Abstract:Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of organic substrates, oxygen, nitrate, and sulfate on the reduction of Cr(Ⅵ) by a biotic zero-valent iron (ZVI) system. The bio-iron system showed significantly higher Cr(Ⅵ) removal efficiency than did the Fe0-H2O and cell systems.Additional organic substrates (i.e.,sodium acetate, ethanol, glucose, and humid acid) improved the removal efficiency of Cr(Ⅵ) in this combined system, increasing it by 33%,19%,16%,and 11%,respectively,after 3 d of reaction time. The air had little effect on Cr(Ⅵ) removal in the bio-iron system. However, nitrate seriously inhibited Cr(Ⅵ)removal, and this inhibitory effect was greater with increasing nitrate concentrations.Owing to the interactive effect between microorganisms and Fe0,iron sulfide was generated on the iron surface under a sulfate-reducing condition. This condition significantly promoted Cr(Ⅵ) removal because of its strong adsorptive and reductive capacity. The Cr(Ⅵ) removal efficiency thereafter increased by 39% after 2 d of reaction time when the initial sulfate concentration was 960 mg · L-1.Hence,the effects of organic substrates and electron acceptors should be taken into account when bio-iron systems are applied to the remediation of Cr(Ⅵ)-contaminated waters.
