Abstract:Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) acting as a high-cost disposable material in soil Cr(VI) remediation faces significant challenges due to its easily oxidizable nature and biological toxicity. In addressing this issue, the present study undertook the synthesis of a series of modified nZVI and combined the selected material with Cr(VI)-resistant filamentous fungus Penicillium oxalicum SL2 for real-site chromium pollution remediation. Adsorption experiments demonstrated that the inclusion of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) significantly enhanced the adsorption capacity of nZVI for Cr(VI) by 19.3% (from 73.25 to 87.4 mg/L), surpassing both biochar (37.42 mg/L) and bentonite modified nZVI (48.03 mg/L). Characterization results validated the successful synthesis of the nano composite material. Besides, oxidative stress analysis explained the unique detoxification effects of CMC on SL2, acting as a free radical scavenger and isolating layer. In real-sites soil remediation experiments, a low dosage (0.4% w/w) of nZVI/CMC@SL2 (CMC modified nZVI combined with SL2) exhibited an impressive reduction of over 99.5% in TCLP-Cr(VI) and completely transformed 18% of unstable Cr to stable forms. Notably, nZVI/CMC demonstrated its capability to facilitate SL2 colonization in highly contaminated soil and modulate the microbial community structure, enriching chromium-removing microorganisms. In summary, the synergistic system of nZVI/CMC@SL2 merges as a cost-effective and efficient approach for Cr(VI) reduction, providing meaningful insights for its application in the remediating contaminated site soils.
Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron Modified by Bentonite with Enhanced Cr(VI) Removal Efficiency, Improved Mobility, and Reduced Toxicity

Abstract:The aggregation of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) particles and their limited transport ability in environmental media hinder their application in environmental remediation. In this study, the Cr(VI) removal efficiency, transport performance, and toxicity of nZVI and bentonite-modified nZVI (B-nZVI) were investigated. Compared with nZVI, B-nZVI improved the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by 10%, and also significantly increased the transport in quartz sand and soil. Increasing the flow rate can enhance the transport of nZVI and B-nZVI in the quartz sand columns. The transport of the two materials in different soils was negatively correlated with the clay composition. Besides, modification of nZVI by bentonite could reduce toxicity to luminous bacteria (Photobacterium phosphereum T3) and ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Compared with Fe-EDTA, the transfer factors of nZVI and B-nZVI were 65.0% and 66.4% lower, respectively. This indicated that although iron nanoparticles accumulated in the roots of ryegrass, they were difficult to be transported to the shoots. The results of this study indicate that B-nZVI has a strong application potential in in situ environmental remediation.</p>
Molybdate modified nano zero-valent iron via green synthesis enhances Cr(VI) reduction during their cotransport in water-saturated porous media

Abstract:The in situ remediation of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) pollution in groundwater and soil using nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) has garnered great attention. However, Cr(VI) remediation, particularly its reduction remains limited in the subsurface due to the poor migration of nZVI materials to contaminated sites. Herein, we successfully prepared a series of Mo/nZVI@GT materials with varying Mo/Fe synthesis molar ratios using green tea extracts and molybdate and efficiently improved the transportability of Mo/nZVI@GT. The pronounced size-selective retention of Mo/nZVI@GT in water-saturated porous media also favors for the effective reaction with Cr(VI) during their cotransport. Moreover, Cr(VI) reduction capacity of Mo/nZVI@GT was remarkably improved at pH 6.0, especially in the presence of phosphate. Mechanistically, X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that tea polyphenols promoted the production of Mo(IV) species in Mo/nZVI@GT, which enhanced the conversion of Cr(VI) to Cr 2 O 3 rather than Cr(OH) 3. Additionally, the increased Mo(IV) and Fe(II) active sites might mitigate phosphate disturbance. This study elucidated the mechanisms of Cr(VI) reduction and removal by green synthesized nZVI@GT with Mo modification during their cotransport and highlighted the potential application of Mo/nZVI@GT composites in efficient in situ remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater and soil.

Reduction and stabilization of Cr(VI) in groundwater by using polysulfide-modified nanoscale zero-valent iron

Abstract:Hexavalent Chromium Cr(VI) is highly toxic in groundwater as a result of natural and anthropogenic sources. As a widely reported material for Cr(VI) remediation, sulfide-modified nZVI (S-nZVI) can enhance the nanoparticle selectivity and reaction rate, but has deficiencies of instability and low removal efficiency. In this study, the optimal S-nZVI used for Cr(VI) removal from groundwater was selected, and the mechanism and influence of environmental factors had been discussed. Among the selected sulfur sources including Na2S, Na2S2O3, Na2S2O4, and CaSx, the CaSx-nZVI had the highest removal efficiency. A 1.5-fold removal rate than traditional S-nZVI was observed for CaSx-nZVI during the treatment of a highly chromium-containing groundwater (200 mg/L), because of its significant inhibition on Fe0 oxidation due to the stable shell-core structure. With the sulfur-iron ratio increased from 1/20 to 1/2, the removal efficiency displayed a trend of first increase followed by a decrease. This was ascribed to the enhanced oxidation resistance with the increased ratio of S/Fe since FeSn (n > 2) were generated inside the materials. However, the excessive sulfidation of nZVI likely led to redundant FeS deposition on its surface to reduce the removal efficiency. The reaction process of Cr(VI) removal by CaSx-nZVI was composed with chemical reduction and physical adsorption. Combined with XPS and SEM-EDS analysis, the reaction mechanism was first the Cr(VI) reduction by CaSx-nZVI via a surface-covered layer of FeSn and then the Cr(III) adsorption. Hence, Sn2− was critical to promote the reduction of Fe3+ and the generation of FeS and FeS2. According to the Gibbs free energy results, the reaction occurred spontaneously with increasing temperature. The initial pH affected the removal efficiency by influencing the phase state of chromium. Cations promoted the reactivity to Cr(VI) in solution, while the influence of the anions was quite different. Our research demonstrated that CaSx-nZVI was a promising technique for the in-situ remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater.

Abstract:The presence of manganese oxide (MnO2) could influence the stability of green-synthesized nano-zero valent iron (nZVI@GT) associated with trivalent chromium (Cr(III)) after its excess application in the in situ remediation of hexachromium (Cr(VI)) contaminated soil. The research findings revealed that the co-transport of the remaining nZVI@GT with Cr(III) was substantially inhibited by high δ-MnO2 concentrations due to the formation of hetero-aggregates between nZVI@GT and δ-MnO2, resulting in an increased irreversible attachment parameter at second-site in a two-site kinetic attachment model. Simultaneously, the Cr(III) complex immobilized on nZVI@GT could be oxidized leading to high levels of Cr(VI) leaching at high δ-MnO2 concentrations. During this process, Mn(IV) was converted to Mn(III)/Mn(II). Subsequently, leachate containing a partial amount of Cr(VI) preferentially adsorbed onto the nZVI@GT surface, enhancing the dispersion of the nZVI@GT and δ-MnO2 agglomerates. Thereafter, nZVI@GT transportability was enhanced with a decreased second-site attachment parameter and the flow content of dissolved Cr(VI) was increased to double, also increasing the potential risk of Cr(VI) being carried by nZVI@GT to underground water systems. This study provides theoretical support for preserving the long-term stability of nZVI@GT after the in situ remediation of heavy metal-contaminated sites in the presence of δ-MnO2.

Abstract:In this study, nano-zero-valent iron/copper was synthesized by green tea extracts (GT-nZVI/Cu) and produced a stable suspension than nano-zero-valent iron synthesized by green tea extracts (GT-nZVI) injected into Cr(VI)-containing soil column. The equilibrium 1D-CDE model was successfully used to fit the penetration curves of Fe(tot), Fe(aq), and Fe(0) in order to determine the relevant parameters. The hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient of chromium-contaminated soil was 0.401 cm 2 ·h −1 , and the pore flow rate was 0.144 cm·h −1 . The stable C / C 0 of Fe(tot), Fe(aq), and Fe(0) in the effluent were retarded to 0.39, 0.79, and 0.11, respectively, compared to a ratio of 1 for the concentration of the tracer Cl − in the effluent to the concentration in the influent. Additionally, the 1D-CDE model describes the migration behavior of Cr(VI) with a high R 2 (> 0.97). The obtained blocking coefficients declined gradually with increasing concentration of GT-nZVI/Cu suspension and decreasing concentration of Cr(VI). The content of reduced chromium in the soil decreased from 2.986 to 1.121 after remediation, while the content of more stable oxidizable chromium and residual chromium increased from 2.975 and 20.021 to 16.471 and 27.612. The phytotoxicity test showed that mung bean seeds still had a germination rate of 90% (control of 100%), root length of 29.63 mm (control of 35.25 mm), and stem length of 17.9 cm (control of 18.96 cm) after remediation with GT-nZVI/Cu. These indicated that GT-nZVI/Cu was effective in immobilizing Cr(VI) in the soil column and reduced the ecological threat. This study provides an analytical basis and theoretical model for the migration of chromium-contaminated soil in practical application.

Abstract:The excellent potential of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) makes it a promising remedy for contaminated aquifers. More efficient remediation modes with nZVI have been investigated recently to overcome the inherent drawbacks of materials. In this study, a double surfactant-modified synthesis method is established to make the removal of Cr(VI) more efficiency. A specific focus of the materials status (suspension or powder) is devoted to explore the best application condition, especially for groundwater remediation. A non-ionic surfactant, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and an anionic surfactant, sodium oleate (NaOA), were selected to modify nZVI simultaneously. The kinetics and isotherm experiments, reactions at different pHs, initial concentrations, gas conditions, and coexisting ion conditions were conducted to analyse the removal mechanism. The characterizations before and after the reaction were used to further explain the results. From the batch experiments, a synergistic effect could be recognized in Cr(VI) elimination when PVP and NaOA were both used for nZVI modification. The materials in suspension (without drying process) exhibited higher removal efficiency in comparison with powder ones. These reactions happened in acidic condition demonstrated higher reactivity. The anaerobic condition facilitated the reaction, which showed prospect application in groundwater. Equilibrium could be reached within 2 min using the suspension sample with a removal efficiency above 99.5% and a maximum removal amount of 231.75mg g(-1). The reaction process was well-fitted with pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir model. Cr(VI) was fully transformed into Cr(III), a safer status. Abstract:This study focuses on a flushing-electrokinetic remediation technology of hexavalent chromium from the chromium slag dump site. A suspension of nanoscale zero-valent iron/nickel fabricated from green tea (GT-nZVI/Ni), was employed as an eluent to degrade Cr (VI) and enhance the remediation effectiveness of a single EK. The removal efficiency of Cr (VI) was compared under different voltages, electrode spacings and pH values of the anolyte. The results demonstrated that the combined flushing and EK achieved a removal rate of Cr (VI) in the soil throughout all the experiments ranging from 83.08 to 96.97% after 120 h. The optimal result was obtained when the voltage was 28 V, the pH value of anolyte was 3 and the electrode spacing was 15 cm. The removal of Cr (VI) reached 91.49% and the energy consumption was 0.32606 kW·h·g −1 . The underlying mechanisms responsible for the removal of Cr (VI) by GT-nZVI/Ni flushing-EK primarily involved electromigration, reduction and adsorption co-precipitation processes. The fractionation analysis of Cr (VI) concentration in the soil after remediation showed that the presence of GT-nZVI/Ni facilitated the conversion of Cr (VI) into oxidizable and residual states with low mobility and toxicity. The results of toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) indicated that the leaching concentration of Cr (VI) was below 1 mg·L −1 , complying with the standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency. Additionally, the phytotoxicity testing revealed that the germination index (GI) of the remediated soil reached 54.75%, indicating no potential harm to plants.

Abstract:Sulfidated nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) is a vital technology for stabilizing hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in groundwater. However, it faces challenges such as oxidation susceptibility and unclear reaction mechanisms. In this study, a novel CaSx-modified nZVI material (PS-nZVI) was synthesized through an improved preparation method by using a two-step method to investigate its interactions with chromium, sulfur and iron for Cr(VI) immobilization. Results showed that the addition of PS significantly altered the microstructure and properties of the material. As the PS content increased, the material transformed from nZVI to a flower-like FeSn structure, enhancing its reduction capability and protecting the internal nZVI. PS-nZVI exhibited higher Cr(VI) removal capacity compared to nZVI, with the best efficiency at a PS/Fe molar ratio of 1/10. The removal process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating that chemical adsorption dominated. Initially, PS-nZVI focused on reducing Cr(VI), differentiating it from other sulfide-modified nZVI. The formation of FeSn on the surface of material facilitated the reduction of Fe(III) and Cr(VI) and acted as an electron transfer intermediate, enabling efficient Cr(VI) stabilization. Using a reactive transport model, it can be found that iron contributed 57.4% to Cr(VI) solidification as chromite, while sulfur and iron contributed 95.9% and 4.1%, respectively, to Cr(VI) reduction to Cr(III).

Removal of Hexavalent Chromium From Wastewater by Cu/Fe Bimetallic Nanoparticles

Abstract:Abstract BackgroundNanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) is a promising material for removing heavy metals from wastewater. However, passivation of nZVI hinders its efficiency in water treatment. Loading another catalytic metal has been found to improve the efficiency significantly. In this study, Cu/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles were prepared by liquid-phase chemical reduction for removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from wastewater. Purpose of this study was to clarify the effects and mechanisms of Cu loading on the removal efficiency of Cr(VI).ResultsThe results showed that Cu loading can significantly enhance the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by 29.3% to 84.0%, and the optimal Cu loading rate was 3% (wt%). The removal efficiency decreased with increasing initial pH and Cr(VI) concentration. It was found that Cr(VI) removal followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. When the Cu loading rate was 3%, the initial concentration of Cr(VI) was 100 mg/L, the observed first-order rate coefficient (kobs) was 0.016 min-1 for Cu/Fe bimetallic nanoparticles at pH of 3.5, which was twice than that of nZVI (0.008 min-1). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that Cr(VI) was completely reduced to Cr(Ⅲ) and precipitated on the particle surface as hydroxylated Cr(OH)3 and CrxFe1-x(OH)3 coprecipitation.ConclusionsIn this study, it was found that the loading of Cu can significantly increase the specific surface area and the Cr(VI) remove efficiency of nZVI, and the removal efficiency decreases with increasing pH and Cr(VI) initial concentration. Therefore, Cu loading can alleviate the passivation of nZVI effectively and can be beneficial for the application of iron-based nanomaterials in remediation of wastewater.
Penicillium Oxalicum Sl2-Enhanced Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron Effectively Reduces Cr(Vi) and Shifts Soil Microbiota

Abstract:Most current researches focus solely on reducing soil chromium availability. It is difficult to reduce soil Cr(VI) concentration below 5.0 mg kg -1 using single remediation technology. This study introduced a sustainable soil Cr (VI) reduction and stabilization system, Penicillium oxalicum SL2 -nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI), and investigated its effect on Cr(VI) reduction efficiency and microbial ecology. Results showed that P. oxalicum SL2 -nZVI effectively reduced soil total Cr(VI) concentration from 187.1 to 3.4 mg kg -1 within 180 d, and remained relatively stable at 360 d. The growth curve of P. oxalicum SL2 and microbial community results indicated that gamma-ray irradiation shortened the adaptation time of P. oxalicum SL2 and facilitated its colonization in soil. P. oxalicum SL2 colonization activated nZVI and its derivatives, and increased soil iron bioavailability. After restoration, the negative effect of Cr(VI) on soil microorganisms was markedly alleviated. Cr(VI), Fe(II), bioavailable Cr/Fe, Eh, EC and urease (SUE) were the key environmental factors of soil microbiota. Notably, Penicillium significantly stimulated the growth of urease-positive bacteria, Arthrobacter , Pseudarthrobacter , and Microvirga , synergistically reducing soil chromium availability. The combination of P. oxalicum SL2 and nZVI is expected to form a green, economical and long-lasting Cr(VI) reduction stabilization strategy.
Facile Improvement of Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron Activity with Exceptional Stability for Reduction of Cr(VI)

Abstract:In the present study, a highly active reaction system of nanoscale zero-valent (nZVI) was successfully established by enhancing nZVI with a biodegradable complexing agent (CA) and applied to hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] removal. Both iminodisuccinic acid (IDS) and N,N-bis(carboxymethyl)glutamic (GLDA) are good biodegradable CAs with strong ability to Cr(III)/Fe(II)/Fe(III). Cr(VI) (10.0 mg L-1) removal efficiency by nZVI increased from 60.1% to 100.0% with the addition of 4.0 mmol L-1 IDS or GLDA for 60 min. A characterization analysis suggested that nZVI and CA enhanced Cr(VI) removal by decreasing the surface passivation layer, which was expected to be (CrxFe1-x)(OH)3. In addition, the Cr(VI) removal efficiency decreased with increasing initial pH, and appropriate CA dosage (4.0 mmol L-1) and temperature (25.0 degrees C) were beneficial for the efficient reduction of Cr(VI). An amount of 94.8% of Cr(VI) removal was achieved within the initial 2 min when the experiment conditions were as follows: 0.1 g L-1 nZVI, 4.0 mmol L-1 GLDA, the temperature at 25.0 degrees C, an initial pH of 7.0, and stirring at 200 r min-1. And the Cr(VI) removal by GLDA improved nZVI maintained above 84.3% after three consecutive cycles. The results indicate CA-enhanced-nZVI could be a promising approach for the Cr(VI) removal in a solution.
Stabilization of sulfidated nano zerovalent iron with biochar: Enhanced transport and application for hexavalent chromium removal from water

Abstract:Nano zerovalent iron (nZVI) has been broadly used in the treatment of chromium (Cr) pollution. However, conventional nZVI particles are prone to surface oxidation and particle agglomeration, limiting their effectiveness in contaminant removal. To address these issues, sulfidated nZVI (S-nZVI) was synthesized on the corn stover biochar (BC) surface for rapid removal of Cr(VI) from water. Sedimentation and column transport experiments demonstrated that S-nZVI@BC exhibits excellent dispersion and transport properties, efficiently removing Cr(VI) in the pH range of 2.5–5.0 and showing minimal impact from dissolved oxygen. The Fe 0 , Fe(II), and S 2− components of the material, along with the leached Fe 2+ ions, contributed to the Cr(VI) removal. A portion of the removed Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III) in solution, while another portion was adsorbed on the material's surface through precipitation, with 42.0% of Cr being adsorbed within 30 min. Cycling and water matrix interference experiments further demonstrated the material's excellent reusability and resistance to interference. Notably, the continuous Cr(VI) removal capability in column experiments and the reactivation potential of S-nZVI@BC highlight its promise for practical applications. Future studies are suggested to explore the ecotoxicological effects of the S-nZVI@BC and its capacity for the simultaneous removal of multiple contaminants.

Abstract:Cr (VI) is indispensable in industrial manufacturing, and its extensive use leads to severe heavy-metal pollution in the water environment around people, posing a great danger to physical health and living environment of multitudinous organisms. Expanded graphite (EG) is considered as a typical material for adsorption, while nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) can be applied to degrade and sedimentate various organic or inorganic pollutants. In this study, a simultaneous collaboration of EG and nZVI is carried out, with the investigation on the influence of different test conditions for adsorption performances. These findings demonstrate that nZVI@EG manifests favourable adsorptive performance on the removal of hexavalent chromium efficiently. nZVI, acting as an electron donor, is supposed to reduce Cr (VI) to Cr (III), turning itself into iron oxide or hydroxide. The whole process is an exothermic reaction, accompanying chemical reduction and physical adsorption. And Cr (III) is fastened on the appearance by deposition of chromium hydroxide or ferrochromium complex precipitation, which greatly reduces the total chromium content in the aqueous solution. Herein, as a new composite adsorbent, nZVI@EG shows promising prospects of practical applications in water contamination and environmental remediation.

Removal of Cr(Vi) from Simulative Contaminated Groundwater by Iron Metal

Abstract:The Cr(VI) removal from simulative contaminated groundwater using zero-valent iron (Fe0) filings, Fe0 powder and nanoscale Fe0 in batch experimental mode was studied. Cr(VI) is a primary pollutant of some soils and groundwater. Zero-valent iron, an important natural reductant, could transform Cr(VI) to Cr(III) which is much less toxic and immobile. The Cr(VI) removal percentage was 87% at a metal to solution ratio of 6gl−1 for commercial iron powder (200mesh) in 120min, and 100% Cr(VI) was removed when the metal to solution ratio was 10gl−1. The results demonstrates that the Cr(VI) removal percentage was affected apparently by pH, the amount of Fe powder and the reaction temperature. The Cr(VI) removal percentage with nanoscale Fe0 was much higher than those with Fe0 filings or Fe0 powder at the same reaction time. Electrochemical analysis of the reaction process led to the conclusion that the Cr(VI) trended to form Cr(III) hydroxide under the reaction conditions. The kinetics analysis showed that Cr(VI) reduction by Fe0 could be described as a pseudo-first-order kinetics model.

Abstract:The extensive application of chromium (Cr) in many industries has inevitably resulted in the release of Cr(VI) into the groundwater environment, thus posing damage to the ecosystem and human health. Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) has been widely studied and applied in the remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated water as an ideal material with high reductive capacity, which enables the transformation of teratogenic and carcinogenic Cr(VI) into less toxic Cr(III). This review comprehensively summarizes the preparation and modification methods of nZVI Cr(VI) removal performance and mechanisms by nZVI and modified nZVI materials. The field applications of nZVI-based materials, such as combining the injection well and the permeable reactive barrier (PRB) to remove Cr(VI) in groundwater, have been reported. Subsequently, the potential toxicity of nZVI-based materials to organisms during environmental application has been highlighted in the current study. Finally, the review outlines potential improvements and explores future directions for the use of nZVI-based materials in groundwater contamination remediation.

Dual-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron for As(III) contaminated groundwater remediation

Abstract:Nanoscale zero-valent irons (nZVIs) are easy to agglomerate and deactivate, which limited the practical applications in the subsurface for in situ remediation of contaminated groundwater due to poor radius of influence. Here, we utilized the dual support effect of coupling surface-modified carbon black with a surfactant (carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) or sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)) to manipulate the charge, electron, and geometric structure of the interface, the obtained Fe/CB/CMC (wt%=1:1:2) and Fe/CB/SDS (wt%=1:2:1) suspensions exhibited superior removal capacity toward As(III) with capacities of 80.7 and 90.7 mg g -1 , respectively. In a clay medium, 25.2% and 18.0% of nZVIs in Fe/CB/CMC-1:1:2 and Fe/CB/SDS-1:2:1 can break through the column while approximately 100% are retained in bare nZVIs under the same conditions. In addition, input velocity and ionic strength demonstrate a positive correlation with the retention of nZVIs in the Fe/CB/CMC-112 and a slight impact on the deposition of nZVIs in the Fe/CB/SDS-121 due to the rheology and charge differences between CMC and SDS. This study demonstrates the feasibility of combining anionic surfactants and carbon supports to enhance the reactivity and mobility of nZVIs for in situ remediation.

Abstract:Nano-scale zero-valent iron (nZVI) is among the most common nanoparticles widely used for the treatment of various environmental contaminants. However, little is known about the combined effects of nano-zero-valent iron (nZVI) and other soil amendments on soil remediation and plant performance. For the first time, we studied the remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated soil using bare nZVI (B-nZVI) and starch-supported nZVI (S-nZVI) in combination with either biochar (BC) or humic acid (HA), and the consequent effects on plant growth and Cr accumulation. Both S-nZVI and B-nZVI decreased the contents of Cr(VI) and available Cr in soil, but increased available Fe content, with S-nZVI generally showing more pronounced effects at a higher dose (1000 mg/kg). B-nZVI exerted no inhibition and even stimulation on plant growth, but 1000 mg/kg S-nZVI produced significant phytotoxicity, resulting in decreased plant growth, low chlorophyll content in leaves, and excessive accumulation of Fe in roots. Each nZVI decreased shoot and root Cr concentrations. BC and HA produced synergistic effects with nZVI on Cr(VI) removal from soil, but HA decreased soil pH and increased the availability of Cr and Fe, implying a potential environmental risk. Addition of BC or HA did not alter the effects of either nZVI on plant growth. In conclusion, combined application of 100 mg/kg nZVI and BC could be an ideal strategy for the remediation of soil contaminated with Cr(VI), whereas high-dose S-nZVI and HA are not recommended in the remediation of agricultural soils for crop production or in the phytostabilization of Cr(VI).
