Abstract:One of the impediments to the wide application of electrical discharge machining (EDM) is the complexity of the process planning. To solve the complex problem of EDM technique puzzling the operators, in this paper, an intelligent CAPP system is implemented. A formalized representation for the complicated techniques knowledge of EDM is constructed, based on which Rules-based Simply Petri Net(SPN) is set up for intelligent selection of machining method and Genetic Algorithm is used to achieve a global optimization.

Abstract:s: An overall structured model for CAPP system of EDM is configured based on analysis on technology for EDM. The model uses automatic electrode_separating and _restructuring method to process complex cavities with simple electrodes, hence reducing the processing cost; it makes decision on process by using the intelligent decision system for process instructions based on simple Petri network model; it realizes intelligent selection for electric criteria with hybrid intelligence, and optimizes the process by setting up multi_tasks planning model with priority level_weight coefficient methodology.

Abstract:The new generation of CAPP system for networked manufacturing named NET-CAPP is under development. It is built on CORBA architecture. The difference of NET-CAPP and traditional CAPP along with some key techniques, such as capability assessment, candidate partner evaluation and XML-based process exchange are described in detail. Abstract:Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is widely used in mold manufacturing to form the intricate geometric features which are difficult to be produced by the conventional machining process. Owing to the use of a large number of electrodes, the cost and time consumption for electrode design and NC programming has become a bottleneck in boosting productivity of mold enterprises. Although computer-aided design (CAD)/computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) systems are widely used, because of the complex shapes and diversity of electrodes, manual operations are commonly employed to generate process plans and tool paths for electrode manufacturing, which is cumbersome and error-prone. In order to realize the intelligent manufacturing of electrodes in such a knowledge-intensive domain, this paper presents a feature-based integration approach of CAD/computer-aided process planning (CAPP)/CAM. A hierarchical taxonomy of electrode features is introduced and a hybrid feature recognition method is proposed to build multi-level feature tree. Then, feature knowledge and domain know-how based process planning and optimization are achieved followed by automatic tool path generation which aim to machining the electrode precisely and economically. In the framework of system integration, a structured product model is established to capture and encapsulate geometric entities, machining features, technical information, process plans, and measurement data of machining error to realize seamless flow of information among CAD/CAPP/CAM systems. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach are demonstrated by case studies and industry implementation.

Abstract:This paper addresses the application of STEP techniques in CIM environment and explores the principles of establishing STEP feature model, realizing feature-based modeling in CAD/CAPP, implementing STEP toolkit and carrying out model mapping. Based on these approaches, a kind of “Plug and Play” technique for feature mapping and information integration is discussed. Finally, a system independent method to feature-based CAD/CAPP integration is presented.

Abstract:In the basis of the existing computer aided process planning (CAPP) developing tool, the concept of CAPP developing tool was described. Abstract:Networked manufacturing oriented cooperative CAPP system has become one of the hotspots of research and application. The paper mainly studies how to realize cooperative planning among heterogeneous CAPP systems in a networked manufacturing oriented environment. We put forward an idea for cooperative process planning. Then, we study some key technologies of it, including cooperative control command management technology and shared data processing. Abstract:As electrode wear in micro-EDM significantly deteriorates the machining accuracy,it must be compensated in process to improve the geometric accuracy of the product.In this study,a compensation method for a Micro-EDM process using discharge pulse counting is proposed.The method is based on the proportional relationship between the electrode wear and the number of discharge pulses. The PCB(Printed Circuit Board) based on CPLD(Complex Programmable Logic Device)was designed and programmed to validate the method.The experiment result confirms this method can compensate the electrode wear effectively.

Abstract:Aiming at disadvantages of the computer aided process planning (CAPP) system based on the expert system theory, this paper has made theoretical analysis and research on an artificial neural network (ANN) model,combinatorial optimization and fuzzy inference method in process planning. The ANN model of machining method selection and the simulated annealing optimization model of sequencing operation steps have been developed respectively. A fuzzy comprehensive judgment method is used to determine locating-clamping schemes. Based on the above theoretical models, an intelligent CAPP prototype system for nonrotational parts has been developed in the environment of CIMS-ERC (computer integrated manufacturing systems-engineering research center).

Abstract:In 3D scanning micro electro discharge machining (EDM), the CAD/CAM systems being used in mechanical milling of numerical control (NC) are unable to be applied directly due to the particularity of tool electrode wear. Based on industry computer and RT-Linux software platform, a CAD/CAM integration system of 3D micro EDM is developed. In the developed CAD/CAM integration system, the hardware includes mainly a micro feed mechanism for servo control, XY worktable, a high frequency pulse power supply, monitoring circuits etc., and the functions consist of model design, scanning path planning and simulation, NC code generation and post processing, real-time compensating of tool electrode wear, and machining control of states and process. The method of double buffer storage is adopted to transmit numbers of NC machining data. Servo scanning EDM method is used to realize real-time electrode wear compensating and thereby 3D micro structures are machined automatically. The machining experiments are made about model design, parameters optimizing, and process control. The typical 3D micro structures with space curved surfaces and lines have been machined such as micro prism, micro half tube, camber correlation line, and so on. The machining process and results show that the CAD/CAM integration system has the characters of higher real-time, reliability, and general using.
STUDY ON CAD/CAPP INTEGRATED SYSTEM FOR WIRE HARNESS

Abstract:To improve the efficiency of process planning, an automotive wire harness integrated system based on CAD/CAPP platform was proposed. Firstly, each module of its functional model was described in detail. Secondly, the key technologies of system development were studied, which includes graphic database design, the method of inputting product data and the principle of process planning. Based on the AutoCAD platform and used ObjectARX software, a CAD / CAPP integrated system with C / S framework was developed. The WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) technology was adopted to input product information, when the automobile wire harness layout was draw, both the design information of products and the hand1es of their corresponding drawing were stored in database. According to the technical parameters, the product data were translated into process steps and instructions, and the manufacture BOM can be automatically generated. Finally, an application instance was elaborated and the results demonstrated that the methods proposed were reasonable and valid.

Computer Integrated Manufacturing Systems

Abstract:The CAPP developing tool is a necessary method to realize commercial CAPP and CAD/CAPP/CAM integrated system. The CAPP developing tool proposed in this paper is composed of Constructive Tool System and User Frame System. Customers use the User Frame System to create process plan based on Constructive Tool System. It has the following functions: reading user system information template, reading and checking part information, creating process plan, outputting process documents and machining information. The key technologies of User Frame System are discussed in detail: manufacture feature class definition for all system features and user defined features, process sequence and optimization based on flexible process decision-making, process information operation based on part process structural tree. The CAPP developing tool has been used to realize two CAPP systems for non-rotational parts.

Abstract:With the development of mechanical production technology,CAPP(Computer Aided Process Planning) instead of the traditional process design method has important significance.However,the design of CAPP system is difficult because of the structural complexity of the various parts.This paper puts forward the combination unit library to solve the description of the part information in CAPP system.The paper mainly studies the computer aided process planning on the base of combination unit library.It discusses deeply three aspects;building the technology database,importing the parts information and exporting the process.The system builds the technology database and develops the technology decision-making under the VFP6.0 that inducts user to generate the process taking advantage of menu on the base of rotational parts.So,through the establishment of the combination unit library for different parts categories,the parts enter system in the CAPP system can be simplified and adapt to the tasks of the CAPP system better.

Abstract:Although current CAD systems are declared to be feature-based, in fact, the so-called feature is just a modeling macro or menu name such as Protrusion, Revolution, Cutout, Block, etc., instead of a design feature or manufacturing feature in accordance with engineering practice. Consequently, product model data insufficiency and incompatibility between varieties of application systems are still the major barriers to system integration, especially the integration of design and process planning. This paper proposes a practical solution for a bi-directional integration of CAD and CAPP on the platform of commercial CAD systems. The key techniques such as feature recognition and conversion, feature parameter and constraint extraction, feature tree reconstruction, technical information processing, process planning, automatic process drawing marking and 3D material stock CAD model generating are discussed. And the extracted features and their related technical information and knowledge are encapsulated together with the geometry-oriented CAD model to form an integrated product information model to facilitate effective integration with the downstream activities. The integrated CAD/CAPP system is implemented on a commercial CAD package, UGS/SolidEdge. A case study and industry implementation illustrate the feasibility of the approach proposed.
