Abstract:Resin supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (R-nZVI) was synthesized by the borohydride reduction method. Batch experiments were conducted to evaluate the factors affecting Cr(VI) removal. It was found that nZVI loads, resin dose, pH value and initial concentration of Cr(VI) were all important factors. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the nZVI particles in R-nZVI became sphere after reacting with Cr(VI). This phenomenon was attributed to the co-precipitation of Cr(III) and Fe(III) on the surface of resin. X-ray diffraction pattern confirmed that Fe(0) diminished after the reaction. At optimum conditions, the Cr(VI) removal efficiency was 84.4% when the initial concentration of Cr(VI) was 20.0 mg/L. Regeneration of R-nZVI and resin was possible. R-nZVI can also remove Cr(III) efficiently. However, the removal mechanisms of Cr(VI) (anion) and Cr(III) (cation) are different. The former is chemical reduction, while the latter is ion exchange at pH below 6.3 and precipitation at pH above 6.3. This study demonstrates that R-nZVI has the potential to become an effective agent for treating wastewater containing Cr(VI) and Cr(III).
Removal of Hexavalent Chromium From Wastewater by Cu/Fe Bimetallic Nanoparticles

Abstract:Abstract BackgroundNanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) is a promising material for removing heavy metals from wastewater. However, passivation of nZVI hinders its efficiency in water treatment. Loading another catalytic metal has been found to improve the efficiency significantly. In this study, Cu/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles were prepared by liquid-phase chemical reduction for removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from wastewater. Purpose of this study was to clarify the effects and mechanisms of Cu loading on the removal efficiency of Cr(VI).ResultsThe results showed that Cu loading can significantly enhance the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by 29.3% to 84.0%, and the optimal Cu loading rate was 3% (wt%). The removal efficiency decreased with increasing initial pH and Cr(VI) concentration. It was found that Cr(VI) removal followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. When the Cu loading rate was 3%, the initial concentration of Cr(VI) was 100 mg/L, the observed first-order rate coefficient (kobs) was 0.016 min-1 for Cu/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles at pH of 3.5, which was twice than that of nZVI (0.008 min-1). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that Cr(VI) was completely reduced to Cr(Ⅲ) and precipitated on the particle surface as hydroxylated Cr(OH)3 and CrxFe1-x(OH)3 coprecipitation.ConclusionsIn this study, it was found that the loading of Cu can significantly increase the specific surface area and the Cr(VI) remove efficiency of nZVI, and the removal efficiency decreases with increasing pH and Cr(VI) initial concentration. Therefore, Cu loading can alleviate the passivation of nZVI effectively and can be beneficial for the application of iron-based nanomaterials in remediation of wastewater.

Abstract:In the present study, a highly active reaction system of nanoscale zero-valent (nZVI) was successfully established by enhancing nZVI with a biodegradable complexing agent (CA) and applied to hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] removal. Both iminodisuccinic acid (IDS) and N,N-bis(carboxymethyl)glutamic (GLDA) are good biodegradable CAs with strong ability to Cr(III)/Fe(II)/Fe(III). Cr(VI) (10.0 mg L-1) removal efficiency by nZVI increased from 60.1% to 100.0% with the addition of 4.0 mmol L-1 IDS or GLDA for 60 min. A characterization analysis suggested that nZVI and CA enhanced Cr(VI) removal by decreasing the surface passivation layer, which was expected to be (CrxFe1-x)(OH)3. In addition, the Cr(VI) removal efficiency decreased with increasing initial pH, and appropriate CA dosage (4.0 mmol L-1) and temperature (25.0 degrees C) were beneficial for the efficient reduction of Cr(VI). An amount of 94.8% of Cr(VI) removal was achieved within the initial 2 min when the experiment conditions were as follows: 0.1 g L-1 nZVI, 4.0 mmol L-1 GLDA, the temperature at 25.0 degrees C, an initial pH of 7.0, and stirring at 200 r min-1. And the Cr(VI) removal by GLDA improved nZVI maintained above 84.3% after three consecutive cycles. The results indicate CA-enhanced-nZVI could be a promising approach for the Cr(VI) removal in a solution.
Removal of chromium(VI) from wastewater by nanoscale zero-valent iron particles supported on multiwalled carbon nanotubes

Abstract:For the first time, nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI)-multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposites were adopted to remove Cr(VI) from wastewater. Such composites were prepared through depositing nZVI particles onto MWCNTs by in situ reduction of ferrous sulfate and then characterized by TEM, SEM and XRD. The results showed that nZVI particles could disperse on the surface or into the network of MWCNTs. Compared to bare nZVI or nZVI-activated carbon composites, the nZVI-MWCNT nanocomposites exhibited around 36% higher efficiency on Cr(VI) removal. The mass ratio of nZVI to MWCNTs was optimized at 1:2, at ionic strength of 0.05M NaCl. The reaction followed a pseudo first-order model under different initial Cr(VI) concentrations and pHs. Low pH and initial Cr(VI) concentration could increase both removal efficiency and rate constants. Anions, such as SO(4)(2-), NO(3)(-) and HCO(3)(-), exhibited negative effects on the removal of Cr(VI), while the effects of PO(4)(3-) and SiO(3)(2-) were insignificant. Overall, nZVI-MWCNT nanocomposites offer a promising alternative material for the removal of Cr(VI) ions from wastewater.

Abstract:Heavy metal ions such as Cr(VI) pose great hazards to the environment, which requests materials and methods for decontamination. Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) has emerged as a promising candidate for Cr(VI) removal. Herein, harnessing the merits of marine biomass, a heterogeneous water treatment system for the decontamination of Cr(VI) is developed based on the in situ immobilization of nZVI on the seashell powder (SP)-derived porous support. A response surface methodology (RSM) study involving three independent factors is designed and conducted to direct material synthesis and reaction design for products with optimal performances. Under optimal synthetic conditions, the nZVI-loaded seashell powder (SP@nZVI), which is characterized in detail by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), results in a 79% increase in the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) compared to free nZVI. Mechanism studies show that the removal of Cr(VI) by SP@nZVI conforms to the Langmuir adsorption model with a quasi-second order kinetic equation, in which redox reactions between nZVI and Cr(VI) occurred at the SP surface. The results of this work are expected to benefit the reuse of bioresource waste in developing environmental remediation materials.

Synergy of Carboxymethyl Cellulose Stabilized Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron and Penicillium Oxalicum SL2 to Remediate Cr(VI) Contaminated Site Soil

Abstract:Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) acting as a high-cost disposable material in soil Cr(VI) remediation faces significant challenges due to its easily oxidizable nature and biological toxicity. In addressing this issue, the present study undertook the synthesis of a series of modified nZVI and combined the selected material with Cr(VI)-resistant filamentous fungus Penicillium oxalicum SL2 for real-site chromium pollution remediation. Adsorption experiments demonstrated that the inclusion of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity of nZVI for Cr(VI) by 19.3% (from 73.25 to 87.4 mg/L), surpassing both biochar (37.42 mg/L) and bentonite modified nZVI (48.03 mg/L). Characterization results validated the successful synthesis of the nano composite material. Besides, oxidative stress analysis explained the unique detoxification effects of CMC on SL2, acting as a free radical scavenger and isolating layer. In real-sites soil remediation experiments, a low dosage (0.4% w/w) of nZVI/CMC@SL2 (CMC modified nZVI combined with SL2) exhibited an impressive reduction of over 99.5% in TCLP-Cr(VI) and completely transformed 18% of unstable Cr to stable forms. Notably, nZVI/CMC demonstrated its capability to facilitate SL2 colonization in highly contaminated soil and modulate the microbial community structure, enriching chromium-removing microorganisms. In summary, the synergistic system of nZVI/CMC@SL2 merges as a cost-effective and efficient approach for Cr(VI) reduction, providing meaningful insights for its application in the remediating contaminated site soils.
Nano zero-valent iron loaded corn-straw biochar for efficient removal of hexavalent chromium: remediation performance and interfacial chemical behaviour

Abstract:To improve the poor stability of nano zero-valent iron (nZVI), corn-straw biochar (BC) was used as a support for the synthesis of composites of nZVI-biochar (nZVI/BC) in different mass ratios. After a thorough characterization, the obtained nZVI/BC composite was used to remove hexavalent chromium [Cr( VI )] in an aquatic system under varying conditions including composite amount, Cr( VI ) concentration, and pH. The obtained results show that the treatment efficiency varied in the following order: nZVI–BC (1 : 3) > nZVI–BC (1 : 5) > nZVI alone > BC alone. This order indicates the higher efficiency of composite material and the positive effect of nZVI content in the composite. Similarly, the composite dosage and Cr( VI ) concentration had significant effects on the removal performance and 2 g L −1 and 6 g L −1 were considered to be the optimum dose at a Cr( VI ) concentration of 20 mg L −1 and 100 mg L −1 , respectively. The removal efficiency was maximum (100%) at pH 2 whereas solution pH increased significantly after the reaction (from 2 to 4.13). The removal kinetics of Cr( VI ) was described by a pseudo-second-order model which indicated that the removal process was mainly controlled by the rate of chemical adsorption. The thermodynamics was more in line with the Freundlich model which indicated that the removal was multi-molecular layer adsorption. TEM-EDS, XRD, and XPS were applied to characterize the crystal lattice and structural changes of the material to specify the interfacial chemical behaviour on the agent surface. These techniques demonstrate that the underlying mechanisms of Cr( VI ) removal include adsorption, chemical reduction–oxidation reaction, and co-precipitation on the surface of the nZVI–BC composite. The results indicated that the corn-straw BC as a carrier material highly improved Cr( VI ) removal performance of nZVI and offered better utilization of the corn straw.

Abstract:Sodium citrate (SC) is a widely-used food and industrial additive with the properties of complexation and microbial degradation. In the present study, nano-zero-valent iron reaction system (SC-nZVI@BC) was successfully established by modifying nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) with SC and biochar (BC), and was employed to remove Cr(Ⅵ) from aqueous solutions. The nZVI, SC-nZVI and SC-nZVI@BC were characterized and compared using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analyses (TGA), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that nZVI was successfully loaded on the biochar, and both the agglomeration and surface passivation problems of nanoparticles were well resolved. The dosage of SC, C:Fe, initial pH and Cr(Ⅵ) concentration demonstrated direct effects on the removal efficiency. The maximum Cr(Ⅵ) removal rate and the removal capacity within 60 min were 99.7% and 199.46 mg/g, respectively (C:Fe was 1:1, SC dosage was 1.12 mol.%, temperature was 25°C, pH = 7, and the original concentration of Cr(Ⅵ) was 20 mg/L). The reaction confirmed to follow the pseudo-second-order reaction kinetics, and the order of the reaction rate constant k was as follows: SC-nZVI@BC > nZVI@BC > SC-nZVI > nZVI. In addition, the mechanism of Cr(Ⅵ) removal by SC-nZVI@BC mainly involved adsorption, reduction and co-precipitation, and the reduction of Cr(Ⅵ) to Cr(Ⅲ) by nano Fe0 played a vital role. Findings from the present study demonstrated that the SC-nZVI@BC exhibited excellent removal efficiency toward Cr(Ⅵ) with an improved synergistic characteristic by SC and BC.
Integrated green complexing agent and biochar modified nano zero-valent iron for hexavalent chromium removal: A characterisation and performance study

Abstract:In this study, nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) was loaded on biochar (BC) prepared from recycled waste peanut shells. The loaded BC in the composite was assumed to weaken the agglomeration of nZVI and the environmentally-friendly complexing agents sodium citrate (Cit) and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) were used to establish and for the effective removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous environments. The characterisation results suggested that Cit and CMC not only inhibited the oxidation of nZVI, but also effectively improved its reactivity. The experimental results demonstrated that the Cr(VI) removal efficiency by nZVI was less than 20%, while enhanced the Cr(VI) removal efficiency to 80.73%, because CMC was coated on the nZVI surface for anti-passivation and improved the surface activity of nanoparticles. In addition, the Cr(VI) removal efficiency reached almost 100% with , and the citrate dissociated the passivation layer on the surface of the zero-valent iron particles to ensure the reactivity of the zero-valent iron. The reaction mechanism of includes adsorption, reduction, and co-precipitation, whereas also involves surface complexation reactions. The kinetic studies revealed that the removal of Cr(VI) by and followed the second-order reaction kinetic model, and the reaction rates of and were both higher than that of nZVI. The results indicate that the prepared systems are promising for Cr(VI) remediation in contaminated environments.

Abstract:In this study, ramie biochar (RBC) was used to activate nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) to enhance hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) removal. The best results were obtained at a pyrolysis temperature of 600 °C, a biochar particle size of < 150 μm, and an iron to carbon ratio = 1:1. Under the optimal conditions, the removal of Cr(VI) by RBC600-nZVI (98.69%) was much greater than that of RBC600 (12.42%) and nZVI (58.26%). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that the reaction mechanism at the Fe and Cr interface was a multiple interaction mechanism with reduction dominated, adsorption, and co-precipitation simultaneously. The enhanced performance of RBC600-nZVI resulted from the effective dispersion of nZVI on the surface of RBC600, therefore increasing the adsorption activity sites. At the same time, RBC600 and nZVI exerted a synergistic influence on the composite structure, which jointly promoted the reduction reaction of Cr(VI) and removed more Cr(VI). This study shows that RBC-nZVI is a potentially valuable remediation material that not only provides a new idea for the utilization of ramie waste, but also effectively overcomes the limitations of nZVI, thus, achieving efficient and rapid remediation of Cr(VI).

Abstract:The excellent potential of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) makes it a promising remedy for contaminated aquifers. More efficient remediation modes with nZVI have been investigated recently to overcome the inherent drawbacks of materials. In this study, a double surfactant-modified synthesis method is established to make the removal of Cr(VI) more efficiency. A specific focus of the materials status (suspension or powder) is devoted to explore the best application condition, especially for groundwater remediation. A non-ionic surfactant, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and an anionic surfactant, sodium oleate (NaOA), were selected to modify nZVI simultaneously. The kinetics and isotherm experiments, reactions at different pHs, initial concentrations, gas conditions, and coexisting ion conditions were conducted to analyse the removal mechanism. The characterizations before and after the reaction were used to further explain the results. From the batch experiments, a synergistic effect could be recognized in Cr(VI) elimination when PVP and NaOA were both used for nZVI modification. The materials in suspension (without drying process) exhibited higher removal efficiency in comparison with powder ones. These reactions happened in acidic condition demonstrated higher reactivity. The anaerobic condition facilitated the reaction, which showed prospect application in groundwater. Equilibrium could be reached within 2 min using the suspension sample with a removal efficiency above 99.5% and a maximum removal amount of 231.75mg g(-1). The reaction process was well-fitted with pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir model. Cr(VI) was fully transformed into Cr(III), a safer status. Abstract:Cr (VI) is indispensable in industrial manufacturing, and its extensive use leads to severe heavy-metal pollution in the water environment around people, posing a great danger to physical health and living environment of multitudinous organisms. Expanded graphite (EG) is considered as a typical material for adsorption, while nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) can be applied to degrade and sedimentate various organic or inorganic pollutants. In this study, a simultaneous collaboration of EG and nZVI is carried out, with the investigation on the influence of different test conditions for adsorption performances. These findings demonstrate that nZVI@EG manifests favourable adsorptive performance on the removal of hexavalent chromium efficiently. nZVI, acting as an electron donor, is supposed to reduce Cr (VI) to Cr (III), turning itself into iron oxide or hydroxide. The whole process is an exothermic reaction, accompanying chemical reduction and physical adsorption. And Cr (III) is fastened on the appearance by deposition of chromium hydroxide or ferrochromium complex precipitation, which greatly reduces the total chromium content in the aqueous solution. Herein, as a new composite adsorbent, nZVI@EG shows promising prospects of practical applications in water contamination and environmental remediation.

Abstract:Biochar (BC) obtained by the co-pyrolysis of municipal sewage sludge (MSS) and sunflower seed shells (SSS) was utilized to support nanoscale zero-valent iron particles (nZVI) for the synthesis of a composite material (nZVI-BC) for Cr(VI) removal from aqueous systems. A series of characterization methods confirmed successful immobilization of nZVI on the surface of biochar with no aggregation. Batch experiments showed that the initial pH, initial Cr(VI) concentration, and nZVI-BC dose all significantly affected the Cr(VI) removal using nZVI-BC. The kinetics for Cr(VI) removal via nZVI-BC could be better explained by the pseudo-second-order (PSO) adsorption model. Adsorption isotherms analysis demonstrated the superior Cr(VI) removal capability of nZVI-BC in comparison to bare nZVI and BC. nZVI-BC can be reused after the regeneration process by applying 0.1 M H2SO4 and 0.1 M NaBH4 solutions. The reaction mechanism for Cr(VI) removal might involve its chemical reduction on the nZVI-BC surface. Overall, environmentally friendly nZVI-BC was highly efficient in Cr(VI) removal from aqueous systems.

Abstract:The application potential of nanoscale zero valent iron (nZVI) in wastewater treatment is huge and has attracted a lot of attention. In this study, the composite material BC-nZVI was prepared by emulsion of nZVI and biomass-activated carbon (BC) under the mechanical agitation condition, and was characterized by SEM-EDX, XRD, XPS, and FTIR. The decontamination abilities of BC-nZVI were tested by the removal of total chromium (Cr) from electroplating wastewater. The results showed that the removal efficiencies of Cr in the electroplating wastewater by nZVI particles can be effectively improved when supported with BC, but cannot be improved in its storage capacity. The chemical adsorption process between the Cr and BC-nZVI is the main rate-limiting step in the removal of total Cr from wastewater, and multiple parameters such as dosage, pH, and initial concentration of Cr was found to affect the rate.

New insights into long-lasting Cr(VI) removal from groundwater using in situ biosulfidated zero-valent iron with sulfate-reducing bacteria

Abstract:Sulfidation enhances the reactivity of zero-valent iron (ZVI) for Cr(VI) removal from groundwater. Current sulfidation methods mainly focus on chemical and mechanical sulfidation, and there has been little research on biosulfidation using sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and its performance in Cr(VI) removal. Herein, the ability of the SRB–biosulfidated ZVI (SRB-ZVI) system was evaluated and compared with that of the Na 2 S–sulfidated ZVI system. The SRB-ZVI system forms a thicker and more porous FeS x layer than the Na 2 S–sulfidated ZVI system, resulting in more sufficient sulfidation of ZVI and a 2.5-times higher Cr(VI) removal rate than that of the Na 2 S–sulfidated ZVI system. The biosulfidated-ZVI granules and FeS x suspension are the major components of the SRB-ZVI system. The SRB-ZVI system exhibits a long-lasting (11 cycles) Cr(VI) removal performance owing to the regeneration of FeS x . However, the Na 2 S–sulfidated ZVI system can perform only two Cr(VI) removal cycles. SRB attached to biosulfidated-ZVI can survive in the presence of Cr(VI) because of the protection of the biogenic porous structure, whereas SRB in the suspension is inhibited. After Cr(VI) removal, SRB repopulates in the suspension from biosulfidated-ZVI and produce FeS x , thus providing conditions for subsequent Cr(VI) removal cycles. Overall, the synergistic effect of SRB and ZVI provides a more powerful and environmentally friendly sulfidation method, which has more advantageous for Cr(VI) removal than those of chemical sulfidation. This study provides a visionary in situ remediation strategy for groundwater contamination using ZVI-based technologies.

Abstract:Nano zerovalent iron (nZVI) has been broadly used in the treatment of chromium (Cr) pollution. However, conventional nZVI particles are prone to surface oxidation and particle agglomeration, limiting their effectiveness in contaminant removal. To address these issues, sulfidated nZVI (S-nZVI) was synthesized on the corn stover biochar (BC) surface for rapid removal of Cr(VI) from water. Sedimentation and column transport experiments demonstrated that S-nZVI@BC exhibits excellent dispersion and transport properties, efficiently removing Cr(VI) in the pH range of 2.5–5.0 and showing minimal impact from dissolved oxygen. The Fe 0 , Fe(II), and S 2− components of the material, along with the leached Fe 2+ ions, contributed to the Cr(VI) removal. A portion of the removed Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III) in solution, while another portion was adsorbed on the material's surface through precipitation, with 42.0% of Cr being adsorbed within 30 min. Cycling and water matrix interference experiments further demonstrated the material's excellent reusability and resistance to interference. Notably, the continuous Cr(VI) removal capability in column experiments and the reactivation potential of S-nZVI@BC highlight its promise for practical applications. Future studies are suggested to explore the ecotoxicological effects of the S-nZVI@BC and its capacity for the simultaneous removal of multiple contaminants.

Abstract:This study investigates the removal of Cr(VI) by nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI)-multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) composites from aqueous solutions. Various influential environmental factors including temperature, pH, co-existing ions, and natural organic matters (NOM) on Cr(VI) removal were evaluated. Results revealed that temperature variations significantly influenced Cr(VI) removal and the efficiency decreased to 22% with increasing in temperature from 10 to 40 degrees C. Cr(VI) removal efficiency decreased with increasing pH and the final pH increased to 9.1, 10.1, and 10.2 from 5, 7, and 9, respectively, after 2h of the reaction. Interestingly, most of the co-existing ions except copper presented comparatively lower final removal rates. However, co-existing ions including Pd2+, Ca2+, Zn2+, and Mg2+ facilitated higher Cr(VI) removal. Copper was observed to greatly promote the reaction and 99.5% removal efficiency was achieved within 30min after adding 20mgL(-1) of Cu2+. In contrast, Cr(VI) removal efficiency drastically dropped to 58.9% from 97.9% in the presence of As(V). At higher concentrations of humic and tannic acid; the two representatives of NOM were observed to exhibit a negative impact on Cr(VI) removal. The changes appeared on nZVI-MWCNTs before and after the reaction with Cr(VI) were investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The reusability of nZVI-MWCNTs showed a recovery rate of 53.4% in the third round and demonstrated a better utility of nZVI-MWCNTs composites in wastewater treatment applications.
