratio, and water conditions chemistry). Because varieties of micro interfacial phenomena other than physical interactions occur in a versatile micellar environment in the AMF process, emphases are given to adsorptive oxidation, micellar catalysis, selectivity. Furthermore, for the first time, this review gives an overview of understanding the state-of-the-art multifunctional nano amphiphile-based AMF that behaves mimetic to aquatic organisms in the process of pollutant removal. The efficiency of AMF, including recycling concentrated solution without noticeable deterioration, as an auxiliary resource/income for the next cycle, signifies economic viability, versatility, and manifold applications in aqua remediation. Significance, ways to achieve enhanced process efficiency, as well as challenges and future opportunities in wastewater treatment, are also highlighted.</p>

Abstract:Microbial flocculants (MBFs), a class of eco-friendly and biodegradable biopolymers produced by various microorganisms, have gained increasing attention as promising alternatives to conventional chemical flocculants in wastewater treatment and pollutant removal. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the current state of MBF research, encompassing their diverse sources (bacteria, fungi, and algae), major categories (polysaccharides, proteins, and glycoproteins), production processes, and flocculation performance and mechanisms. The wide-ranging applications of MBFs in removing suspended solids, heavy metals, dyes, and other pollutants from industrial and municipal wastewater are critically examined, highlighting their superior efficiency, selectivity, and environmental compatibility compared to traditional flocculants. Nonetheless, bioflocculants face significant challenges including high substrate costs, low production yields, and intricate purification methodologies, factors that impede their industrial scalability. Moreover, the risk of microbial contamination and the attendant health implications associated with the use of microbial flocculants (MBFs) necessitate thorough evaluation. To address the challenges of high production costs and variable product quality, strategies such as waste valorization, strain improvement, process optimization, and biosafety evaluation are discussed. Moreover, the development of multifunctional MBF-based flocculants and their synergistic use with other treatment technologies are identified as emerging trends for enhanced wastewater treatment and resource recovery. Future research directions are outlined, emphasizing the need for in-depth mechanistic studies, advanced characterization techniques, pilot-scale demonstrations to accelerate the industrial adoption of MBF, and moreover, integration with novel wastewater treatment processes, such as partial nitrification and the anammox process. This review is intended to inspire and guide further research and development efforts aimed at unlocking the full potential of MBFs as sustainable, high-performance, and cost-effective bioflocculants for addressing the escalating challenges in wastewater management and environmental conservation.

Abstract:Water is an essential element contributing to human life. Evidence shows that only a portion of the water from sewage/tailings is recovered in the consolidated tailings process. The process produces sediments with a high-water content that require special storage. This is problematic because water trapped in such structures might remain there for a long period. This study investigates flocculants that can potentially help these systems. In this publication, we look at how literature has sought to optimise their formulation to enhance dewatering efficiency and present a clear overview and guidance on the main parameters involved, using both theoretical and practical examples. We have assembled over 200 references (majority published 2020 or earlier) in this review article to demonstrate the complexities of designing a flocculation system employing state-of-the-art synthesised, organic, inorganic, and hybrid flocculants. We next go over a few of examples of how to use microscopical techniques to learn more about the flocculation mechanism. This manuscript can be treated as an illustrative, visual, comprehensive view of application of flocculants to wastewater systems.

Abstract:As there are many advantages of using chemical flocculation process to treat pharmaceutical wastewater, including:high-effect, economical, easy operation and so on, through the combination of it with traditional aerobic / anaerobic biochemical, membrane separation and some other processes, the antibiotic occurance and the persistence fouling of membrance reactor caused by pharmaceutical wastewater could be effectively controlled.Meanwhile, the wastewater biodegradability could be elevated greatly and the wastewater quality characteristic could be improved which made the effluent quality near to or reach the standard for common organic wastewater, thus solved the problems of pharmaceutical wastewater treatment radically.The research status of the application of flocculation in pharmaceutical wastewater treatment and the main factors affecting the said process were discussed.
